We have an application that runs fine on 10.2.0.4 on most platforms, but a customer has reported an error when running 10.2.0.3 on HP. We have since reproduced the error on 10.2.0.3 on XP but have failed to reproduce it on Solaris or Linux.
The exact error is within a set of procedures, but the simplest reproducible form of the error is pasted in below.Except that you haven't pasted output to show us what the actual error is. Are we supposed to guess?

  • IMac runs slowly in Photoshop

    Hi all,
I have a fairly new iMac (mid-2008 20" model) with a 2.4ghz Intel processor. I am a web designer and use this machine every day for my work. Several months after installing Adobe Creative Suite 3, I noticed that Photoshop was causing the cursor to jump and/or become jerky, as if the video card or processor were not keeping up with what's going on. This tends to happen after the computer's been in use for several hours or days after a restart, and it gets so bad I can't work. I have been following this in Leopard's Activity Monitor, and I noticed that Photoshop (being memory- and processor- hungry) taxes the processor more heavily than many other programs, which I expected. The strange thing, though, is that over time the Activity Monitor shows the "System" as taking up more and more processor capacity. I.E. when I first start up, the system is using 0-20% of the processor, the rest being available for the user; but after awhile, the system is requiring 50-90% of processor capacity, the result being that as soon as I switch into Photoshop from another program, the system is immediately overtaxed and starts moving very slowly (especially the cursor, as I said).
Now, here's the really strange part. As I said, this began happening a few months after I first installed Adobe CS3. I re-installed the software at Adobe's recommendation, and it was fine for another few months, but it began happening a few days ago, which is exactly the same time I shared a jump drive with a friend's worm-infected Windows XP machine. I know Macs don't get Windows worms, but is it possible that this thing has lodged itself on my system somehow and is causing it to run generally more slowly?
I appreciate any help you can give,
    Nathan

    Right ... I'm actually
    i lying

Whatever, Castaneda. You've never mentioned using it that I recall and I'm fairly certain you haven't bought it - you're obviously not running it on your ancient G4. Maybe cursory glances with your wife's Macbook? (which you also hate as I recall) .... feel free to enlighten me about your vast Leopard experience. What
    b specifically
    don't you like about it?
    > Leopard is arguably and easily the worst OS ever released by Apple.
    No. It's not.

    > ...the lack of stability is with InDesign is stopping me plus the fact that Epson is not updating the 2200 drivers.
I can't speak for stability with InDesign because I don't use it much but everything else I use is (and has been) rock solid. And the NON-updated Epson 2200 driver works just fine with Leopard - as well as it did in 10.4 anyway.
I totally agree that there's no
    i highly compelling
reason to upgrade to Leopard, but the little things do add up. I love the ability to view content in the Finder - movies, images, PDFs, etc., without the need to open an app. Spotlight works fantastically - huge improvement over the version in 10.4. Networking has been much improved, Mail is much better, and on and on .... as I said, there's no killer feature but the combined overall improvements make the upgrade worthwhile.
FWIW - I use both 10.4 and 10.5 on a daily basis - 10.4 on a G5 Quad at work, and 10.5 on my Mac Pro at home. I prefer 10.5.

    > Just a sample of Leopard's history if you haven't been following it:
C'mon, that proves nothing. You could find similar threads about every OS released in addition to every version of Photoshop released. There will always be problems that may or may not be related to the software - and people will post about them.
The only real issue I recall with PSCS3/10.5 was the text input glitch that was rectified with 10.5.2. I've been using 10.5 full-time since then and haven't suffered
    b ANY
    of the "trauma" you mentioned.
    > ... so Apple is apparently abandoning it and bringing us a whitewashed version which is to be called Snow Leopard.
If only other developers would follow suit. Imagine if Adobe would concentrate on actual performance improvements, rather than worthless bells and whistles (adjustment layer panel, anyone?), that cater to the newbie because the bean counters know new features and dumbing down the app will move more product. There are improvements in CS4 that make it worthwhile of course, but it's obvious that some stuff is only there for a perceived sales increase.
Only Apple has the guts to pull this off and I say good for them.

