GPU not in use

Hi so I've been trying to get Arch working on my Y510p machine. It has 2 GPUs but since SLI isn't really a thing on linux I can only use 1 GPU.
I came here from Debian, and there the GPU worked out of the box, installed the drivers and boom epic performance. However on Arch this is not the case. I've followed the guide on how to install Nvidia drivers correctly, and my machine seems to recognize that they exist, but they're not being used.
I've tried bumblebee, but whenever I used optirun my screen would turn into a light spectrum, causing it to be inoperatable. Anyway so I've uninstalled Bumblebee again and I'm currently using the following drivers:
[clonix@Clonix ~]$ pacman -Qs nvidia
local/lib32-nvidia-utils 346.59-1
NVIDIA drivers utilities (32-bit)
local/libcl 1.1-4
OpenCL library and ICD loader from NVIDIA
local/nvidia 346.59-1
NVIDIA drivers for linux
local/nvidia-utils 346.59-1
NVIDIA drivers utilities
And this is the output of lspci | grep -i --color 'vga':
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 750M] (rev a1)
I tried lspci | grep -i --color 'vga|3d|2d' but it gave no output. Furthermore, I've tried running a few applications that need 3d rendering in order to run, and I was presented with a big fat error message telling me:
No card selector available for card vendor 0000 (using GL_RENDERER "Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.6, 256 bits)").
and a popup box saying no GPU didn't support 3d rendering.
Bottomline, it's not working and I'd appreciate any help given since I cannot find a solution myself.
Regards, Paludan

dragonn wrote:You need to get bumblebee working because this is the only way to get dGPU working since the Nvidia GPU-s are not physical connected to the screen, so you need to passthrough the output of nvidia GPU-s to the integrated GPU to display it - and this it what bumblebee does and the same way it works on Windows too. Eventuality you can use this way https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus but this will render the entire desktop on Nvidia GPU and  passthrough it through the iGPU.
I tried using bumblebee but it didn't seem to function corrently. You said "but this will render the entire desktop on Nvidia GPU and  passthrough it through the iGPU", what consequences does this have? Would you mind helping me setting bumblebee up?

  • GPU not being used at all. (gtx 860M). Lenovo Y50-70 laptop.

    Hello!
I recently upgraded to windows 10 via windows update and did a clean install after the upgrade. Installed all the neccesary drivers etc etc. The usual drill. I consider myself rather tech savy.
After a few days of casual gaming with LoL i noticed that my Nvidia GTX 860M GPU was not being used AT ALL, only the integrated Intel HD 4600.
This was further proved to be right after I installed Path of Exile and kept getting BSODs each time after around 10 minute of playing with various error messages revolving around the file "igdkmd64.sys". I've tried completely deleting the drivers using safe mode and the driver cleaner program and reinstalling other drivers (ex. the lenovo driver dated 14/7. ) with no luck.
I've tried all the settings within intel hd graphics and nvidia controlpanel. I've also tried checking BIOS. No luck there either.
Both of the GPU's also show up in device management without any issues.
I also tried disabling the intel hd graphics within device managent which resulted in the basic adapters being used and my screen looks bad...  My current Nvidia driver is 353.62. I'll post some various screenshots here:
    Device management with both activated:
    http://bildr.no/image/Rjk3ZFpK.jpeg
Nvidia control panel with both GPUs active in device management:
    http://bildr.no/image/L3lYb1ZC.jpeg
This shows up when I try to check Nvidia display settings when intel HD graphics is DISABLED in device management. It basically translates to:
"Nvidia displays ettings are not available. You're not using a display connected to a Nvidia GPU"
    http://bildr.no/image/TS85TTZp.jpeg
My display settings options with intel HD graphics being disabled:

Can provide further information if required. Not sure what you need to know, but bottom line is that my GTX 860M GPU is not being used for anything at all.
i'm assuming that all I can do for now is to either wait for updated drivers from lenovo or to roll back to windows 8.1 (Works fine in win 8.1)?

More than a fix I think it has more to do with the graphics drivers and in some cases Windows 10 installation issues.
    About the Graphics drivers,
Try uninstalling the NVIDIA GPU in Control Panel > Device manager
Uninstall everything related to NVIDIA in Control Panel > Prgrams & Features
Restart the system and wait for it to install the NVIDIA GPU again.
I would also advise that you try older drivers, if they are available.
    About Windows 10 Installation,
I have installed Win 10 twice now. In my previous Win 10 installation my system was running slow, Cortana was not working and couple more issues.
In current installation, everything is working great till now.
What I did different in second installation -
I installed all drivers upgrades for Win 8.1
All windows updates for Win 8.1 before upgrading to Win 10
I downloaded Win 10 ISO and started Win 10 setup from a bootable USB (by running Setup file while logged into windows 8.1)
During upgrade, I did not Apply Updates for Win 10 (Selected the bottom option)
    Then windows installed normally
Updates to Win 10 were applied after installation.

