Will my Grass Valley ADVC-HD50 Real-Time HDMI to HDV Converter work with Flash Media Live Encoder?

if you go to audio/video settings you can duplicate a setup that is close to what you want and edit that setup. under capture presets> audio select whichever input on the mac you wish to use.
consult your documentation with the capture device for the video side. when you have something that works save that as an easy setup (on the summary tab "create easy setup")
I've never used either the optical nor analog in so I can't vouch for it's behavior however it is available as an option
Hopefully your device will somehow pass timecode so edits are repeatable

Canopus advc 300 grass valley

Hi! Just before upgrading to Snow Leopard, I asked both Apple Assistance and Grass Valley Assistance in order to know if my *CANOPUS ADVC 300* comply with the new OS. Both of them answered that I had to ask the other one!
I searched the web for forums, but I found just that Canopus ADVC 100 isn't recognized by Snow Leopard (perhaps 'cause firewire connection).
Nothing about ADVC 300 (which is currently on sale on Apple Store!)...
Anyone have already tried this with Snow Leopard?
Or will I be compelled to make a partition with the old OS just to acquire video with canopus??

Grass Valley MXF files imported to Premiere CS3 ?

Does anyone know if you can import Grass Valley MXF files into Premiere CS3, and if not, is there a program I can get that can take the MXF file and convert it into a different file?

(We just upgraded Premiere to the latest upgrades)

I realize that this is very old, but I would like to point out that MXF files can be read/used by Premiere CS5.5... but not all MXF's are created equal. Our Canon MXF's come in just fine, however everything we shoot on our Grass Valley Infinity cameras can not be imported natively. For that we've had to either use Edius to import and convert the files to Premiere friendly files or purchase the Main Concepts MPEG 2 plugin. With that plugin the MXF files can be imported & edited in CS5.5.
Not sure about any of this in relation to CS3 though (assuming you haven't upgraded in the last 3 years).

We are trying to close caption our telecasts. We get the captioning files done out of house, pull them back into Premiere, and then embed them. The TV station requires .mxf files with the file embedded as a 708 stream, to play on their Grass Valley K2 vid

Whenever I export, it becomes a 608 stream, and will not play on their servers.

I'm sorry to hear you are having a problem. Thank you for taking the time to post here.
Here are some questions:
1. What version of PPRO are you using? MAC or WIN?
2. Is the caption data you are embedding a 708 caption stream?
3. When you re-import the MXF with captioning embedded back into PPRO, does it show 708 closed captions in PPRO?
PPRO will embed 708 caption streams to MXF -- I just did this, re-imported the embedded MXF to PPRO, and I see the captions in the MXF.
If you could share one of your files with me, I could take a look.

FCP and Grass Valley K2

Hi All
The educational institution I am working at is considering upgrading from Grass Valley Turbo, to the K2. has anybody out there had any experience with the K2 and FCP interface?
the website says the workflow is flawless, but I want to know from someone who's actually used it. The main points is how easy it is to move media back and forth between the systems, and what kind of codecs that can be used.
We shoot lots of stuff on P2, edit in FCP, and want to move the exported projects into the K2 for use in a TV news/current affairs studio production. We also want to record programs in the studio onto the K2, and move these recordings on to FCP for further editing. In the past we have used the Turbo for this, but the process has been very clunky, unstable and complex (for our students).

Not really David, the K2 is essentially their video server storage system and in the context of the question it seems pretty clear our poster is talking about hanging his FCP off that storage for transfer of media to/from his FCP system(s) and/or using it as a SAN for edit in place via iSCSI connection.
Jokke, I work in a K2 SAN environment, and I work with FCP and EDIUS but our K2 system would need an upgrade for us to take full advantage of the latest capabilities, including the GV FCP Connect Plug-in so I'm afraid I can't give you first hand knowledge of the system of the current functionality ... I have researched it somewhat tho, and could probably fill in some blanks for you ...
For example, support formats for edit in place w/ FCP are currently DV (25/50/100), IMX-D10 (30/40/50), XDCAM HD/EX/HD422 (25/35/50) and read only for AVC-I (50/100)
... but I can't tell you as much as the man with the plan regarding FCP/Edius K2 integration. Need export settings for grass valley T2 iDDR

