Hang in word/preview when do a "save as" into a folder

Since upgrading to 10.6 I have noticed that I am having problems with certain applications "hanging" when do a "save as" into a folder found using the search box in the "save as" dialog box. This seem most prevalent with word and preview but also seems to happen with saving attachments from mail.
The most common scenario is you get a word attachment in mail, double click to open it (word 2008) and then once it is open in mail (or preview for a pdf), select "save as", once the dialog box opens search for a folder by name once the folder is found double click on it to open and then do a "save". The file seems to save, the dialog box close and then about 2 seconds later the application hangs with the pizza wheel and has to be forced quite. This is absolutely reproducable in word.
Simply opening a file and doing a save as in the same way seems to have the same problem
Excel and Powerpoint don't seem to have the same problem.
If you manually navigate to the folder you want to save the file into there is no problem.
I have rebuilt spotlight, run repair privileges, run the font book to remove any damaged fonts etc with no luck.
Firstly I would like some people to try and reproduce the problem to see if it is "universal".
Secondly, if not a specific 10.6 bug any thoughts on what might be the problem?

Some further information.
Tried saving attachments from Mail using the above described method on another Mac and had the same hang.
Sequence:
Find an email in Mail with attachments
Click on the little "save" button and select "save all"
When the dialog window opens use the search box in the top right hand corner of the window to search for a folder (any folder).
Double click on the found folder so it opens
Click on the "save" button.
The files save, the dialog window closes and a few seconds later word hangs with the spinning pizza wheel of death.
You then have to force quit word.
Note the files were saved successfully into the selected folder
Looks to me like a clear system bug.
Interested in other people trying this to confirm its existence, so far 3/3 Macs updgraded to 10.6.1 show this bug.

  • When trying to upload a MS word file (.docx) to gmail, it uploads into a folder that doesn't contain the original document when i try to download it from e-mail.  how do i solve this?

when trying to upload a MS word file (.docx) to gmail, it uploads as a 'folder' that doesn't contain the original document when i try to download it back from the e-mail.  how do i set the format to simply upload the document itself???  Thanks...

Yes, excuse me. attach a file.  I have separate folders on my desktop to organize my word documents, so I'm guessing this might be a part of the problem.  When I go to attach one of these documents into gmail, the resulting attachment is another folder icon (not the original organizational folders) with 4 subfolders containing a slew of .xml files reading things like "header.xml" "format.xml" "settings.xml" "style.xml" "contenttype.xml" There are also a few .jpegs and a small folder reading "word" as one of the subfolders.

  • Word crashes when click on 'save as'

When I try to save a new document in Word, Excel and Applescript the programs crash. Do I have a virus? iMac has been performing fine for over 12 months. Did a software upgrade yesterday and since restart have had these problems.

If you did the Security Update a day or two ago it's likely that's the problem. It caused issues with older PowerPC apps, rendering some non-functional. There is a new replacement download which apparently fixes it:
    Security Update 2012-001 (Snow Leopard)
Here's a thread with similar problems - good news is the updated download seems to fix it:

  • System hanging up on startup when Image Card reader plugged into front

My motherboard is a MSI 845PE Max2. When I plug in an image card reader into one of my front usb ports after the machine has been turned on the images are read fine no problem. Should I shut the machine down and restart it the machine hangs on the white screen displaying the MSI logo and the notice to hit the tab and other key to skip the messages. I have tried to hit any and every combination of keys but nothing happens. Even when I try to press the restart button on my machine nothing happens. I literally have to use the power switch in back of the case to get the machine to start up again and have to remove the Image card reader from the front usb port. Can anyone offer some advice on how I can fix this?

It is then obviously a compatibility issue with that particular card reader and that particular board model. As your board is long time EOL ("End-of-life") and has been replaced by two generations already there will be no further updates. What bios versions did you try already?

  • When I create a bookmark with Command-D, I am unable to save it into a folder -- the list of folders does not appear.

When I hit command-D, the "page bookmarked" window appears as usual, but the area where you normally see a list of bookmark folders is empty.
When I look at all my bookmarks (Bookmarks >Organize Bookmarks), the folder called "All Bookmarks" appears as an ordinary folder without the green-book-with-a-star icon icon.
The folder with that unique green book icon is present, but is within the Bookmarks Menu folder. And it is empty.

