Hanging punctuation problems

I have been using a paragraph style that uses a nested style and tab for taking notes, indicating the page number and then the note (see below)
My probelm is that for some reason, punctuation on the first line do not hang properly. Optical margin alignment works fine for the rest of the lines.
I've actually had this issue in other documents that don't use tabs as well.
Anyone have any insight on how to fix this?
Thanks,
Kate

I presume the paragraph style also has a left inident to match your tab and a hanging indent for the first line. Your punctuation on the first line is not the first character in the line and is not on the edge, so there is no reason why it WOULD hang.
The only way I can think of off the top of my head to achive the look you want is to use a an anchored object for the number and make the paragraph indent even. The anchor point probably also cannot be the first character in the line.
Well,  just thought of something else that looks like it will work, if you have CS4. Forget thet tab after the number and replace it with a forced line break. Create a character style that changes the leading to 0, and use line styles in your paragraph style to apply none through the first line, then the zero-lead style through one line. You still need the paragraph indent and hanging first line, but since the punctuation is now technically on the second line it should hang.

    I'm using CS 5.5 (7.5.3), Roman hanging punctuation does not appear in my paragragh menu. Can anyone tell me where to find it?
    Thank you in advance for any help.

    Unfortunately Optical Margin Alignment is no paragraph style property or even better: a property that could adapt to a combination of font style and point size. One application would be aligning different font styles or weights.

    A workaround with two text frames, but still a problem, if you consider the column span feature:

  • Safari 4.0.3 + Flash Player Hang SBBOD Problem.

    Hi, I feel like this is a bit redundant, but I've been skimming through the forums trying to figure out the answer to my problem.
    My Safari was updated to 4.0.3 recently (earlier today, I believe), and now when I try to visit any site with flash-based content (youtube, certain news sites, etc.), Safari starts to hang and I have to do a "force quit". I followed instructions and was able to figure out that the Flash player plug-in caused the hanging/crashing problem.
    As far as I know, I have the latest updated plug-ins. Also, I don't have any other plug-ins installed besides the default ones (my MBP is fairly new, I got it around 2 weeks ago. This is very annoying, considering that Safari was working just fine 8 hours ago (since I was still able to view flash-based websites without the hang problem).
    Right now I've disabled plug-ins to avoid the hang, but it's really a nuisance and I can't figure out why the problem is happening. My best guess is that it has to do with my updating Safari from 4.0.2 to 4.0.3, but I'm no tech guru.
    I'd really appreciate the help! I'm posting my latest crash report in the post below!

    edit: I decided to reboot my machine just in case and now Safari is working just fine. If it hangs again I'll edit this post...

    Hi,
    if you post message, it would be great if you could include more information on the errors you are encountering. "startsap does not work" is not useful to give advises. You also may have get a quicker answer if you split up your long messages into smaller ones. In the middle of the text I found a simple question:
    How will I create the db2support file? Can you give me the command for this?
    Just use the db2support tool, which is described in detail in the DB2 documentation.
    I know that multiple customers has managed to setup SAP on DB2 using HACMP. In addition some customers use the new Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatforms (SAMP).
    Oh, I currently see that your message is from last year. I suppose you have solved the problems already.

    My iPhone5 is under warranty but during incoming call handset is hang. this problem 2-3 time a day. pleas help.

    I'm experiencing what is I believe to be the same issue with my iPhone 4, and have been suffering in silence for about a week.
    iPhone 4 model MC603X with Modem Firmware 04.10.01, 16Gb, cheap silicone cover, Vodafone NZ as my carrier.
    My screen locks after 1 minute of inactivity as it should with my settings. Perhaps 1 call in 5, or 1 call in 10, the screen wakes up and displays called ID information etc correctly, but I cannot swipe to answer the call. The touch screen simply fails to respond.
    If I push the power button briefly to silence the ringtone, this does not make a difference. The iPhone has to be locked (and screen turned off), then push a hardware button to wake up the display, and then I can swipe to unlock the device.
    This is only since iOS 4.3 and unfortunately iOS 4.3.1 has not changed this behaviour.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Cheers, Mike

    Hello Dorothy.
    This kind of issues are, unfortunately, more common and the we'd like. Thankfully, 99% of the cases are very easy to solve. However, you do need to diagnose what your exact problem is. Do this:
    #run Firefox in safe-mode to disable all extensions and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
    #update all extensions and plugins in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #disable all extensions and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
    #enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic extension, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all your extensions (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all;
    #you're done! You've fixed your problems with problematic add-ons.
    Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
    #do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
    #disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix your issues with Firefox, proceed;
    #check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable them to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't work, proceed to the following point;
    #clean up your OS registry, using appropriate software. If this doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. Except make sure you've followed my instructions correctly.