I'm getting ready to send my show over to a cable station. There requiremnts need to match a Grass Valley T2 IDDR playback unit. They support a wide range of files (DVCPROHD, MPEG-2, Quicktime, HQ AVI, Windows media Video HD), but the frame rates listed are 59.94i, 50i, 24P and 23.98P. Most of the 1920x1080 presets are for 29.97. Any suggestions on thye best preset or settings to use? It list HQ AVI as an acceptable format, is that the same as mp4 (H.264?). Hmmm. A rather unhelpful, and slightly arrogant, response there from Jim Cookman. I don't read anywhere in the OP about using this setup 'in the field'...
I have an Indigo, and I've been having the same problems as the OP (testing the setup prior to using in the field!).
I've tried capturing the 1394 outputs to a variety of devices, with mixed success.
To a Macbook Pro with FCS:
Basically followed the process outlined by Studio X above.
FCP7 will not recognise the device at all, even with 'non-contollable device' selected. All permutations of settings tried.
However, iMovie is quite happy with the video stream, and displays it OK.
To a W7 laptop with Avid Media Composer & VLC player:
MC will not recognise the device, and will not accept that there is a DV signal there.
However, VLC is quite happy with the video stream, and displays it OK.
To a Sony HVR-M15E deck:
This displays the video stream, but it is broken up with grey blocks all over the screen.
The one thing that links all these is that at no point is any audio present.
Further reseach has uncovered this Indigo FAQ: www.grassvalley.com/rnt/Switcher/Indigo%2015%20-%20IEEE%201394%20Firewire.pdf
that states something that is not mentioned anywhere in the user manual or data sheet: the Indigo 1394 ports do not carry audio, either as inputs or outputs!
Which, combined with the fact that they only seem to be recognised by non-professional applications, renders them pretty useless, IMO.

Import Grass Valley Infinity

I'm working on a program with a friend who is shooting with the following:
1. Canon HFS10 – The MTS files are 24Mb/s 1920x1080 video with stereo audio which I believe are AVC files.
2. Grass Valley Infinity – The “raw” file is a JPEG2000 file with 4 channel audio recorded at 100Mb/s.
He was going to load the files on a HD and I was to edit in FCPX. I have been unable to import any of our test files. Any ideas?

Idoubt the Grass Valley files would come into FCPX. You'd want to check with the Grass Valley side and see if you can do an export to another format that's supported- such as ProRes or Uncompressed.
For the AVC footage- you'd need to have the original card structure from the camera in order to ingest. Otherwise, the friend would also need to convert to ProRes, etc. MPEG Streamclip might be up to the task of conversion- http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

Grass Valley Turbo iDDR Direct Import Formats?

Has anyone successfully figured out a way to export of video file that imports into a Grass Valley Turbo iDDR seemlessly without the Turbo needing to re-format the media itself?
I'm using 8 of these drives on a live production next week and we're looking to reduce our media import times.

Hi Matt, I produce media for corporate events regularly. I just finished a show where we used 3 Grass Valley Turbo iDDR systems exclusively.
The iDDR accepts QuickTime (h.264 codec with the latest DDR software installed), MPEG2, .WMV and a host of other formats. We used MPEG2 (not muxed) for the DDR as it has a max 480 resolution (think of the DDR as DVD player without the disc). The iDDR has ethernet, usb, and firewire inputs as well as CD/DVD for transfer. We used USB with great results as we were projecting on 32 foot screens.
If you are going out of FCPro (which is what I mainly do), I export as a stand-alone Quicktime file (Progressive or Interlace depending on your content) then I use Compresser with a custom setting of MPEG2 (audio/video combined). No problems.
As a side note, contact your AV person who runs the iDDR, they are great at answering questions. I also downloaded the iDDR manual from Grass Valley.

