H.264 1080p encoding

Hi,
I'm trying to export a Video from Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5. The Footage is a combination of 720p and 1080p mp4 files (PAL). When I export it with H.264 and the option "HDTV 720p 25 - High Quality" there's no problem to watch the result in VLC Player. When I choose "HDTV 1080p 25 - High Quality" the picture freezes but the sound doesn't.
I got some other 1080p movies with H.264 codec and actually a bigger framerate and there's no problem to watch them. Also the original 1080p footage is visible in VLC Player. So I don't think that my i5 core and 4GB RAM are too bad for the videos. In my opinion the Adobe Encoder does something what my PC doesn't like.
Any ideas?
Thank you,
Jojo

Ok now I found out that the television is able to show the video. But I can't understand why my PC isn't able to do so :/

  • H.264/AVC Encode

    Hiya,
we all know our video guru el_loco whom I have known a long time and who helped me two consecutive years to get MY PHONE. This process is based on him.
    Our N95 8GBs are HW accelerated for 640X480 REZ'd MPEG4/MP4s and 320X240 REZ'd H.264/AVCs.
I personally prefer H.264/AVC over MP4 just because it is bit clearer and well saturation level.
So, I have been trying to find out which converter does its best to convert **bleep** to good H.264s.
So, I use Videora iPod Converter.
    It uses internet occasionally.
When you open it;to avoid so many confusions directly create a new profile.
    Name it anything you like.
    And the settings are:
    It goes in this way:
    Settings>New Profile
    General: Profile Name
    iPod 1-pass-ffPPEGVNB
    Video>General>H.264, Baseline Profile, Level 1.3
(Lets keep General2, and general3 untouched)
    Bitrate:
    ABR
512(it is enough for me, but there is another option-576, if you want more experiment try it, but leave 768 or higher)
    Max resolution:320x240
Audio: as you wish, but 64 AAC-LC is enough for me.
    Thanks.
    Any correction, el_loco welcome.

    Hi,
Just some clarification so I don't continue wasting hours encoding video!
I've been trying for ages to get H.264 working on my phone at 640x480 resolution. So if I'm understanding this post correctly, the N95 can't go above 320x240 for H.264??
Don't get me wrong: MPEG-4 looks awesome on the N95 handset, but H.264 would be much, much better for tv-out...
And can it still support H.264 using widescreen resolutions below 320x240?
    Thanks,
    Jessica

  • Hardware Encoder for H.264?  Encoder for Flash?  Render Farm?

I use Compressor to create H.264 QuickTime files, and have setup Qmaster to use a 8 core cluster to expedite the process, but it is not reliable, and fails quite often. I have a total of 3 Mac Pros in my facility which can all share their resources to help this process be quicker. I was wondering if anyone knew of a hardware encoder that will encode H.264 files very quickly? I have a bid on a project that if granted, I will need to encode a VAST amount of H.264 QuickTime files. Is the best solution a dedicated Mac Pro render farm with a Qmaster setup?
Next, on to the Flash. I currently use Sorenson Squeeze 5 to encode 2 pass VBR flash files, and it takes forever even on my 2.8ghz Octo with 10gb of RAM. Does anyone know of a piece of software or hardware that can expedite this process? Maybe a Flash render farm? Maybe a gnome with a wand?
    Thanks in advance.

Keep your eyes open for when the Matrox CompressHD goes on sale.
While it probably won't be available to use on the job you've just bid on (tentative sale date is May 2009 but who knows if that can be trusted), it otherwise seems like the answer your prayers - it speeds up h.264 and Flash encoding. It will, supposedly, list for $495.
Otherwise, as mentioned, the Turbo264HD is the way to go for now.

  • New H.264/AVC encoding for cameras

    Hi All,
Please let me know, how can we activate H.264/AVC video encoding (new feature in Flash player 11 [H.264/AVC software encoding for cameras]) using actionscript 3 in AIR application, I think, it could not be by default as there are no updates available for flash builder 4.5. So, how can we pick the encoding option. Any new API or methodology for this?
In short, how to publish live stream to FMS using H.264 encoding with actionscript 3. [not with FMLE]

  • H.264 Video Encoding Bug Introduced?

