Going from editing SD video to HD video

Hi,
I have a powerbook G4 17" (1.67 GHz) that I've been using for about 4-5 years for editing SD video footage (from a Canon GL2 3CCD and a lipstick cam style SD VIO POV.1). I will also soon be shooting with a new HD lipstick cam (Sony HXR-MC1).
I now want to buy a new macbook pro 17 ("2.66GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB, 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm).
I have been using Final Cut Pro v 5, but I will be upgrading to Final Cut Studio v 3. I'm working on starting a small business and I will be using FCS to create DVDs. One of the more intensive things I will be doing is using the stabilization filter in FCP to smoothen shaky footage.
Will I be able to edit HD video on a new macbook pro using FCS, just like I edit SD footage on my powerbook G4 using FCP? Or will I need some other additional hardware for the macbook pro? Any tips for editing HD video footage would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

You're correct that your TV and the STB are renegotiating the HDMI signal.  To avoid this, I set the STB for the SD Override to "off" so the STB always outputs 1080i (or 720p if you prefer).  This way, even when you view an SD 480i channel, it is sent to the TV as a 1080i (or 720p) signal and no re-negotiation is required.  The setting is set under Menu>Settings>Video Setting>SD Override.   Note that occasionally this setting reverts back to 480i (I think it's a bug) but setting it back to off works for me.

  • Going from 30GB to 80GB

Folks, I'm thinking of going from my 30GB Video to one of the new 80GB. Not worried about the cost, but more concerned about how easy and upgrade would be ... is it as simply as plugging the new one into the computer and having my tunes library sent to the new device? Thanks in advance for any/all advice!

Follow the instructions in this article if you want to erase everything from the iPod; plugging the iPod into a new computer and then changing the computer it is linked to will erase music, photos, and videos from it, but won't affect other content, such as notes and data.

  • HT5958 We are 4 min in to editing a video on final cut pro.  now my computer is freezing up.  I have heard that this is a glitch from downloading. (beyond frustrated)  is this from working from 2 external hard drives?  PLEASE HELP! =)

    PLEASE HELP. =)
we are about 4 minutes into editing a video for the first time on final cut pro x 10.1.  everything was going very smoothly, but then it started freezing up.  I had to do a hard reset and took it into the computer store that actually installed final cut for us.  they suggested that our mac actually is not capable of keeping up with final cut. (I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE!!)  We work on an IMAC 2.66 ghz intel core 2 duo.  8 gb 1067 mhz ddr3. software os x 10.9.1 (hopefully that info will help for your suggestions)  Because we have soooooooooooo many hours of high def video, we are working off of two external hard drives.... is this a problem?? or do we really need to upgrade our computer?????

Like Russ said, check Activity Monitor and see what else is running and turn off any Applications that aren't needed.
Turn off wi-fi or disconnect the wire that goes to the Internet
Turn off Background Rendering (if you see an orange line on the top of the time line that moves along and gets shorter while you're not doing anything that is a good sign that Background Rendering is running.
I haven't used 10.1 yest but on the previous version there was a small circle approximately in the middle of the screen, about 1/2-inch or 1 cm in diameter, and it would have a number inside. The number is the percent complete of what is hapening. When it is Rendering the percentage will be shown.
Basically, you probably need to free up resources.
For what it is worth, my previous Mac Pro was a 1,1 2.66 machine, also with 8GB of, I think, 667 memory, and it would process FCPX 10.0.9 okay. It did have an upgraded video card, though.

  • Can I burn a DVD with both 4:3 and 16:9 from a HD video edited in FCP

I created a video in FCP from a HD video camera. I usally burn a wide screen DVD, but this time I want to burn a 4:3 dv DVD. Can this be done? And if it can how would I do it? Please help.

    Hi:
In DVDSP you can set 16:9 tracks/menus to display letterboxed in 4:3 TVs and full screen in 16:9 ones. In the item properties you must set as Display Mode: 16:9 letterbox (no Pan&Scan).
No need to re-edit the source in a 4:3 timeline.
    Hope that helps !