  • Archive log missing on standby: FAL[client]: Failed to request gap sequence

My current environment is Oracle 10.2.0.4 with ASM 10.2.0.4 on a 2 node RAC in production and a standby that is the same setup. I'm also running on Oracle Linux 5. Almost daily now an archivelog doesnt make it to the standby and oracle doesnt seem to resolve the gap sequence from the primary. If I stop and restart recovery it gets the logfile and continues recovery just fine. I have checked my fal_client and fal_server settings and they look good. The logs after this error do continue to get written to the standby but the standby wont continue recovery until I stop and restart recovery and it fetches this missing log.
The only thing I know thats happening is that the firewall people are disconnecting any connections that are inactive for 60 minutes and recently did an upgrade that they are claiming didnt change anything:)  I dont know if this is causing this problem or not. Any thoughts on what might be happening?

It's the network that's messing up; unlikely due to firewall timeout as it waits for 60 minutes and you are switching every 15 minutes. There may be some other network glitch that needs rectified.
In any case - arch file missing/ corrupt / halfway through - FAL setting should have refetched the problematic archive log automatically.
As many had suggested already, the best way to resolve RFS issues I believe is to use real-time apply by configuring standby redo logs. It's very easy to configure it and you can opt for real-time apply even in max-performance mode that you are using right now.
Even though you are maintaining (I guess) 1-1 between primary & standby instances, you can provide both primary instances in fal_server (like fal_server=string1,string2). See if that helps.
lastly, check if you are having simiar issue at other times as well that might be getting rectified automatically as expected.

  • Glitch with iTunes Volume Adjustment.

I'm having this tiny glitch with the volume adjustment feature in iTunes. I have certain songs that are too soft, so I turned the volume adjustment on those songs to 100%. I sync those songs to my iPhone 3GS running 5.0.1. However, after those songs finish playing, the next song that plays will also be adjusted to 100%, even when I didn't make it that way. Only way to rectify this is to choose another song from my music list on my iPhone, making the volume back to normal.
It's a minor annoyance, but one nonetheless. I have my playlist on shuffle, and everytime I hear a song which I know I adjusted to 100%, I know I have to choose another song from my playlist because the next song that comes after that will be insanely loud.
If anyone can provide me with a solution, it is greatly appreciated.

Never mind, resyncing seems to have solved the problem.

  • When will Apple fix the "Show my caller ID" glitch that effects service reception? IOS7 has done nothing if not made it worse

I have downloaded IOS7 specifically to try and solve this annoying glitch that disables the "Show my caller ID" and effects my service reception, I know it effects it as when I have no service I can guarantee that the "show my caller ID" selection is disabled, when I turn it on miraculously I have service once again.
Such a stupid little problem that surely is easily rectified.
    When will Apple fix this????

Thanks for that but unfortunately been there, got the T-shirt, they replaced the phone with a new one, and still happens. I believe from what I have read, it's a software glitch that quite a few people have had problems with.

  • Mail Composing Message Window Glitch

So, the new Full Screen view in Mail is pretty but it's got some problems.
As others here have already noted, it's a major problem that when writing a new email or a reply, it becomes impossible to switch back to the main Mail window in order to copy text, check a detail or whatever. One's only options are to Send or Cancel. Apple, this needs to be fixed.
The problem is exarcebated by another weird glitch. Try this:
    1. In Mail, enter Full Screen mode.
    2. Create a new email
    3. Toggle out of Full Screen mode
    4. Toggle back into Full Screen mode
Suddenly, the new email window is orphaned in the non-full-screen world as though it is in a different "space" to the Inbox, which has gone into Full Screen mode without it. And there doesn't seem to be any way to reunite the two in Full Screen mode. It makes this whole interface "advance" look like a very pretty thing to sell but an absolutely useless thing to use. It would be a great pity if this weren't rectified quickly.
A suggestion to the UI team of Mail. The Tabs used in Safari would be a very simple and relatable way to have different windows in Mail's Full Screen mode without bastardising the new look.