  • Ultra low frame rates, GPU not being used

While using After effects during playback, I am getting about 10-4 FPS. With frame rates that low it's basically impossible to make any videos. I am using a desktop gadget to monitor GPU usage. I noticed that my GPU is not being used at all, 0% usage and only a few MB of memory being consumed out of 4 gigs of GDDR5. I called Adobe customer service and basically I was told that After effects only uses as much GPU power as it needs to. Ok, that makes since and If I was getting 30+ FPS then I wouldn't care, but it seems odd to me that After effects is running so poorly and not using my GPU. If my GPU was maxed out, then I would understand I need a more powerful GPU to improve frame rates, but since my GPU is not being used at all, not even a bit then I don't think it's a hardware problem, but some sort of setting that is not right. The only thing I could think of is that my HDD is pretty slow or that GTX cards are not designed to run Open Gl and maybe that's the problem, but I double checked the Adobe website and GTX cards are supported.  Also I downloaded some other GPU monitoring software to double check and both the Desktop gadget and the GPU software monitor show no activity. I am really new to After effects.  Thanks for help.

That's because it appears that you're using AE incorrectly.  I bet you're assuming that if you hit the space bar, AE plays back video like a video editing application.
    Well, it doesn't.
AE is an effects, motion graphics and compositing application.  It's designed to do completely different things than an editing application does.  Hence, it doesn't work like an editing application does.  For example, IT DOESN'T PLAY BACK VIDEO IN REAL TIME.  That's why you got that getting started link.  At least do yourself the favor of reading how AE works.
And for the purposes of this thread, it wouldn't hurt you to learn how to RAM Preview: hit zero on the numeric keypad and see what happens.  It's just one of the many basics you need to know before you jump into the deep end of the pool with AE.

  • GPU Not Being Used By LR

I have just updated to latest version of LR and it is not using my GPU.  In LR system info it says it is but if I monitor my GPU clock speed then I can see it is not using it.

  • Insane performance issue. GPU not being used at all for cropping.

I regularly record my screen and later open the resulting file in Pr and export only a square on it. I import the video, maybe cut away some fluff, and export, choosing to crop it.
The result is a painful ordeal that cripples my computer for hours every single day, where Premiere Pro CC uses almost 100% CPU constantly, but 0% of the GPU. It's really extremely slow. Other export tasks seem to be as quick as you expect them to be. But not this particular job, which I rely on every day. Very annoying.
There is simply no way that this is intended. The GPU seems to be made for things like this. Why isn't Pr using it?
I have 20 GB RAM, a very powerful quad core Xeon, a new Nvidia GPU, solid state disk, etc. Windows 8.1 Update 1. My computer is never slow for other tasks. This is really a very annoying issue as it makes using the computer nearly impossible for hours a day. For no good reason. It needs to use the graphics card to crop!

It just really annoys me that this kind of thing is ever turned off, hidden away and just... ambiguous.
Its hardly hidden away.  Its in the NEW PROJECT Settings page and first setting drop down option.
There are reasons why its an option... buts its ON by default on any new project I start.

  • HBOgo "StageVideo is not being used"

