Has my copy of Safari been infected?

Allow me to preface my remarks by admitting I'm far from a tekkie, so if you have any ideas make believe your responding to an illiterate and you won't be far off the mark.
Here it goes...
I've been using Safari (currently 5.1.9) for years with few problems but a couple of days ago something weird and nasty started to occur when using the program.
When I go to intended sites (not this one, fortunately) I'm often getting automatically redirected seconds later to unrelated sites. The redirects relate to nothing that would be clickable from the page I was on. Also, when not redirected, I'm receiving bogus pop-up messages that always emerge from the bottom of the page and ask me if I'm searching for more information on whatever key words it randomly picks off the current page. The alleged "host" of this ruse appears to change with every invitation to click. The problems occur no matter if I use a preexisting bookmark, Safari search or type in the URL from scratch. I've always had AdBlock activated but I don't think these "ads" are being generated by any legimate (albeit out of control) organization. This is some form of cyber attack.
For examples: if I go to The New Yorker Magazine, a few seconds after the intended page opens I'm redirected to a bogus page (like wedding planning) that has no link from the page I was on. The redirects are usually to some dumb ad page, bogus or otherwise but a recent attempt to go to the New York Times site was redirected after a second to CNN's home page. The redirects are never to the same page. The next time I attempt to go to the NYT home page I might end up on a site allegedly selling discount diapers. If I click the Previous Page button in an attempt to return to the intended page I never know where I'm going to end up but seldom is it the intended page. For intance, when I tried to return to the NYT site after being redirected to CNN there was an (apparently) failed attempt to redirect me to so someplace called paid2saveclub.com with a message saying "Safari can't open this page" due to a "dropped connection." These redirects are totally random and never seem to repeat the exact pattern. I can sometimes visit an intended page and it appears to work fine then go haywire again on the next visit. It doesn't seem to matter whether I use a bookmark, a Safari search to find a home page or type in a URL from scratch to reach the page. I can pick a site that I've never visited before and have the same experience.
I'm sure the pop-up issue is connected to the redirect problem because they started simutaneously.
Additionally I'm now occasionally seeing a tiny red x (or crossed swords) appear near the middle of the page I'm visiting (or think I'm visiting). First noticed it a day or two after the other problems began so I assume it's related.
To date, I've cleared my Safari cache and tried a reset. Ran both ClamX and ESET Cyber Security apps but they have found no issues.
Short of trashing everything associated with Safari, including all of my accumulated bookmarks, I don't know what to do - and I'm not even sure that would solve the problem. It's relentless and I'm tearing out what's left of my gray hair.
Incidentally, I tried using my prexisting copy of Firefox and that seems to be working normally at the moment (just don't like it). For what it's worth, my email appears to be working fine, too, so for the moment I assume the attack is isolated to Safari.

There's an easy way to avoid re directs. Use a different DNS service ...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
Click + and type:
208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
208.67.220.220
Click Ok.
Quit and relaunch Safari.
Ran both ClamX and ESET Cyber Security apps but they have found no issues.
Having both ClamX and ESET Cyber Security installed is overkill. Delete the ESET app.
Best way to delete not only the application and all the associated files is to use App Cleaner.

The best way to keep your Mac safe is to make sure the system software up to date at all times.
Open System Preferences > Software Update. Select the top two boxes.
If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to make changes. You may be prompted for your admin password to procede.

Log out and log back in, if you haven’t done so recently. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.

The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
If you get no output from either step, you're not infected with any variant of Flashback that I know of.