    Hello
+1 for the tab idea !

  • Glitch with Shiki Colors

I've recently upgraded to Arch64. I have a fresh system with everything up to date.
I've bumped into a glitch with Shiki Colors theme (from gnome-look.org), which uses the SVN version of Murrine engine. The glitch is as follows:
Notice the white space above the X-Chat tray icon. This glitch is "contagious" and moves over other elements over time. At first I thought it was a buggy Murrine SVN checkout, so I checked out the version I used with Arch32 that had no glitches (rev. 136), but after reload it was the same. Does anyone have a clue where to go with this? Other (non-murrine) themes work like they should, it's just this one. It works fine on my 32-bit Arch.

After you have loaded the qtcurve config and the color scheme in kde's systemsettings, start qtconfig and use qtcurve as a theme.

Ok, I downloaded that file, but I don't know where to put in.
I saw a package called qtcurve-kde4, but it requires about 128MB of other stuff...
sadly there is no other way... qtconfig does not have a qt-only gui yet

  • Momentary Pauses and Graphical Glitches

I'm having the following issues with my mac pro that I use at work. I also have the same specification machine at home without the problem.
1.) During a cold boot (after being off over night) two of the screens become absolutely garbled. Both of the LCD's are connected to an NVidia 7300GT thats plugged into the x16 PCI Express port. I also have another 7300GT that drives an additional monitor that doesn't have any issues. This happens when I boot to OS/X, and when I boot to Windows XP. However, on XP it doesn't happen till I login.
2.) When the machine is warm everything seems okay most of the time. Under OS/X it will occasionally hang where nothing does anything, but then after a second or two everything will be fine. There are little graphics hickups occasionally that go away if I move a window over them. Under XP every great once in a while the screen will become garbled and it will lock up. No blue screen or any error messages. I don't believe its ever the screen connected to the video card in the X8 slot.
These are the steps that I've taken to rectify the problem, but they've all failed.
A.) I did the hardware diagnostics and it reported everything as peachy. I ran both the quick test, and the extended test. It DID however seem rather unresponsive during sections of the testing, but that might be normal.
B.) I reset the PRAM/NVRAM. FYI - it only beeped once and rebooted.
C.) I pulled out the Video card on the X16 lane, and replaced it with the one that was on a X8 pci express lane.
D.) I used the video card from step C on the PCI Express X8 lane, and didn't have a video card in the X16 lane. I don't remember if this test worked because I soon had issues booting it. Apparently it didn't like this configuration.
E.) I removed a hard drive that I put in recently (couple months ago). I can't remember having any of the issues before I put it in. The hard drive seemed fine though. No errors, clicking or any strangeness.
F.) I reinstalled OS/X using a brand new disk, and I also installed Vista on it. Vista showed no signs of issues, and the brand new install of OS/X 10.5.6 still had the occasionally pausing. I haven't tried a cold boot with Vista yet. I imagine the graphics will become garbled. I also haven't used Vista enough to experience the every once in awhile (1 or 2 times a day) garbled screen lockup that I had with XP. I have used Vista enough to know it doesn't pause like OS/X does on the machine. I know OS/X doesn't pause like that normally.
G.) I reconfigured the PCI express lanes so that three of them are X8. I haven't tested the cold boot, but OS/X still hangs occasionally. I haven't been able to determine any pattern to the hanging.
H.) There is no indication in the console of whats making OS/X momentarily freeze
I just want to see if there is anything left to do before I start swapping parts with my Mac Pro at home. There really is only the memory (maybe the cards the memory is on as well), mother board and the power supply. My bet at this point is the logic board.