I just updated flash today, November 25 2013, which gives me version 11,9,900,152.  The problem I'm having seems specific to the HBOgo.com site.
The problem occurs in all three browsers that I've tried, Firefox (my preferred browser), Chrome, and IE 9.  Also, I've tried the various suggested troubleshooting suggested on the Adobe site as far as enabling Flash addon in IE after disabling (unchecking) the choice for ActiveX filtering.  I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling all 3 browsers, reinstalling flash, resetting all video card settings to default, going through the Device Manager and uninstalling the device entirely, making sure it has no errors or conflicts anywhere and the same thing for the network devices, they all indicate that they are working properly.
My device is an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC running Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.  It has 4 GB of memory and the video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT.  The drivers are all up to date and so is every application and its associated add-ons that I will mention.  Also, it shipped with a Blu-Ray player which I've used to display Blu-Ray content on an external monitor with no issue.  (If it can do that, then shouldn't it just be some software issue preventing it from playing back a video stream of inferior quality from hbogo?)
Regarding Flash Player, I've watched videos on YouTube and Hulu (and countless other sites which stream Flash Video) at resolutions of 720 and 1080 which played at framerates between 25 and 30 fps and which also did not use hardware acceleration but nevertheless maintained CPU usage of less than 70%.  So, the computer can certainly do it even without the help of the GPU, and it can do it from other sites that use flash, but not from HBOgo.  That's a second problem, even when flash video plays well, it's still not using hardware acceleration, but first I want to know why HBOgo's flash player is so much worse than everyone else's player.
Here is the specific issue:  I navigate to HBOgo.com, pick any video to play and begin playback.  Playback usually begins at a relatively low resolution (I'd guess 480 or so based on its obvious pixelation), and then steps up the resolution gradually.  Usually after a minute or so, it will have reached its best resolution and that's when it starts dropping frames like crazy and pinning the CPU at 100%.  The video looks terribly choppy and the audio skips the more choppy the video is.  When I click pause or hit the spacebar for a pause, it will take two or three seconds as it spits out the last few video frames before finally showing the paused icon on the last frame.  Those two seconds seem to corrolate with CPU processing since there is no noticable delay when pausing video anywhere else under any other conditions.  Of course, CPU useage will drop back to 5 or 10 while the video is paused.
Right-clicking the screen lets me choose "Show Video Debug" which in turn tells me:
         StageVideo enabled in OSMF: Yes
         StageVideo is supported.
StageVideo is not being used, regular video 'probably' is.
This is where I got the information about dropped frames.  If it matters, when paused, the buffer will fill to about 400 Mb plus or minus about 10 percent of that, perhaps.  Also, during playback, the buffer maintains approximately the same amount, indicating that my ISP has no problem sending that much data to my device.  The buffer seems fill to a lenght of time, about 60 seconds; so, as the video resolution goes down, the total buffer drops accordingly... sometimes it is at 200 Mb for 60 seconds with lower resolution, etc...
Speaking of my ISP, I have Verizon FiOS (I don't know why it would matter, but I'm in King of Prussia, which is near Philadelphia, PA).  I just tested my bandwidth and it tells me that my IP is 71.175.97.244 and my download rate is 57.98 Mbps from some server in Matawan, NJ.  I don't think networking issues factor into this at all.  I say that because, digging into the developer tools (all 3 browsers show the same network activity: Firefox, Chrome, and IE) and clicking on the "Network" column, it consistently shows low latency for all the stream components.  For example:
         path: http://hds.pro12.lv3.hbogo.com/videos/PRO12/e2/hbo/feature/728425/hbo_821867_PRO12_f4m/hbo _821867_PRO12_8-Seg1-Frag858
         method: get
         type: video/f4f
    Timing Tab show:
         Sending: 0     Waiting: 89mg     Recieving: 159ms
This seems to indicate that I'm getting the data sent to me without any problem, so forget about network issues, right?
Also, regarding information available in Developer Tools, I can see that the flash video object has the paramater "wmode" set to "transparent".  I already wasted time messing with this before I realized that the paramater is irrelavent while in fullscreen mode -- besides the fact that even when it is changed to direct or gpu when not in full screen, it does nothing to help matters.  I think this was covered in one of the last discussions talking about lack of hardware acceleration on HBOgo -- the same discussion that ended with a few people saying that they were going to "throw in to towel".
What am I missing here?  Why is StageVideo supported but not used?  Why do other players which use flash play videos with better quality despite still not using hardware acceleration?
    Windows Vista = updated
    NVIDIA Video Drivers = updated
    Flash Player = updated
Flash Addons (pepper flash, etc...) = updated
Firefox, Chrome, IE = all updated
There's got to be something I can do.  What is it?

    Hello Sarvanan,
What do you mean by "the respective field not having the Unit/Curr Objects"..?..some of them are of the type "number" whereas others are CHARS.
Everytime when i add some field i cannot re-create the whole transformation. There has to be some inconsistency as my mapping of source-target field is correct. I have also raised this to OSS but as usual they are taking thier own sweet time to reply.
Surprisingly the transformation got activated yesterday and the dataload too was successful. Today again the same ols problem of "parameter is not being used"..!!
still could you pls throw some light on Unit/Currency objects that u mentioned..??
    Thanks in adv.

