HA between Dedicated T1 and L2L VPN

I'm looking for ideas on how to have complete HA between a dedicated T1 and an L2L VPN over the internet.
We had discussed routing protocol OSPF but would like to avoid the converge issues that could rise and affect other customers in the same DMZ.
What would be our options if we do not want to use a routing protocol? How could we fail over to the backup line, the L2L, should the T1 fail. I had mentioned changing the metrics but this will not identify a problem on the line should the customers ethernet link goe down.
Feel free to include an ideas that would use routing protocols.

I had to revisit this configuration. I had decided since we are not going to use a routing protocol that a floating route between the T1 router and VPN is the best solution. although this should work if the router or Ethernet of the router goes down it should fail if the the Ethernet interface of the router, which has OSPF running between their network and our LAN, does not fail.
But it is not failing?
I have attached a diagram.

  • Change between  dedicated mode and MTS mode

The question is for Oralce 8.1.7 and OPS. The database servers seem to have been configured as dedicated ones. However, as the number of clients grows rapidly, the databases' performance decreases severely. Therefore, I want to change the servers to be in the MTS mode to limit the connections. Can I do that and also how to do it? One more question is that how can I know which mode the database server is configured to be in, dedicated on or MTS.

I think you config MTS_SERVER and MTS_DISPATCH parameter in init.ora file is ok.
you can query v$mts check your database mode.

  • Difference between L2 and L3 VPN

could any one tell me the difference between the l2 and l3 vpn
    regards,
    Mahesh.

L2 MPLS VPN works on switching infrastructure as we all known and also has some limitations like works only point-to-point links, only for shorter disance etc. Likewise, L3 MPLS VPN works on routing infrastructure which has protocol support of MP-BGP,EIGRP and OSPF. More details on the following PDF.

  • Performance end to end testing and comparison between MPLS VPN and VPLS VPN

    Hi,
I am student of MSc Network Security and as for my project which is " Comparison between MPLS L3 VPN and VPLS VPN, performance monitoring by end to end testing " I have heard a lot of buzz about VPLS as becoming NGN, I wanted to exppore that and produce a comparison report of which technology is better. To accomplish this I am using GNS3, with respect to the MPLS L3 VPN lab setup that is not a problem but I am stuck at the VPLS part how to setup that ? I have searched but unable to find any cost effective mean, even it is not possible in the university lab as we dont have 7600 series
I would appreciate any support, guidence, advice.
    Thanks
    Shahbaz

    Hi Shahbaz,
I am not completely sure I understand your request.
MPLS VPN and VPLS are 2 technologies meant to address to different needs, L3 VPN as opposed as L2 VPN. Not completely sure how you would compare them in terms of performance. Would you compare the performance of a F1 racing car with a Rally racing car?
From the ISP point of view there is little difference (if we don't want to consider the specific inherent peculiarities of each technology) , as in the very basic scenarios we can boil down to the following basic operations for both:
Ingress PE impose 2 labels (at least)
Core Ps swap top most MPLS label
Egress PE removes last label exposing underlying packet or frame.
So whether the LSRs deal with underlying L2 frames or L3 IP packets there is no real difference in terms of performance (actually the P routers don't even notice any difference).
About simulators, I am not aware of anyone able to simulate a L2 VPN (AtoM or VPLS).

