Given up the ghost?

Hi,
I decided to Freecycle my formerly-beloved Indigo G3 350MHz iMac and turned it on yesterday, in order to zero out the hard drive and re-install the OS. When I turned it on, everything worked, but there were a lot of little squares on the screen (like underlying numbers). I had the original 9.04 Software Install and Software Restore. Tried to boot up on the Software Install CD; it did after a while, but got 'error 2' when I tried to erase and reinstall. Tried the Software Restore CD; it wouldn't boot in it.
Tried the Install again. Worked, but halfway through it reported that I had to move a Quicktime Updater to another folder. Couldn't find it. When I tried to reboot on its own it had a question mark. Rebooted from CD, moved the file. Tried to go through the operation again. Didn't work. Now I have a CD in the slot and presumable data still unwiped. Just wondered if there was an easy way of fixing this so that I could zero out the HD. And, just out of curiosity, what's happened to the poor old thing?
Cheers,
Virginia

If it has been sitting disconnected and off for a long time, the first thing I would check is the PRAM battery. If it is dead, odd problems can occur, especially at startup. The battery looks like this.

  • OS 10.5 Dialup (PPP) Given Up The Ghost, Just NOT Working

I assume this is a well know problem by now. Just wanted to make my problem "official".
Installed 10.5 which is generally working well; however dial-up has just gotten worse and worse....
I cannot dial-up at all now and have given up trying all the various work arounds, and just boot up in 10.3.9. (And then suddenly it might just work under 10.5, which is weird).
When I attempt dial-up there are no dial tones, so I'm assuming the software isn't even connecting to the modem. I read that something similiar happened with 10.4. System details follows:
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Model: Power Mac G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
    Memory: 1.12 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.5f1
    Serial Number: SG13900ULJR
    Modem Information:
    Interface Type: Serial
    Modem Model: Spring
    Driver: com.apple.driver.AppleSCCSerial (v1.2.6)
    Hardware Version: 7.0F
    Country:
    SKU Name: Australia
    Modulation: V.90

I had the very same problem ith my 933 Mhz G4. It also uses the same "Spring" internal modem. I got on the phone with Apple tech support, and they had me make a new "location" in the PPP control panel, and i got conected one time after doing that, but then after that I could not reproduce it, and it worked only once.
The only way i was able to get online was tyo use the included "Generic" modem scriopt, and use the "Dialup Service" option for the "Generic" modem. I do not know what the conect speed rate is since the 10.5 panel no longer tells you what your connect rate is like it did in Tiger, but from using it, it fels about as fast as the Apple Internal Modem script did in Tiger.
Leapord had this long delay in getting out, and yet it does not work with a Apple internal modem on a machine that is supposed to be compatable with Leaport??? Seems like someone dropped the ball here big time....
I also got the Blue Scrren of Death, after I took all the precautions to prevent it, including getting rid of all Program Enhancement software, and even all of their Preference files, including insalling back my original Safari program that was unaltered. So I had to do a Archive and Install. i stil had to sue the "Generic" Modem script even after the Archive and Install without saving Network Preferences.

  • Windows XP given up the Ghost

    Hi
I've just tried to Boot into my Win.Xp partition (which has worked for years no problems) and I am
    getting a msg.
\Windows\System32\config\System missing or corrupted please insert original Win.CD and on first page press "r"
    to restore/fix Windows"
Unfortunatley on inserting my Win CD nothing happens and I still get the above msg.
I'm begining to wonder if the Win CD I have is the actual original that I put on in the first place, or I'm doing something wrong?
The Win XP CD I have has the product code so how can I get the old Win XP off it's partition and then try and reinstall
    this CD?
I only use the XP for a flight simulator, not available for Mac. unfortunatley.
    Appreciate any advice

  • FPS1600 Speakers - have they given up the ghost?

I have a set of FPS1600 speakers attached to my PC. They are about 5 years old and have worked well but now seem to have stopped working. When I switch the volume on I get a flicker from the green LED but it doesn't stay on and there is no sound. An even older set of speakers seem to work OK so it doesn't sound like the soundcard. Is there anything simple I can do to test or repair - or are they kapput!?Cheers

  • Wireless given up the ghost

Have had a homehub for three years... ish. Today it has decided to no longer allow any of my laptops to connect wirelessly to it. The hub is still visible with excellent strength. I can connect by cable and have usual broadband access.
I have done the usual limited hardware understanding type things, switch off leave a while then switch on, press the wireless association button.
Any suggestions? Or is this a case of new homehub please! Thanks.

You could do a factory reset of the hub, in case the configuration has been corrupted.
On the original hub, you need to press and hold the Wireless Association button for about 20 seconds. The hub will then reset to default settings and use the wireless key printed on the back.

  • It's given up the ghost?

