H.264 Settings

After finally getting DVD's to rip and transfer to the iPod, I was trying different settings. Tried the H.264 and it ripped fine and worked perfectly in iTunes. However, could not get to the iPod. I am sure it is a setting or two I need to adjust. Can anyone help me with proven settings. I did try this Link: http://howto.diveintomark.org/ipod-dvd-ripping-guide/ which was VERY helpful in getting DVD's to rip. The setting for H.264 didn't work for me in regards to getting the movie to iPod.The quality of H.264 is fantastic! Would love to get it to the iPod

I'm using Handbrake 0.7. I've had no problems getting h.264 into my iPod. Settings have been default or close to it... I don't usually change much; I've tried bit rates of 400 and 768k; picture sizes of 480 and 320 (w); 1-pass and 2-pass. It all works, but I understand other (older) versions don't work as well.

  • Media Encoder H.264 settings

I hope someone can help me with this. I created a video in CS4 in HDV, I  need to output using the following specs my client has asked for:
    fullscreen video at 1920 x 1080 resolution,
    Quicktime h.264 - best quality / multipass.
    Sound is 48 KHz 16b.
They are using FCPro Apple ProRes 422 for compression.
Do I use the H.264 Blu-ray setting for output? Any help on what the  setting should be is greatly appreciated - or do I need to get more info  from the client.
I've never had to do this type of output before and I want to make sure I give them the correct format.
    Thanks

    Hi,
When you get the export done and if you like it could you put your settings up here ( maybe a screenshot of settings for video ) and share it with us? Others might profit later as they search this database for answers.  Thanks...

  • Compressor 4.1.1 ignoring H.264 settings

    Hi there,
Since updating to Mavericks, it's been a hassle to use Compressor 3.5 using multiple cores through qmaster. I managed to get it up and running using terminal commands, but this workflow isn't ideal. So I decided to use Compressor 4.1.1 instead.
Now, my problem is that Compressor seems to ignore the video quality setting in the H.264 tab. It doesn't matter if I choose Least or Highest quality or something in between. The result is always a file that seems to be encoded using the Highest Quality.
My source file is a QT reference file exported from Avid 7.0. So one QT file that points to the MXF video and to a Wave audio Mixdown.
I'm running 10.9.2 and Compressor 4.1.1. Compressor 3.5 and FCP 7 are also on my system.
    Any ideas ?
    Thx,
    Alain

Yeah that's what I've been trying, but Compressor ignores the Quality slider when encoding to H.264. I am using the Quicktime export setting, and not the H.264 for Apple devices setting
The results of encoding a 2 minute 1080p clip using the settings on the screenshot gave me a 296Mb file. When I move the slider all the way to the right I get the same result.
I tried encoding to MP4, luckily the datarate slider does make a difference.
So apparently the bug is related to the Quickime Export setting.

  • H.264 Settings for Darwin Streaming Server

I would like to encode H.264 for unicast streaming delivery off of the Darwin platform. We've done a lot of testing and the .mov encodes that we've been putting out at 768kbps (hinted for streaming) have been serving quite slow and choppy off of anything other than a T1 connection.
I've seen some H.264 .mp4 encodes at 350kbps that look incredible streaming but we cannot duplicate this size and quality for some reason with our own video.
At 480x270, or something around those dimensions, I was wondering what the best bit rate and format would be for streaming delivery off of the Darwin platform?
For Darwin we are running 5.5.5 and we are using Compressor 3.0.1. All testing is being done with Quicktime 7.2 on Mac Pro machines over various types of connections.
    Thanks,
    Mike

After looking through the apple manual I found this:
Resetting the Streaming Server Admin User Name and Password
If you forget the Streaming Server Admin user name and password, you can reset them.
To reset the user name and password:
1 Log in to the server computer as root, open a terminal, and type the following:
    qtpasswd someUserName
where someUserName is a name of your choice.
2 Follow the prompts by entering the administrator user name and a password you want to
    assign to the user someUserName.
3 Using a text editor, modify the /Library/QuickTimeStreaming/Config/qtgroups file.
For Windows, modify the c:\Program Files\Darwin Streaming Server\qtgroups file. For other
supported platforms, modify the /etc/streaming/qtgroups file. Modify the file so that the user
name you just created or modified is included in the group Admin, as follows:
    admin: someUserName
4 Save the file as ordinary text (not .rtf or any other file format).

  • Which H.264 settings for Blu ray with mixed assets

    Hi,
I am still learning with the different options that I can chose in Encore for transcoding an asset but I am not sure what to chose.
I created a project in PP which uses the following formats 1080i/25,1080i/50, 720p/23,976 and 1080p/25.
the main scenes in PP is in 1080i/25. Most clips are documenting sports or moving objects.
If I use the automatic transcoding setting in Encore, it will be transcoded in 1080i/25 but is this really good? Although I am in a PAL region I think, for Blu Ray, I could also use NTSC settings like 1080p/25.
    What shall I do?

