Gimp Newbie Needs Basic Instructions in Formatting Stills for FCP

Sorry if this is redundant or too basic for the forum, but I'm new to Gimp (and honestly, photo editing in general) and need some basics. Tutorials, links, etc appreciated.
My question... In Photoshop, I can select a pixel aspect ratio that gives me the option of DV, widescreen, anamorphic, and others. Is there a similar feature in Gimp? If not, is there a process that you are using to prepare high resolution still photos for importing into FCP?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

*** is Gimp?
Anyway, I don't prepare hi-res, medium-res or even low-res photos for FCP. I import them and drop 'em on the Timeline (FCP will automatically scale them to Sequence and correct pixel aspect). Once I have them in FCP I can see how they look on an external TV monitor. After viewing them there, if they need any PS adjustments, I right-click on it in the Timeline and choose "Open in Editor" (Photoshop is set as my default still image editor in FCP preferences).
If adjustments are needed, it's typically rotation, contrast*, color balance*, fixing areas of the image that might cause morie patterns on a TV, etc. When I'm done in PS, I save the changes and close the image and jump back over to FCP where the changes were automatically updated to the image on the Timeline.
-DH
* = can also be done right in FCP with the 3-Way Color Corrector

  • Newbie needs basics

Hi chaps ... I have just acquired a sony dcr hc 19e easycam and seem to be able to capture direct into imovie on my G4 ... I know nothing about imovie ... where's the best resource for some basic instruction please ... I work already in After Effects and probably don't want any of imovie's sophistication just the ability to capture and then, I guess, export with NO quality loss or compression ... one thing I noticed today was that imovie, when capturing, created 2 clips ... is there a file size-limit or something ? ... thanks for your time ... regards ... Roger

Hi Roger - have a look here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/
Regarding clip-size, effectively there is no limit. What has probably caused this is that you have 'Start a New Clip at Each Scene Break' ticked in iMovie's Preferences(iMovie HD>Preferences). Anyway, it may be best to leave that box ticked, as it is more convenient for editing purposes. The clip separation does not show during playback.

  • I need help finding a training course for FCP X

I am on Larry Jordan's site, but that only involves watching videos.  I learn better by working on a project at the same time.  This newbie needs some direction.  I need a hands on training course.  Please help.

As some of the others have stated both Ripple Training and Lynda.com are excellent options. Lynda.com offers a very wide range of training (including Logic Pro X, Motion 5, Compressor 4, etc.) that you can access via subscription. If you want to work directly with project files then you will need the higher end subscription to download the course files. Lynda.com just updated their FCPX training to the latest version of the software. Ripple Training is also excellent, and comes from the guys behind the FCPX & Motion certification courses. Their training is offered a la carte, and will run you a few hundred dollars to get everything.
Another great option is MacProVideo.com, they offer both purchases and subscriptions and have a decent range of courses. Their new Film Craft series isn't about FCPX, but is absolutely worth taking if you're new to the industry. They have great FCPX training, but are much more geared towards music programs.
You aren't likely to find a one size fits all approach to your training needs, and honestly, if you've got the time, complete as many of them as possible. Both Lynda and Ripple offer excellent courses on the art of editing. Ripple Training's Motion courses are second to none.
One more option would be taking a course at an Apple Certified Training Center. I didn't do this for FCPX, but did for my Logic Pro X & Motion 5 certifications and it worked out very well. The downsides are that it's very expensive, but you get to sit with an instructor, ask questions, and at the end of the course you can take the certification exam for free (well, included in your class). You really can't go wrong as long as you keep your education moving forward.

  • Need basic instructions to enable XP machine to share Vista iTunes

iTunes is running fine on my new Vista desktop. However, my XP laptop cannot see the iTunes on Vista so I cannot play my music in other rooms using my wireless network. Is there a basic tutorial for setting up my Vista and XP machines to enable this?
    Thx.

