Grayscale problem
our company has been having a problem opening certain pdf files in acrobat (8/9 both reader and standard.) we would either get a message that reads 'page out of range' or 'a drawing error occurred.' these files open perfectly fine in foxit pdf reader. through trial and error i discovered these errors were attributed to grayscale images being used in the pdf documents. once i converted the images to rgb and re-made the documents, they opened just fine with acrobat.
is this a common problem? is there a plugin or work-around to remedy this? i also found that when i recreated the documents, they were HUGE files. an 82kb file turned into a 6mb file. this may be due to the fact that i don't know standard that well, yet.
any help would be appreciated. thank you.
It may be an encoding error in your original application. Acrobat typically stored graphics as they were sent as far as I know and your version may not like the specific graphic. Acrobat is somewhat picky about the structure and that may be the issue in that the original graphic had problems (OK, I am guessing a bit since you are getting frustrated. It may be that no one quite has had your problem). You might set the printer to use B&W and see if that helps. Also, with color you have different levels of color, with 16 bit through millions of colors. With the latter, huge is the proper word to describe the result at times. You might find a gray-scale conversion works well.
I am not helping much, but at least giving some points to consider.

I searched the forum and didn't see this discussed before...
I just imported a lot of photos into my library, some of which were PSD files in 8-bit grayscale format.
Those files show in the browser as black and when double clicked on open up in a strange alpha-like mode where you can almost see the photo matrix behind the photo.
I just did a test by making and saving a Grayscale image in Photoshop CS3 and this behavior did not repeat. But the issue exists with numerous files I created in 2000 (Photoshop 7?).
Obviously I can work-around this by opening and resaving each file. I just wondered if anyone else had encountered this feature.Escapee, this is an old iPhoto problem. I remember this from last year, and I spent some time amusing myself with some of the files I created.
If the image has a colorsync profile that's not some kind of RGB, weird things happen in iPhoto. CMYK profiles wouldn't even import into iPhoto 6 (don't know if they do now) and Grayscale profiles would turn the photo into something like a negative. It was cool to use the Appearance background color slider to see the background bleed through the blacks (or was it whites)
The way to check is to open the image in Preview and get Info. It will tell you if it's a grayscale color profile or not. -
Hi!
My problem concerns grayscale. First I load tiff-image from a file (OK) and then I want to change its colors to grayscale and after that I save that converted picture as Bmp, but this is not working. I have tried codes that I found from forum, but those arent helping me.So, in brief how to convert tiff image to grayscale image and sav it as Bmp. Could anyone give me a code? This grayscale seems to be problem for many people.You can convert tiff image to grey image by:
public PlanarImage convertColor(PlanarImage src_image){
double[][] matrix = {
{ .114D, 0.587D, 0.299D, 0.0D }
// Create the ParameterBlock.
ParameterBlock pb = new ParameterBlock();
pb.addSource(src_image);
pb.add(matrix);
// Perform the band combine operation.
return (PlanarImage)JAI.create("bandcombine", pb, null);
Write you codes like this:
PlanarImage srcc=convertColor(planarImage);
BMPWriter bmpW=new BMPWriter(srcc,fc.getCurrentDirectory().getPath(),file.getName()); bmpW.saveImage();
Following is class used for save image to bmp
import java.awt.*;

return;
if (img==null){
System.out.println("img is null");
return;
try {
// encoder.encode(img);
encoder.encode(img);
out.close();
catch (IOException e) {
System.out.println("IOException at encoding..");

Color & grayscale problems with LJ CP2025dn
I recognize that it is unrealistic to expect high fidelity color printing from my CP2025dn, but it really does print much too saturated and contrasty images. I can get much better results in Photoshop by applying a Levels correction before printing and shifting the Gamma setting to about 2.1 or 2.2. Is there any way that I can apply such a correction to all my printing?
By the way, I have read the links under "More like this", but those threads don't seem to clarify my question. Originally I had installed my Epson driver from the original (old) Epson CD. When that didn't work I uninstalled and installed the newer Epson driver from the Epson's site. Doesn't work and the problems I'm having are the ones I mentioned above.