  • Compression settings for H.264

Can anyone recommend some settings for making making H.264 video intended for delivery on the web at 640x380?
    Thanks.

    Heya Rick,
So I was looking at the H.264 settings in Compressor and it would seem as though the highest bitrate is 1500 kps so guess you can't do bit rate between 2000 and 2500 k/bits like another poster recommended by using Compressor for Apple Devices settings. Also there isn't much control over the audio of the h.264 file in Compressor whereas QT conversion from FCP allows you to select a mono audio file with a lower khz rate and render quality.
The difference between selecting stereo vs. mono will be the difference between 1/2 or twice the filesize for your audio file which will absolutely affect your total filesize but make little to no difference in your viewed file intended for web viewing. Take a look at a standalone Stereo track AAC 44.100 kHz 192 kbps that is 5 mins long and you're looking at about 5 MB file just for the audio!!! Cut that to mono and drop the frequency and bitrate and that 5 mb audio file will be about 1MB.
I have always used QT conversion from FCP and have only just now had the opportunity to look at the h.264 settings in Compressor and judging from initial impressions I would go with QT conversion from FCP.
For the video you mention I would just go with export using QT conversion from FCP. For video settings use automatic keyframes with an automatic datarate with quality set to Medium. Best quality multi-pass encode. For sound settings use Linear PCM Mono channel 32 khz rate and Faster Quality render setting. That should give you a nice, small file size that will look and sound good enough for sit down interview video between 3-5 mins. in length.
Also remember that the h.264 can be used with a Flash player instead of QT player so those without Quicktime can view the file without having to install the QT player. You can use something like the JW Player from http://LongTailvideo.com or simply change the extension of the compressed h.264 to .flv and use it with any Flash Player above 9.0

  • Error -35 on Quicktime h.264 export

When exporting to h.264, from either compressor or Quicktime player, it fails and gives a "Quicktime error -35". I cannot find this error code anywhere, and have no idea what it means, or how to fix it.
    Thanks.

Video source and h.264 settings don't matter, it still fails every time. But for the record, I'm going from DVCPRO to h.264. It ONLY fails if encoding to h.264. I can encode the same video to the same place on the disk with a different codec, and it works just fine.

  • Quicktime Broadcaster H.264 Configuration

    Hey,
Does anyone have any knowledge of how to configure H.264 settings in Quicktime Broadcaster?
The specs on www.apple.com/quicktime/broadcaster/specs.html say it supports both H.264 Baseline profile and H.264 Main profile, but the software only gives "H.264" as an option (the "Options" button greys out when you select H.264), and it is putting out a H.264 "Main profile" stream.
Does anyone know how to switch this over to a H.264 "Baseline profile" stream?
I'm running QT Broadcaster 1.5.3 under MacOS 10.5.7 with Quicktime Pro 7.6.2.
    Thanks!

After many conversations with Apple representatives, I don't believe Baseline encoding is possible in QuickTime Broadcaster at this point, sorry. I would be interested in this feature too! Too bad they don't seem terribly concerned with updating the software.
In the forums for Wowza Streaming Server (link: http://www.wowzamedia.com/forums/showpost.php?p=20815&postcount=29), someone has claimed success using VLC to live encode to baseline profile, using the following settings:
    venc=x264{keyint=25,nocabac,level=3.0,qpmax=36,qpmin=10,me=hex,merange=24,subme= 9,qcomp=0.6},vcodec=x264,vb={VB},width={SIZEW},height={SIZEH},acodec=mp4a,ab={AB},channels=2
Haven't had a chance to try it out myself, but VLC is certainly flexible enough to accomplish this. (Whether it do so reliably is another matter...)

  • HDV to H.264 color loss

Anyone know why when I convert HDV to H.264 Quicktime media, that the color saturation washes out significantly? This appears to happen in Compressor with whatever H.264 settings I choose, however it doesn't happen going to MPEG 4.
    Thanks,

Premiere is not the best tool for deinterlacing. You might get better results if you leave it as is and let your TV or PS3 do the upscaling.

  • How to use H.264 footage with uncompressed 8bit PAL footage

    Hi
I have a FCP project with the uncompressed 8 bit PAL settings and FPS is 25 as per PAL standards.
Now i have some 2 minutes of footage fron Canon 7D with H.264 settings. Frame size is 1920*1080 and FPS is 24. I was trying various options to use the footage but failed. already done with various exports like making a new projects of the H.264 settings and export the file as PAL setting with 720*576 and FPS 25, but the result is really bad. Video is shaking and pixels are damaged. Pan shots and other moving shots lost their quality totally.
I even installed an EOS codec, CE1110X, but dont know if i am using it the way it should be or not.
I even tried to export the footage from Premiere CS5 but the result was even bad.
    What to do? Please help.
    Thanx
    Pawan Sharma

    hi
just tried converting the footage with mpeg streamclip but the problem remains. Jitters are there and pixels are damaged. Details of the shots are in poor quality. I think the main reason behind this is the source footage is on 24 FPS and i am trying to convert it to 25 FPS. What you think? If this could be the possible reason?
I will get the full card structure in few hours and try the Log and Transfer procedure and get back to share the experience.
    Shane,
thanks a lot for the Log and Transfer tutorial, with the help of that tutorial now i can easliy transfer the clips, once i get the full card structure.
In the mean time if you guys can suggest something else please share.
I am working on a uncompressed 8 bit PAL project.
    Thanks

  • [Premiere Elements 10] Export to computer as h.264?

