[GUIDE] Use KWIN with GNOME

Hello!
I installed KDE on my [TEST] partition last night and gave it an 'honest' spin and I was impressed by it. I have been a die-hard kind of GNOME guy uptil now but ...
Anyways, since most of the things I liked about KDE were related to KWIN I thought about trying it in my [MAIN] GNOME setup. So I did some googling and then went through with it. I must say I did manage to do what I wanted to so I thought about sharing it with the community. My [MAIN] working install is GNOME 3 with 'Force Fallback' enabled, or GNOME Classic as some call it. Please note that your mileage may vary so don't be disappointed if it doesn't work out the way you want it to.
Here are the steps I took:
1. mounted my [TEST] partition to /media/
2. ran 'sudo pacman -S kdebase-workspace --cachedir /media/[TEST]/var/cache/pacman/pkg' ...#since I had done a fresh install just last night, this saved me about a 100MB of download :-)
3. ran Alt+F2 and 'kwin --replace' just to try it out
4. tried putting 'export WINDOW_MANAGER=kwin' in '~/.profile' but it didn't work ...#i was trying to find a way to use kwin at startup instead of metacity
5. tried creating the key '/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager=/usr/bin/kwin' in gconf-editor but that didn't work either
6. then i thought of something very simple! I installed fusion-icon and put it in startup using gnome-session-properties and then I just had to select the Window Manager as kwin only once. Now fusion-icon automatically loads kwin at log-in. I know it isn't the most elegant way but it works!
7. well almost everything worked with that except the workspaces. The gnome-pager-plugin would only give me one workspace with no option to increase the number of workspaces. I had to logout, log back in using 'KDE Plasma Desktop' session from GDM, logout again and when i logged into GNOME session there was a 'KDE System Settings' menu entry in 'Applications > Other'. Using KDE System Settings > Workspace Behaviour > Virtual Desktops the number of desktops can be changed very conveniently.
Well thats about it. Kwin's composting is really nice in GNOME and I have found a cool Window Decorator called 'deKorator' with many nice themes. Do give it a try and let me know how it goes

generic_ wrote:which is faster? or more configurable
they are both equally configurable. Fluxbox has a text based configuration. Openbox has an xml based configuration -- which is more or less just text - only in a particular format, with start and end tags. As for speed, you will have to use them to find out. They both use just about the same amount of memory. It all comes down to what you feel comfortable with. I have never liked the default Fluxbox themes, but there are loads of themes available which make it look real nice. Openbox too has a bunch of themes, although I tend to stick with the Onyx and Onyx-Citrus from the default ones.
generic_ wrote:Ok but  if i reinstall in the future can I have Hal/fam without gnome
yes. its only a matter of
pacman -S hal fam

  • Using multiple guides to help with layout

    Hi,
I have seen in lots of Muse and InDesign training videos that the designers are using multi guides which run vertically. The guides are set with a wider gap, then a narrow gap, then a wider gap etc. I know this to aid layout and create a more uniform spacing.
Can anyone tell me the method used to create the guides and how the gaps (wide and narrow) are calculated.
    Thanks,
    Matt

In the new site dialog box on the upper right side. The wide ones are the columns and the narrow are the gutters. Hope this helps

  • Software package list for best experience of Arch with Gnome DE.

I have been a long time Ubuntu user but due to power regression issues have to stop using it on new laptop (Thinkpad T420). Arch linux is the obvious choice to try and i did try it this weekend. I like the base and i think i might stay with it. I seems to have far better battery life without any tweaking - low temperature, no fan no TLP no kernel issues so far. I am having problem setting up Arch linux because of its stripped down nature. I guess i will have to read a lot to make it work me.
My question is i might not be having best experience of Arch with gnome. Is their a list or meta package like ubuntu-desktop which will install all/most of the commonly used programs and settings and from their i can customize it? Or is tweaking done in bits and pieces in Arch?
    Thanks.

There is no meta-package like ubuntu-desktop in Arch. You have to build your system the way you find it most comfortable.

1>then i can't promote garnome on this forum??
yeah you can, but not as a solution to gnome related problem in arch. cause this doesn't resolve anything.
2>You don't have to, garnome2.14.2.1(481kb) download the patches and patch it automatically, just change install dir to /usr
(ONLY if you are using console-linux who want gnome a try). of course there is need small arch related patch.(in my experience 0)
eh, i haven't got a clue what this means, putting patches upstream means they will get include in gargnome and upstream releases. i only tried to say we put a lot of our free time in gnome for arch.
2-1>Well said, so choice is the each one's freedom.