If that isn't clear, I can post a screenshot.

  • I want to find a tip for how to copy a file automatically to a folder on an external hard drive when I put that file into a folder on the desktop

I am trying to find a way to have a folder set up so that when I add to the folder(on the Desktop) a copy of the folder is also updated on an external hard drive. So I can have two copies of the contents of the folder, one on the desktop and one on the hard drive.

  • How do I install Rosetta Stone onto my Macbook running OSX 10.8 when installing it I go into the folder called For MAC Users and the files in there are .exe files which cant be open on a Mac. If anyone has a solution or even a download link let me know.

This is really frustrating please let me know I looked around and all the downloads cost money and I would prefer if you guys could give me a free one but a solution would be even better!!
    Thanks

You have the Windows version of the software.  You will need to contact Rosetta Stone directly to get the Mac version of their software.  I can confirm it does install on Mountain Lion without issues.

  • Finder quits when draging a web photo into a folder??

folders go blank and re-appear or the finder quits and i have to click restore folders....never had this problem before i upgraded to mavericks.....any help would be welcomed....thanks

This sounds like a Lion bug...File it with Apple...
Can you use a tool other than the Finder to do the backup? Perhaps you could use an Applescript Droplet or something.
Then you could try some other tool (perhaps 'ditto') to do the copy. Worst case you can copy the folder to a temporary location on the hard drive and then copy that copy to the Solaris server...

Any ideas? Very disappointed as I have already also spent a day trying to get outlook to work using all the advice on these forums. Just not impressed. I'm I going to have the same issues with excel?

    Hi,
In regarding of the issue, it may be caused some reason, let's try to narrow down the root cause with the following methods:
1.Try disable all the add-ins to see if this behavior could be caused by the 3rd-party add-ins, if this behavior won't occur with all the add-ins disabled, we can enable them one by one to find out which one might cause the issue.
2.Try repair your Office as a quick fix
    3.Try start Word in
safe mode to see if this behavior will still occur, if this behaivor won't occur in safe mode, the behavior might be caused by certain items that are loaded with Word.
    4.Try configure Windows in
clean boot mode to check if this behavior could be caused by the 3rd-party services, if this behavior won't occur in clean boot mode, try follow the instructions in the

  • Can't save images into folders, Get info not detailing either.

    Hi,
I'm new to Macs having just moved over 3 months ago from PC's and I'm having trouble with saving images and getting system information.  When I click on Go > Utilities > then click the down arrow next to the small cog icon I can easily see my system information starting with Spotlight Comments, General, More Info, Name and Extension, Preview, Sharing and Permissions (which I've set to Read & Write for MartinForbes (Me), staff and everyone).
However when I try Go > Utilities > Martin's iMac > and click  on the same down arrow all I get is General, and Preview - and that is  it it even though it worked before.
Another thing is happening as well.  When I'm trying to save an image from the internet into a specific folder the 'Save' button get greyed out, but it will only work in the most recent folders where I don't want this file to go. To put it into the folder I want , I have to save it into a folder that I DON'T want, then copy and the locate the intended folder and paste it the folder that I had intended.  This also is happening when I save a zip file in the 'Downloads' section and try to create a folder in say, my 'Widgets' folder where I can now no longer click on 'New Folder' as this too has been greyed out. I can see that the format after I've right clicked and selected 'Save Image As' is selected as 'Preview Document* and not 'All Files.
Can someone shed some light on what I need to do to get this working please?

When you save an image, how can the browser possibly intuit where you want to save it?
You need to tell it where to save it. To do this just treat it as any Finder window and navigate to the desired folder. But you need to expand the dialogue to allow you click to the place you want to go as per a Finder window.
Then you can navigate to where you want it to be saved, and that position will become the default for next time until it is changed.
As for changing permission and the like, normally that is not required unless you have a permission problem you are trying to fix. Usually your Mac has that already worked out for you.

Acrobat X Pro v 10.1.10 (Mac OS 10.9.3) hangs when trying to save some PDF files, after opening or after commenting.  Applies for any of the Save options.  "Watch" then "spinning beach ball" appear and application is indicated as "not responding."  Mac OS Preview has no problem with the same files.  Files can be displayed with Acrobat, just not saved.  I would prefer to use Acrobat's commenting tools to mark up the document.