Simply enable the SMB server in workgroup manager. Unless you customized your share points, they will automatically be available via the SMB protocol as well as the AFP protocol. With the service active, test from your Mac with:
1: in Finder, go to the Go menu and choose Connect to Server
2: in the address box type: smb://<ipor_host_name_ofserver>
    3: press connect
Can you connect to your shares from the Mac? If so, then do this on Windows.
1: Open the My Computer window
2: From the Tools menu select Map Network Drive
3: You can try to hit the browse button to find the server and the share or you can
    a: select a drive letter
b: define the network path like
    \\<ipor_host_name_ofserver>\share name
c: click the connect as different user link and put in the users credentials
d: leave the box checked for connect at login
That should get you want you want with little extra work. If you are running an Open Directory Master on your OS X Server, you can go further and join the Windows system to the domain for centralized user management. Not sure if that is a priority for you. You may only care about the share point access.
    Hope this helps

  • Newbie needs basic help-HELP!(configuration)

I've got Solaris installed on my amd box which has a Radeon vid card and a d-link nic (DFE-530TX+).
So right now I only have 16-bit VGA which is hard to navigate and I don't have net connection. So on my windows box which has a network connection, I downloaded the patches I need for the vid/nic cards and saved them to floppy.
Could someone walk me through the steps/commands I need to use to mount my floppy and copy the appropriate files etc off of them, unzip, and install?
I'm trying to learn solaris but first just need to enable a decent gui with a net connection. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, if you think it would be easier for me, on my Solaris/amd box, I'm also dual booting w/ win2k so maybe I could somehow mount the windows partition and avoid dealing w/ the floppy? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Nick,
once you have the vpn tunnel established, you 'should' be able to browse the other macs on the network as you would at work. This of course is dependent on the other systems annoucing themselves vs. you having to specificy an IP and /or name - but yes, once you have the vpn setup, you should be able to see the other machines with shared folders.
You could as you suggested just open ports on your work firewall that would allow apple file sharing, and then from home, connect the the firewall IP on the internet (using dyn dns if your work ip is not static), and map to the drives. This is less secure that the vpn as, once the ports are open at work, your mac passwords are the only thing protecting your folders and data. I don't use filemaker, but it all you need is folder access to the database then this is a cheaper alternative. Just setup your router to forward requests for port 548 (Apple file sharing) to the mac with the database folder. Just backwards from what your described you did previously. Just make sure you have good security setup on the 'server'.

  • Newbie - need help with a SQL query for a bar chart

    Hi,
I'm a new user on APEX with no real SQL knowledge and I'm trying to build a dashboard with charts into an existing APEX application. Based on another application, I have come up with the following SQL code:
    select null link
    , CATEGORY label
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'1',PROJECT_ID))"Active"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'2',PROJECT_ID))"Complete"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'3',PROJECT_ID))"On Hold"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'4',PROJECT_ID))"Pipeline"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'5',PROJECT_ID))"Pending Review"
    from GRAPO_PROHEADTRK
    where (PROJECT_STATUS='1' or PROJECT_STATUS='2' or PROJECT_STATUS='3' or PROJECT_STATUS='4' or PROJECT_STATUS='5' or PROJECT_STATUS='6')
    group by CATEGORY
    Order by COUNT(PROJECT_ID) DESC
The code from the other app was:
    select null link
    , FUNCTIONAL_AREA label
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'Active',PROJECT_ID))"Active"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'Complete',PROJECT_ID))"Complete"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'On Hold',PROJECT_ID)) "On Hold"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'Recurring',PROJECT_ID))"Recurring"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'Pipeline',PROJECT_ID))"Pipeline"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'Not Approved',PROJECT_ID))"Not Approved"
    from PM_V2
    where LOB='S2S' and (FUNCTIONAL_AREA='Accounts Payable' or FUNCTIONAL_AREA='Expense' or FUNCTIONAL_AREA='Procurement' or FUNCTIONAL_AREA='Fixed Assets')
    group by FUNCTIONAL_AREA
    Order by COUNT(PROJECT_ID) DESC
I'm getting a "Failed to parse SQL query!" error when I try to run validation.
Is this enough info for some assistance? Any help would really be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rachel