I'm not sure if the issue is related to a fix for a previous bug, or just a new bug introduced for this player.
My original problem was with the reporting of Camera.activityLevel. It only reports 0 and 100 when encoding with H.264 in FP11+ release, Sorenson reports the results properly. I was told it was fixed in this beta, which it does appear to be
    See this post: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3999479
However I now see a new problem in this beta.  My application allows me to change the video settings on my H.264 encoded stream (quality, resolution, fps, etc) during the broadcast. And it works perfectly in FP11+. However, with the beta it now appears to cause problems and be broken.
Changing settings on an existing stream (it looks to be when changing from 320x240 to 640x480) causes streaks of red, green, and blue vertical lines over the  video image and the aspect ratio is wrong. The image appears squished - everything short and fat like mabe it's increaing the width value, but not the height. I'm testing the beta on Windows 32bit IE7 with a Logitech 9000 and on a different machine using Windows 32bit IE8 with a Logitech C910 with the same results.
The camera.width & camera.height properties to seem to report their values properly, but the stream as viewed on the server is definitely not at the correct resolution.
Can anyone verify this or advise? This version looks like it will break my app if released so thankfully it's still a beta.
    Thank you!

OK, in FP11 Beta 2 it appears you have fixed this bug (aspect ratio messed up when switching from 320x240 to 640x480), but now you've reintroduced the Camera.activityLevel bug again. It only reports 0 and 100, this was fixed in Beta 1.
    To summarize:
    FP 11 release
    Camera.activityLevel - broken, only reports 0 and 100
Changing camera size from 320x240 to 640x480 - works
    FP 11.2 beta 1
    Camera.activityLevel - fixed
Changing camera size from 320x240 to 640x480 - broken, turns video from color to black and white and has a strange aspect ratio
    FP 11.2 beta 2
    Camera.activityLevel - broken, only reports 0 and 100
Changing camera size from 320x240 to 640x480 - works
Hopefully you'll have everything working in beta 3.
Do I need to submit a bug report for the Camera.activityLevel bug in FP 11.2 Beta 2?

  • Why would you need an H.264 hardware encoding device?

I am a casual user of Adobe Premiere Pro and just upgraded to CS5.5.   I have been reading threads and someone said that he has problems with the Matrox encoder.  I can import my video and make and DVD so why would you need another hardware solution?

I don't know how it works on Windows but on the Mac it shows up as a QuickTime component. So any application that can export a QuickTime movie (QuickTime Player, Adobe Media Encoder, Compressor, etc) can export to this component and it will utilize the Matrox hardware.
Theoretically you could set your preview file format in Premiere to the Matrox component but I don't know how well it would work.

  • H.264 Player Encoding

OK, I can't believe my eyes that this might actually be true. Are we actually going to be able to encode video in the Flash Player with something besides the old Sorenson Spark codec?  Big kudos to Adobe if that is the case!
Can someone provide an example for this?  I haven't been able to see any documentation on it.
    Thanks!

    Hi Nick,
It seems like you haven't got the authoring environment setup properly for using this feature.  This feature needs to be published to swf 13.
For targeting for swf 13 , here are the few things you can do: (instruction for English version CS5.5)
    1. The playerglobal.swc (the one you downloaded from the incubator site) needs to be located in on ActionScript 3.0 folder. I would create a folder call FP11 and place the playerglobal.swc there. (you should already have FP10.2 which is installed with Flash CS5.5)
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS5.5\Common\Configuration\ActionScript 3.0\FP11\playerglobal.swc
    2. Then you will need to make a xml for new FlashPlayer11 to point the Flash to use it. It locates at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS5.5\Common\Configuration\Players . You can copy any of the existing one and modify it.
    Sample:
    <players>
      <player id="FlashPlayer11" version="13" asversion="3">
       <name>Flash Player 11</name>
       <path builtin="true"/>
       <path platform="WIN">Device Central/adcdl.exe</path>
       <path platform="MAC">Device Central/adcdl</path>
       <playerDefinitionPath as2="$(UserConfig)/Classes/FP10;$(UserConfig)/Classes/FP9;$(UserConfig)/Classes/FP8;$(Use rConfig)/Classes/FP7" as3="$(AppConfig)/ActionScript 3.0/FP11/playerglobal.swc" />
    3. Launch Flash and create files, File > Publish Settings, you will see the Flash Player 11 which you just added.  Use it to publish the script.
You can check if your swf is publishing to swf 13 by have those line in the code:
    // first frame
    loaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.INIT, init); function init(event:Event):void {
          trace("SWF " + loaderInfo.swfVersion);