  • Please help me figure out why Firefox is hanging - with problem signature

    Hi, I am having a repetitive issue with Firefox where it just freezes up ("not responding). Most of the time it never responds and I have to just shut it all down and restart. When I do this, even though I click the option to check for a solution and close the program, it thinks for a second and gives me the following "problem signature" but it doesn't inform me of any solution. Here is what it usually says:
    Problem signature:

    At this point firefox totally shuts down and does not restart unless I open it again. When this happens I get the "this is embarrassing" screen where I can uncheck or leave checked what I want to be restored. I will point out that I usually have a few windows and multiple tabs in each window open at any given time. I don't know if this factors into it because I never only have one window or tab open to compare it to. I also generally leave them open even when I close my laptop so basically they stay open until the next time is crashes. Maybe this is the issue? Not sure. I also sometimes get an error type message about a script not working right. The most recent one is:
    "Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/tabbox.xml:734"
    I only use Firefox generally, browser-wise. I am using IE to post this because Firefox just keeps freezing and when I try to restart it and re-open the previous windows I had open, it freezes again. I do not have Chrome or any other browser installed. I love Firefox!
    Thank you for any help you can provide. I skipped over some of the recommendations that are generally suggested before posting a question but they all would have involved scrapping the many tabs I have open and then I would lose all of them because they aren't bookmarked. I hope that doesn't sound really stupid. I'm (obviously) not super technically inclined when it comes to the internet. Thanks again for reading this and I would very much appreciate any input.
    Oh and I am using Windows 7 and I think the Firefox version is 31.0
    Thanks!!!!

    Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":

    If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

  • Getting hang/crash problem when I try to close browser window from applet

    I have a small Apllet that has a button that calls a Javascript function in the opening window, to close the window in which it is loaded.
    The Applet window is a PopUp window from one of my application's window. First time I start my application and load that Applet the button works fine. It calls the Javascript method and the Method closes the window using the self.close() method.
    But now if I open the applet window again and click on the button to close the windows, it hangs. I put in trace statements and saw that it hangs on JSObject.getWindow() window.
    I am using JDK Plugin 1.4.2_07 and 5.0 , if I work out on IE browser, it works fine.But when I use firefox or mozilla it gives problem of hanging/crashing.
    Note that in case of 1.4.2_07 this problem experienced some times but in case of 5.0 it gives always for other than IE browser.

  • Hangs up (problem with jdk?)

    Hi,
    we are developing an application using the Java API with Ifs 1.1.9 on Sun Solaris, Oracle 8.1.7.
    We parse files and an invoke perform some actions with the parsed data.
    Java Api and Parsing workd fine, until I encountered the following problem:
    In a certain function the action hangs up,
    meaning the function does not come to an end, after all I got a time-out from the ftp session.
    By debugging method I could identify that the hang up occurs within in the following step:
    Hashset hs = new HashSet();
    I changed the code to
    Vector v = new Vector();
    and got the same problem.
    Meaning that there might be a problem with the JDK-Library-Calls.
    When I call the same funtion with same argument from a JSP-Session, everything works fine.
    Is there anything known about that behavior?
    I have compiled the java-files on windows NT using an JDK1.3 installation and put it to the custum_classes directory on the sun machine.
    Might it be that I have to use jdk1.2.2.
    (for compilation?, for run-time on sun?)
    Help appreciated,
    Thomas

    Thanks for reply
    As suggested by you, i tried the 1.4.2_08 version, but i am facing the same kind of problems with this version also

  • Skype first call/beeping/hang up problem

    This is getting quite common with Skype on my Windows 8.1 laptop. What makes it worse is that I'm being charged for it.
    It's becoming every other call now but when I dial a phone number on Skype, I get this beep that appears every two seconds. I'm not able to hang up the call and it's picked up but the person at the other end doesn't hear me through the microphone. The caller may hang up (this lasts for a minute if not more) and then they hang up. The call continues and then suddenly quit.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem and what can be done to avoid it? I must have lost $20 in total due to this issue and it's become increasingly frustrating.
    I'm running the latest version of Skype and it doesn't matter if its the App version of Skype or running from the desktop.

