Hardware sleep, hibernation and standby mode tracking

Is there a way to find out that the hardware user is on is about to go into sleep, hibernation or standby mode? I need to be able to save data to the server before the hardware temporarily shuts down. I can't seem to find anything online that addresses this issue. I want to create a code similar to the Windows Media Player that kicks in a warning before changing modes. Thanks.

Hello avwood:
You might have add on running on your Google Crome Browser . Just dissable all your Google Crome add ons. See if that does trick. If no add ons are enabled then just un install  it and down load a new copy.  Then see if your computer goes to to sleep. If neither one these methods  work. Then most likely it is being run by U.S.A.  government spy crape back ground hiden program. I wouldn't recommend using it in the first place. frrw

  • Satellite P - How to disable hibernation and standby?

I have set power configuration to say Never for both Hibernation and Standby - both occur.
    What am I doing wrong?
I would be happy with Standby but do NOT want Hibernation!

    Hi p g allison,
Did you set these settings for current power profile?
For example if you disable standby and hibernation for High Performance power profile but you are using or switch to Balanced the settings dont work.
So check if they are disabled in all power profiles!!!

  • Transporting MBP: Sleep, Hibernation and dangers to hard disk

I used to transport my MBP by closing the lid and putting it in my backpack. Recently, however, it started to overheat when I do that. At first I thought it was some bug, maybe it hadn't gone to sleep properly. But then it happened again. I started to manually putting it to sleep before closing the lid, but no luck. It happened again. It happened 3 or 4 times in about 2 months and then the computer stopped working properly and I had to take it to professionals. They said I should NEVER put it in my backpack in sleep mode. Maybe if it's a 5min trip only, but not otherwise. They said the hard disk is not completely shut off in this mode and so carrying it around in movement may damage it. They checked my computer and said that indeed it was a hard disk problem, and that now that it was changed it's working fine. They said I should always shut it down before transporting it, which is a pain. (I live in Rio and it's above 30ºC most of the year, maybe that contributes to these heating problems, don't know…)
What annoys me is that I haven't found any official statement about it by Apple. I know people who never turn it off and even I did it without any problem for years with my previous MBP (well, in fact it died one day out of the blue and I have no clue why). Actually I can only assume based on discussions that the computer actually goes to sleep mode when I shut the lid, and I can only speculate about what this actually means because I haven't found any official information regarding it. I found that there's a mode called "hibernationmode 25" which is supposed to be essencially the same as shutting down the computer and saving the current RAM data to the hard disk. But I haven't found any official statement confirming this. I don't know if it really is as safe to carry it shut down as in this mode. Does anybody know where I can find official information about this? Or if there's any reliable way to contact Apple itself and actually get a reply?
    Thanks!

The Expert, Professional, you spoke to has NO clue. When any computer is put to Sleep, irrespective of what OS is installed (OS X or Windows) and what version of that OS, the only part that is supposed to be kept alive is the RAM and even that will go to sleep and dump it's contents onto the hard drive after an extended period of time if the system also has the hibernation mode set to do so. It then goes into a Deep Sleep state basically turning off completely.
I suspect what you are seeing it the system is trying to go from standard sleep mode to the Deep Sleep Hibernate mode and when that happens it must partially wake up to write the RAM data to the hard drive. At that point your system is not going back into either sleep mode or the Deep Sleep mode and that is when it heats up.
There are also many reports of Mac's of all ages crashing when trying to wake up from sleep and most of the time this is after it has gone into the Deep Sleep state and when you try to wake it the system doesn't or can't put back into the RAM the data that was written to the hard drive causing the system to hang and force a hard shutdown and restart.
I personally solve that problem by turning off the Hibernate system and deleting the Sleep Image file that is used to store the RAM data. So my MBP never going into that Deep Sleep state and I have never had a problem waking it whether after a few minutes or a day or so of being asleep. And it has never woken up on its own in my computer bag.
But to answer your question, statement from that Professional, the hard drive turns off completely when the system is put to sleep.