    Hello,
This is more of an SQL question, rather than specifically APEX-related. It's notable that you say: I'm a new user on APEX with no real SQL knowledgeWhich is fine (we all have to start somewhere, afterall) but it might be worth de-coupling the problem from APEX in the first instance. I'd also strongly recommend either taking a course, reading a book (e.g. http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=r5vbGgz7TFsC&printsec=frontcover&dq=Mastering+Oracle+SQL&hl=en#v=onepage&q=Mastering%20Oracle%20SQL&f=false) or looking for a basic SQL tutorial - it will save you a whole lot of heartache, I promise you. Search the oracle forums for the terms "Basic SQL Tutorial" and you should come up with a bunch of results.
Given that you've copied your query template from another, I would suggest ensuring that the actual query works first of all. Try running it in either:
    * SQL Editor
    * SQL*Plus
    * an IDE like SQL Developer (available free from the OTN: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html ) or TOAD or similar.
You may find there are syntax errors associated with the query - it's difficult to tell without looking at your data model.
    select null link
    , CATEGORY label
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'1',PROJECT_ID))"Active"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'2',PROJECT_ID))"Complete"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'3',PROJECT_ID))"On Hold"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'4',PROJECT_ID))"Pipeline"
    , count (decode(PROJECT_STATUS,'5',PROJECT_ID))"Pending Review"
    from GRAPO_PROHEADTRK
    where (PROJECT_STATUS='1' or PROJECT_STATUS='2' or PROJECT_STATUS='3' or PROJECT_STATUS='4' or PROJECT_STATUS='5' or PROJECT_STATUS='6')
group by CATEGORYNote that your "order by" clause references a field called "PROJECT_ID", which exists in the old query but you've changed other similar references to "PROJECT_STATUS" - is it possible you've just missed this one? The perils of copy-paste coding I'm afraid...

  • Newbie needs tips on Mac RAID systems for DAM

Hi group wondering if anyone would mind sharing their knowledge, I am researching DAM for a client of mine I own a digital tech business (photography connected front and back end) I have been asked to provide DAM services off site for a photographer/video director. He has about 10 terabytes and would like me to have a T1 line, off site back up, and web access for himself and his clients to their respective files as well me having the adm. privileges if of a problem with any of his clients. He already told me I will be needing to hire an IT person so if any of you have experience in this arena and are near LAX in Ca. send an email to me at info at ladigitaltech.com If anyone has any tips other than the classes via apple or the two 10.4 books on listed on another post I'd love to hear from you. This might be a too daunting of task since I am not an IT person at all and I do not know Apache, or much web related code. I have already figured it will cost around 18k to get this going, but I would love to hear from you online or offline. Thank you to all who can reply best David

I can't address all your points but off the top of my head I would place the very base hardware price tag at a minimum of $30K plus infrastructure, back-up and T1 installation and costs. Since a fully loaded XRAID holds 7TB to support 10 TB you will need _at least_ 1 fully loaded XRAID and another half of one. And that point you might as well go with 2 fully loaded and do RAID 5 to get redundancy - but that doesn't leave you much expansion room. You will also an Xserve to run web, ftp and share the files - that's 2x 13K and 1x 4K (at least) so that's $30,000 without even trying and you're very close to the limitations of your storage. If he wants to add another 2TB of images you're committed to more hardware. And reliable back-up of these kinds of file sizes is not a simple matter or cheap either. You might be able to get away with a 7 tape loader Magnum or something but to do it right the 21 tape 221 LTO FC will require a fibre channel switch at 5K and is another $16K and $3K in tape costs just to get started.
I would place a spitball estimate of this project at a minimum raw cost of $60-65K and then you have service contracts, IT, programming and continuing tape costs - and in there somewhere I suspect you want to make some money too. I think the first thing you need to do is find a reliable IT guy to cost out a reliable estimate for you that includes both up front and continuing costs and then you would need to mark-up and pad that estimate until you feel confident you will make a profit on all this and pass that onto your client.
Tread carefully before committing to anything without taking this step.
    Good luck,
    =Tod

  • Over from PC...Need help configuringing my Mac Pro for FCP

Just made the move a few weeks to Mac. Bought a Mac Pro ( and 2 Samsung T240 monitors) and am upgrading components for use with FCP. I have been editing for about 10 years (mostly volleyball highlight films and fishing videos) in Premiere Pro. I am currently using the Sony Vx-1000 but will be purchasing either the Sony EX-1 or HVR-Z7U to shoot and edit in HD while still doing some work in SD. I do maybe two or three 40 minute videos per year and some other shorter projects. I edit mainly for friends and family....not as a business. Here are the upgrades which I will be doing:
    1. Add 6 GB Ram to the already 2 GB's for a total of 8 1GB chips
    2. Install a Decklink HD Extreme card
These is where I need advice:
    STORAGE...
I am reading lots about external hard drives for editing. I am assuming that FCP would be on the operating system drive and the scratch disk(s) would be firewire (800) drive(s). I also read somewhere that Time Machine is not designed to back up video editing machines. I do not know if that is true with the smaller amount of work that I do. That would probably change how my storage is set up if Time Machine will not be backing up my files.
Overall I am a recreational editor and but would like a system that is current for editing in High Defintion (and I guess Standard Definition at times.)
Any advice would be much appreciated and I am really looking forward to the "Mac Experience"
    Thanks
    Kirk