  • H.264 Anamorphic encoding and clean aperture

Recent versions of Compressor support non square pixel or "anamorphic" encoding the same way DVDs have been encoded for years. That is, video is encoded at 720x480 and during playback resized to the correct size (640x480 for 4:3 and 853x480 for 16:9). I think this is the best way to encode non square pixel video originating from DV or Digibeta since it preserves all of the original resolution without having to do any kinds of resizing. I hear this is how Apple delivers a lot of its new SD features on iTunes. My question, where is the clean aperture support?
It is a very common misconception that to convert 720x480 video to square pixel one simply needs to resize to 640x480. The correct size is in fact 655x480. Apple implemented the correct resize procedures starting with QuickTime 7.1, they can be found under the "Presentation" tab in "Movie Properties." A lot of professionally sourced standard def content (from a Spirit telecine for example) contains active picture only within 704x480 pixels of the 720x480 frame, the rest being blanking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nominalanalogueblanking). When the entire 720x480 (or 486) is viewed on a computer display, thin black lines (approximately 8 pixels wide each) appear on the right and left sides of the video. Apple supports aperture settings on a lot of its intermediate codecs, such as DV, ProRes422 and Uncompressed 4:2:2. A good way to see this in action is to go to the Movie Properties of a DV clip, click the Presentation tab and cycle through the various "Conform aperture to:" settings. "Encoded Pixels" will do just that, show the video at 720x480, "Production" will convert to square pixels and result in a frame size of 655x480, while "Clean" will crop off the extra pixels off the sides resulting the standard frame size we all recognize, 640x480.
Now having said all that, encoding 720x480 video to 640x480 in Compressor seems to disregard all concepts of clean aperture. That is, you are left with a 640x480 image WITH the extra padding on the sides, not only is this annoying but is also WRONG, as the AR is actually slightly distorted. And if you try to crop the 16 pixels manually, you end up with an offbeat resolution of 626x480, not cool. Using anamporphic encoding in Compressor also plays back at 640x480 with no cropping and Clean/Production aperture settings being the same. So my question is, why this wrong and highly overlooked behavior?
By the way, the concept of clean aperture having existed since virtually the birth of digital video has only recently been widely recognized, with giants such as Adobe implementing it in software such as After Effects as late as CS4 (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103906c6dea -7f3aa.html) And I quote: "After Effects CS3 and earlier used pixel aspect ratios for standard-definition video formats that ignore the concept of clean aperture. By not accounting for the fact that clean aperture differs from production aperture in standard-definition video, the pixel aspect ratios used by After Effects CS3 and earlier were slightly inaccurate. The incorrect pixel aspect ratios cause some images to appear subtly distorted."
How could this have happened and continues to be ignored to this day!

  • Encode 1080p with Compressor coming soon?

    Hi,
Is there any rumors out there, that Compressor in a not so distant future will be able to encode to h.264 1080p for use on HD DVD/Blue Ray?
I sure hope Apple will implement that feature, since Compressor as of now only does up to 720p. FCP imports 1080p material using the HD Decklink Card, but would like to be able to send it along for use on a HD DVD as well.
    Best,
    Peter

Hello, I wondered if you ever solved this problem.  I've been using my blu-ray burner for months now just fine and the exact same thing happened to me.  It burns dvds and cd-rs just fine but when I use Compressor, it keeps spitting the blu-ray media out and repeatedly asks: "Please insert the media to burn the disc."
I also tried Disk Utility and it won't burn blu-rays either.  If it was the drive, I doubt it would be able to burn dvds so I'm not sure what to do.
    Thanks!

  • Encoding H.264 @ 640 x 480 for iPod with Avidemux?

    Hi All,
I'm new to this forum, so please be gentle!
QuickTime/iTunes don't support XviD decoding on Windows, meaning I need to use a third-party tool for encoding my XviD videos to iPod. I am hoping that somebody on this forum has experience with H.264 iPod encodes to contribute towards getting mine working.
I've been using Avidemux 2.5.1 on Windows XP SP3 for other work very successfully and on paper it certainly seems capable of creating 640x480 H.264 encodes for my iPod.
The iPod does play 640x480 MPEG-4 ASP (XviD) and 320x240 MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) encodes, both made by Avidemux. It also plays sample Apple files converted to 640x480 H.264 by iTunes (I've checked their format).
However, for the life of me I haven't been able to create a compliant 640x480 H.264 encode with Avidemux. No matter what options I've turned off and/or tuned down and no matter how low I've taken the bitrate, no 640x480 H.264 encode has worked so far with Avidemux.
My iPod's specs are at http://support.apple.com/kb/SP26 and I suspect that the "Low-Complexity" Baseline Profile is at the heart of my problems (potentially also the AAC-LC audio, although I guess then my other successful encodes with Avidemux/AAC wouldn't have worked either?). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264 only mentions a Constrained Baseline Profile, and I'm not sure whether that's the same thing as the "Low-Complexity" mentioned in the above iPod spec.
Has anybody succeeded in making iPod-compliant 640x480 H.264 encodes with Avidemux, and if so, may I please have the X264 encoder settings for Avidemux 2.5.1 from you?
    Many thanks,
    Francois

