Good tutorial book for non-flash developer?

I need to learn flex for our company. I am a .NET developer
although I have used Flex 1.0 before and was doing well with it. I
am by no means a flash developer, so I'm looking for a good
beginner to intermediate book for someone who is looking more at
flex application development rather than design.
I need a book that focuses more on database/XML/webservice
integration and not something that focuses SOLEY on rich GUI's.
Yes, I would like for the book to focus also on design, but not
have that purely be the focus.
What do you all recommend? Thanks!
Ryan

I found the book Adobe Fex 2 Training from the Source VERY
helpful. I read and did everything and am also finding it useful as
a reference. One reason I liked it is that it takes you through an
appliation step by step refining the application over time as you
"discover" more succinct/efficient ways to do things (e.g. making
components and a more reusable design). It takes you through
multiple ways to get at server stuff too. I also highly recommend
reading the Cairngorm articles posted on Adobe's website to help
you get off on the right foot using good design principles for
Flex.
P.S. I am very much a newbie myself and am still climbing the
learning curve.

  • Industry standard for alloting Flash Development time

Does anyone the industry standard for the time it takes for
Flash development in general. In other words, How much developement
time does it take to do one minute of flash animation. For example,
with video and motion graphics, it's one hour of editing time to
accomplish one minute of edited video.
Is there a similiar industry standard for Flash development?
Obviously, there are variations in the how robust the
animations are, how interactive they are, and how complicated the
code is...but I'm really just looking for a general rule of thumb
    for professional Flash developement..
Anyone know?... or know a good place to find this
    info?

I appreciate your willingness to respond but I find it hard
to belive that a standard does not exist. As a multimedia developer
at a high profile corporation, I have been asked for this
    information....and I gurantee that if I have been asked....others
at large companies have been asked also.
can anyone that works in the industry share their own
guidelines based on personal experience? I have my own SWAG for the
amount of time it takes indivdualy for custom animations,
interactivies, and games...but would like to compare that to other
    estimates.
Maybe it's better to ask for a Multimedia developemnt
standard instead of a Flash development standard.

What is a good "free" substitute for Adobe Flash Player? I need this for photos to be developed.

You cannot substitute another app for Flash because it is proprietary technology. Apple is adamant about keeping Flash out of their phones and tablets, hence why you will not find it in the App Store. If you want to be able to use Flash on-the-go, consider purchasing an Android device.
Doesn't matter at this point.  Android 4.0.3 is the last OS he'll have if he wants flash.  Adobe has already stopped development for their mobile flash player.

  • PCUI for non-CRM development

ECC seems to have the same PCUI data structures as CRM, but ECC does not have the IMG hooks into PCUI that CRM does.  Has anyone used PCUI outside of CRM?  Is it a valid development scenario?
    Thanks much!

    Hi Daniel,
You can do development in PCUI for non-CRM applications but there are a few points you must consider before going forward.
    1. You need to have CRM in the system. So, you got to have the PCUI components (even if you don't use any other CRM functionality) in the system. This is because PCUI is still a part of CRM only.
    2. You need to be aware that its not preconfigured and predelivered as in the case of CRM. So, you have to set up all the blueprint tables by yourself and write up all the Model Access classes.
    3. You need to be aware that PC UI structure is quite rigid. You can not play around much with the look and feel. There are certain things you <b>can not</b> do in PC UI.
So, if you decide to go for PCUI anyways, you are always welcome to post you PCUI related queries in this forum. Also check out the weblog by Vijay on the PCUI cook book.
    /people/vijaya.kumar/blog/2005/06/10/people-centric-user-interface-pcui--getting-started
This should come handy to do a pre implementation feasibility analysis and if you decide to go ahead then in every step of your development.

  • Can anyone recommend a good instruction book for intermediate Mac users?

I have been using Mac for 3 years now so am not a total beginner, but still need help in many areas of OS X use. These forums are brilliant and thanks to the willing help from more expert members I have learnt a lot ( thank you), however there are times when just having a book open in front of you is the easiest way to get to grips with something. Can anyone recommend a good user manual for people like me who don't need a real beginners guide but also don't want a mind numbing, in depth, advanced text. I already have Maria Langers Visual Quickstart Guide which is useful but is exactly what it says, a quick start, and David Pogues Missing Manual which I find a little frustrating as he seems to fall short of explaining exactly how to do something after he says it can be done!
I guess what I am really after is a clearly written book that is good for beginners and more advanced users alike, with screen shots to show you what you should be doing.
    Grateful for any suggestions.
macbook white 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512mb ram and 60gig hard drive,

    Hi again,
Many thanks for the feedback and the star!
For troubleshooting, Dr Smoke's Troubleshooting Mac OS X eBook is invaluable. Again, I have the Panther edition. I haven't, yet, felt the need for the Tiger edition with so many of the tips available free via his FAQs.
The only drawback, of course, is that when one is in a fix and possibly unable to boot up, the e-book isn't accessible unless one has a copy on another Mac.
    Have fun,
    Adrian