  • Photoshop 5.1 bombs when not in use and often disables keyboard

I'm using Mac OS X 10.7.2 on an Intel Core 2 Duo IMac. A few months ago I downloaded PhotoShop 5.1 after having used every previous issue of PhotoShop without a problem.
    1. Often when I have Photoshop open on my desktop but not actively using it, it will freeze and I'll have to force quit and restart. When I installed the latest version of InDesign and Illustrator they would also freeze when not in use, however removing and resinstalling them seemed to fix the problem for them, but not for Photoshop.
2.I will be working along on a project when suddenly all of the alphanumerical keys on my keypad won't work. I ultimately have to restart the Mac to get them to work again in any program. This never happens with any other program and I have tried othe keypads, even one just out of the box, and it's always the same.
I have removed and reinstalled Photoshop twice, but still the same issues.
I have called the Adobe helpline and tried all of their fixes, but it still happens. They resolved that it must be my Mac. But Mac says because it is related to a specific software it is not their problem.
    Any ideas?

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
It might be Suitcase 3, because I keep having trouble with it and issues with the FM Core.
I'm also getting this prompt which I don't know how to resolve: "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences. (I couldn't find it in the preferences and not sure who the video card manufacturer is.)
Here is the other software that usually is or may be running at the same time as Photoshop: InDesign 7.5, Illustrator 15.1.0, ITunes 10.5.3, Mail 5.1, Preview 5.5.1, Suitcase Fusion 3 14.2.0, Firefox 9.0.1, Microsoft Word 14.1.4 and Excel 14.1.4; less often: PowerPoint 14.1.4, ICal 5.0.1 and Address Book 6.1
When I first had problems with this install as I mentioned I upgraded my operating software and donwloaded MacKeeper to clean things up. It hasn't helped.

  • GPU not rendering output file at all, but mercury engine selected to work...?

    Hi There,
New proud owner of a PNY nVidia GTX 650 Ti, and after installing it Premiere gave me a "driver not supported" message.
I closed it, and edited the supported cards list, and restarted it. No error at all.
I made sure that the GPU rendering was selected, and tried to create a 720p youtube file using the same settings as my camera uses (29.97fps framerate, same resolution etc)
this file took a while to produce, and my CPU was 100% in use the entire time, both cores.
GPU-z showed a max 28% use but was rarely over 5%.
I restarted the render this time using software, and it gave me the SAME TIME TO RENDER.
So i am not using my GPU at all to render.
What am I doing wrong? Please help me out. I got this card because according to all over the entire internet, these are the best entry level cards.
So why support a 650m mobile i presume card, but not this one?
    thanks!

I will point out the document that John posted here, it clearly states that the CUDA cores are not for exporting.
Here is where my confusion from coming to a professional video editing suite come from:
    1. Powerdirector 11 literally went from taking 30-60 minutes to create and export an mp4 files to about three to six as soon as I put in the older HD 6570 card. It has terrible washed out colors, so after testing a 10 second clip via premiere pro i went with that.
    2. Sonyvegas is the same, just put in a video card that can actually use the GPU during the final exporting of a file and see a decrease in render time.
    3. the GPU is being used in premiere pro, i can see it going up/down during editing but not like the other applications. The other apps use about the same gpu/cpu ratio, they simply create the file much faster than premiere seems to.
powerdirector just seems to create the file much faster, whereas I am sure that PP produces a much better quality file.

  • S430 - deactive nvidia GPU and still use external displays?

    Hi,
I'm interessted in buying an Edge S430. Is it possible to deactive the dedicated nvidia gpu in the bios?
Furthermore, is the intel GPU cabable of using external displays?
    Thank you.
    Best,

S430 with Nvidia discrete gpu can be disabled in the BIOS by selecting the integrated GPU option.
I think the DP still work, but not sure whether the Thinkpad HDMI do too.