    Thanks Tgara.
Its funny. So far the responses have been 50/50 on this question. I even asked two seperate Apple Store employees here in NYC, and got two different answers! One said yes, the other no.
    Argh!
I know from watching the keynote speech about icloud and iOS 5 that you will be able to cut the cord between the pc and ios devices like the ipad. No more need to sync them via a cord. So will that mean i would then be able to load video directly to the ipad via tha cam kit connector from my ipod? Also i wonder if/when Apple will allow HD video from on Apple devices like a canon dslr to be able to transfer to the ipad via the cam kit connector AND be able to EDIT that footage in imovie for the ipad. Speaking of imovie for the ipad...i hope it gets an update soon as well.
Anyway....with the macbook airs getting updated next week with thunderbolt and new sandy bridge chips....i may just get one of them instead of the ipad 2 for editing video on the road. Still...i prefer surfing the web experience on the ipad. Grrrrrrr. **** youuuuuuu Apple!!! Lol

I have tried to edit a single movie and in no time I was getting messages that my startup disk is full.

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a computer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/ Final Cut user, both apps have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
    Also, Find Any File
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

Hi Dan - I'm not sure I know what you mean by 'kick in Expose', can you please explain?
It's a weird one as it doesn't happen all the time.  Could it have anything to do with running Apple TV and the MacBook 'thinking' there is another display (extended desktop) and playing the video there?

Will I have the ability to continue to edit my video from a Canon MV430i camcorder if I update the operating system on my iMac to OS10:5 Leopard?

No you won't, iMovie 6 will continue to work, and having two or more versions of iMovie should not be a problem.

  • Is there a way to create and edit a video in portrait mode / 9:16 in Premiere Elements 12 or 13. Playback on an iPhone in portrait position.

I'm editing iPhone app video for posting as the first screen in the Apple app store. Required size for the video is 750:1334, 9:16. I there a way to setup the initial video in portrait mode? Many posts for how to rotate a specific clip, but I need the whole video in portrait position. How to accomplish this? I'm using Windows 7 and Premiere Elements 12 and now 13.

    LaurieFrick
Thanks for giving this portrait Edit area monitor shape a look.
I have Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 8.1 64 bit and have done the work using Premiere Elements 12/12.1 on Windows 7 64 bit.
Here is a step by step
Find the DSLR [email protected] file
    Local Disk C\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Settings\SequencePresets\NTSC\DSLR\1080p\
And, in that 1080p Folder is the DSLR 1080p30@ 29.97.sqpreset file that you seek.
    1. Copy the
    DSLR 1080p30@ 29.9.sqpreset fileI
and paste it to the computer desktop in a newly created folder named 1920p.
    2. Open the 1920p Folder and edit the ..sqpreset file in Notepad.
To do that right click the .sqpreset, and, from the pop up, select Open With and then Notepad.
    3. In the Notepad document, you are going to edit in only 2 places for now, switching 1920 and 1080 to 1080 and 1920 at the top and bottom
    sections of the Notepad document.
Then go specifically File Menu/Save of the Notepad document and hit Save.
    4. At this point, you have the edited.sqpreset file in the 1920p Folder on the computer desktop.
(Change the name of the edited .sqpreset file so that it = DSLR [email protected])
Move the 1920p Folder from there to add it to the 1080p Folder, the location where you found the original .sqpreset file that you edited.
    Close out of there.
    5. Back in the Premiere Elements 12/12.1, manually set the project preset to the new project preset
    6. When you import your 1080 x 1920 9:16 video file into the project and drag it into the Timeline, you should see
Note that there is no orange line over that Timeline content, indicating that you are seeing
the best possible preview of the image.
    7. As I wrote before,
But, here is the hang up. If I render the Timeline content to get the best possible preview at the Edit level, the video in the Edit area monitor
squeezes in resulting in black borders to the left and right of the video image on screen.
But, otherwise I found I had no problems editing or exporting, just had to keep away from Timeline rendering for previewing after an edit. Need to find the missing ingredient for 100%.
I will be writing this up in my blog in a more organized fashion including how I got the project preset description in Change Settings to agree with the changes. Probably I will do that in the morning.

  • Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto

Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto.
Hi I've done a lot of searches on how to do this but no answers found.
Imovie is beginning to become really slow because of the large number of video's. It takes 3 minutes to startup. Editing is sometimes slow lot's of spinning beach balls e.t.c.
I would like to only import the video I want to edit and hopefully get a quicker Imovie in the process.
My Iphoto library is about 95 Gbyte in size.
My mac has 4 gb ram and I use the internal disk.
Any other ways to work with Imovie/Iphoto are also welcome.
    regards

I won't get iMovie 9 till Tuesday, but based on what you said I may need to take some precautions. One reason I didn't like iMovie 8 is because it automatically imported everything in iPhoto library. What I'm going to do is create a new iPhoto library before importing the photos/videos from the camera. Or if you already have it in your main iPhoto library copy only the photos you'll use in your iMovie 9 project to the new library. Then start iPhoto while pressing the option key which will allow you to select the new iPhoto library you have created. Then I suppose that when you start iMovie 9 it will automatically import only the photos/videos from the new library.

  • Best Quality Export Settings in MPEG Streamclip to Edit HD Video in iMovie

    Hi,
I import video from data DVDs and regular DVDs and edit the videos in iMovie.  In the past, I've always used MPEG Streamclip because it can read the native DVD VOB format.  I then use the "Export to DV" option in MPEG Streamclip which exports a .DV file readable by QuickTime or iMovie.  These are large files, but it is my understanding that this is best quality for editing.
Now I have started to receive HD Videos.  When I use MPEG Streamclip the same way, it reduces the HD video into a windowbox 720x480 video loosing all HD resolution.
I've done some research online and apparently MPEG Streamclip's DV export options are pretty limited and other people have said to use the "Export to MPEG-4" or the "Export to QuickTime" which are more configurable.  Each of these requires a Compression Codec Selection.  Some have said to use H.264, but I've also read that you should not compress with H.264 if you're going to be doing editing.
I do not care about file size, I want maximum quality.  The incoming DVD video is 1280 x 720 (HDTV 720p), what Compression selection do I select in MPEG Streamclip for "Export to MPEG-4" or "Export to QuickTime" to maintain the best quality for editing in iMovie?  I appreciate your help!
    Jerry

Use Apple Intermediate Codec for best quality and best editing performance.
If you have Final Cut Pro installed, you may have additional good options like ProRes 422.

  • How do I remove the black border from around my videos?

I have PE7 on my Dell laptop with Windows 7. I've been editing videos on it probably since January. I just never thought anything of the black border, but recently it's really been bugging me. I tried Googling some answers, but all I found was to switch your camera to 16:9 Widescreen. My JVC Everio GZ-MG555U was already set to that setting. I'm just frustrated & I want to get rid of this border. If anyone knows the answer to this problem, please let me know. I need help!

    makaylaamae
Thanks for staying with the troubleshooting. I will stay with this as long as it takes to get the project to a successful conclusion. Let us work through this step by step.
    1. The readout that you give for your JVC video file is consistent with what those .mod widescreen files have been reading out as, that is,
    720 x 480 with a pixel aspect ratio of 0.9091 (standard 4:3) rather than 720 x 480 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2121 (widescreen 16:9).
    2. Premiere Elements 7. Start a new project with the project preset of NTSC DV Widescreen.
    3. With Get Media/Files and Folders import your video clip into the project and drag it to the Timeline.
    4. Go to Interpret Footage and, in the Interpret Footage dialog, dot the Conform to: and change the Pixel Aspect Ratio to
    D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2).
    5. Right click the Monitor, select Magnification, and make sure that that the setting is "Fit". Now look at the Edit Mode Monitor space. Is the area designated for the video display filled? No black borders? If so, continue. If not, you are going to scale the video to make the fill. It should not take much scaling for this if needed.
    a. Select your video on the Timeline
    b. Open Properties/Motion Panel to reveal Scale. Use the Scale slider to zoom in to fill the monitor space to the minimal degree to achieve that purpose, that is, getting rid of any unfilled space (black borders).
6.Then export that Timeline to a NTSC DV AVI widescreen file, saving it to the computer desktop.
Use Share/Computer/DV AVI with Presets: DV NTSC Widescreen
Check out how your NTSC DV AVI widescreen plays back on Windows Media Player. Nevertheless, continue on....
    7. Go to the YouTube web site and upload your DV NTSC Widescreen there. And, let us know the results.
We can talk about the upload of your Premiere Elements 7 Timeline with its mod widescreen to YouTube from within Premiere Elements 7 Share/Online/YouTube next if necessary. If you have any problems along the way, stop, let us know the details, and we will work out the problem before continuing with the next steps.
    Thanks.