I'd like to report that our problem has been solved! What I had not seen before was the setting in QT to use the "Baseline" setting. That made all the difference.
For others, the setting can only be found by doing the following:
Use the Movie to MPEG-4 setting
    File format: MP4
    Video format: H.264
This will give a "Video Option" button. Change to "Baseline"
That's the key. After that, any settings can be used, such as data rate, frame rate, etc.
    Here's what I now use:
(Under the Video Options button) Restrict Profile to Baseline
    Encoding mode: Best quality (multi-pass)
    Video format: H.264
    Data rate: 75 kbps
    Optimized for download
    Image size 320x240 QVGA
    Frame Rate: 15fps
    Key frame automatic
    Audio: AAC-LC
    Data rate: 48
    Channels: Mono
    Output Sample rate: 44.100
    Encoding Quality: Best
I want to thank all those who gave us input both here and in other discussions!

  • AIR h.264 encoding support

Is h.264 encoding in AIR at the roadmap of Adobe? I know Adobe is working hard on delivering the requested features, and thanks for the Echo Cancellation. It works great. H264 is now in flash player, but can we expect classes H264VideoStreamSettings, H264Profile, H264Level be available on the AIR in the future as well? I can't think of any technical issues regarding this, but is there any legal issues? It would be very important for us to know, to make a business decisions now.

  • Premiere CC and/or Media Encoder audio bad renders

Occasionally, but not always, when I export a timeline to Media Encoder queue, the video renders out with no audio.
I have not found a repeatable way to replicate this, but when it happens, it really blows up my workflow.
    Typically I:
Import a ProRes 1080 clip into a fresh timeline, and only trim down the ends. Audio and Video playback great in premiere. I then, without changing anything, export to media encoder queue in h.264 1080p OR 720p (vimeo preset).
The queue runs and bang, video file with no audio.
My extended workflow is as such - once the h.264 file has arrived in the folder (it is a watchfolder), there are presets set to create OTHER Files - wav for CD, mp3 for podcast, DVD for distro, mp4 for podcast. So, as you can see, it snowballs into a trainwreck. I would also automate/schedule the podcast postings, but obviously I can't rely on media encoder/premiere to do it's job.
Has anyone experienced any lack of audio render issues? Is it tied to hardware at all, or is it just freak randomness? I even got to point to where I reboot the machine right before each original capture begins, but the error is always in the first render out of premiere.
I have checked for any muted tracks and such, and there are none. As I said, it is VERY random. For instance, this week, I dropped the capture into a timeline, exported as usual, and got a bad render. Did it again, this time moving the audio down a track. Still a bad render. Rebooted the Mac, tried it all again, and finally got a working render. This is the first time it has happened TWICE in a row, and I'm getting tired of it, as these renders are fairly long.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    - Ben

Ben, I'm having the same issue.  Never had it before yesterday.
I'm editing on CC with R3D's.  I have 8 tracks of audio.  When I'm exporting (either through Encoder or through Premier) I'm getting a final product that has no audio, and in its place a loud clicking sound.  I performed a number of reboots and got it to export once.  But I've tried dozen's of times now and can't get audio to export through this sequence.
When I go to render the project I'm getting an "Error Compiling Movie.  Unknown Error" message.   I suspect that's related.  Not sure what's happening.  I'm going to keep testing.  I'll let you know if I discover anything.  But it is VERY FRUSTRATING:(  Deadlines are looming.

  • Premier Pro CC and Media Encoder crashing on long file export.

