Getting to ok prompt via serial console

Hi,
I have set up the console to be on ttya, and am using a terminal emulator on a PC to connect/watch the console.
Due to an error in the driver I am writing the system resets; I managed to stop the continuous reset cycle (it dies during the probe) by randomly pressing keys, and can now change the kernel to be booted to get back the system, but I would like to know what I can press to generate an intelligent sequence of keystrokes to emulate (for example) the Stop-D to get me back to the prom nicely so that I can change settings.
Alternatively, are there any other ways to get back the system and neatly delete my driver?
Thanks in advance,
S.

HI
Have you tried control + Break ? This is supposed to put the system
to the OK prompt in most PC's.Then you may have to boot the system through a CD ( boot cdrom -s), mount the root partition, remove the driver from /platform/kernel or wherever it is.
You may also boot through kadb ( boot kadb) which will drop you to kadb prompt on panic where you can say :c to get OK prompt in most cases.

  • Unwanted ok Prompt via Secure Console Switch?

We have 2 CS800's by Lightwave (now Lantronix)
    I merged them into 1 Lantronix SCS3205.
    16 devices, 1/2 HP-UX 1/2 SUN Solaris.
    HP boxes are fine.
Solaris boxes are at ok prompts! All I did was unplug from one console switch to the other. Done this 1000 times with a laptop.
Lantronix says to do this with the power off (I haven't had to in the past) or disable the "Hardware Break Feature" on the Sun box, but wouldn't this stop my use of stop+a ?
Sun has no idea what to do, help?

    kbd -a alternate
.. will make the system use the alternate break sequence, and disable the ordinary stop+a and serial BREAK signal, instead it will use <enter> ~ <ctrl + b>

  • Displaying to the monitor after installing via serial console?

    Hi Guys,
We have a couple of X2100's and a dell sc1425. All were installed using null-modem cable to the serial port which worked fine. However, now I want the servers to boot and display to the monitor and use the keyboard for input. I've got 06/06 installed and it doesn't have any mention of output-device or input-device in the bootenv.rc file and makes no difference if I change output-device to 'screen'. Do I need to do the Xorg -configure @ single user mode?
    Cheers,
    Russle

Just a thought, but try zapping the PRAM. Good luck.

There is no "Urgent" in these forums.
They are user-to-user forums and there is no one sitting around, waiting for you to ask a question.
Forum participants choose to respond on their own choice.
If you have a critical business need
(and that means your organization will go out of business unless you get a solution)
then you will need to use your service contract privileges and log a support ticket with ORACLE's technical support.
Your question is definitely not something that will put a company out of business.
Read the product documentation.   The answer surely is in there.

  • How to upgrade IP/KVM Console AF620A via serial interface?

    Hi
I've got a "HP 1x1Ex8 KVM IP Console Switch G2 with Virtual Media CAC Software - AF620A" which is not booting correctly anymore.
    Symptoms:
    - blank screen
    - status leds constantly blinking
    - serial output hangs after "Booting:1.2.10.15038"
Hooking up to the serial interface, the terminal gives me, that the current version as well as the alternate version of the used firmware is 1.2.10.15038. As far as I was able to find out, I should upgrade to the latest firmware in order to get rid of the problem and make the device usable again.
My problem is, that I don't know how to upgrade the firmware via the serial console, knowing that the device is not booting up the firmware.
Yes, I've done a factory reset as well as a configuration reset. No change ...
I've opened up the case to see if there is any hardware reset button, but there is none. The only thing I found is a 4pin header labeled "HDR2" but neither the user guide not the technical guide gives any details about the interior of the device (of course not ...).
Has anyone had the same problem with this or any similar device?
Or does anyone has a good advice what I could try to revive the KVM?
    greetings

I finally got through the helpline, but as my device is out of warranty, the official solution for my problem is to buy a new device!
Ending is better than mending ... welcome our the brave new world ...

  • No access to serial console in ACS appliance 111

We have 2 Cisco ACS appliances running version ...
    Cisco Secure ACS 3.2.2.5
    Appliance Management Software 3.2.2.5
    Appliance Base Image 3.2.2.1
The fact is that after initial setup, we have never used the console mainly because in a production environment we manage them through the Web Admin application. Now we have decided to upgrade both appliances to the latest version (3.3.3) and when we tried to connect to the serial console (115200,N,8,1, no flow control) we don't get any response from none of both ACS. It's quiet strange but we have found no way to make them work. We have tried several things I expose to you in case you can give us any hint:
    1. We have rebooted the appliance and we can see through the console all the start-up process but when it finally finishes the start-up, we see no login prompt.
    2. We have also shutdown the appliance properly and power it off and on again. Same results. The appliances boot normal but still we don't have console access.
    3. We have tried boot the appliance with the recovery CD-ROM and the console works fine. I can reset the Admin password, but when it restart from its own system ( I mean without the recovery CD_ROM), I can see all the starting messages but when it finish the start-up process ... no console access.
    4. Finally I have connected a monitor and a keyboard to the appliance ( I know Cisco dosn not recommned it but when in trouble....) and I see the full start-up process and it includes the base Windows 2000 server operating system startup. When Windows finishes loading, we get a lock screen in which the appliance informs you that it have started correctly and that we could access it for management through the serial console port or through the web console. 10 seconds later I see a pop up window stating that on or more services have not started correctly and that we shoulkd check the Event viewer, something we wished we could do but as you you, this is a secured system and I don't know if there is a back door method to verify windows services in this appliance.
Any help would be appreciated, as the problem is identical in both the appliances and upgrading them without access to the admin console is difficult and risky.
    Kind regards.