  • Punctuation problems in Pages

    When I type decimal numbers in Pages (for example, .331) and the number occurs at the end of a line, the default seems to be to keep the decimal (period) on the preceding line but push the numbers to another line.  In other words, the entire number does not stay together on one line.  There has to be a name for this, but I'm not sure what it is.
    Any ideas for how I can override this?  I just switched to Pages from Word and am otherwise quite happy with Pages, but never had this problem with Word.

    Hello
    I will describe what I get on my French system.
    If there is a space, a period then a digit, only the digit move to the line below as you described.
    If I replace the period by the comma which is the decimal separator in use here, same behavior.
    If I put a 0 before the period or the comma, the syntax analyzer treats the whole as a number and move it to the line below.
    I guess that in the first case, the period or the comma are treated as punctuation characters (which, from my point of view, is the logical behavior) and treat them as decimal separator in the second case (which is logical too).
    I tried to put a NO BREAK NARROW SPACE ($202F) (I gave them an orange background to show them) between the period and the first digit.
    I was really surprised because after this change, the number behaved as if it was glued to the word before.

  • IPod,  iTunes Syncing on Leopard + Apple Wired Keyboard = Hang and problems

    Sorry for the cryptic topic title but I search liked crazy and through several different sites I managed to hobble together a configuration that reproduces my problem. Maybe those terms will helps others...
    Anyway, I have Mac Pro with OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and a 5G video iPod. Just recently during iTunes syncing it began to randomly hang quite early on in the process. No itunes is still responsive but it just stays on the same song forever, never making any progress. I did restore, auto vs. manual, disk space enable/disable every combination of iTunes and iPod settings I could try.
    The crazy part is that I HAVE fixed the problem but I wanted Apple and others to know what to do and that is needs to be fixed correctly
    Recently (same time iTunes started failing) I got the new Apple wired keyboard (love it!) but it IS the problem (or rather the combination of stuff). If I just unplug that keyboard during the iTunes sync it works every time, plug it back in and it hangs again next time iTunes syncs.
    So maybe someone else is having this problem, I hope you find this forum and I hope Apple already knows about this glitch.
    Thanks!

    I'm only going to tackle one of your issues; that of "recently added" playlists being whacked out when added to iPhones/iPods.
    Here's the issue: You set up a smart playlist with a "recently added" criterion. The playlist looks fine in iTunes, and it displays all the recent music you've added to your library properly.
    You then sync to your iPhone, and low and behold, all the tracks in that playlist do not match anything that had shown in iTunes. Believe it or not, this is a really old iTune bug. If memory serves me, it goes back to iTunes 6 or maybe earlier.
    There are two known work arounds:
    1) you turn off "live updating." This is very poor work around, because most people use a recently added playlist to automagically add their newest music to their device. Turning live updating off defeats the point.
    2)create a second smart playlist that points to the first one. What I mean is, if you have a playlist called "Newest 250 tracks" and that is the smart playlist that shows up incorrectly on your iphone, then set up a second smart playlist called "Newest 250 tracks iPhone" and the only criterion in it, is that is populates from playlist "Newest 250 tracks." It will then look identical to your first playlist, but because it doesn't contain a "recently added" criterion in itself, it will avoid the bug. So sync to that second tiered playlist, and all is well.
    Yes it's stupid to have to make a second "meta" playlist for every recently added playlist, but c'est la vie.