  • No scrolling when viewing man pages with Gnome terminal?

    Hi all,
I have just installed Oracle Solaris 11 on x86. For a long time I've used Solaris 9 on SPARC. I like the new OS, but I'm having a problem viewing man pages with Gnome terminal. When I view a long man page, e.g., "man newfs", I don't get a functional scroll bar on the right hand side of the window. And although the space bar works to advance the page, when I reach the end, it doesn't return to the command prompt. It just beeps, prints "END", and I can only exit by closing the window. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Chris Tidy

It does sound like you're using "less" instead of more. When you see the "(END)" prompt you can simply type "q" and it will exit back to the command line prompt making it unnecessary to close the window. See the "less" manual page for more detail on the less command. Under Solaris 9 the paging was done with the "more" command. If you set the PAGER environment variiable to "more" the man page will use more and revert to the behavior you'd be used to with Solaris 9. Less erases the text you've already read when you type that final "q" which is a behavior I don't like. I didn't bother to determine if there is a way to fix that with less, I just went back to more. The choice between "more" and "less" is a personal preference.

  • [Solved] Pulse Audio won't work on newly installed system with Gnome

About a year ago I got a new computer and more or less retired my old one with my first arch install. Recently, I decided I would set it up as a Linux system for my sister. I first updated the computer, which broke it royally (since it was last updated before the /bin symlinking happened) but I eventually got it fixed. However, after doing that, Pulse Audio wouldn't work, then I broke X and decided to do a full reinstall.
Now, on this clean install, Pulse is again not working. I have set up Gnome and gdm to work, and everything works great except Pulse.  The wiki says that Pulse with Gnome 3 requires no extra setup, so I have not edited conf files at all. I have, however, installed "pulseaudio-alsa", which created this conf file:
    # Use PulseAudio by default
    pcm.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    hint {
    show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
    ctl.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    # vim:set ft=alsaconf:
which seems fairly standard. Anyway, I tried removing it and had the same problems. When I have Pulse Audio running and try to play sound, I get the error:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
which is obviously trying for ALSA, or from mplayer:
AO: [pulse] Init failed: Connection refused
    Running "pacmd list" nets me:
    Daemon not responding.
    and pavucontrol gives me:
Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK
when I try to start it.
No pulseaudio commands seem to work (e.g. pulseaudio -k). They don't raise any errors, but also it doesn't have any effect on the server.
The only asound conf file is "/etc/asound.conf", clearing ~/.config/pulse does not fix the issue.
Journalctl does not seem to give anything interesting (Stale PID is the only message when starting Pulse), though admittedly I'm just vgrepping all of journalctl since I don't know how to narrow it down more, nor does the output from pulseaudio -vvvv. There are a lot of errors in pulseaudio -vvvv, but they all appear to be related to loading devices that don't exist, and so I assume not a problem, I can post it if necessary. Sometimes when I kill Pulse the process refuses to go away and I have to reboot in order to clear the process out, but I don't think that's related.
If I kill Pulse or keep it from starting on boot, I can play sound, but only through ALSA, and while I didn't have the problem I expected (I can still play multiple things simultaneously) there's still the issue that the volume buttons in Gnome will no longer work and that the volume levels ALSA reports are basically nonsense to a human being.
I basically just blurbed everything I thought of/found on the wiki or forums, and I'm not really sure where to go from here. It's a fairly old computer, so that could be related, and I'd be willing to dump Pulse if Gnome could integrate well with ALSA, but obviously fixing Pulse would be the preferred option.
Any suggestions on where to look next? I've run out of ideas.
    Thanks.

Wonder if you have a conflict between two audio cards ... for example, I have a friend with some PulseAudio problems caused by conflict between the HDMI audio from his graphics card and his onboard sound. Something would switch PulseAudio to the wrong card and it would just quit after getting itself into a twist. Unsolved, I'm afraid, but have a look at commands such as:
    aplay -l
    pactl list sinks
    pactl stat
(Latter two will need PulseAudio coaxed into life first)
and of course, the Arch wiki.
If there is a conflict, blacklisting kernel modules might also be needed.