My iPod nano, a gift for my birthday last year, has recently developed a problem. Even when it's fully charged, it doesn't turn on; I have to restart it. Even then, I can flick through to a song, which doesn't even start, despite the iPod being in Play. It stays at 0:00, and the menu doesn't make its normal clicking noise as I scroll through.
Restarting it over and over is the only way to eventually get it to work.
When I charge it, it freezes instead of syncing/charging.
After I restore it, the problem still occurs. And then when I'm restarting it, I have to choose a language over and over.
I don't have the money to send it in for repairs. Please help!

  • Can anyone help please? I have re formatted my iMac hard drive OSX 10.6.8 and my backup HD has given up the ghost.

I can now no longer access my saved media on iTunes following the re format. Have I lost the lot, purchases and all?
Is there noway I can sync my iPad to the iMac without losing all the media on there as well? Hope someone can help! Thanks.

Here, let me explain the way you use the word "crap" in a sentence like this, especially when I'm asking for help from a total stranger such as yourself. It's rude, obviously I know now not to do something like download something like that to my computer. It's not the difficult to figure out, and obviously I'm suffering the consequences for it now. So are you planning on helping me? Or should I not reply to your next reply if it has the word "crap" in it? I'm sure this whole discussion board was created to be used in a professional way, which is how I would like to keep my responses.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!

I sent in my iPhone 6 for repair. I used restore on the loaner phone I was given, and the contacts, texts, reminders, and Safari pages all showed up. My phone is back, and when I used the restore function again, those items are missing. I do not use iCloud because I have no wifi at home, limited data available for regularly backing up, and I have a 64GB phone and don't wish to pay to upgrade from the 5GB iCloud storage. Am I doing something wrong? It worked so seamlessly on my loaner phone that I am completely stumped as to why it will not restore those items to my original phone again.

The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer or cloud service.  Your contacts should be in whatever program/service you have chosen to sync.
If you have failed to do this, then they are likely gone.

  • Subcontracting with the finished material to be given to the customer

    dear all,
I want to implement a scenario, in which i want do subcontracting. the material shall not be given by me but shall be ordered to another vendor who shall give it to the subcontractor, the subcontractor shall give the finished product to the customer. I would like to do the goods receipt and receive the invoice from the sub contractor.
Please tell the procedure if any one has implemented this scenario.
    regards

    Hi,
    1) For bought out material (to be given by your vendor to Sub-Contractor) - Preferably this PO should be generated from MRP generated PR (requirement coming from the sale order). You can change the delivery address (in Delivery Address tab at Item Details level). In the bought out material PO, you can maintain the vendor number (of your sub-contractor) & put tick at SC Vend. This will change the delivery address to the sub-contractors address. When you post GRN the material stock will be shown as material provided to sub-contractor.
    2) For Sub-Contractor Vendor (material directly to be given to the customer) - The condition you maintained is of the Third Party Supply. The PR for this PO must be generated from the sale order you booked in the system (for the customer to which you want to deliver the material). Maintain the procurement key as F (External procurement) & special procurement key in the material master as 30 (Sub-Contracting) for this material. Using this PR, raise the sub-contracting PO. When you post the GRN for this material the material will be posted to the material supplied to customer & the account hitting at GRN will be COGS (Cost of Goods Sold). The material provided to the sub-contractor (directly from the bought out material vendor) will be consumed at this GRN.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Prashant

What does your own research of 'ORA-00205' indicate?
the text of the error message is pretty self explanatory .. it couldn't find the control file.
The control files are specified by the "control_files"  initialilzation paramter.  When you get this error, the instance has started but was unable to mount the control file.  since the init file (spfile) was processed and the instance started you can easily see what it thinks are the control files.

  • Is  order in which the conditions given in the 'WHERE' clause are imortant

    Hi All,
Is the order in which the conditions are given in the 'WHERE' clause are important for
performance with regard to oracle query plan.
    Regards

    Short answer: no.
Longer answer: Well. probably not. If you are using very old versions of the database or the rule-based optimizer, you can probably find some corner cases where it mattered. If you are using a vaguely recent version of the database with the cost based optimizer, it shouldn't matter-- the optimizer is free to evaluate the conditions in whatever order it would like and it chooses to do so in the order that it expects to be most efficient. That said, as the number of objects and conditions increases, the number of possible permutations the CBO tries to consider increase dramatically to the point that an exhaustive analysis of all possible conditions isn't feasible. In that case, the optimizer will have to make a reasonable effort to explore the set of possible plans rather than doing an exhaustive search-- the order of conditions is likely to matter slightly in the optimizer's choice of which branches to explore and which to prune if there are many conditions with similar (or identical) costs. Now, that being said, it is very unlikely that you could do anything useful with this knowledge that would be able to force the optimizer to do something that you'd want. It's possible to do, of course, it's just not a particularly useful way of influencing the optimizer.

Create a VO that accepts parameters for the date range.
    Base graph on VO
Add the execute with params operation to your page.
