Gnome & cde problems

CDE:
I have a Intel box running Solaoris 8 (6/01), setup with PPP to the Internet
& ODS
I've been investigating why it can't see other clients on the LAN &, why lo0
does't appear in /dev
, yet i can assign a ip (C'est Bizzare), hence i would like to use "ndd" to
set the change the link speed
So...thinking there may be a problem with my setup, things start 2 go wrong
upon a reboot of
"touch /reconfure"
CDE becomes very very slow, & unusable in mult-user mode ~ ok in safe mode\
single-user.
It seems that a process is taking a memory leak, however there are a lot of
kernal messages\geunix
messages ~ rather information rather than errors
After removiing & re-installing the key 4 CDE packages (SUNWdt*) nothing's
changed ; i even
backed up /usr/dt/app-config & /usr/dt/config
my hostname is allways after localhost & loghost to 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts
i've disbaled snmp
any suggestions before i rebuild ?
Mainly, what coomads to use to determine how much memory is taken by a
process would be a good start
or, how to get back to the defaults of CDE deamons if that's a cause
..or really how to investigate this prblem effectively
Remove CDE & Installed GNOME 1.4 from Solaris Companion
.trying to start it from
/opt/sfw/gnome/bin/gnome-wm gives....
"No Window Manager can be found"
...yet Enlightement is installed, are is it referring to Xterm, which does't apear to be.....where is the config file for me to point gnome to the correct paths ?
Suddenley Device Config Assist is automatically starting,
...does anyone know how to disable it ?
THANKS IN ADVANCE
S.

That compiler warning is probably benign (harmless).  The function appears to change the working directory and then return a void pointer.  The pointer is not used because, apparently, in this case it is not needed.

  • [Solved] gnome install problem

Fresh install of Arch and I'm trying to get gnome installed, I've done it before without a problem but today when I try to install gnome "pacman -S gnome" it says "error: target not found: gnome" I have the [extra] repo enabled so I'm not sure what the problem is.

    Do:
    pacman repository syncronization
    sudo pacman -Syu
    Then:
    Gnome Wiki
    sudo pacman -S gnome

  • Gnome-terminal problems

Hi there, after upgrade to gnome-terminal 3.12.1-1,I found some errors appears :
First, when I want to open a new terminal use my custom shortcuts Ctrl+Alt+T,sometimes it will make the whole screen freeze, and I have to switch to another TTY to kill it.Then I check my system log, there are many warnings like:
    org.gnome.Terminal[958]: (gnome-terminal-server:7346): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: g_object_weak_unref: couldn't find weak ref 0x7faec0b2c420(0x14e1550)
Is there something wrong ?I also try to compile it by myself , but it gives a warning:
    server.c: In function ‘main’:
server.c:113:5: warning: ignoring return value of ‘chdir’, declared with attribute warn_unused_result [-Wunused-result]
         (void) chdir ("/");

are all the problems caused by this ?How could I handle this, can anyone fix that? Thanks for your works.Sorry for my poor English.

  • [Solved]Gnome settings problem

    Hi all.
I have some strange problems with Gnome 3.2, it is hard to explain but these screenshots should:
    http://bildr.no/image/1012613.jpeg
    http://bildr.no/image/1012614.jpeg
In the first picture you can see that something that is selected by default is pink, this happens all over Gnome. In the second one you can see that in nautilus when I want to select with the mouse it creates a white block so you can't see behind. I know it is a settings problem because the same doesn't happen on a new account, but the problem is that I have tried to delete .gnome2/ .gconf and .config but once I start to customize again the problem reappers. So I was wondering if there is anything else that I can try to delete without deleting the whole account or if there is some settings that I could to to remove this problem.
    Thanks in advanced

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3 problem when typing to find application

    Hi everybody,
Last night i tried to open an application in GNOME 3 (the last version available), then i pressed the windows key (activities) and tried to type the name of the app. When i typed the second character (i think), the UI restarted, and once i tried it again, it crashed. I tried to disable/uninstall the extensions i currently have in GNOME , but it didn't fix the problem.
Is there a problem with some updates with GNOME?
    Thank you for your help.

  • CDE problem!

    Hi
I am not able to do desktop login whereas I could do console login. The desktop login screen is looking different from the regular one, in which one of the session option is 'failsafe session', which I have not seen in the regular login screen.
I tried running the /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -e , it throws out information saying 'skipping unknown field in conf file'.
Is this the cause for the problem or ..
Do anyone have solution for this problem?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks I got it fixed. The VirGE GX is working for OpenWindows but not for CDE. Any ideas?

  • Gnome 3.4 gnome-keyring problem

    hey,
    just upgraded to gnome 3.4.
First thanks for the hard work over the weekend besides your jobs and private life :-) to bring gnome 3.4.1 to extra.
i had a problem after log in, that the desktop didn`t come up.
Found a solution with downgrading gnome-keyring to the version 3.2.2.
In .xsession-errors there are two lines, which could explain the behaviour:
/usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon: error while loading shared libraries: libgck-1.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libgcr-3.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Any ideas to get theses libraries?
Or are there old dependencies, that were not completely deleted?
    regards

I had a problem with evolution and network manager with the gnome-keyring 3.4.1 update. A downgrade to 3.2.2-3 worked, but I have since re-installed (pacman -S) gnome-keyring followed by gcr. That works. Fyi, resintalling gcr then gnome-keyring did not work for me .

