H.264 Video Export Quality Options - Why no difference?

Hi all, first post so go easy on me!
I've been playing with the various options for exporting videos to H.264 as the original files are just too large. Lightroom 5.5 gives the impression that each quality option should result in a different output file size:
Max: "As close to source as possible"
High: "High quality, but with a possible reduction in video bit rate"
Medium: "Suitable for web sharing and higher end tablets"
Low: "Suitable for mobile devices"
I tested the output for a source file with a resolution of 1280x720, 30.000fps, bit rate 512kbps file size of 369 MB and got the following results:
Source
Resolution: 1280x720
Bit Rate: 512kbps
File Size: 369 MB
Max / High / Medium - all identical
Resolution: 1280x720
Bit Rate: 253kbps
File Size: 108 MB
Low
Resolution: 480x270
Bit Rate: 125kbps
File Size: 19 MB
Any reason why the Max, High and Medium options would all be identical? The only thing I could think of is that the higher options are for higher quality videos, and for movies taken with my compact digital, there isn't enough scope to differentiate between the various options.
This is still disappointing as the difference between 108 MB and 19 MB is quite substantial. I'd hope the High and Medium options would offer alternatives in between.
Not having used Lightroom for long, I was unsure whether I've just encountered a bug or whether this is normal behaviour and if so, why this is the case. I've looked for options to change the default resolutions for the different quality levels but it looks to be hard-coded as I couldn't find a setting.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I think you need to start with a higher-resolution and bitrate file to start with to see more variation between the higher settings.
I say this because I just tried a 1920x1080x22Mbps MP4 video file from my phone and Max and High are the same, but Medium steps down to 1280x720x8Mbps and Low is 480x270x1Mbps.
I expect you’d have variation between all the quality settings if you started with a 4K video file.

  • Horrible video export quality

First off, I'm not the most tech savvy person out there. However, I have a really simple 8 minute video that i shot with my Canon SX20 IS. It's a still camera but it also shoots HD video. Anyway, the video looks great in imovie but when i export it it's pixelated and just awful quality. I've tried exporting it using different sizes, and all the different export options it has, nothing seems to work. This video is for a very dear friend of mine and I'm leaving to see them really soon, so i need to get this video up to par and into idvd as soon as possible. if anyone can help me to fix this problem it will be greatly appreciated.
Also, am i going to have a similar problem with idvd? like will ti look fine until i decide to burn it onto the disk?

your cam records in 720p, which is AVCHD-lite, which is not supported by iM08 (=you posted in the im vers08 section of this board). How did you import? is 08 correct? or, perhaps, 09/11?
in Share, choose 'Export Movie'/Apple-E, choose the 'HD' called option, which generates a 720p movie with a more than acceptable quality.
keep in mind: 720p is 1280x720 .. watched 'full screen' on some iMac means 'zoom'/scaling, the impression of lost quality. to judge quality, always watch in 'native' resolution.

  • FCP always crashes on H.264 1080 export... why?

Hi. I am having problems editing 1080 video in FCP 5.1.4
    My source video: H.264, 1920×1080, 29.97 fps, 78.09 Mbps
I am trying to export this video with a single watermark into:
    H.264, 1920×1080, 29.97 fps, 6.5 Mbps
Every single time I hit export, it pops up and estimates 4+ hrs to save, so I let it go. But after about an hour in FCP just crashes completely.
    Why does this happen?
What settings should I have FCP set as for this type of export? Currently the sequence and project properties are just set to the default 1080i HDV preset.
Can some one point me in the right direction please.

I placed it up on pastebin here: http://pastebin.com/TiRUVeew
The crash doesn't show up in AME's logs. It actually happens with this 240p export no matter the source. I've reinstalled PPro CS6, and still no luck. Thanks a lot for helping!

  • QT PRO high quality option, why not default after UPDATE?

I just installed the new QT Security Update, and now my QT quality for my videos is quite sub-standard across the board. I first noticed it using iTunes watching some videos. I then opened a movie with QTPro full screen, and the screen was pixillated and grainy compared to before the update. I went to movie properties info pane, and noticed that the "use high quality when avail." option was NOT selected (under movie properties). I clicked this, and the quality improved. I then had to SAVE the movie (with dual extention including .mov).
QT used to have this selected as default and I never had to re-save the video. I went under QT preferences (not under movie properties), and made sure "use HQ video setting when avail" was checked--it was.
So, I have about 100 movies that I now have to RE-SAVE after checking the properties HQ box? This is quite tedious and cumbersome. Is there a way to go back to OLD settings? Should I uninstall QT Update and reinstall? Or is this the method mac is now advocating as standard protocol?
I love my "easy" to use mac and QT. But this seems out of norm for QT software. HELP?!
iMac 17inch flat-panel PPC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   QT pro, latest software updates

I've noticed that the mpg-4 videos are most dramatically effected. My iTunes downloaded TV/movie/videos are all fine. I do not notice a change in quality checked or unchecked with those specific formats.
Yah, I know it shouldn't have caused an issue, but quite coincidental as I've been using QT for over 2 years now and through all the updates and improved versioins never had a problem.
I guess stranger things have happened and it could be circumstance! LOL!