So I've been using the trial version of CS5 for a while now. After re-installing my OS every month to get this, I decided to invest some money in the cheaper Elements range. However I used to export as h.264 to my computer. h.264 is the best for the quality:compression ratio. Unfortunately I am having trouble finding this option in Elements 10. Is it even there? When I click share to computer I can see the MPEG options but the compressions offered in this are pretty... well bad, when you compare it to h.264. I dont want to export as wmv or avi... although avi makes little sense to me too as an the avi format is a container format... So what exactly is it compressing to? XD
Anyways main point is, can you compress to h.264 and export the file to your computer like you can in CS5. Or is it limited to burning on blu ray? I think if the algorithm is there, then it should be able to be used in whatever way the user pleases.
On an unrelated note, Elements 10 looks nicer than CS5 but it handles a lot slower. Is this normal? It seems like the program cant keep up with what im doing sometimes, when in CS5 it was all smooooth.
    Thanks for your time.
    James

You can also get to H.264 settings via Share> Computer> AVCHD. This uses the MainConcept codec - you can adjust settings if you go into Advanced...

I know the setting is in there to render h264 out of AE, but it is very inefficient. After Effects renders a frame at a time and adds it to the end of a movie. h264 encoding looks at blocks of video an determines the areas that can be discarded. This helps the final product maintain a smaller file size. Rendering h.264 straight out of AE won't give you the smallest file size or the best results.
My recommendation is to either render out a high resolution movie and then encode it to h.264 using Adobe Media Encoder, Episode, or ffmpeg. If you are just looking to save a step, you might try rendering the the video using the h.264 settings in Adobe Media Encoder.

  • H.264 encoding time saver

I don't know if this has been discussed elsewhere, and I don't know if everyone reading this will go, "well duh!" but I discovered something last week that made a big difference in how long it takes my system to encode H.264 files.
I have a lot of clients who want their videos on YouTube, which is why I create a lot of H.264 files.  Usually, in my Media Encoder H.264 settings, I select the YouTube SD preset (all my video is SD), which works very well.  But by making a simple tweak to the preset values, I cut the encoding time in better than half.  The preset has a frame rate value of 30 FPS.  Changing that value to match my video (29.97 FPS) made all the difference in the world.
I have a 3:12 project that consists of simple cuts.  No transitions and no effects.  With the standard YouTube H.264 preset, this took 5:12 to encode.  By changing the frame rate to 29.97, the encoding only took 2:11!
    J. D.

thanks for info !  Usually it is kinda normal that the workflow is just like you said...your project settings match the video "source" material. and the export matches the project settings ( as much as possible, as of course some things change ( size of frame ...maybe you have to go to interlaced or progressive etc) ..but generally frame rate is kept the same....
once you get your settings good ( adjusting the default preset values ) you can then "save" that as your own new preset...customized...and then you dont have to keep changing it...you could label it MYH264-YOUTUBE-SD...or something ...

  • Deinterlacing QT files converted to H.264

I recently tried converting a DV file to H.264 to save on space, however, the video seems to be 'interlaced'--i.e. lines of the video seem to be slightly skewed from each other, namely on the moving image part of the video. Am I missing a setting? (I know that Handbrake as a 'deinterlace' setting, but this is a pure DV file I have imported from my digital video camera).
For reference, I have set the H.264 settings to:
    Frame Rate: Current
    Key Frames: Auto
    Quality: High
    Data Rate: 2000 kbits/sec
    Use current size
I did a search on this discussion group on deinterlacing, and found some message, but they are saying something like "thanks for your tips on deinterlacing in this newsgroup" and I cannot seem to find the original tips. So, my apologies if this is a repeat question for some of you.
PowerMac G4 Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   RAM: 1+ gig

So, there is no setting in QT to do this?
...actualy there is a QT bug that can be used to deinterlace video:
It works at least with DV files this way: if the clip is scaled from its native resolutions AND if its playback setting is deinterlaced, THEN the exported DV is deinterlaced (or field blended).
    why this interlacing happens
Interlacing makes smoother motion on a TV possible. With interlaced material you get PAL/NTSC 50/60 fields per second while with deinterlaced/progressive material you get only 25/30 frames per second and the movements are jerkier with that "film look" some people for some strange reason like...