  • Gnome numlockx problem [SOLVED]

After the installation of the latest release 2009.02 of Arch along with Gnome DE, the numlockx package seems not to work. More precisely, when I restart X and enter my credentials, the numlock's led remains off. Any suggestions?
Last edited by gpan (2009-04-08 07:04:05)

Ok ok... all along I thought it was working here.
    There is this GConf key
    /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/host-<hostname>/0/numlock_on
that gnome-settings-daemon uses to set the numlock state between sessions if the "remember_numlock_state" key is checked.
It is supposed to store the current state of the numlock key.  Setting this to true/false will toggle the numlock key state, and vice versa... meaning, pressing the actual numlock key will alter this GConf key as well.  Right now, the latter does not work, because of the current xkb not alerting gnome-settings-daemon when the numlock key is pressed.
Upgrading to xorg-1.6.0-1 in testing fixed the problem here.

  • Using system configuration gui tools in Gnome - Permission problems.

I have been using Arch for a couple of months now, on both my laptop and desktop, I have the same problems on both of them. I have searched all through these forums, and still have no enlightenment on my problem.
I am using Gnome 2.26.3, and have not yet been able to use any of the system configuration tools that are under menu - System - Administration.
e.g the time and date, network or printer tools.
First try i get the "you are not allowed to access the system configuration" So I then run the required tool as root, using both GKSU and also from the command line as root.
In this case the Gui fires up but all options are greyed out except the "Unlock" tab, I click on this and nothing happens..everything is still greyed out.
Any help to solves this would be most appreciated.

This Bug is fairly new, the small images on the right side does not appear that small, with the version before of mutter.
    I reported that:
    https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=724959
VGA with scale factor: 1.0 HDMI with scale factor: 1.0
VGA with scale factor: 1.0 HDMI with scale factor: 1.0
VGA with scale factor: 1.0 HDMI with scale factor: 1.0
So the DPI from XServer seems not be the values which gnome uses to determine the screen size.
Booting with VGA switching to HDMI after login fix the problem, but this cant be the right solution

  • Transparent gnome terminal problem

    Hi there all archies!
I have a problem with transparency in gnome terminal. When using it without transparency it runs smoothly, but when i turn on the transparency all gets slow and i cant really use it.
I have tried both before and after nvidia-drivers installer but without any success. My graphic card is an nvidia 2 gts, and i am running gnome without kdelibs/qt installed.

yes, dri indeed! de-comenting it in XFree86Config did the trick. also, as a result everything looks nicer, and it appears to have fixed another minor bug i encoutered in gnome-term, which was while i scrolled up the text got all corupted.  thanks dude. what is dri anyway?
uh, maybe i should start a new thread but i'll ask here anyway. mozilla runs fine as root but when i attempt to run it as any other user it does nothing. i mean i enter the command mozilla in a terminal and it doesn't do anything, no processes are started, nothing. it takes the command and promptly return s the next bash line without any comments or fatal error in melting process x0876w or whatever. i re-installed it with pacman (-R and again -Sy), no luck. any ideas?
    thanks again

  • Gnome-Art problem 2

    Hi!,
I have the following problem with gnome-art package.

Hmm, 300 mails per month (September) is a lot.
I guess I'll just follow the forum discussions and try once in a while.
Maybe it's because we are spoiled with other fast updates (like FF the day it is released) that I start to expect fast updates for all packages.
if you want testing you need to read those mails.. stuff in testing might break with your hardware/software configuration. you have to be ready for it.
but yes, if you are not willing to fix your setup from time to time. you shouldnt enable it.
....sometimes i wonder how many .pacnew files people have in their system.

  • Gnome automounting problem...

    Hi,
I installed Arch few days ago and I still have few issues. Well they are not too  serious but they are really annoying. Few info about my system. It's Dell Inspiron E1505. I have installed stock kernel 2.6.18-7, dbus (0.62-3), hal (0.5.8.1-1), pmount (0.9.13-1), gnome-volume-manager (1.5.15-4), udev 101-1.
My biggest problem is automounting of removable devices. I use gnome and I am used to that gnome volume manager mounts my cds, dvds and usb sticks. Well system recognised them, but I have to click on them to mount. I searched forums to find an answer and it seems that some have the same problem, but I found no clear answer.
The user is already member of storage group and this are my start up services:
    DAEMONS=(@acpid @915resolution @syslog-ng @hal @dbus @alsa @network @powernowd)
Does anyone know what I should do to solve this problem?

Well, for one gnome-volume-manger shouldn't ever mount anything O.o or atleaste I've never heard anything about this. HAL is what automounts devices so they work for me . Btw what is with the "@" symbol before you daemons? That doesn't need to be there, try removing them and trying again. I just have DAEMONS=(hal), ect.

  • Gnome launcher problem

On my gnome panel, I have a launcher icon which is set up to launch a folder.  When I click on the folder icon, it used to open up the folder in Nautilus.
Now when I click the launcher icon, it tries to open it up in Totem - and of course, it fails.
How do I change the behavior of the gnome launcher?
    Thanks for any help.

this probably isnt a problem wth the launcher, its a problem with default folder opening
in nautilus, right click a folder, properties, open with and check that open folder or nautilus is selected
You may find it is currently set as totem
    or if this doesnt work
go into launcher properties and for the command set it as nautilus /path/to/folder/
