Getting Method objects without reflection

This is a shameless plug to try to get votes for a recent bug I've filed:
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6356762
For a long time, it's bothered me that there is no way other than reflection to obtain Method and Field objects to identify components of classes. It should be possible to write something like MyClass.class.nameOfMyField to obtain the FIeld object directly. With the current reflection-only method, one has to obtain these by looking up their String names. So:
-there's no way for the compiler to detect syntax errors at compile time
-no real way to obfuscate this code
-debugging is more difficult because you are working indirectly through strings
-it's inelegant to use Strings to perform at runtime what the compiler should be able to do at compile time
One of the most immediate uses for this could be with classes conforming to the Beans pattern. Instead of specifying String names directly when firing property change events (whilch always risks a typo cauing a hard to trace error), you could obtain the coresponding Field object and call getName() on it.
If something like this could be provided in Mustang, I would be in seventh heaven. Please vote for the bug, or let me know what you think about this.

I would definately have usage of that. I've always loved function pointers in C, and jump tables in assembler.

  • Getting "Method" objects

    hi, i'm trying to encapulate a method in an Object and utilize the methods in the Method Class.
    eg:
    void AMethod() {
    I want to get associated object for AMethod() and call methods in the Method Class with it. ie:
    object = AMethod.invoke();
    thanks

  • Using reflection to get method body

    Hi,
    I'm just getting into this side of program and while I understand the use of reflection in oredr to obtain the constructor and method, parameters, fields etc I was wondering if its possible to grab the method body and copy it into a string.
    So for example in the following class...
    class MyClass
    private String str;
    MyClass(){}
    public String MyMethod(String s)
    str=s;
    str=str+" was the String";
    System.out.println(str);
    return str;
    ...I need to capture just this code..
    str=s;
    str=str+" was the String";
    System.out.println(str);
    return str;
    ...as a string
    The reason i need to do this is that I'm programming a mechanism for storing objects and their methods using JDBC.. I could use object serialisation and store as a blob, but I'm wanting to store the attributes of a class as seperate parts so I can retrieve bits of code from the database at some later time.
    Thanks for any help you might give me
    peace
    neil

    You say that you are trying to store the method body
    into a database. This is to allow you to store an
    object and its methods into a database. Are you trying
    store the method text or its implementation (i.e class
    or java). If it is the implementation then just
    serialize the found method object using reflection.
    WHY are you doing this ?? what about private methods,
    class variables, class methods ???Hi, yes it is confusing to explain, but I'm experimenting with a new programming paradigm called AspectJ and I've only just got into Reflection. I'm creating a repository of Aspects (same as classes but with added functionality and some limitations) with JDBC and don't want to just serialise the object as a blob and so have created data tables to hold different parts of the anatomy of an Aspect and this was the only thing I was getting stuck on.
    The idea is that the user is able to recall these whole aspects (or a part of them such as a method) on the fly and use them in a program. I realise that ther will be problems because these methods may have other dependencies such as the ones you explain above but its just experimental at the moment and those are the kinds of things I'm wanting to find out more.
    I've seen examples of reflection for Objects but never for methods. So it is possible to capture just a method by serialisation using reflection? Any examples would be much appreciated.

  • How to get caller object reference from a method

    Hi,
    I am working a already existing Java Swing project, now I got a problem, in a method I need to get the caller object reference otherwise, I can't succeed this operation. So please tell me a way how to get the caller object reference from a method. that method would be static or regular method anything will do for me.

    Actually my doubt is, I have a method "addition" method, which is using by many classes so my requirement is in the addition method I want to write a code snippet which will identify and get the the caller object. Actually I tried Reflection.getcallerclass but there I am getting "CLASS" object not the actual object reference, but I want object reference.
    Actually we have a huge project which is writen plain JAVA, so in this project the authors written the Database connection package for single database transaction. so now we are using this project source code for JSF application in this web application the DB package has serve based on the dynamic db connection parameters, so if we want to change this package fully means need to solve the dependency problem in hundreds of classes, so my point is if I can access the caller object in the DB package when ever it gets called by any class from any where of the project. So actually I liked Reflection.getcallerclass, the way of implementation perfectly works for me but it is not giving caller object reference, if something gives the caller object then I can get the DB connection parameters then there is no need to pass the parameters in the hierarchy.You can add a parameter (of type Object) to your addition() method
    and everywhere you call the addition() method also pass this (which from the POW of the addition() method will be a reference to the calling class instance).
    There may be alternative solutions
    but none that require less effort.