  • IPad unresponsive after iOS 8.02 update, doesn't show up in iTunes, hardware reset (home and standby buttons both held down for ten seconds) not working

I have a 32GB iPad mini that was purchased new in June of this year. A little while ago, I started the iOS 8.02 download while it was plugged into a wall socket using an official apple wall to USB plug and an official apple thunderbolt cable. I then left for 25 minutes to get some food.
On coming back, I discovered the iPad with a black screen showing the apple logo. I thought this was just an ordinary part of the update, it was restarting or something after installation, so I thought nothing of it. Then, after another minute or two, the screen flashed blue and then went completely black.
Puzzled, I waited for another second and the apple logo reappeared as if the iPad was restarting again. However, after a few minutes, this happened again. This has been going on for the last half an hour, and I was wondering has anybody experienced this before.
As I stated in the title, it won't show up in iTunes, and the hardware reset or whatever it's called doesn't work. Also, bear in mind I had issues syncing it with iTunes the night before and it also seemed to crash a few times last night, restarting the iPad and bringing it to the blank screen with the apple logo for a few seconds before going to the lock screen. That didn't happen at all this morning though.
The iPad is not jailbroken, however, it does have licenses for gba4iOS, which is still installed on it, and a VPN license installed on it by the Hola app, which I deleted but never bothered deleting the license for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Colin how are you?
I updated my IPAD yesterday and have the exact same problem.
Itunes does not recognize my ipad. Home and standby also doesnt work.
Also have the blue thing every few minutes and the apple logo but it never goes beyond it.
    Have you solved the issue?

  • Samsung Smart TV Remote and Standby Mode

Hi All - A few months ago I got a Samsung Smart TV that came with a pretty nice remote. It really can control almost all aspects of the FiOS service, but there are a few commands I cannot figure out how to get it to send to the FiOS STB.
First off, when I power on the TV, the STB is still in Stanby mode. It asks for me to "Press Menu to Watch ...". I cannot figure out how to get the Samsung remote to send that command or to disable standby mode on the STB. There is no menu button on this remote that's not TV-specific.
Second, I can't figure out how to bring up the full guide using the remote. By pressing the "up" direction on the four-way button, I get some smaller version of a guide, but I would prefer to see the standard full screen guide.
Finally, is there a way to get to the On Demand and DVR menus using the Samsung remote?
Anway, that's the the scoop. Most other featuers (DVR, etc) work pretty well.
The remote I'm using is a RMCTPF1AP1 and the STB is running version 1.9.7 and build 19.45. It's a QIP7232.
Thanks in advance for any guidance on getting this working.
    Dave

I'm not sure if you are turning the STB off or if the idle timer is doing it.
No reason to turn the STB off as it doesn't save any energy.
So leaving it on would alleviate one issue.

  • CoreCenter and Standby Mode

I have just standby to use Standby Mode, having read the recent article on electricity consumption in PCPro magazine (UK). However after the machine comes out of standby, CoreCenter v1.7.3(set to start on boot and run in the system tray) starts giving an alarm (much like a car alarm siren) ; the only way to stop this is to close CoreCenter and then reopen it when it is fine and no longer gives an alarm. I guess it is confused and thinks there is fan failure or something similar. Does anybody have CoreCenter and Standby running together?Ho do I work out what is causing the alarm?  I have CoolnQuiet enabled in the BIOS, if I do not run CoreCenter will CoolnQuiet still run and what about control of my Zalman 7000 Processor Fan?
    many thanks
    Paul

Dale the fans will still change speed according to the temps but it will be a smaller change and not as quick. CoreCenter does allow better fan control As does Speedfan, MBM and others. Keep in mind that many of us feel CoreCenter is a real turd and do not run it at all so we know it is not needed. You may like it and as such we won't tell you not to run it. However it does not change the fact that it is not needed to make C&Q work.
I'm seeing very little in the way of fan-control on my system with or without corecenter. Last night the CPU temp went from 25C (as measured by PCWiz2005, which matches what corecenter shows) to 42C under 100% load generated by prime95. Fan speed from 25C to 42C ranged from 2343rpm to 2410rpm. Max rpm on startup is around 3300rpm from memory. Is 42C too cool for the corecell chip to consider ramping up the revs on the fan?
On startup the cpu fan is locked at 3300rpm. I have to run corecenter to get it to drop back to 2300rpm.
I'm not seeing anything like reasonable fan-control on this system.