  • Help required with Gnome 3 Input Sources

I used CapsLock before gnome 3.6 upgrade all working fine, however new Input Sources broke my system a little bit
    I fixed my CapsLock by dconf-editor org\gnome\desktop\input-sources\xkb-options ['grp:caps_toggle', 'grp_switch', 'grp_led:caps'], but I can't get work
    - language switch indicator not working
    - show-flags does nothing anymore
Any help fit is required because of usability issues

Also, with Gnome 3.6 it's no longer possible to switch layouts with the Caps key. That setting is not available even in gnome-tweak-tool.
I figured out how to do make the settings a lot more flexible, and fix all the layout bugs introduced by 3.6. This is done by configuring everything through setxkbmap and not letting gnome interfere with the settings.
Remove all input sources, and the typing shortcuts from gnome keyboard settings window.
Open dconf-editor and remove everything from "org\gnome\desktop\input-sources\xkb-options". I was not able to set it to nothing, but setting it to ['grp_led:caps'] worked. These 2 steps were needed not to interfere with the config described below.
Install kbdd-git from aur, if you want separate layout for each window.
Create a script with preferred setxkbmap settings. Here is mine, setting Caps to switch languages, and swapping alt and win keys on MacBook.
    #!/bin/sh
    setxkbmap -layout us,ru
    setxkbmap -option 'grp:caps_toggle'
    setxkbmap -option 'altwin:swap_lalt_lwin'
    # kbdd is needed to keep separate layout for each window.
    `which kbdd` && kbdd
Launch gnome-session-properties and add this script to the list.

This happen when I tried to save the project. Any suggestion??
What are the best practices to apply SCM using Toplink?
    Thanks!!
    Matias

Whenever this happens you should be able to do a "file>save as" and save the project in a new directory -- at least you won't be loosing your work.
Basically I think the problem is either that somehow you corrupted the project with checkin/checkout process, or you did not check out a file that the Mapping Workbench is trying to update when you save the project.
10g Mapping Workbench, I have heard, is going to have more intelligence in the area and note ahead of time which files need to be checked out when you save your project. I think a developer preview will be available any day now, keep your eyes peeled to the OTN webpage for TopLink.
The mapping workbench reference guide has a couple pages that talk about how to use it with SCM systems. In TopLink 903 these docs are shipped with TopLink. See page 1-11 for more info.

I think native speakers get that one wrong just as frequently as non-native speakers, if not more often. I hate seeing "definately".
But it's funny when people type "definatly" and MS Office automatically replaces this with "defiantly" ^^. I often get e-mails from colleagues saying things like "We should defiantly do this" ... yes, we should definitely put all our defiance into this .

Actually this particular mistake is made almost exclusively by native speakers (or quasi-native speakers, like people from Hong Kong or India who start learning English at 3 or so). I wondered for a long time how they could possibly confuse "have" and "of", until someone explained that they are not replacing "would have", "could have" etc. with "would of", "could of", but "would've", "could've". Additionally native speakers pronounce "of" approximately as "ev" (the o in "of" is reduced to a schwa if the "of" is not in a position where it is emphasized) ... which is exactly the same or very similar to the way the 've part of "would've", "could've" is pronounced. So for a native speaker this is almost as innocent a mistake as writing "you're" for "your" or "there" for "their".
I hate this error very much. For non-native speakers something like "would of" is extremely hard to parse, because when reading this and pronouncing the words in our heads we do not reduce the "of" to "ev", we read it kind of like "off", and cannot associate this with 've or have.

There is nothing wrong with "a lot" (when properly separated by a space). This is perfectly correct English.

This statement is not correct. One can use "less" for both countable and uncountable nouns. The usage with uncountable nouns even predates the one with countable nouns (9th vs. 14th century). But there are guides that recommend against using "less" with countable nouns and some even claim this to be incorrect.
What I hate very much is when people use "less" when they should use "little". Only non-native speakers do this, of course. But quite often and even in official documents . I find this really cringeworthy. "There is too less time to do this or that" for example. The opposite of much is little, not less! Little cannot only mean small.
A funny mistake, also in an official document: "The information in this document is objective to change." instead of "... subject to change". I think the author must be too object-oriented .

  • Using kwin 5 as lxqt window manager

    Hello,
Is it possibile to point lxqt to a window manager not displayed in it's config gui? It detected Openbox and kwin 4.13 when they were installed, but I'd like to try and use kwin 4.96 from kde-unstable repo since it has less dependencies and is possibly faster, but when I browse for "/opt/bin/kf5/kwin" from lxqt session settings it boots to a blank screen with not even mouse poiter displayed.
Thanks in advance for all help.
    Cheers.

I had the wallpaper issue as well. I know this is a bit late since you mentioned the issue, but I found a solution, and maybe it'll help the next person. I found that I could set the wallpaper if I installed pcmanfm-qt-git ( I don't know if the non-git version works for this or not, I didn't try it ) from the AUR.