  • A method layout without a target object causes a one-sided reclassificat.

    Dear experts,
    I am from BI background. I have been asked to do a testing in BCS and received the following message when I tried to generate NPAT:
    A method layout without a target object causes a one-sided reclassificat.
    Message no. UCF4008
    Diagnosis
    You have not defined a target object in the method layout.
    System Response
    This method will consequently perform a one-sided reclassification. It will only read records from the database with a posting level not equal to zero and will post them without a document type.
    Procedure
    Select the target object in order to define the method layout for a normal reclassification.
    As a result, NPAT has not been generated, so can you guys help me out to understand what is happening here?
    Thank you.

    I think you are using this reclassification technique for reclassifying Net income and Retained earnings.
    This message normal you get if
    1. If you have executed reclassification task in update mode once and posted NI and RE. or
    2. There is no NI or RE.

  • Reflection: result of getting Methods

    Hi
    I'm using reflection to see what methods a class has. When I do reflection on java.awt.Button I get the same method occuring more than once. (At the moment my code is a little rough around the edges so it might just be my code.) My Question: Do all overriden (potentially abstract) methods get listed by getMethods(). If this is the case which one of the two (or more) methods do I call invoke on?

    Methods in Java can be overridden and overloaded. Overloaded methods are distinguished by their signature, that is basically the list of parameters that a method is passed including the null or empty list.
    Overridden methods are methods which override a method from an inherited class.
    To query a class for locally declared methods you need to call getDeclaredMethods. The returns an array of Method objects for all methods declared specifically by the queried class.
    To query a class about ALL publicly declared methods then you call getMethods, this method returns an array of Method instances that are exposed by the class in question and ALL inherited classes.
    API information about querying a class for its properties can be found in the JavaDocs for java.lang.Class.
    The Method class has methods which are useful in determining things like access modifiers, thrown exceptions, parameter list etc.
    API information about Reflection and things like the Method class can be in the JavaDocs for java.lang.reflect package.
    It is also worth looking at the java.beans package(s) in detail as well, there are things in there that can of great use to you when dealing with Reflection and Introspection.

  • Problem extending standard ViewReceiptsSearchVO view object with logic on get method

    Hi All,
    EBS 12.1.3
    Database 11.2.0.3
    I am trying to extend the 3 VOs related to ViewReceiptsSearch.  I extended a seeded ViewReceiptsSearchVO view object.  I haven't made any changes yet, no columns added, nothing altered.  When I run this substitution, the "Received" column is null.  This column in the view used for the view object only selects NULL and uses the getter method for the attribute to populate the value.  The generated extension getter calls getAttributeInternal and skips the logic in the standard getter and the substituted view object is displaying the null in the screen.  The below discussion explains the problem very well except that the original posted had the issue in 11.5.10.2.  I am having this issue with 12.1.3.
    Problem extending standard view object with logic on get method
    The 3 VOs that I am having the problem are:
    ViewReceiptsSearchVO
    ViewReceiptsSearchReqVO
    ViewReceiptsSearchSupplierVO
    What do I need to do to get the "Received" column populated?  Please let me know any additional information you want to troubleshoot the issue.
    Thanks.

    ODI-1228: Task messagexml_document (Integration) fails on the target ORACLE connection S2_P1.
    Caused By: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-22950: cannot ORDER objects without MAP or ORDER method
    Can anybody tell me, what I am doing wrong? Code that generate this error is just a simple INSERT with SELECT and sub SELECT with JOIN?
    I just can't find anything about this error.
    I'm stuck :-(

    I discovered that one of my fields is an XMLType field and is a part of comparison ODI do when it tries to do incremental update. The error message here is just a message from db that it can't compare XMLType fields to each other.
    Is there any way to learn ODI to not to compare by XMLType field?

  • Trying to get a handle to an object using CVI_ActiveApp, but it opens a new CVI everytime it runs. Is there a way to get a handle to an object without it opening up a new CVI?

    I'm trying to get a handle to an object using CVI_ActiveApp. It works, but it opens a new CVI application when it is run using the command line. Is it possible to get a handle to an object without a new CVI application opening up?