Thanks for that Nick and Jerry.
I now think that the external hard drive posts that I was looking at were for machines that did not have the capability of adding internal hard drives.
I actually have ordered a 1TB Samsung HD103UJ SATA2 32M (as per the Barefeats tests). Hoping that it would be a suitable internal dive.
For the small amount of editing I do I am guessing that doing a raid would not be all that necessary.
And Nick, I do not think that I was looking for a bootable drive for Time Machine, just something that has a copy of my video clips from my different projects in case I have some sort of hard drive incident. I understand how running Time Machine during editing would not be a good idea, but would it be ok to use it to back up my video files if I just ran it each night after editing. I am taking it that FCP has an auto save feature also for my projects backups.
I had actually already ordered a Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 3.5-Inch Hard Drive for the time machine drive. Should I be getting a firewire drive for that instead of USB?
This is a brave new journey.....but I am really enjoying it.
    Thanks agian

  • Need help picking Mac Book specifications for FCP

Okay. . .dumb beginners question here:
Which MacBook and how should it be configured would you order to run latest version of FCP?
I'm ready to order one and to order FCP.
    TIA
    Pending     Pending

agreed. a MacBook Pro is what you will need if you wish to take full advantage of all the software in the FCS1 bundle, even more so for FCS2.
My preference is for the 17". Although obviously larger and heavier, it has the screen real estate that you need for the Pro apps.
Internal hard disc, bigger but slower or smaller and faster? I'd go for the bigger but slower (unless you can get one of those new 200GB 7200rpm toshiba drives which is best of both worlds). Why wouldn't I go for the 7200 Rpm ? Well first, my internal is not my media drive. Even so, I've never actually had a problem with the slower laptop drives for capture or playback at a pinch, but I may have just been lucky in that regard. So, for me, given that discs have a habit of filling up with crap, and given it is not my primary media drive, then bigger is better.
RAM? As much as you can afford. 3GB is the current limit for the MBP's.
As we all know, OSes and app's have a RAM hungry nature which seems to know no bounds. As things progress, 3GB will not seem like so much.
External media drive? Yes of course, highly recommended. If you don’t have one then your internal disc will be eaten up by clip media in no time (especially if you opted for the smaller faster internal disc... And, as noted above, if you get an external drive for your media then the speed of your internal drive is les of an issue). There are a number of options for external HD. There is one primary questions that you need to answer. Do you envisage needing to edit in the field without any access to a power supply ?
If the answer is “yes”, then you need to buy a “bus-powered” solution ie one that can be powered just by plugging it into the laptop. This limits you to using a laptop hard disc in an external Firewire enclosure. As mentioned before, laptop drives have a smaller capacity than their desktop cousins (and they’re more expensive). The best bus-powered solution is either G-Technology’s “G-RAID Mini” or Lacie’s “Little Big Disk”. Both contain 2x160GB hard discs in a hardware RAID, and connect via Firewire 800. This makes them very fast, and gives them a larger capacity (320GB). They are very reliable but also very expensive. Single disc solutions are of course much cheaper. You can buy these from the big brand names too (Lacie’s “Rugged” line are supposed to be hard wearing), or you need not go with a ‘brand name’ drive at all. You can buy the discs and Firewire based drive enclosures separately in most computer malls, and then put them together yourself. These would not be RAID solutions of course, so not as fast and not the same capacity ... But much cheaper.
If “bus-powered” is not necessary then your other choices expand significantly. Currently the best (and fastest) option would be an SATA RAID. This requires using an ExpressCard/34 eSATA adapter in the laptop to provide the eSATA interface for the RAID. SATA drives/interface are very much faster than Firewire. You could add a single drive or an entire eSATA RAID. If SATA is overkill for your needs then you can choose a external firewire drive. My drive of choice for this is G-Technology’s “G-RAID” which has a large capacity, and is fast and very reliable. Again, its not cheap.
Don’t buy a USB harddrive. They cannot maintain a fast enough sustained data rate such as is needed for working with video.