HP Color LaserJet HP 3600DN Windows 7 drivers (32 bit and or 64 bit)
This just seems outrageous....... it seems that no drivers for the HP3600 series printer for Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit). Can't find anything, from the few post I have seen, no response from HP, or others that the printer is not supported ???? a printer that is only a year and a half old!? Don't know why I purchase HP printers if HP does not intend on supporting them. This is the second (yes, second) HP printer I have had this happen to - totally inexcusable. I seriously don't think I will purchase another HP printer (work or personal) if HP does not support their hardware. At this stage, ready to get rid of my HP laptop or anything that has an HP logo on it.
Now that I have vented, is there ANY simple solution to make my non functional HP 3600DN printer work with Windows 7 (64 bit) - or am I just forced to retire a 16 month old printer and purchase another brand that supports their hardware? Thanks,I posted in that thread as well....it seems the Vista 64 dirvers do work but as telee mentioned, the grayscale function does not (it seems to print the reverse...what's white is black and what's black is white), kinda like a negative. Not only does this waste toner, but it's not a useable print.
Most of my work is done in colour anyway....and any black print is normally condusive to printing text, so the grayscale problem has not really affected me much.
Having said that, I am sure one day when I need to print in grayscale I am going to probably start punching the wall because I won't be able to reproduce a proper print.
I really do hope HP creates Win 7 drivers for the 3600 CLJ. Having worked for HP I can tell you that it usually has nothing to do with not being able to "do it" from a programming perspective....the decision to not support a product when a new OS comes out is normally from a product lineup perspective wherein HP wants you to spend money to buy a newer printer....one in a similar price range that would probably end up costing you more from a cost per page perspective....which equals $$$ on toner sales.
HP makes money on ink and toner...and many times printers are sold at cost and sometimes even at a loss. -
I am trying to use the brightness adjustment on a grayscale photoshop CS6 file. The preview shows the adjustment working and changes the brightness, but when you click to apply the change, it does not apply the adjustment. I have run into this problem before, although rarely, with some other files over the years and with earlier versions of CS. I would like to know how to overcome this problem?
Make sure you are viewing your image at 100%. At smaller views, pixels and layers and the way they interact are approximate interpolations and won't show you the actual pixel-for-pixel changes.

Toggle composite and grayscale mask in Quick Mask mode : Problem
Hello.
I have a problem with this command : "Toggle composite and grayscale mask in Quick Mask mode"
I know i have to press the tidle key " ~ " to activate it but i'm using an Azerty keyboard (belgium) and i have trouble with it.
The only way i can use the tidle key on my keyboard is to press "Option + n" keys.
So in Photoshop, i load a channel selection, turn into "quick mask mode" and then press "Option + n", but nothing happens.
If i try with "Command+Option+n", i open the window for a new document.
I have tried ALL combination of keys but nothing worked.
I have also tried to change the keyboard input to Britain, Usa, etc but it still doesn't work.
I'm using the english version of Photoshop CS6 (Subscription), and an Azerty Keyboard (Belgium) on a Mac Osx Snow leopard.
How can i solve this problem ?Do you have an AltGr key on the right side of the keyboard?
Anyway on a windows system set to your language/keyboard layout i can hold down the AltGr key while pressing the tilde key (on the right side of the keyboard up and to the right of the AltGr key)
and that seems to work in photoshop in place of tilde key on an us english keyboard.
Not sure what the AltGr key would be on a mac system, maybe the option key on the right side of the keyboard?
Added:
I don't think it will work on an english version of cs6, you probably need a localized version of cs6.
If your on the subscrition plan you can change the language version of photoshop cs6.

Problems with ACR v8.3 and grayscale
I've upgraded to ACR v8.3. Now when I save from ACR to a jpg, and bring it later into PS CC it is grayscale. If I open it in ACR into PS, it is in colour. Have I inadvertently ticked a box somewhere please? It's happening with all raw files. Thanks
Sounds like the setup in the DVD-player is wrong. Enter the menu in the DVD set-top player, and tell it what kind of TV you are using (4:3/16:9).
Also make sure that you have tagged the tracks in DVDSP correctly. In the Inspector, select 4:3 for the 4:3 track, and 16:9 Letterbox for the 16:9 tracks.

Problem - photoshop CS4 - colour only in grayscale
When I try to select a new colour (either from swatches or colour picker) it just appears in a grayscale tone - so a yellow appears as a light gray and a navy blue as a dark gray for example. Any ideas how to fix this?
Take a look at your image mode. I'll bet you have a grayscale document.
From the menus, to make it a color document, choose Image - Mode - RGB Color.