  • Export quality grainy for TEXT / TITLE

    Hello there,
Am kind of a newb, but am getting used to the basics and am happy with the video export quality. For some reason, the TITLE objects are coming out grainy, even when viewed at 100% size. I tried different output types, bitrates, changed fonts, font size, position, etc. Put black background behind, removed background, no matter what am still getting the fonts looking crappy once exported.
Some screenshots of what I see in the Premiere Pro output preview / workspace, and then a second shot showing the resulting output (same result in diff bitrates, just chose one as example)
    In Pro:

    Exported:
    http://fms.whoajack.com/textIssue02.png
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Greg

DV is far from the best codec for text. But the real problem is that you're using FCP's built-in text generators. Instead, use the Boris Title 3D and Boris Title Crawl generators. They produce much cleaner vector-based text and have a ton of more options for creativity.

  • Why does YouTube on Firefox offer so few quality options even if the video can be viewed in higher quality on Chrome or when it is embeded?

I've noticed that YouTube only offers three quality options for some videos when viewed on the video's page (240p, 360p, and 720p) even while the offered video elsewhere is significantly higher. One example of this is the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvY5irWC7kA (/u/aygoman of /r/Oman); when viewed in Chrome or when embedded in a page (such as through the RES addon), the video options are more verbose: 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 2160p.
While I do not typically view above 720p, sometimes I would like the option to view a video in either 1080p or 480p and cannot for some unknown reason.

Are you using the YouTube HTML5 media player or the Flash player?

  • My Videos Export in Terrible Quality

I have a video project I'm working on, I've finished it and went to export as .wmv and .mov . When it finished exporting, I watched the videos, the quality was terrible. Any part of the video that had a lot of motion would look "liney". I've posted the videos so you can see what I mean. I realize that there are sections of the video that are un-rendered, I've taken care of that.

How can I fix the problem, it's not when I import it because I use iMovie 6 to import than transfer the clips to FCE4 to work on them and edit. I've tried importing through FCE4 but it doesn't make a difference in video quality.

your links seem broken… but, you said they seemed liney… maybe you forgot do de-interlace.
de-interlacing makes your video so that it's proper for viewing on a computer screen.
there are two ways to de-interlace you footage in Final Cut Express:
1: doubble click on one of the clips to bring it into the viewer, then go to Effects —» Video Filters —» Video —» De-interlace. You can then copy and paste that filter to all the other clips in your video.
2: export using quicktime convertion, select quicktime movie, and then click options, click on size, and click "de-interlace source video"

  • Exporting video - HIGH QUALITY

    Dear Readers.
I have a question regarding an export of a video from Final Cut Pro. I am about to have an exhibition of my work and I really need to have it projected High Quality. I have decided to play it straight from the laptop instead of burning a DVD (which takes a lot of information). The only thing that I am not sure how to do, is an export of Video. Which in your opinion would be the highest possible quality of playback if the video is going to be screened via Quick Time (unless there is something better that goes full screen on a computer?)? I would be very grateful for some help.
    Thank you all in advance.
    Karolina

    Hi:
This way you'll get the same quality that your timeline, but depending on the footage format (I didn't find any data about this in the original post) you must take some care.
QT will play DV files as square pixels and will show your footage distorted, and will play it by default at low quelity. To play it at full quality open the file in QT and go to Window > Movie Properties, select Video Track and in the lower right you'll find the High Quality option.
In the same panel you can change the display size to compensate the pixel aspect ratio in case your movie is non square pixels.
You can save your movie and those settings will be saved in the file.
    Hope that helps !

  • IMovie08 plays my video, but any export will not - WHY?

Hi. My short (<10 min) video and audio plays fine in iMovie, but sharing it to Media Browser, or exporting it using any of the methods, then opening it in iDVD always results in a project with audio but no video.
If I go back to iMovie, the video is there, of course.
    Why isn't the video exporting?
Thanks very much for any help you can offer.
    David