  • Been using Windows formatted ipod for months SUDDENLY itunes cant recognize

I've been using my Windows formatted first edition 30gb Video ipod with my Mac Pro itunes since last April when I got it. Now suddenly(before new itunes upgrade) it says it cannot identify my ipod because it is formatted for Windows and that I need to restore it, formatting it for Mac.
Why has this happened after it working fine for so long?
It wouldn't be that big of deal but I have a lot of music on this ipod that I don't have anymore in any other place.
    What can I do?

Is that something that happened AFTER you updated to iTunes 8, assuming you did?
You might try something like Yamipod, which is free and available for both Windows and Mac, that you can use to read the stuff off the iPod into your computer that isn't already in your library.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • Need help with HD formatting instruction?

    Hi,
I am planing to get and external HD for my iTunes Library. The external HD will be used with my G5 for now but I will most likely upgrade to an Intel MacPro within the next year.
    Question:
How should I format my external HD to make sure that it will also work with the IntelMac some day?
I have read some threads and I am very confused about the GUI or Apple partition/ format. Also what is " Mac OS Extended (journaled)".
    How to proceed?
    Thanks
    F

    Hi-
If you don't plan on using the drive for a boot drive, the partition format doesn't matter, If the drive will be used for booting, a PPC will only boot from an APM formatted drive. An Intel will only boot from a GUID formatted drive. If you are running Tiger version 10.4.6 or later, the PPC will be able to use a GUID formatted drive for data purposes with no problem, you just can't put a bootable clone on it. An Intel machine will use a data disk in the APM format, but won't be able to boot from it.
The Mac OS Extended is the base formatting method of the drive. This formatting dictates how files are handled and the size limits of an individual file:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25557
Journaled refers to a protective mechanism that allows for protection of files in certain circumstances:

  • MacBook - Newbie: Need help on printing wirelessly to XP shared printer

MacBook - Newbie: Need help on printing to XP shared printer
Bear with me please. I read tons of articles on this but somehow as a newbie to MAC (girlfriends sick daughter), I am missing something. 10.5.2
Currently, she can print directly if we plug in the HP Deskjet printer directly via USB to the MACBook. No problem.
When we first got the MACBOOK I tried setting up the MACBOOK wirelessly to recognize the workgroup where the printer was attached via USB to the Windows XP PC. However it printed out garbage since I did not know there was a difference between XP printing and MAC (Gutenberg/gimp printing/drivers).
Now I know there is a difference.
But in reading various instructions, I no longer can find how to connect the MAC to the Windows workgroup. Note we do have a printer set up currently as USB-HP Deskjet on the Macbook (not sure I need to delete it yet).
I went to System Preferences on MACBOOK and clicked on printers, more printers. In the drop down box was CANON, APPLETALK, IP HP printing and Firewire. There was no WINDOWS selection as I saw in other online web instructions.
So not sure how to proceed to find a way to:
    1. Connect to Windows workgroup (click on what exactly), step by step please!!
    2. Add correct HP Deskjet 5490 printer (perhaps there is one with Gutenberg or perhaps I need Gutenprint-really not sure what I am talking about)
Thanks so much in advance. Fiancé's kid has had her cancer recur in a different place and someone was nice enough to buy her a MACBOOK as a gift.
    Sincerely

OK...I figured it out...no need to reply.  I noticed that there was another Protocol to use to set up the printer on the Mac, I was using LPD, so I switched it to HP Jet Direct-socket, and it prints fine...thanks.  I am curious as to why LPD wouldn't work; if anyone has that answer I would like to know...thanks
Any chance of posting the Protocol you used to connect to your printer with your laptop?  I'm have the exact same problem printing from my MB.  Same error message "..is busy".

  • Best way to go from HDD to SSD with basic instructions?

I have switched over hard drives multiple times on a PC but I have never tried to do it on a Mac. I am wondering what would be the best programs to use, and roughly how would I go about it (this is where the basic instructions would come in) in Lion? I made a recovery disc with a usb but is that all I need to reinstall Lion? Do I need to specially format the SSD if I am making a copy of my previous OS as in windows? Would it be better (since I have only had the macbook for a month and there isn't alot on it) to just install the SSD and do a fresh install of Lion and reinstall all the programs?