  • Syslogd makes high CPU Load and standby mode doesn´t work.

After updating to Leopard I see high CPU Load caused by syslogd daemon(40%-80%) and my MacBook has problems with standby mode. After stopping the white LED lights and CPU fan speeds up. Is there any chance to fix these problems?

OK.. here's where I'm at with troubleshooting this. As I said before, for ME it occurred simultaneous to a low or out of memory situation. I don't know if syslogd was using my the ram, or if the low ram was a symptom of an issue that syslogd was getting caught up in reporting... but the system log file had tens of THOUSANDS of out of memory errors listed. Almost all were from dashboard.
So... I've done the following. In dashboard I closed ALL open widgets. I disabled spaces (since in another thread someone indicated it used a lot of memory). I ran Leopard Cache Cleaner and used it to perform maintenances, run the os scripts and rebuild caches and so on. Rebooted.
Now its working fine! Since then its been over 24 hrs and I STILL have over 300megs of ram reported free on a 1 gig system. I've used everything else like normal (safari, mail, ichat, itunes, etc..). Where the problem used to happen after a couple of hours after a reboot every time, now it seems normal. No out of mem, and syslogd is running normally (apparently).
I will run a few apps that I havent run in a while and see if those create an issue. If not, later today I will enable spaces and see how that does after a few hours. Finally I'll add in the dashboard widgets one at a time to see if the issue lies there. I'll report back here if I discover anything.

  • 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.3 Linux 64bit new hardware for primary and standby

    Hi
we have 10.2.0.4 on Redhat 64bit
we need to upgrade to 11.2.0.3 new hardware 64 bit
we can afford 12 hours downtime , 600G DB , the DB have a physical standby
    my steps are:-
1- leave the primary 10R2 running
2- restore a backup to the new hardware and upgrade it to 11R2 , make the new 11gR2 a standby for the 10g primary
3- start my outage , shutdown the primary (or swichover to the 11g standby)
4- copy the archived logs manually(if necessary) and apply it to the new 11gR2
5-end my outage and connect my customer to the new 11gR2 on the new hardware
6-create a new 11g standby from a backup of the new 11g primary
    Thanks

    Hello;
A hole in your plan does not jump out at me. But I will give you another idea as food for thought
    1. Stop apply and shutdown the current standby.
    2. Upgrade the current primary to 11gr2
    3. Duplicate ( active ) the primary to the new server ( might create a lock user script so only SYS and SYSTEM can connect )
    4. Unlock accounts and end outage
    5. create a new 11g standby using RMAN duplicate
Yesterday I moved a 100GB database to another server on another SAN can post some details if you have interest.
If I did this I would upgrade first. I used SQL to create the SCP scripts
Will post example. ( shown ) The I replace server_name: or change the SQL to the correct one.
    set heading off
    set feedback off
    set pagesize 80
    set linesize 120
    select 'scp '||a.name ||' server_name:' || a.name as newname from v$datafile a;
--- need way bigger linesize here I used 400
    select 'scp '||a.name ||' server_name:' || a.name as newname from v$controlfile a;
select 'scp '||a.member ||' server_name:' || a.member as newname from v$logfile a;Personally I like the upgrade before the move because you can test separately and it gives all the extra RMAN options. But there's always more than one way to do something like this.
The SCP move take a little longer, but since you move the database cold it just starts up without worrying about a backup.
I generally use a checklist for something like this. I can post my move checklist from yesterday if you want.