Grass valley k2 solo

Hello i am new to media encoder and I am trying to transcode media files from an apple computer a .mov file and a file from a windows pc a .wmv file on to a grass valley K2 solo. The grass valley K2 solo works with DVC PRO 100 or AVC I CLASS 100 4.2.2 codecs and uses GXF container. When I tried to transcode these files they failed to transfer to the grass valley K2. I am not sure what the problem is or what would be the right settings to transcode media onto the grass valley K2 solo. I tried to convert the file to DVC PRO or AVC but neither have worked. The Grass valley K2 sees the file but wont transfer the file into its media bin. Can anyone help?

Grass Valley ADVC110 vs Buying another camera

I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me out here. I've always gotten great advice here.
I purchased a Sony DCR-SR80 about a year ago to shoot and edit training videos for my company. Great little camera but a real pain in the butt when it comes to converting video. I've been using MPEG Streamclip viewer to convert to DV and editing in iMovie HD. This whole process takes way too much time from the time you convert, import and then edit as I'm sure most of you know.
I was contemplating just buying a cheap Canon MiniDV ZR960 so that I can shoot directly into iMovie or at least eliminate the conversion process when shooting remotely. Then I saw this Grass Valley A/D converter which is about the same price as the Canon.
Given the choice, would I be better off buying a completely new camera or sticking with my Sony and linking through the Grass Valley?
Does anyone have any thoughts or comments on this?

That's actually a great choice IMO (going with a camcorder that shoots native DV).
A few pointer's:
1. Make certain the camera also shoots 16 bit audio and will not default to 12 bit. If it does default to 12 bit, then consider one that will not.
2. Remember you will need lots of hard drive space when dealing with .dv since it runs about 13 GB's per hour. The i-apps work best with plenty of elbow room on the boot volume. So make sure you have no less than 20 GB's remaining of available HD space (and hopefully you have much more than this).
Pro apps also respond a bit better when you have ample HD space available on the boot volume as well as assigning HD space on a scratch disc or media HD in order to free up the main HD.
3. G4 is a great machine. I use it as well but I did have to add a new CPU upgrade from sonnet to work with beefier apps. Work on your financial adviser since the price to do this modification is a fraction of the cost of a new mac.
You may also want to add more sdram when upgrading. Newer apps will respond much better in this regard.
4. Lastly and perhaps most importantly in your own situation, make absolutely certain the camcorder has what is referred to as "digital pass through" (in both directions).

Grass Valley Turbo iDDR + Indigo + FCP

We are planning to order Grass Valley Indigo mixer and maybe Turbo iDDR with it. but iDDR is not recording quicktimes. only MPEG2 and AVI. do you think it's going to work fine if we mix with Indigo, record with iDDR and edit AVIs with FCP?

The reason why we are looking for iDDR is that Grass Valley's Indigo seems to be the only video mixer with inputs/outputs we need and its cheap. and they should work together quite fine.
How about Grass Valley's M-series iVDR? that should export quictimes, it just doubles the price.
iDDR is so much cheaper than iVDR and iDDR can also handle HD. so I rather buy iDDR.
i did fast test in one of our edits that how FCP can handle AVIs. it seems wo work quite normally. only problem is exporting quictime, I marked "make movie self-contained" but it still exports it like I haven't marked it. then I export as AVI and it worked fine. It doesn't matter in our playout system that is it QT or AVI.
so if FCP-editing with AVI's works normally maybe Indigo+iDDR is our choise.

Grass Valley gxf and mxf files

Hello,
Just curious if anyone has tried to import any type of media file from a GV K2 server. Seems that FCSvr won't work with it and neither will Compressor. Gxf and mxf are both indusrty standard (SMPTE) exchange wrappers...seems odd that apple doesn't directly support re-wrapping into QT compatible type?
Telestream (and some others) support re-wrapping through additional apps, but more software (and another transcode step) is not an ideal solution for us...

Most of the limitations are imposed by Grass Valley - they have very restrictive file-based transfer options in and out of the K2s and their MOV support is almost unusable in its current state.
We have considerable experience using Final Cut Server to process media to and from Grass Valley K2 servers. We have developed custom software tools that utilize the MXF4Mac Import and Export components to allow media to be re-wrapped from MXF to MOV without transcoding. We have also solve a number of Grass Valley integration issues with audio and MXF compatibility issues.