    It works for me.
I export, choose a file size - Medium or Large - and it exports ..to the 'Media Browser', in which case it plays perfectly in QuickTime Player (..we-e-ell, as long as I turn on "High Quality" playback within QuickTime!..) and it also exports to the web, e.g: here.
It's a different kind of editing program ..well, not really editing, but Assembling.
It's for quickly assembling a whole load of clips, slinging in some music and a few quick Dissolves and adding a Title or two.
For laying video over an audio track, or for dropping in 'cutaway' shots, or for adjusting audio levels through the movie, for mixing audio tracks, etc, continue to use iMovie HD 6.
So we now have two movie-editing programs: quick assembly in iMovie '08 (..or "iMovie 7.0" as "About iMovie" describes it..) and considered fine adjustments, Bookmarks, Chapter Markers, Slo-Mo and Reverse, plus many other F/X, transitions and titles in the still-extant iMovie HD 6 version.
Two tools, and the new one has cost about $15, when you consider it to be just one item within "iLife '08".
I think it's a bargain at $15 ..it's got the optical tweaking of the high-priced 'Aperture' ..now also available for tweaking photos' highlights and shadows within the new 'iPhoto'.. and it's got very fast 'scrubbing' (..or 'skimming' as it's now called in iMovie '08..) with easy selection of just the sequence(s) which you want to add to a project, it's got multiple (unlimited?) Undo, for fixing mistakes, it's extremely stable compared with many previous versions of the 'old' iMovie.
I find it very easy to get timing right just by 'skimming', and although I can't fiddle with the audio to the extent I used to in iMHD6, it provides very fast editing, colour, contrast and exposure adjustment (..no rendering!..) and - just to emphasise this - it is STABLE ..no more constant Saving, nor having to Quit and Restart.
    So - it's different.
As Beverly and Karsten have said, maybe it should be called "iVideo" to distinguish it from the previous versions of "iMovie".
But simply use the tool that's appropriate for what you want to do ..saw, screwdriver, chisel: iMovie HD 6 or iMovie '08.
'06 for delicate fine tweaking of multi-layered audio effects, insert edits and video effects and transitions; iMovie '08 for quick'n'dirty effortless assembly, and fine tuning the look of the video, but without much audio tweaking.
Personally, I don't miss the hours:mins:seconds:frames timecode of iMHD6 ..I edit by 'heartbeat' anyway, so the new, reliable 'skimming' is nice and handy.
..And - so far - I haven't had any problems with Exporting/Sharing ..except that QuickTime seems to display iM'08 material, by default, in lo-quality, so in QuickTime you MUST use Apple+'J' (Show Movie Properties) and tick the little "High Quality" box at bottom-right for decent playback.

  • Imovie media browser only has one option, "Mobile". other videos had option for medium and small. mobile option wont import into iDVD. other videos gave me the Medium option, why not this one?

help! imovie media browser only has one option, "Mobile". other videos had option for medium and small. mobile option wont import into iDVD. other videos gave me the Medium option, why not this one? need answers ASAP!

    That is your answer then.
    Large is 960x540
    Medium is 640x480 (or 720x480)
    Mobile is probably 480x272.
It is offering you the sizes that make sense given the size of your source material.
As a trick, you might try this. In your project, put a short 640x480 clip in the project as the first clip of the project. Then keep the rest of the project as is. See if it will let you share now in Medium. It will not look as good, because there are not enough pixels to cover the Medium size, but it might work.

  • I'm trying to make a timelapse with 900 pictures converted into 30 fps to get a 30 seconds video but after exporting my movie why is my video length 15 minutes?

So, I downloaded a slideshow templates and I'm trying to make a timelapse with 900 pictures converted into 30 fps to get a 30 seconds video but after exporting my movie why is my video length 15 minutes?

What settings are you using to export the video with?  I think 29.97fps is the only one that works with LR 5:

  • Final Archived video export options?

    Final Archived video export options?
    Hello All
What is the best method for exporting video for archive purposes, once you’ve done all you editing, correcting, toning, grading and so on.  So that you can have a master corrected file incase the Premiere file should become corrupted or something else.  I deal in 10-20 short clips maybe 10-15 seconds each and I want to keep them in an uncompressed HD format.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks
    Mark

If you're talking about master output media, as Harm says, the important thing is that you use a lossless codec such as Cineform or Lagarith.
If you're talking about the actual prproj files, you don't have much choice other than Project > Project Manager > Trim Project.  This will remove unused material and give a few other options.   Store the whole project  - trimmed material and all - -on a removable drive.
Before the days of cheap storage, the rushes would be deleted and, if ever needed again, re-digitized and reconformed using the prproj and EDL files.

  • Setting Poster Frame for H.264 Youtube HD video exported from Pr CC

    Hey All,
I've searched many of the forums for an answer to this, but most of them refer to setting poster frames in encore/media encoder.
I'm wanting to select a specific frame from the video i've created to be used as the poster frame (i.e. the frame that is displayed as the preview of the video before it is played to show the viewer the content of the video) on the video when it's uploaded, either to Youtube or Facebook etc. As i'm not using En or the Media Encoder, I'm wanting to do this directly from Premiere Pro CC.
I'm sure I've seen/used a feature to select a poster frame within Pr before, but can't for the life of me remember or find where it is (if it is actually there at all).
    Can anyone provide any suggestions?

Unfortunately Compressor, Quicktime X and Quicktime 7 can't play a Blu-ray .264 video files. This makes it hard to test your raw Blu-ray videos.
I found an app that will plaback the Blu-ray .264 video file on a Mac, VideoSpec. It's a free app!
    http://videospec.free.fr/index.html
Drop your Blu-ray .264 video onto the open window and hit the play button in the upper left. VideoSpec has the Mplayer incorporated into the app. I guess you could download the stand-alone Mplayer app. But, Videospec gives you more options, video info for example.
What you could do to save on Blu-ray discs is to burn the Video onto a DVD for a test. You can only burn about 35 minute onto a DVD disc.