    Hi
I had similair problem being locked out of console after initial configuration wizard.
I think there is a bug within the console session in that if you input a hostname of more than 15 characters, it locks up the ACS service when the server reboots. If you keep your hostname to less than 15 characters, the server reboots and you get console access. If you then access the GUI, you will see that 15 characters is the maximum, and you cannot enetr any more than this. This is not the case with the console, where you can enter more than 15 without getting an error message.
I rescued the server by doing F8 and rebooting server with last known good configuration. from there, you can reset the hostname to something valid. You can check to see which CS services are running through console session, and start any services that may not be running..
    deliverance1> start CSAgent
    Starting service: CSAgent..
    CSAgent is starting
    CSAgent is running

  • Serial Console for VM Manager not working

I can't seem to connect to an SPARC VM created via the Oracle VM Manager. The serial console opens and appears to connect to a port on my local desktop machine from which I'm running my browser but fails to connect. I'm assuming VM Manager serial console uses a tunneling technology? Is there anything anyone can think of that would help me debug this session? I've turned off the firewall on my desktop and turned off iptables
My VM's don't have IP's yet, so I can't directly ssh to them. There's a chance my VM's are bad, but I really don't know how to troubleshoot since I can't get a console. (I created these VM's from the Oracle provided templates.)
Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips?

It sounds like you've installed the JTA package on the system running the manager - that's a necessary first step. The other things that can affect this include enabling popups (sounds like you have that correct too) and the combination of browser, JVM on client, and OS. I've had the best results with JVM 6 or with the very latest JVM 7 (build 21). Hope this helps, Jeff

  • Install over serial console

    Hi all,
I've recently purchased an Ultra5 that I'm using to learn a bit more about SPARC Solaris (previously used x86). However, my cheapo PC VGA monitor can't handle the Sun resolutions, particularly the one used by the console on boot-up (everything from the OpenBoot banner to dtlogin, at which point I can use my monitor). I'm intending to update the system from Solaris 8 to 9 once I get my media pack - but I'll have to do it via the serial console.
Has anyone here installed Solaris via the serial console - if so, what should I expect, and are there any particular "gotchas" ? I've used the OpenWindows-based setup on x86 and SPARC, but I've never encountered the command-line version. Does it follow the same steps, just as text - or are there major differences ?
Any information or pointers would be much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    -Mark

As long as your cursor keys (arrows up, down, left & right) and Tab key work you should be all set.
boot cdrom - w (space on both sides) will get you started with "no windows" option. It's a lot faster since you don't have to load up WebStart or OpenWin from the CD. Don't bother with Install CD. Laying out filesystems can be a little trickey but you'll get the hang of it. Ctrl d is down a page & Ctrl u is up a page if you get into large menus.

  • How do i get the Ok prompt on Sun E250 from a windows keyboard

I have tried the F5 and ctrl+alt+pause options to get the ok prompt without any success and at what point do I invoke the stop? What key combination from a windows key board would achieve the STOP effect like a sun keyboard.
I would like to solve this problem /var/adm/utmpx not owned by root or not mode 644 error?, how do i solve it ? Help me out guys. Am very much a newbie with all this.
NB am working from a hyperterminal seession.

I assume you mean that you are using a serial line console. If this is set up in the default way, then sending an RS-232 BREAK sequence should drop you to the boot prompt. I've no idea how to do this from Hyperterminal, but there should be an option to do it in one of the menus somewhere. Alternatively, physically disconnecting then reconnecting the serial line is often interpreted as a BREAK.

  • Sparc 20 stuck in diagnostics loop on serial console

    Hi,
I've got a SPARCstation 20 (old I know) connected to my laptop via a serial null modem cable which works wonderfully. Only problem is that I enabled diag-switch? to true and reset the machine. It's now stuck in a loop Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet as it's set to network boot (it has no disk in it). I can't break to the monitor ok prompt either by sending breaks, ~# combos or anything else. I've used both Vandyke SecureCRT and Hyperterminal to no avail. It's just stuck.
Any ideas how to drop to the ok prompt over a serial console when it's stuck in an ARP/RARP loop?