  • Oracle RMAN recovery catalog database in a Primary and Standby mode

    Hello All,
The customer wants the RMAN recovery catalog database to be highly available so that none of the RMAN database backup jobs are impacted at the time of taking the database backups. There are are 200+ databases running on OEL, RHEL and Windows. So we planned to host the recovery catalog database on Oracle Active DataGuard 11.2.0.1 Enterprise Edition on RedHat EL 5.8 version on two physical servers. The Primary Instance will be in one server in the Primary DC and the Standby Instance will be on another server in another DC. Also all the database datafiles are hosted in ASM Diskgroups on SAN (DATA, FRA, REDO, ARCH diskgroups).
Are there any specific RPM/patch/OS user custom/specific settings or configurations needed..?
    Thanks in advance..
    Regards,
    Abhijit

"The customer wants the RMAN recovery catalog database to be highly available so that none of the RMAN database backup jobs are impacted at the time of taking the database backups"
    Hi,
i think you can achieve HA for the catalog DB. (Rac and Asm should work fine)
There's no way (afaik) to use TAF with the rman backup. If you have a failure during a backup it simply fails.
There is no TAF in this situation.
    Hope this helps.

  • Virus Updates and PC Mode

    Security Note...
If you use MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials)  the virus definition files will not update if you put your system into SLEEP, HIBERNATE or STANDBY mode.  MSE virus definition files update every day and even sometimes several times a day to keep your system safe from attack.
Microsoft is aware of this problem and have been working on it since November 11, 2009. No fix as yet.
If you are using MSE, make sure you either MANUALLY update the virus definitions every day or SHUTDOWN your system after use.  After a shutdown/reboot or restart the definition files update.
I will post to this location once I find out more. More details at:   social.answers.microsoft.com/forums

    Solved!

As promised...an update:      Applies to WIndow 7, Vista and XP
New release 1.0.1961.0  ( 2/3/2010), laptops & desktops using hibernate/sleep:  problem still not addressed.
N.B.: You can not upgrade to the latest release of MSE by selecting   'UPGRADE'  from the dropdown menu beside 'help'.  If you want the new version, you have to reinstall MSE all over again, or wait for the upgrade to come down via windows updates.
Temporary Workaround for sleep/hibernate:  Reset  your power settings to keep your PC awake.
There is a MSE  catchup utility that checks your system every 24 hours to see if your virus definitions have updated.  Apparently this is the problem.  Some users are also experiencing problems with scheduled scans. These are either not running on schedule or not at all.
Temporary Workaround for Updates and Scans:.
Download splinterware scheduler (freeware).  Follow these setup instructions:
    1. Open a new event.
    2. In Application, enter:        c:\program files\microsoft security essentials\MpCmdRun.exe
    3. In Parameters, enter:     SignatureUpdate
    4. Go to Schedule, enter:   Daily     enter a time that suits you.. Save/exit
    for scans:
    1. Open another event
    2. In Application, enter:      same as above
    3. In Paramters, enter        Scan 1  (quick scan)   or   Scan 2  (full scan)
    4. Set your schedule, save/exit
NB: you obviously have to be online for MSE to update.

  • After Mavericks Update Arris Modem now going to standby mode when iMac sleeps

After installing Mavericks on iMac, whenever the iMac (connected wirelessly to the network with Airport Extreme 5th Gen) goes to sleep it is causing our modem to enter standby mode which limits internet access to all devices on the wireless network even when they are actively requesting data from the internet. As soon as the iMac is woken up the modem comes back out of sleep/standby mode and everything works fine. The modem is connected directly to the Airport Extreme WAN port and all devices just use wireless internet. The only resolution I've found is stopping the iMac from entering sleep mode in Energy Settings but this is not a long term solution. Anyone else having this issue?
The modem we have is an Arris TM722G.
    Thanks in advance.