Update - Despite my feelings that it wouldn't work I decided to try the Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT, and to my surprise it worked.
It solved the issue of momentary pauses within OS/X 10.5.6
It solved the problem I had where 10.5.7 wasn't working at all (it was nightmarishly slow)
It solved the occasional graphical glitches within XP
It solved the cold boot graphics/system freezes I was having within OS/X, and XP
It solved Vista's issue with the graphics driver crashing, and reloading a few times a day.(I never turned it off once vista was getting me by).
I find it really bizarre considering that I have two 7300 GT's and I tried both of them individually in the system with no luck.
I haven't tried putting one of them back in combination with the 8800, but that's my next step. I do want support for 3 monitors.
If that fails I'll try the questionable 7300GTs in my home mac pro. I have a 7300GT in it, and it's still working fine.
If the questionable ones fail than I'll feel a lot better. I don't care about a video card, but I do care that my mac pro is working without issue.
The only surprise in this is how well Vista works with crappy hardware. I mean it just kept running right throw the glitches. It would tell me about it, and where it occurred, and after a reloading the graphics driver it kept on going.

  • Hard drive glitches after battery replacement... normal?

Hello, I have a 4Gen 20gig ipod with click wheel and I just replaced the battery myself last night.
I then plugged it into my computer to sync and it was recognized by windows, but not by iTunes, the hard drive would whir, then click and then try again, then stop. I figured it was just that the battery wasn't charged enough yet, so I let it charge overnight.
In the morning it synced fine. I was then playing it in the car, and some songs would appear, then the hard drive would whir, click a couple of times, then skip on to the next one. After a couple songs it started playing them normal. After skipping a few and the hard drive spun to load more music into the temporary memory, it would whir, click and then skip the song, then whir click and skip that one too... and it kept doing it. Then I reset it, and it kept showing the apple symbol, then the Exclamation and folder icon, then tried restarting again. After trying to reset itself 4 or 5 times, it finally succeeded.
I read a few threads on here, gave the ipod a gentle nudge on the right hand corner a few times, and now its playing and I haven't had any symptoms yet for about an hour.
Is this normal for a hard drive on an iPod to glitch after a battery replacement? I had no such problems when I had the other battery in it, so it's hard to believe that the hard drive is going bad exactly at the same time I changed batteries. It is the right battery for the right iPod, anyone else experience this or have any words of wisdom or comfort?

  • ATI X1900 exhibits random display glitches on a Mac Pro

My ATI card has been displaying bizarre and random glitches on my Mac Pro. I am running a dual screen setup: a brand new Samsung SyncMaster 21" lcd and an ancient 15" Apple Studio Display.
On the Samsung, the most common problem I get is what looks like video jitter (the entire image shakes to the right very quickly at random intervals) every couple of seconds. When the problem gets really bad, I start to notice thin horizontal red lines flickering at random places across the entire screen. Both happen while using the computer and during the boot/reboot process... on the old Apple screen, the problem is less noticeable, usually it's just a very quick flash on the screen that can happen every 15 minutes or so. Sometimes a restart clears up the problem but it doesn't always work. I have also tested my machine with a 17" Formac LCD and it displays the red lines as well.
Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a consistent pattern of why this is happening... sometimes it starts only after several hours of use, other times it will start after waking from sleep. Zapping PRAM and resetting the PMU doesn't seem to have any effect.I have put the stock nVidia card in the machine and all the problems go away. This card was actually replaced by Apple last week and things were fine for a few hours but then the problems returned and has gotten worse since then.
Does this sound like the video card is still defective, or could it possibly be the Mac Pro itself?

Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I would get back into contact with AppleCare and see what they can do. It might well be a driver issue so if you have a drive available, try installing a clean copy of Max OS X onto it, update it to Mac OS X 10.4.8 and see it if makes a difference.

I waited till it was fully down loaded and I restarted my labtop twice to see if the was the cause. It was not and and I getting up set I paid $13 for a HD movie that isn't even a movie; someone please help!