  • Word 2013 crashes when doing a save as pdf

Word 2013 will crash when doing a 'save as' pdf

It sounds like an item in HD/Library/Contextual Menu Items. Drag the contents of that folder to the desktop and test again. If that sorts it put the items back one at a time to find the culprit..
If that's not it, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and do the same.
Open "Console" in your Utilities folder. From the Sidebar choose: Log
Files >> CrashReporter >> "~/ Library Logs" >> Preview and paste the contents here for the latest Preview crash and maybe we can figure what's going on.

  • Firefox hangs when trying to save a file, even after removing firefox and reinstalilng afresh

I recently experienced firefox hanging/freezing indefinitely when trying to save files, such as pdf files. The same pdf files open fine within the browser if I do not select "save link as...", but the problem occurs when I try to save such a file. The problem is similar regardless of the file type (e.g., .mp3, .txt). Not only did I go through the recommended solutions that mozilla suggests when file downloads hang, but I uninstalled firefox completely (removing all files with user settings), and then reinstalled firefox afresh without any plugins or add-ons, and I still have the same file save problem. It may also be worth mentioning that this problem does not occur in internet explorer or chrome. Maybe a system file that firefox uses got corrupted (?), but I don't know which one or how to repair it if that indeed is the problem.
My system is running XP, and I have McAfee AV installed (which has not been a problem in the past).

Early on I tried starting firefox in safe mode as one possible fix, and that didn't solve the problem. I just tried again right now with the fresh installation, and still no luck.
    Any other ideas?

  • Unable to save Word documents when accessing them directly from the site because the document never converts from a read-only even though the User chooses to enable editing

Issue has only popped up recently and cannot reproduce in a Test environment.  Unaware of any SharePoint changes, so hoping someone can point me in the correct direction.
Previously Word document did not have to be physically checked out, but rather the editing of the doc also checked out the doc in a document library. This is the way we want it to remain –
no manual check-out process. Now if a doc is edited without being checked-out, there is an issue with the process as the application thinks the doc is read-only (message received when trying to save the doc) even if enable editing is selected. The
following message appears when you try to save the document:
This message can appear if you have been editing a file that was opened as read-only. A file opened as read-only will have (Read-Only) appended to the file name as it appears in the title bar of Word. You can still save the document, but you must
save it by using a different file name. If you use Windows Explorer to change the read-only properties of the file, while the file is open in Word, it will not enable Word to save the file. Word must open a non-read-only version of the file in order to save
it by using its original file name. If you have not made any changes to the file, you can close it, and then use the following steps to make the file writeable. 1. Click the File tab, and then click Open. 2. Browse to the file and right-click it. 3. Click
Properties, and then clear the Read-Only check box. 4. Reopen the file. If you have made changes to a read-only file, you can save it, and then use the following steps to give the modified file the original file name. 1. Click the File tab, and then click
Save As. 2. Enter a different file name, and then click Save. 3. NOTE: Adding "Rev1", or "Mod1" to the original file name may help you to remember it later. 4. Click the File tab, and then click Close. 5. Open Windows Explorer. 6. Browse
to the original read-only file. 7. Rename the read-only file. 8. Browse to the new file. 9. Rename the new file to the name of the original file. Do not delete the read-only file until after you have determined you no longer need it.
Previously, when check-out was optional, a file was checked out automatically when someone opened it for editing, unless it was already checked out. The editing commands notified the User that the file is being/was checked out.  The real issue is the
word doc can no longer be saved as the application still believes the doc is read-only.

    Hi,
According to your description, you give the domain admin full control over files on the old file server, but you cannot move the files to the new file server. After pull the files from the old to the new file server, the domain admin can only read the files
    on the new file server.
How did you move the files from the old file server to the new file server? Did you setup replication between the two file server or use robocopy?
Please check the files permissions on the new file server to see if the permissions are changed, then share the folder on the new file server to everyone to see the result.

  • I am getting an error when attempting to save or export a PDF to Word

When attempting to save as OR export a PDF document to Word, I am getting the following error:   Bad PDF, error in processing fonts. <cannot find CMap resource file>.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  I also attached an image of the error pop up.

There are some preflight scripts to fix errors in a PDF. You might try those, particularly for fonts. An alternative is to refry the PDF by printing to a new PDF and then trying to save that to WORD.