Problem with colorized grayscale TIFF printing as solid color fill
I have a grayscale TIFF that was created in PSD CS5, placed into an AI CS5 file and then colorized with a PMS color. The resulting effect on screen is correct, but when I go to print, it prints a solid (100%) fill of the PMS where the TIFF image should be. I have double and triple checked to make sure the TIFF is grayscale, and I have also played around with various Transparency Flattening settings in AI (both in the file, and in the print window). Nothing seems to work. I even tried a work-around by creating the TIFF as a monotone PMS in PSD, and again it places properly in AI and looks good up until printing when it outputs as a solid 100% PMS. The grayscale TIFF prints correctly from AI if it's NOT colorized, but the minute I add color, it prints as a solid fill. The monotone PMS TIFF never prints correctly from AI. I'm out of good ideas (or any ideas, frankly).
Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!Make sure you are not placing the image into a rectangle, similar to InDesign image placement. The .tiff should be placed as a single element. Then, select just the .tiff and assign a fill to it.

Iphone 5 with IOS 8 just switched from color display to black and white. Accessibility options were not changed and hard reset failed to cure
Problem solved by resetting all preferences, which was not my preference.

So I was simply wiping the dust off my screen, with Safari open, and once I had finished... Safari just went belly-up.
And I need some help badly.
First thing that I noticed was that Safari now has a "dark mode" menu bar.
Secondly, my auto-fill user names and passwords no longer "auto-fill" - I have to place the cursor in a field and have the keyboard pop up in order to access the auto-fill function: previously, the fields simply, well, auto-filled.
And, thirdly, when I attempt to post a message to the Apple Support Communities, there is no visible text in the body of the text. I'm using my MacBook Pro to type this message.
I have searched and searched to try to find remedies to my problems, but I can't find a thing. There's nothing unusual in Accessibility (that would make the whole screen, for example, grayscale), nothing changed in passwords, etc.
I'm at my wits end! Even restoring from an older backup doesn't remedy any of the problems.
Can anyone help?
Clinton
iPad Air 2, WiFi onlyIf the menu bar at the top of Safari show white text on a grey background, and autofill isn't working, then you probably have private browsing 'on'. Tap the icon top right of the Safari screen (the square on top of a second square), tap the Private button at the top of the next screen and then Done - Safari should then go back to its normal colours and autofill should work again

Help! Colour banding graphics problem /posterization?
Hi.
I've been having a few problems lately with colour banding/gradients/posterization. I first noticed it 3 or 3 days ago in photoshop, and seem to have noticed it's mostly system wide. I ask her because you're all clever and I don't have a clue what to do next! So please help me!
Quoted from my thread somewhere else that I've had no luck with and was recomendded to try here...
Since yesterday whenever I'm using Photoshop and there is blurred edges/gradients etc, basically not solid colours, there is really noticeable sharp colour banding lines around it.
It's happened before and I've accidentally had it on 8-bit instead of 16-bit, but I've checked all that and it's on 16-bit.
I've googled it and the only suggestion was about duplicating the layer and blurring it then adding noise, but that didn't even work.
[EDIT] SINCE THEN I HAVE REALISED IT IS AFFECTING SYSTEM WIDE GRADIENTS AND COLOURS
My system is set to Highest 32-bit too. I changed it to 16-bit to see what happened and it made the banding 10 times worse.
An example of the problem
Posted: Thu May 03, 2012 7:32 pm Post subject:
It's supposed to be a smooth gradient. I didn't use the gradient tool, I used the brush tool with solid white and then smudged and blurred it like I always do.
That's a good point, and actually I did start it as an 8-bit originally (my photoshop has been starting as 8-bit, grayscale for a few weeks now and I don't know why) but then after I remembered and changed it to 16-bit, and noticed the banding, I closed that document and started a new one and changed it to 16-bit RGB when the pop-up for a new document came up.
The resolution is always 72pixels/inch, and the size 256x512, colour mode RGB.
In advanced it says colour profile Working RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 which I have no clue what means, and I never usually click advanced so I don't know if that is usually that or different.
When I use the brush tool and blur and smudge it it's fine, with no banding. It's only when I lower the opacity of that layer, or use Hue/Saturation and Lightness to darken it so it's hardly visible that the banding appears.
I've just tried it again with a fresh new document and it's still the same. Even in 32-bit it's exactly the same.
It's done it before, and all I did was close and reopen Photoshop and it was all fine again, but this time it happened last night and since then I have restarted my computer, had it turned off for hours, and I've even tried it on gimp and it's the same.
Ruled out that it's my monitor, tried a different one that I know works perfectly and it's still the same.
I've double checked all drivers, and monitor profiles, and drivers for my monitor, and colour profiles, and colour management, my graphics card settings, device manager for problems with any hardware, and everythings coming back fine. Could it be that my graphics card is old and just needs replacing? I'm not good with which one to buy so would getting a new one the same be of any help? The computer is about 6 years old, and the only thing changed on it is the RAM and hard drive.
I don't really want to end up not using this computer anymore if it's a simple graphics card issue, I just don't know how to tell if it is.
The thread that is from is here if you want to see some suggestions I've already had.http://www.imvu.com/catalog/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpbb2&file=viewtopic.php&t=423942 &postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
My username is 'Ao' on there so that is me explaining the problem.
To add to that...
Here is another example of what is happening.
I'm thinking from all the answers I got from google its a graphics card problem. Only problem is all the updates are installed, and I can't find anywhere that sells my graphics card to buy a new one. So I need to know which graphics card will work with my system right now?
I've done some tests so you can see my system details. Im clueless with which one to buy so please help.