  • L2L VPN with source and destination NAT

    Hello,
i am new with the ASA 8.4 and was wondering how to tackle the following scenario.
    The diagram is
    Customer ---->>> Firewall --->> L2L VPN --->> Me --->> MPLS ---> Server
The server is accessible by other tunnels in place but there is no NAT needed. For the tunnel we are talking about it is
The Customer connects the following way
    Source: 198.1.1.1
    Destination: 192.168.1.1
It gets to the outside ASA interface which should translate the packets to:
    Source: 10.110.110.1
    Destination: 10.120.110.1
On the way back, 10.120.110.1 should be translated to 192.168.1.1 only when going to 198.1.1.1
I did the following configuration which I am not able to test but tomorrow during the migration
    object network obj-198.1.1.1
    host 198.1.1.1
    object network obj-198.1.1.1
    nat (outside,inside) dynamic 10.110.110.1
For the inside to outside NAT depending on the destination:
    object network Real-IP
      host 10.120.110.1
    object-group network PE-VPN-src
    network-object host 198.1.1.1
    object network Destination-NAT
    host 192.168.1.1
    nat (inside,outside) source static Real-IP Destination-NAT destination static PE-VPN-src PE-VPN-src
Question is if I should create also the following or not for the outside to inside flow NAT? Or the NAT is done from the inside to outside estatement even if the traffic is always initiated from outside interface?
    object network obj-192.168.1.1
    host 192.168.1.1
    object network obj-192.168.1.1
    nat (outside,inside) dynamic 10.120.110.1

Let's use a spare ip address in the same subnet as the ASA inside interface for the NAT (assuming that 10.10.10.251 is free (pls kindly double check and use a free IP Address accordingly):
    object network obj-10.10.10.243
      host 10.10.10.243
    object network obj-77.x.x.24
      host 77.x.x.24
    object network obj-10.10.10.251
      host 10.10.10.251
    object network obj-pcA
      host 86.x.x.253
    nat (inside,outside) source static obj-10.10.10.243 obj-77.x.x.24 destination static obj-10.10.10.251 obj-86.x.x.253
    Hope that helps.

  • VPN between cisco WRVS4400N and EdgeMarc

    Hi Experts
    Please help me.
Is it possible to create VPN between cisco WRVS4400N and EdgeMarc appliance.
    Regards,
    Ejaz

    Hi Ejaz
I don't expect any cisco folks that answer this community to be expert on EdgeMarc, but i may be wrong..
We employ a open standard IPSec implementation.
Here is the open source document that relates to the RV220W.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/csbr/rv220w/open_source/OSD_RV220W_78-19892-02.pdf
The question  could have  been,  have you asked EsgeMarc if they wiork with open standard based IPSec implemations on our routers.
I would prefer you look at the RV220W if possible, which is a relatively young product.
I am guessing since you can source a product from Disti, try one and see if it works.
The beauty of buying from a Cisco Disti Partner, is they they have a  returns policy. Check out that policy, if you wish and  keep the packaging and try out your application.
Answered a question with someone trying to form a IPSec link to a OEM firewall/ IPSec gateway ..it worked. so give your application a try
    regards Dave.

  • Different between shared server and dedicated server

could you explain difference between shared server and dedicated server.

Oracle has two modes, a shared server mode and a dedicated server mode. In dedicated server mode (the default), the Oracle server creates one process per connection.
This quickly limits the number of connections the Oracle Server can support due to the following:
1.There is an OS limit on how many processes/file descriptors can be supported
2.Oracle has an internal PROCESSES parameter that prevents it from launching more than the specified number of processes.
When it is anticipated that these limits may be exceeded, which frequently happens for 50-100 concurrent connections, you should either configure Oracle in shared server mode or increase the limits above, so that many concurrent connections can be supported by each Oracle process. Oracle states that running in shared server mode is slightly slower than in dedicated server mode.

    Hi,
when you applied the tunnel-group VPN, you should have seen a warning telling that tunnel-group can have name only if it's for remote-access VPN, or certificate authentication is used. so, L2L vpn with pre-shared keys can only have tunnel-groups named as the peer IP address.

  • Difference between connection, session and process

    Hi all,
Can anyone please update me on the difference between connection, session and process.
    Thanks in advance,
    - Sri

I got this useful note by googled in net. It describes session, connection, process gracefully.
A connection is a physical circuit between you and the database.A connection
might be one of many types -- most popular begin DEDICATED server and SHARED
server. Zero, one or more sessions may be established over a given connection
to the database as show above with sqlplus. A process will be used by a session
to execute statements. Sometimes there is a one to one relationship between
CONNECTION->SESSION->PROCESS (eg: a normal dedicated server connection).
Sometimes there is a one to many from connection to sessions (eg: like
autotrace, one connection, two sessions, one process). A process does not have
to be dedicated to a specific connection or session however, for example when
using shared server (MTS), your SESSION will grab a process from a pool of
processes in order to execute a statement. When the call is over, that process
is released back to the pool of processes.