    Hi,
    In the help documentation for the CVI_ActiveApp function, it states:
    "If the server application is already running, this function may or may not start another copy of the application. This is determined by the server application."

    I don't believe you have control over whether or not a second instance is started.

  • Dynamically call a getter method with reflection?

    I have a page that prints out some report info, but only for the group of columns requested. What I need to do, based upon a String containing a column name that is passed in as input, is call that column's getter method dynamically...
    Does anyone have any good examples of doing this?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Not sure if dynamic replacement of the property name works, but you could try
    <jsp:getProperty name="myBean" property="<%=request.getParameter("col1")%>"/>
    Where myBean is the name of your object and col1 is the name of your property, not the function name. So, if you have a function named getType(), then your variable is named type. So you would pass type as the property, like
    <jsp:getProperty name="myBean" property="type"/>
    This dynamically calls the getType() method on your object myBean.

  • How to get JComponent/Object declared name

    I've got a JFrame that declares standard JComponent objects like (JComboBox, JTextField)
    JComboBox  sampleComboBox = new JComboBox();I need a method that can return a name (String) of this declared method.
    public String getObjectDeclaredName(Object obj){}example:
    When I call
    getObjectDeclaredName(sampleComboBox )I want to get back
    "sampleComboBox " - as a String
    I know than there is getName, setName method in JComponent, but I don't want to name each component every time.
    I looked at the Field class in reflect package, but I couldn't find a way how to do this? Does anyone know how to write a method like that?
    Thanks,

    So if it's not stored by the compiler (which I belive it is), how would you explain the way the java.lang.reflect package works?
    Field[] fields = sampleFrame.getClass().getFields();Using the retrospection you can get access to all declared fields within the class. The thing that I need is to get a declared name of the specific object from the memory, which is a bit different.
    I know the class where the object is declared, so I can get all declared fields, and their names. But I can't find a way how to get a name of the field that I'm interested in. I mean how can I compare an Object to the Field representation of the same object without creating a new instance from this field.
    And of course there is another way of doing that, I can define static fields with the names of all fields, or use setName method within the JComponent, but that would involve extra work. So having reflect package it would be doing additional work
    Anyone knows how to do that?

  • Getting an object from HttpSession...

    Hi all,
    I am stuck which is according to me is very obvious...please correct me if I am wrong.
    I have a java.util.ArrayList object in my HttpSession object.
    Now in my helper class to which the request is passed from the servlet I am extracting this ArrayList object in one ArrayList object and putting it into the HashMap. After this, I am again extracting this ArrayList object from the HttpSession and assigning it to a newly created ArrayList object in my helper class. Now I am passing this newly created ArrayList object to a method. This method after processing changes this ArrayList object. And finally I am putting this changed ArrayList object in the HashMap I created earlier.
    After doing all this, when I am trying to extract and print these ArrayList Objects from the session object...I found my first ArrayList object has also been affected by the same change as the second one. The expected result was only the second object will be changed. I am stuck with this.
    I know it has something to do with references....but I am not able to understand that when I am trying to create two new copies by extracting an object from the Session...and changing one how is my second object getting affected. Any help will be appriciated.
    The code for this is as follows:
    "phSessionState" is a collection object in HttpSession which holds all the other objects. We are not putting different objects directly in the HttpSession.
    "LineObject" is a simple JavaBean kind of class with gettrs and setters
    ArrayList originalList = (ArrayList)phSessionState.getData("lineObjectList");
    HashMap stagedLineObjects = new HashMap();
    stagedLineObjects.put("OriginalList", originalList);
    //Extracting same in another object and calling a method to update it.
    ArrayList tempList = (ArrayList)phSessionState.getData("lineObjectList");
    //Method to update the ArrayList
    updateLineObjectList(tempList, request);
    stagedLineObjects.put("UpdatedList", tempList);
    //Trying to get the objects from the HashMap and print
    System.out.println("Retriving OriginalList...");
    ArrayList List1 = (ArrayList)stagedLineObjects.get("OriginalList");
    for(int i=0; i<List1.size(); i++)
         LineObject lo = (LineObject)List1.get(i);
         System.out.println(lo.getUserID() + "\t" + lo.getPassword()
    + "\t" + lo.getFirstName() + "\t" + lo.getMiddleName() + "\t" +
    lo.getLastName());
    System.out.println("Retriving UpdatedList...");
    ArrayList List2 = (ArrayList)stagedLineObjects.get("UpdatedList");
    for(int i=0; i<List2.size(); i++)
         LineObject lo = (LineObject)List2.get(i);
         System.out.println(lo.getUserID() + "\t" + lo.getPassword()
    + "\t" + lo.getFirstName() + "\t" + lo.getMiddleName() + "\t" +
    lo.getLastName());
    Waiting for your valuable help...
    Thanks & Regards,
    Gauz