You can use the external case to put your old internal drive in, that way you'll have something for additional storage, or backup.
If $10 is too much I have no further way to help you.

  • Need basic advice on images in IL copied to Word

Some time ago I started using IL instead of PPT for my basic vector graphics.  The images are then used on web sites or in documents.  I sorta know how to place images in ID but I'm having a hard time getting good quality results when I use them in Word if I need to do any scaling.
I use this technique:  Determine the physical dimensions of the image in Word.  Within IL I Select All and then scale to the appropriate %.  I then export as a bmp (300dpi) and finally insert the bmp in the Word document.  I'm getting bad line edges.
There has to be a science and art to doing this and I benefit from some learning.
Would someone point me to info on file formats, resizing, etc. so I can up to speed?  There has to be a simple tutorial out there that also helps explain all the file formats.
    Tom

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
I assume one gets better print quality if a DPI flag is present.
No. What you're referring to as "a DPI flag" is just a scale factor. Many raster formats do not store a scale factor. Even those that do may be be ignored by the program into which it is imported.
Because it's just a scale factor, it is simple to compensate, regardless of file format. For example, if you place a 72 PPI image (it's better to refer to raster resolution as Pixels Per Inch, not Dots Per Inch) into a layout, and then scale it to 50%, its PPI will then be 144.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
A little later there's a post suggesting emf for Office.  I tried that but the quality of the graphics still are very poor....The graphics is pretty simple.  A few rounded rectangle boxes, a couple straight lines, and text areas.
Depends on content. Fills? Grads? Version? Without gettting into alot of object-specific caveats, just try it. If you get unsatisfactory results, you'll have to resort to a raster format. Use PNG.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
I ran the same test using a png.  The rectangle lines are much better as is the text but the text is a little "bolder" than the original and just slightly blurry.
Try toggling the option for either Type Optimized or Art Optimized. It's accessible in the PNG export dialog and in the Save For Web dialog.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
...is there any easy explanation why these export formats perform differently in Word (for my education)?
Rasterization is, by its nature, a compromise. That's one reason why vector graphics exist. When working with office applications, resorting to raster formats is often unavoidable. Office apps simply do not support the kinds of vector graphics which (PostScript) programs designed for the print world do. Again, that's why print-oriented graphics programs exist. Word, for example, doesn't know didly about printing color separations.
Similarly, web browsers ignore the scale factors embedded in images; instead you code the image scaling in the HTML.
So the simple fact is, not all programs can handle the "higher end" functionality of cubic Bezier curves, CMYK images, etc., etc. So one has to find acceptable "lowest common denominators," which--when speaking of graphics--usually means restorting to raster images and accepting the inherent limitations of that.
On the other hand, Illustrator can't handle things as basic as data merge or tables, either.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Is it possible there's something about my graphics (font chosen, stroke size, ???) that makes it difficult for these transforms?
You're dealing with rasterization and anti-aliasing. Again, it's a compromize required whenever working with raster formats. If you don't anti-alias, you get "less fuzzy" text at small sizes, but you also get more jagged edges in vector objects.
You just have to have realistic expectations when rasterizing small text.

Can anyone help me connect my Macbook Air to a SAMSUNG TV.  When I follow the basic instructions (Thunderbolt to HDMI connection) the screen on my computer goes grey and an error message appears inviting me to press any button to restart the Macbook.  When I do this nothing happens.  Only when I disconnect the computer from the TV does the Macbook allow me to login. The TV does not receive any signal from the Macbook even though I know the HDI port works fine.  Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?  Do I need to enable something on the Macbook?

    An update...
I downloaded Apple's (rather large!) list of software updates today, and I was finally able to recognize my iPod again. I did a restore using the iPod updater from 06-2006, and all seemed to work OK. (I'm afraid to try the new one again!)
Then I tried to re-load my music library from iTunes, and got stuck. It froze up after a while and wouldn't go any further.
When I disconnected my iPod from my computer, I find 2 podcasts and nothing else, though iTunes told me it had transferred 600+ songs. Those 2 podcasts do play fine, and the basic iPod software all seems to be intact.
So -- anyone get through this connection problem and have any ideas to share??