  • How to edit my video in portrait mode?

Hey! I'm editing some video that a friend of mine took, and he of course held the phone in portrait mode
So now I'm editing it in portrait mode, mixed with some other landscape shots. But that's not so much the issue. I need help with scaling the portrait shots correctly, as now the overview window cuts the video in half while the preview window shows it just fine.
    Picture:
So how do I scale the overview window to whats shown in the preview window?
    Thanks for all your help!

I suspect that the issue is that the overview window is showing the *sequence* settings while the preview window is showing the clip settings (which is "side-ways").
I just did a test with a vertical clip.  When I dragged it into an exisiting sequence I got the same result you did.  Premiere did *not* ask if I wanted to confrom the sequence to the clip.  It did not actually "scale" the clip but it did show the same thing you have where only part of the clip is visible.
When I dragged the clip to the "make new sequence from clip" icon.  I got a properly sized sequence and preview window.
Of course that's not going to help you much if you're combining portrait and landscape footage.
I would start by dropping a piece of landscape video in a sequene and conform the sequence so you know it's right for that footage.  Then drop a portrait shot in (doesn't matter which one) and go to "Effects Controls" amd Motion.  Scale the clip down so it fits the window and make a note of the percentage.  Now you've got the formula for all future portrait clips.
To get the bounding box change the "Fit" option to a percentage in the overview window.
    Hope this helps

  • Why when almost completed editing a video on imovie have half the clips developed narrow screen aspect exhibiting grey band top and bottom of each clip?

Why when almost completed editing a video on imovie, have almost half the clips developed narrow aspect - the rest is still widescreen? The faulty clips have developed grey bands top and bottom.

    Tried to duplicate the situation.
Most probably I got it wrong but when adding in
    • a photo in 16x9 then I get a black letterbox-ing
    • an 16x9 video taken from a small compact digital Camera and in wrong frames per seconds (30fps) in a PAL (25fps) project - I get this gray banding too. Strange
May be it has to do with matching different fps in same project - never liked to do that as quality usually suffers and it goes jumpy.
I use JES_Deinterlacer to get all my material into the same standard first - not letting iMovie or iDVD do that conversion as that gives ME BAD RESULT.
Someone with clear knowledge on this - Please feel free to fill in and correct.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Editing raw video/saving individual clips

New to Premier Elements 10. Is there a way to save individual video clips after chopping up my raw video. Or should I be using another program? I simply want to convert a long video into shorter segments for my files and ease of future use. Thanks!

There are several methods for accomplishing this, and Steve's recommendation for SceneAlyzer is a good one, if one wants the longer Source File broken into "scenes."
When creating "sub-clips" * one must consider Handles, as if they edit too tightly, and then use those "sub-clips" in a Project, and apply Transitions, Handles will be necessary. This article goes into Handles in more detail: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/701768?tstart=60
Also, using a CODEC, that does either light compression, or lossless compression, will pay quality dividends, when one goes to edit those "sub-clips." This article goes into more detail, for some lossless CODEC's: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/875797?tstart=0
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    * The term "sub-clips" is used here to denote shortened and edited Clips from a larger "master clip." Note: in Premiere Pro, and some other NLE (Non Linear Editor) programs, there is an official term Sub-Clips, that have a slightly different meaning, and function, within a Project. Similar, but different. Here, I am using the term in a slightly different fashion, hence the " marks, and lack of capitalization.