    You must remember that objects are passed by reference. So when you are passing around your ArrayList, you are actually passing a reference to the ArrayList. In other words, there exists one instance of your specific ArrayList in memory and what you are passing around are copies of the "reference" to that memory location.
    If you want to pass a copy of your ArrayList, you can create a copy of the ArrayList and pass the reference to that new copy. One way to do this is as follows:ArrayList originalList = new ArrayList();
    //Let's put two objects into the ArrayList
    originalList.add(1, new StringBuffer("object1"));
    originalList.add(2, new StringBuffer("object2"));
    //Now let's copy the ArrayList
    ArrayList copyOfList = new ArrayList(originalList);
    //now, you have two copies of the ArrayList.  You can make
    //changes to copyOfList without affecting originalList
    copyOfList.add(3, new StringBuffer("object3"));
    //Checking the size of each ArrayList will demonstrate a difference
    System.out.println("Original's size is " + originalList.size());
    System.out.println("Copy's size is " + copyOfList.size());
    //Output should be:
    //  Original's size is 2
    //  Copy's size is 3Please keep in mind that the objects within the ArrayList are also being passed by reference. So if you modify an object within originalList, those modifications will be reflected in the same object found in copyOfList.
    For example,StringBuffer sb = (StringBuffer)copyOfList.get(1);
    sb.append(":modified");
    //Now print the values of the first object in each ArrayList
    StringBuffer sbFromOriginal = (StringBuffer)originalList.get(1);
    StringBuffer sbFromCopy = (StringBuffer)copyOfList.get(1);
    System.out.println("Original's value is " + sbFromOriginal.toString());
    System.out.println("Copy's value is " + sbFromCopy.toString());
    //Your output should read
    //  Original's value is object1:modified
    //  Copy's value is object1:modifiedThis is because you made a copy of the ArrayList, but not a copy of each object within the ArrayList. So you actually have two seperate copies of ArrayList but they are referencing the same two objects in positions 1 and 2. The object in position 3 exists only in copyOfList.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is it possible to find an instance of an object without it being passed to

    Hi all,
    I have a parser class "MessageParser" which i pass a message which is of type "String" to it for it to be parsed. The parsing method signature for the class is
    public void parse(String message);
    I need to pass an instance of "Properties" to it but i dont want to change the signature of the method to add a new argument to it. I have been struggling with this for the last couple of days and have tried a couple of options - see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5134462/sending-in-an-object-of-type-object-instead-of-string-polymorphism
    The class that calls the parsing method "ParserManager" knows of the properties object. Is there a way for the MessageParser to find the properties object without it being passed to it?
    Thanks
    ps - also posted in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5140795/is-it-possible-to-find-an-instance-of-an-object-without-it-being-passed-to-the-me

    The class that calls the parsing method "ParserManager" knows of the properties object. Is there a way for the MessageParser to find the properties object without it being passed to it?I completely agree with Kayaman if you can get away with only the passing the Properties once (as he suggests, at construction time).
    If you can't (ie, you must pass the Properties with each message), then I suspect you have a new type of Parser, and your design will have to reflect that.
    One possibility would be to extend Parser with a PropertiesParser interface that defines a new parse() method and either update the current ParserManager to "understand" the difference, or create a new one.
    The problem with the first option is that the manager then becomes a dispatcher, which kind of goes against the grain of OO programming (what if you need to add a third type of parser, or a fourth?).
    Another possibility (probably better) would be to create a variant of your MessageObject class that includes Properties, and a variant of your MessageCParser that knows how to deal with such an object.
    There are many ways to go, and only you probably know which is best.
    That said, if you can get away with passing the Properties once, definitely follow Kayaman's advice.