When I go to color managment in the first tab, devices, where it says profiles associated with this device it is empty, and 'use my settings for this device' is unticked. It says device at the top and mine says 'Display: Generic Pnp Monitor - Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family'.
I did try to set up my monitor and had the .icc file for it in that list that pops up when I tick use my settings and click add, and I think I did set the profile to be the one for my monitor. I can't remember exactly how I did it and where I get that .icc file from, I've been through so many settings and websites trying to fix this.
It's not like I've recently changed any hardware or anything or my monitor, I was on photoshop one minute and it worked fine, then the next it just didn't. It's so strange because all I was doing at the time was using photoshop and I don't understand how it can go from working fine to all these problems with graphics and the banding. It's so confusing.
I can noticeably see banding on that image. It is still a gradient and smooth to a degree, but there is obvious lines of colour differences, and a harsher line on the outside.
Is that smooth for you? For me there is very obvious banding, especially at the top on the white on black.
I just don't know what else to do. I've tried everything I can think of, and spent hours upon hours on google. I've even tried a system restore to put it back to how it was when it was working perfectly, but it's still the same. I tried it on another monitor, just plug and play, and it was the same. Is there an easy way to install a monitor properly so that it should in theory work perfect? Because you're talking about the monitor profile, but with the second one I tried to test it all I did was plug it in and it was still the same. I've even tried it on my tv, and as I remember I think it was less noticeable, but then again that might be because of my tv settings because my tv is quite dark.
Just clueless as to what else to do now. I don't want to go out and buy a new computer for £100's over this, as I don't really have the funds to do so but I need a computer so the only option would be to sell my new iphone that I only got last week! Which I obviously don't want to do. That's how desperate I am to fix this though. -
Problem viewing and printing PDF files in Preview
I have a document that was created in Adobe InDesign (CS4) with a photo that was converted to Grayscale from a CMYK image in Photoshop (CS4).
That document was then Exported from InDesign as a high print quality PDF.
Now when I open the file in Preview the photo appears on the screen as a "Negative" or "Reversed" image. And if I print the document, it too prints as a "Negative/Reversed" image.
I don't know if this matters but if I send this document in Apple Mail it too previews as a "Negative/Reversed" image.
Other that this photo everything else in the document (text and color logos) displays and prints fine.
Any ideas?I have exactly the same problem with PDFs containing bitmaps created by Illustrator CS3 (and CS4) -- the bitmap appears as negative.
It has to do with the compression method used for the bitmaps in the Adobe PDF creation. If it is JPEG or JPEG2000 the problem occurs, if it's ZIP or no compression, the image is fine.
If have reported this to Apple as a bug already.
10.6.2 has NOT fixed this behaviour. -
Save an 16 bits grayscale image in a bmp file
Hello,
I need to save a bmp file using an I16 grayscale picture.
I already did the following VI that saves the picture in bmp but the colors are not good : there is only blue levels.
I think there is a problem with the type of data that feed "array to color image" or with the colorscale but i don't manage to find where.
Hope you can help me.
Tank you.
BenHi
The arraytocolorimage expects U32 because expects a RGB color, try this instead of the "toU32"