  • ASA 5505 site-to-site VPN tunnel and client VPN sessions

    Hello all
I have several years of general networking experience, but I have not yet had to set up an ASA from the ground up, so please bear with me.
I have a client who needs to establish a VPN tunnel from his satellite office (Site A) to his corporate office (Site Z).  His satellite office will have a single PC sitting behind the ASA.  In addition, he needs to be able to VPN from his home (Site H) to Site A to access his PC.
The first question I have is about the ASA 5505 and the various licensing options.  I want to ensure that an ASA5505-BUN-K9 will be able to establish the site-to-site tunnel as well as allow him to use either the IPsec or SSL VPN client to connect from Site H to Site A.  Would someone please confirm or deny that for me?
Secondly, I would like to verify that no special routing or configuration would need to take place in order to allow traffic not destined for Site Z (i.e., general web browsing or other traffic to any resource that is not part of the Site Z network) to go out his outside interface without specifically traversing the VPN tunnel (split tunneling?)
Finally, if the client were to establish a VPN session from Site H to Site A, would that allow for him to connect directly into resources at Site Z without any special firewall security rules?  Since the VPN session would come in on the outside interface, and the tunnel back to Site Z goes out on the same interface, would this constitute a split horizon scenario that would call for a more complex config, or will the ASA handle that automatically without issue?
I don't yet have the equipment in-hand, so I can't provide any sample configs for you to look over, but I will certainly do so once I've got it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance provided!

    First question:
Yes, 5505 will be able to establish site-to-site tunnel, and he can use IPSec vpn client, and SSL VPN (it comes with 2 default SSL VPN license).
    Second question:
Yes, you are right. No special routing is required. All you need to configure is site-to-site VPN between Site A and Site Z LAN, and the internet traffic will be routed via Site A internet. Assuming you have all the NAT statement configured for that.
    Last question:
This needs to be configured, it wouldn't automatically allow access to Site Z when he VPNs in to Site A.
Here is what needs to be configured:
    1) Split tunnel ACL for VPN Client should include both Site Z and Site A LAN subnets.
    2) On site A configures: same-security-traffic permit intra-interface
    3) Crypto ACL for the site-to-site tunnel between Site Z and Site A needs to include the VPN Client pool subnet as follows:
    On Site Z:
    access-list permit ip
    On Site A:
    access-list permit ip
    4) NAT exemption on site Z needs to include vpn client pool subnet as well.
    Hope that helps.

  • ASA 5505 Site to Site and Web VPN

Hello all, I need to add a site to site tunnel from a an ASA 5505 (ver 8.05) to a Sonic wall appliance. The problem is, the ASA already has remote access VPN and anyconnect VPN configured. I'm not sure if its possible to add another secured tunnel to the device. Ive already got one NAT 0 statement.
    Thanks for your expert opinions!

    Hi,
There should be no problem adding a Site to Site VPN on the ASA even if it has Client VPN configured.
If you for example have an "inside" interface which has NAT0 configuration like
    nat (inside) 0 access-list NAT0
You just add the needed ACL lines to that existing ACL for the L2L VPN.
On the basis of the information you provided I dont see any problem configuring the L2L VPN on the ASA.

  • Tweak the balance between fan speed and CPU temperature / Dell M6400?