  • Random hanging / slowdown problems for months [SOLVED]

    I have a relatively new computer -- not a clunker -- that has random slowdowns quite frequently. They will last anywhere from 10 seconds to 3+ minutes. It always starts in just one application, like firefox or pidgin, then it "spreads" to other ones. Often, I will type a "cd" or "ls" command in a terminal while the hangs are happening. They don't actually do anything until the hangup is over. This has happened on a regular basis for months.
    I've tried switching applications. It happens with nothing but XFCE and Firefox running, or XFCE and Starcraft. It first started under KDE. I've tried moving from firefox to chrome and back, switching terminal emulators, nothing. It also happens under Windows, however, so I believe it's a hardware problem.
    I have no idea what it is though! I've tried:
    Switching out my Nvidia 9200 GT with the 8200 on-board graphics
    A different network card from my on-board (wired)
    Different hard disks -- the Windows and Linux installs are on different disks (one is IDE, the other is SATA)
    Swapping out my 2GiB RAM stick with two other RAM sticks (512MiB each) in every slot
    This leaves only my PSU, CPU, and motherboard as possible culprits after help from the #archlinux channel in narrowing down the above. Where do I go from here? I haven't any idea how to check the health of my motherboard and CPU, but I see no extra slowdown when I run Folding at Home on one of my cores (it's a quad). Whenever I reboot to my BIOs and look at the voltages my PSU is putting out, everything seems to be okay.
    I've had the same hardware since last Christmas when I upgraded my video card. It worked fine somewhere in July, IIRC, when this all started. Can anyone offer any help? I haven't any idea what I should do next.

    I've tried three different graphics cards. One is a new Nvidia 9200 GT, which I just got for Christmas. Another is the Nvidia 8200, which is an onboard chipset. The most recent, which is installed right now. is an Nvidia 8800 GTX. Although it seems to happen less with the GTX, it still happens somewhat frequently. It was worst with the onboard.
    I'm wondering if I should try stripping out my HDDs and installing on an old IDE disk I have just to be sure, even though SMART says both disks are fine.
    mprime has been running for 21 hours and no issues so far, although I do have a large box fan pointed at the open CPU case and a smaller one pointed straight at the CPU
    EDIT: Another thing I've been wondering if this would be at all possible caused by my router. My router is quite crappy -- an ancient Belkin running DD-WRT, but it barely has enough RAM to do that. Everything but the essentials is turned off. Do you think this could cause it? My dad's computer, attached to the same router, is also having problems, but that computer has had the same Windows XP install since about 2002, so it's not a great benchmark. Wondering if it's worth checking out though.
    The reason I say this is because I notice the hanging / slowdown mostly start in Firefox / Chrome / Pidgin when using the network then spread to other components. Also, I am connected to it via a *really* long (200ft I think) CAT5e cable. Could this be a problem? Should I try to throw in a wireless card and see what happens? I didn't have problems with it when we first installed it, but that was a while ago. Come to think of it, it may be about the time that the slowdown started. Could that be the culprit? I'll probably try a wireless card tomorrow and see what happens.

  • Firefox v28 will not launch yahoo and yahoo email often hangs. the problems started with v28, does not even load the homepage in the addr bar on startup.

    i set yahoo mail as a homepage.
    start firefox v28 and the screen goes blank, nothing shows in the addr bar and it just sits with
    the spinning green icon. no problems until i moved to v28. i often have issues with flash player
    hanging and created a dos bat file to kill it but that is not what seems to be happening with yahoo. pretty much everything else works. FF freezes but killing the plug in releases it. the newer versions
    of FF seem more flakey than the older ones. thanks for your help

    How do you kill the Flash player plugin using a BAT file -- are you killing an Adobe Flash exe or Firefox's plugin-container.exe?
    You can start up Firefox to a blank page using the Run box on the Start menu, with this:
    firefox.exe "about:blank"
    Hopefully that will at least get you in. Then, for Yahoo mail, make sure to access your mailbox through the Yahoo home page (or AT&T Yahoo home page, etc., as the case may be). And:
    When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
    Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
    Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
    orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
    On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
    If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    In the dialog that opens you can remove your Yahoo cookies individually.
    Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
    To rule out extensions as a possible culprit, could you try the site in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions, some advanced features, and some custom settings. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
    You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    Note: Flash and other plugins still run
    After Firefox closes, a small dialog should appear: click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Any difference?