Again, without knowning what problems you are having, it's difficult to tell you what you need to do. The most recent problems have involved the Flashback Trojan which has caused crashes of Safari and other applications or redirection of your browser to ad sites. There's a tool here which should get rid of that, if you are infected.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Trovi," "Conduit," or "SearchProtect" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove these files in the same way:

One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
"SearchProtect" may be distributed along with two other applications: "MacKeeper," which is a scam, and "ZipCloud," which, if not actually a scam, has a dubious reputation. Ask if you need instructions to remove those items.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)

Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)

Is this a genuine error message 'ipad has been infected with potential virus'

II was just about to watch a film through my iPad and a new screen opened 'phone updating.com' and the message read 'Virus warning, ipad has been infected with potential virus. Click the ok button to scan your iPhone now.'
I didn't press ok and it wouldn't let me cross out so I checked and updated to the latest version (8.2) and when my ipad restarted, safari opened it on the same error page. I then went to settings and cleared my Safari history which thankfully clearly the page.
My concern now is what if I have something bad (virus?) on my iPad? Or im hoping that because I didn't click okay that all is okay again.
can anyone advise if they have come across anything similar or if I need to do something else?

Thanks, that's what I thought. Do you know if there was any other way that I could have cleared the message other than by clearing my safari history, and more importantly, as I didn't click okay, would this have stopped anything else happening to my ipad?

I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month. It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone. Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word. The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer. It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have. The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up. If it pulls up at all. I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean. I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks. I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either. I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me. I do remember when I believe my computer became infected: I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected. I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late. I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all. I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer. It refuses to uninstall. The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible. Install ClamXav and run a scan with that. It should pick up any trojans.

I recently was asked to download an Adobe Acrobat reader update but before I was made aware that the current virus was contained in a similar request, I downloaded what I assumed to be a legit update. I currently do not use my mail program on my Mac so am unaware of any spam being distributed from the computer. How can I identify if my computer has been infected with this Trojan Horse virus?

Since the only thing needed in that box is the small piece of paper with the (very long) registration code on it (usually found inside the booklet), see if that is actually there and, if it is, call Apple at 800-275-2273 and ask to be transferred to the Applecare department. If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test.
Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

You may have installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
          Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:

Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:

~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
          Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Copy-into-Safari causes crash of all, in 10.4 & 10.5

My two computers -- iMac with 10.4.11 & Safari 3.2, and MB-Pro with 10.5.6 & Safari 3.2.1 with no Safari plug-ins -- are stable except sometimes when I "copy" into Safari (in URL field or a web-page field) which causes the Spinning Ball to appear, and when I use Force Quit Applications (Command-Option-Esc) Safari is "not responding".
Then most (but not all) other programs, both from Apple and third-parties like Word 2004, begin doing the same thing by "not responding" and sometimes even Finder crashes and I have to force Shutdown by pushing and holding the power-key. Has this common problem (for me) also occurred for others?

It might be easier to upload the whole crash log to a free file hosting service, such as http://rapidshare.com/
     This requires a program to use, but after a "copy-into-Safari crash" nothing works. Catch-22.
The log file should be under:
Hard drive > Users > YourUsername > Library > Logs > CrashReporter > Safari.crash.log
     "should be" but isn't -- I already checked this log 4 days ago (because a page I found by searching for "mac crash log" said to look there) but in it the last file listed is January 15, and there have been many crashes since then.
     4 days ago I also found a page in Wikipedia -- (CrashReporter_(Mac_OSX) -- which said to look in /System/Library/CoreServices/Crash Reporter.app. Crash Reporter
but evidently this existed in Tiger but doesn't exist in Leopard (someone else has an "update request" about this, so they couldn't find it either) and I haven't found any useful info from likely-named entries like Problem Reporter (it's an app that doesn't do anything when it's double-clicked, it probably is triggered automatically by a crash to produce the window with a HUGE amount of info that I cannot copy because after a crash nothing works) plus ReportCrash and ReportPanic (each produces a window with only a few lines of trivial info). And all of these 3 have not been updated since December or November.
    So... is there a permanent record anywhere? If yes, where is it?

Safari is infected with adware

Safari has been compromised by some adware virus. It takes over the preferences and will not let me change them.
I cannot delete Safari to re-install it. I reinstalled Yosemite, but Safari remained infected.
Is there anything I can do? The only answer I found so far is to just use another browser app like Firefox.