    Hi all,
I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. It runs really well on Arch, but is a bit noisy. It has always been noisy, btw, but I recently noticed that the CPU fan was blowing a lot of air even though the CPU temperature is lower than 70°C. When I start the laptop, its CPU fan stays at its minimal speed only for 1 or 2 minutes, then increases its rotation speed to a second level. It reaches it maximal speed only under heavy load, when the CPU reaches >80-95°C. I would rather let the CPU run a bit hotter before the fan starts to blow: let's say the fan could enter its intermediary speed between 70°C and 85°C instead of 55-80°C, and blow at is its maximum speed beyond that.
I checked the Fan Speed Control wiki page, but lm-sensors is not able to show me the status of the fans. Any idea ?
    Aurel.
PS: the temperature of the GPU is not reported by sensors, and nvidia-settings reports around 60°C. Its dedicated fan is very quiet.

I'm in the same situation from at least 1 month ( INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME X9100, 3.06GHz with 8GB ram, one solid state disk 128 GB, and one sata disk 500GB)
My dell M6400 has dual boot: ubuntu and windows7. The fan works a lot and continuosly in both environment and this is the reason because I have doubt that the origin of the problem is in hardware problem?

  • L2L VPN Issue - one subnet not reachable

    Hi Folks,
I have a strange issue with a new VPN connection and would appreciate any help.
I have a pair of Cisco asa 5540s configured as a failover pair (code version 8.2(5)).
I have recently added 2 new L2L VPNs - both these VPNs are sourced from the same interface on my ASA (called isp), and both are to the same customer, but they terminate on different firewalls on the cusomter end, and encrypt traffic from different customer subnets.    There's a basic network diagram attached.
VPN 1 - is for traffic from the customer subnet 10.2.1.0/24.    Devices in this subnet should be able to access 2 subnets on my network - DMZ 211 (192.168.211.0./24) and DMZ 144 (192.168.144.0/24).    This VPN works correctly.
VPN 2 - is for traffic from the customer subnet 192.168.1.0/24.    Devices in  this subnet should be able to access the same 2 subnets on my network - DMZ 211  (192.168.211.0./24) and DMZ 144 (192.168.144.0/24).    This VPN is not working correctly - the customer can access DMZ 144, but not DMZ 211.
There are isakmp and ipsec SAs for both VPNs.    I've noticed that the packets encaps/decaps counter does not increment when the customer sends test traffic to DMZ 211.  This counter does increment when they send test traffic to DMZ144.   I can also see traffic sent to DMZ 144 from the customer subnet 192.168.1.0/24 in packet captures on the DMZ 144 interface of the ASA.   I cannot see similar traffic in captures on the DMZ211 interface (although I can see traffic sent to DMZ211 if it is sourced from 10.2.1.0/24 - ie when it uses VPN1)
Nat exemption is configured for both 192.168.1.0/24 and 10.2.1.0/24.
There is a route to both customer subnets via the same next hop.
There is nothing in the logs toindicate that traffic from 192.168.1.0/24 is being dropped
I suspect that this may be an issue on the customer end, but I'd like to be able to prove that.   Specifically, I would really like to be able to capture traffic destined to DMZ 211 on the isp interface of the firewall after it has been decrypted - I don't know if this can be done however, and I haven'treally found a good way to prove or disprove that VPN traffic from 192.168.1.0/24 to DMZ211 is arriving at the isp interface of my ASA, and to show what's happening to that traffic after it arrives.

Clearing the counters was a good idea. If the counter is not incrementing and if ping from the remote side is not causing the VPN to come up it certainly confirms that something is not working right.
It might be interesting to wait till the SAs time out and go inactive and then test again with the ping from the remote subnet that is not working. Turn on debug for ISAKMP and see if there is any attempt to negotiate. Especially if you do not receive any attempt to initiate ISAKMP from then then that would be one way to show that there is a problem on the remote side.
Certainly the ASA does have the ability to do packet capture. I have used that capability and it can be quite helpful. I have not tried to do a capture on the outside interface for incoming VPN traffic and so am not sure whether you would be capturing the encrypted packet or the de-encrypted packet. You can configure an access list to identify traffic to capture and I guess that you could write an access list that included both the peer addresses as source and destination to capture the encrypted traffic and entries that were the un-encrypted source and destination subnets to capture traffic after de-encryption.