Please forgive the length of this inquiry. But it is complicated and has a lot of variables.
I have an hour long mixed format timeline both Red 3K footage and Black Magic ProRes 1080P footage that I want to make a DVD from and it takes forever and crashes half way through. I have tried doing it every way possible and the only way I was able to get even a partial export was using the "MPEG 2 DVD" export option in Premier CC. It goes fast at first telling me it will take about 2 hours but even though it starts quickly doing about 15 fps it slows down to less than 1 fps and finally just stops and crashes my Cuda Core enabled Macbook Pro Laptop.
I really don't know who to ask about this since there are so many different variables. I never had a problem like this on my MBP with PP6 on a 4K timeline exporting to DVD or Blue Ray or to H-264 or Even Prores. But I wasn't mixing formats either. But on this project the first 20-30 minutes of footage goes through fine in a couple of hours but something seems to be bogging down the system on longer projects. My work around was to break the project up into multiple exports and combining them on the DVD timeline but I can't do this on every project. I thought maybe it was a corrupted clip somewhere in the timeline but when I broke the timeline up into several parts I had no problems.
I did notice a dramatic variance in the time it took to export footage based on the sequence settings. A one minute timeline comprised Red 3K footage and ProRes 1080P footage Here are some sample export results:
From a Red raw 3K timeline 2880x1620  with 1080P Prores footage upscaled 150%)
    to .m2v Mpeg 2 720x480 format    1:48 Minutes ***
    to .mov  Prores 422HQ  1080P                         22 Minutes
    to .mov H.264  1080P                    22 Minutes
    to .m2v Mpeg 2 1080P                                                22 Minutes
From a 1080P timeline Prores footage at 100%  (Red footage downscaled to 67%)
    to .m2v Mpeg 2 720x480 format                         13 Minutes
    to .mov  Prores 422HQ 1080P                             13 Minutes
    to .mov H.264  1080P                                                             14 Minutes
    to .m2v Mpeg 2 1080P                                                            14 Minutes
Since I am going to DVD,  I chose the fastest option  Red to m2v Mpeg 2 720x480 format which only took 1:48 per minute. Why? I have no idea. Maybe someone here knows the answer. But again these numbers are for a ONE MINUTE clip when I tried to convert the whole hour timeline to  the 720x480.m2v DVD File the Red timeline froze my computer after several hours even though I had set sleep mode to “Never” and turned the display off manually and I had to convert it in multiple chunks. In 20-30 minute chunks it did go fast about 1:48 per minute like the test indicated. But I would like to be able to convert the whole hour and not to have to try to stitch the clips together in my DVD authoring program.
I don’t want to have to avoid using multiple formats on the same timeline or waste time transcoding everything to the same format.
Can anyone give me any suggestions as to why the computer is crashing or bogging down in long exports and what timeline settings I should be using?
I have plenty of room on my Scratch Disk and 8 Gig of RAM and according to my Activity Monitor during the export process  have about 800 Meg of System Memory during export but the CPU Usage is 98% and in my Activity Monitor I see under “Process Name” ImporterRedServer flashing up at the top of the list about every second during export.
Why .720x480 mpeg DVD setting is so much faster than all the other export codecs?
And if there are any other settings I can use to get higher speed exports in HD? 14x1 seems a little slow especially since every time it crashes I have to start over.

    Hi,
Since a long time I did not encounter the crash of Media encoder with
    long file export.
But I take care of a lot of details before the export :
    - clean up Media cache and Media Cache Files within PP CS6 and/or CC,
    - delete all render files with Preview Files,
    - rendering of sequences until the rendering is completed,
    - PP CS6 and/or Pp CC opened during export to AME and/or Encore CS6,
I guessed to leave Adobe but this company remains the last with a
serious authoring software (Encore CS 6).
    I tested :
    - Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro X, both are very good software but
no really authoring software for these video editing softs.
Th only way is to "flood" Adobe with "bug reports" and "wish forms"
which are not very easy to use.
And also to call the Adobe support day by day until they send they
    escalate the bug.

  • Help Please: Glitches occurring with H.264 export

Let me premise this post by acknowledging that I have little experience in the dslr video world. I'm trying to change that.
I shot video for two fireworks shows this year as an experiment. I groomed the clips in After Effects (noise reduction, contrast, saturation, sharpness, etc) and then exported the files as H.264 1080p 24fps from After Effects. These files look fine - no glitches. Next, I compiled the whole shebang in Premiere Pro. I can't remember the exact export settings I used in Premiere Pro, but I selected the YouTube HD 1080p 24fps preset and then clicked the check box next to 'Render at Highest Quality' (or something like that).
When the final video was done exporting, I watched the whole thing. Everything looked really great except there were approximately 5 instances where white glitches would appear on the screen for 2-3 seconds (see images below). The first screenshot is the frame before the glitch appears. The second one is the first frame of the glitch. The third one is just before the glitch goes away. These glitches do not show up when I preview the video in premiere pro and they do not exist in the source files. It seems like these glitches occur at the brightest moments in the fireworks show.
What is this a result of? Should I select different export settings? Thank you in advance.

    Hi Stephen,
Just wanted to tell, that I have the exact same problem!
Made a thread about it as well, and made a bug report. It is so, so, so frustrating. For me, that is not the only glitches. I have grey backgrounds where it should be black, stuttering sequences and stuff like that.
Everything is smooth and wonderful in edit, but after encoding - in Premiere og AME, it f**ks up.
Right now i'm trying to encoding using software only to see if it fixes the problem.
    Have you fixed this?