    Chris,
Try an alternative terminal program, as well.
I've used TeraTerm on every flavor of Windows from Win95a through WinXP-Pro{SP2}.
    (... and it's been the ancient version 2.30, that I've used ! )
It has a native, mouse-able, keystroke sequence for the Break signal [Alt-B]
    TeraTerm is freeware, not shareware.

  • How to transfer file from PC to PC via serial port using labview

I need to transfer files(.txt, .doc, .xls) from PC to PC via serial port using LabVIEW. Is it possible to transfer files, if so how to transfer?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yes, it is possible to transfer files with the serial port using LabVIEW.  Files are just collections of bytes and the serial port is pretty good at shipping bytes from one PC to another.  You need to connect the serial ports together with a null modem cable.
First, take a look at the example for serial communication.   In LabVIEW, go to the Help menu and select "Find Examples...".  From there you can search for "serial" or navigate to Hardware Input and Output >> Serial.  Select the "Basic Serial Write and Read.vi".  Experiment with that example to gain confidence on the serial communication methods.
Next, it's time to learn about how to read and write files.  For that, the examples could be somewhat confusing since they all deal with files that are presumed to have data of a specific type in them.  I would recommend just getting familiar with the functions on the File I/O palette.  Specifically, get to know the following functions.
Open/Create/Replace File - On your destination side, you'll need to create the copy of the file that you are trying to transfer
Close File - When you are finished reading from or writing to a file, you should close it.  It cleans up the memory being used and finalizes any write operations that are still floating in the write buffer.
Read From Binary File - The best way to read from a file when you do not really care what type of file it is.  In your case, you just want to get those bytes read and sent out so they can be written down at the destination.
Write to Binary File - At the destination side, this is what will store those bytes to the file you created with number 1.
Get File Size (under the Advanced File Functions sub-palette) - You need to know how big the file is so you know when you are finished.
OK, so once you are able to create files, write bytes to them, and read bytes from existing files you can move on to transferring.
The basic method I would suggest is to have the user specify a source file on the source PC and a destination folder on the destination PC.  Then, find out the size of the source file using number 5.  Divide that size number by the number of bytes you feel like transferring at once.  The serial buffers are usually around 32k (if I remember correctly) so do not exceed that.  Now begin sending data by reading some number of bytes and wiring that string output to the VISA Write function.  On the destination side, you'll want to be monitoring the serial port for bytes and reading them when they arrive.  Wire that string to the Write to Binary File function to add them to your destination file.
That is the basic outline of how to do it.  You have to be careful not to overload the write and read buffers on the serial ports.  Initially you can use delays on the sending side to make sure the reading side has enough time to digest.  To get things moving faster, you can bring in some flow control.
If all that sounds a bit intimidating, there are Alliance Member companies out there (such as PrimeTest Automation) who can write such code for you and even provide a turnkey solution for you.

  • I want to send 10 bit ADC from PIC via serial communicaton. i send it separetly 8 bit first then the other 2 bit. how to program in labview to capture those two packet then combine it togother

i want to send 10 bit ADC from PIC mCu via serial communicaton.
i send it separetly 8 bit first then the other 2 bit (2 bit --> with zero at 6 bit from LSB).
how to program in labview to capture those two packet and then combine it together
so i have 10 bit in lab view
    thank you

Close, but now quite. You need to specify to the VISA Read how many bytes to read, not how many bits. Thus, the input would be 2, not 16. It's also not clear why you're trying to use the "String to Byte Array". The Type Cast will give you a number based on what data type you wired. You're basically telling it how to interpret the string. In this case we're telling it to interpret the string a 16-bit value, so we'll get a 16-bit integer. I know you said you wanted a 10-bit, but you can't have that. You'll get a 16-bit with 6 bits set to zero. Note: I did not completely understand what you said so we may need to change this slightly, but we want to get the communication and reading collection working first.
Also, since you seem to be setting this in a loop you probably want to monitor this or to collect the data. For that you need a shift register. See attached for a modified version of your attempt. You need to set the datatype to I16 or U16 based on whether the value you get from the PIC is signed or unsigned.

  • Ultra sparc IIe insalling solaris with serial console

I bought a sparc and I'm trying to install solaris 10. It came with solaris installed on a 15gb hard drive, and I want to replace the hard drive.
As it came, when I boot, it says that no keyboard was detected and that ttya will be used for input/output. Then X starts and I can use the USB keyboard and mouse.
When attempting to install, with a blank hard drive installed, I get the same message, then the screen goes black. So, I've hooked up a terminal emulator running on linux (cutecom), and I can see messages on the console, but I can't seem to get a prompt. It says OpenBoot etc. then bad magic number in disk label, then "Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet" over and over.
Is there some key stroke I need to send to get a prompt? I've tried various keystrokes.