  • Premiere Pro System Resouces Not beign used while exporting

    Hi all,
I have been editing this video and last night I started rendering it. However, it is far from beign fast. The estimated remaining time AME shows is 65h!!!
However, that's not the worst thing. My CPU, RAM, Hard drive and even GPU are not beign used. The measured system usage while exporting this same clip is:
    15% CPU
    +- 2GB RAM
1MB/S Footage Hard Drive (out of max. 50MB/s)
Sporadical GPU spikes @90%, average 40%.
    Project Characteristics:
    Full sequence almost 2h long.
    2 Layers Maximum.
Raw clip footage: H264 1080p DSLR Footage.
Red Giant Denoiser II (GPU Accelerated) on 50% of the clips.
PPro's included RGB Curves and HSL on 50% of the clips.
Exporting to H264, 1080p 30fps, VBR 1 Pass, 15Mbps (18Mbps max) using Adobe Media Encoder (PPro's "Export" option doesn't even run).
    System Specs:
    Amd FX-8350 (8x)4.5GHz
    16GB DDR3 1866MHz Ram
    Nvidia Geforce GTX650 (2GB GDDR5)
    Windows 8 x64 OS.
    Cache, OS and Adobe CS6 Suite drive: Samsung 840 PRO 128gb (500MB/S R, 480MB/S W)
Footage & Export Drive: Seagate 1TB (don't know exact model)
I know my graphics card isn't the best for this job, but it is not even beign used... My first thought is that there was an HHD bottleneck, as it is not fast at all, but measuring my system usage I have found that is not the soft chain this time. What am I doing wrong?
    BTW, I'm using CS6.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gonzalo Ruiz.

Wow, I never thought that could make such a difference. Will the speed of those four drives have much of an impact given they are all rated over 120MB/s? Or will just having them on sepparate HDDs be enough? What about 4K?
For example, will the difference between a WD Caviar Blue 1TB and a 850 Pro 256GB (or any other good HDD vs a fast SSD for that matter) be noticeable using it as a cache drive? What about in 4k editing?
Will using a dedicated SSD for both cache and previews be slower than two dedicate HDDs? The SSDs I am comparing are 4x faster in R/W speeds than this HDD and a many more times faster in Random IO (IOPS).
    This is my upgrade plan:
Samsung 840 PRO 128GB: OS, Programs, Pagefile
Samsung 850 PRO 256GB: Cache, Cache Database, Previews
WD Caviar Blue 1TB: Media and Project Files
Existing Seagate 500GB: Raw Footage, Archive (at the moment installed but full)
External USB3 USB Flashdrive: Export (not going to use it every time)
This export has been an epic fail in terms of length... 60 hrs... Having only used before a ridiculously low spec-ed computer, when I built this one and exported just short clips, I thought it was normal...Guess it isn't, now that I have to edit long videos.
    Thanks for all your entries,

  • GTX 750 Ti in Illsutrator - GPU Performance feature - Compatible GPU not found

    Hi,
I recently bought a GeForce GTX 750 Ti and was really happy that I could turn on the new "GPU performance" - it really made a difference.
Today I had to reinstall Illustrator (the OS was slow) and now I can't turn on the "GPU performance" feature. It says that "Compatible GPU not found. GPU Performance is disabled"  and "Device: Multiple Graphics Cards detected"
I'm using the latest GeForce driver. I know that the GTX 750 Ti is officially not supported (Seriously!? -  this is also really annoying since older, less powerful cards are on the supported list).
I don't want to buy an other card, but if there is no other option...
    Any suggestions?

I have just completed running the entire PPBM8 script with the GTX 750 Ti, and compared it to the results that I had obtained over two weeks ago with the older GTX 560 card.
GTX 750 Ti on CC 2014.8.2 (1TB Samsung F3 as project disk):
GTX 560 on CC 2014.8.1 (1TB Western Digital Black WD1002FAEX as project drive):
It appears that the first-generation Maxwell (GM107) GPU somehow improved the H.264 rendering/encoding performance compared to the older Fermi (GF114) GPU. The MPEG-2 rendering/encoding performance is practically equal with both of these particular GPUs.
Verdict? The GTX 750 Ti is the right choice for a PC that's equipped (however less than ideally) with a higher-end i5 without hyperthreading or a quad-core i7 that cannot be overclocked much if at all (and this is assuming that that PC has a sufficiently fast disk subsystem).
By the way, the GT 740 that was suggested for the OP's system (given the "Green" drives) is not a Maxwell-generation GPU at all - but a Kepler-generation GPU (in this case, based on the GK107) instead. The GT 730 with GDDR5 memory that I recommended as an alternative to the GT 740 DDR3 is based on the GK208 GPU. (And I do not recommend most GT 730s on the market as they are based on an old Fermi-generation GPU - the GF108 that debuted with the GT 430 back in 2010.)

and keep getting this message; Adobe Acrobat/reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in Web Browser.

Could I suggest a workaround for PDFs until a solution is posted? Open them directly in the Adobe application rather than in a browser tab.
In your Adobe application(s), go to:
    Edit > Preferences > Internet
Then uncheck "Display PDF in browser"
(There are very few sites where having PDF integrated is really beneficial.)