  • Good troubleshooting book for tiger

hello, has anyone heard of the "x-lab" book by dr smoke? is it pretty good? i read a little and it seemed like it could help. before i get it i wanted to check and see if anyone knows or can recommend other books for troubleshooting and repairs and such for tiger. i have the missing manual book and its good, but it's more like an intro to tiger. i would like to learn how to fix my mac and do troubleshooting and learn more about the os.
    thx

Hi! Dr. Smoke is one of the "masters" and is revered by all one these boards. It's a good book to have around in that time of trouble especially if you don't have another computer that you can use for research on a problem. Also one of the best ways to learn is by reading the posts and especially solved ones. You'll soon pick up on the best "experts" and you'll always find yourself reading anything they post! Tom

  • Cost of goods sold (cogs) for non-shippable items (intangible items)

    Hi Experts,
Can anyone please help me on this issue for shippable item we can check in material transactions--distributions for cogs account and cost of an item. But how can we check the cost and account for non-shippable items (intangible items) with out using the items and item cost form.
    Thanks in advance,
    Christ.

    Hi,
You need to replace the join MSI.SALES_ACCOUNT(+) = GCC.CODE_COMBINATION_ID with msi.cost_of_sales_account(+) = GCC.CODE_COMBINATION_ID to get the COGS account. Currently you are getting sales account not COGS.
    Thanks

  • Good reference book for FinalCut Express

Can someone recommend a book for a beginner in FCE?
    Thanks

I don't agree with that. The book does cover some advanced topics but everything from the basics upwards is covered. For example, "Title" in the index lists page 479: "To generate a basic title screen".
    1. To generate a title screen, do one of the following:
    - From the generator pop-up menu in the lower right of the Viewer window choose Text > Text.
    - On the Browser's Effects tab, choose Text from the Video generator folder (Figure 17.7).
The new Outline Text Generator appears in the Viewer.
2 In the Viewer, click on the Controls tab to access the generator's controls; then specify your text control settings as outlined in the previous section, "Text generator options checklist" (Figure 17.8).
You can specify only one font per text generator.
    3. Click back to the Viewer's Video tab and edit the text clip in your sequence in the Timeline. If you want to superimpose your text over video, choose the Superimpose edit type when you perform your edit (fugure 17.9).
You can edit, filter, and animate text clips as you would any other video element.
Pretty simple and complete. I find it useful to remind me later how to do something once I have learned the technique from doing one of Tom's Lessons in his book.

  • Any good books for learning flash?

I'm trying to learn how to use flash, and there's only so much I can learn on my own. I looked up some books on various websites, but I don't know which would be the "best" to use for someone completely new to the program.

I would recommend anything by David Stiller. He posts a lot on these forums and has a great way of explain the why and how of doing stuff in Flash.
It also depends upon if you are planning on learning code or timeline animation (or both). Chris Georgenes (who also often posts here) is a genius animator and has some good books too.
For animation through code I recommend Keith Peter's "Making Things Move."
There are also great on-line tutorials like at gotoAndLearn.com by the amazing Lee Brimlow.
    That should get you started...

  • Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre is Looking For A Flash Developer.

    Hello Everyone,
I'm Kevin, Project lead for the game modification Stepping
Stones. You can check out our ModDB Profile here:
    http://mods.moddb.com/7326/stepping-stones-pacific-theatre/
. I come here to ask if anyone will be willing to help with some
animations for our soon to be launched site. At the bottom of the
post you can see the WIP layout that one of the team members has
made. Our site will be made with the
    Flipping Book extention, and it
will be similar to a book. If you wish to help us, you should know
Flash and Actionscript well, and e-mail me at [email protected]
    Thanks.
To see our WIP layout, Click here:

    Nice design!
I don't know anything about the
Flipping Book component, but I would suggest checking into
    the
    FlashLoaded
Page Flipper coponent before you buy the other one... just to
make sure you're getting the best deal. I say it becuase I
DO know about Flashloaded's stuff, and it is all amazing!
Hope you get someone good to help on Flashing it out.

  • What is the best Premiere CS6 reference/tutorial book for an experienced editor?

Greetings all. I am a working professional editor here in Los Angeles, doing mostly short-form promos, trailers. and web videos. I have years of experience with both Avid and Final Cut Pro, and switch back and forth between them from job to job.
Lately I've noticed that more and more jobs are popping up that want you to know Premiere, and I'd like to teach myself. When I learned Final Cut I bought an excellent book called, "Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors" by Diana Weynand. Does anyone know if there's something similar for Premiere?
But failing that, a good general reference with advanced tutorials would be good! My preference is to have an actual book (as opposed to videos) so that I can leaf back through it to look something up. In the last few months I taught myself After Effects using the book, "After Effects Apprentice" by Trish and Chris Meyer. That was a great book, and I'd love to find something similar for Premiere.
Do you folks recommend the "Classroom in a Book" item, or is there something else better out there.
        Any advice welcome!
