HD video newbie question related to camera shooting mode

Hi everyone
I apologize in advance as this has been covered (sort of) but I cannot definitively answer my question reading other posts so perhaps your answers will clarify this for myself and future interested parties.
I am ready to purchase a Canon HF S100 VIXIA camcorder after looking at a lot of reviews.
I have iMovie9 and will be using this exclusively (I hope?)
I am aware that if I edit anything or add transitions or image stabilization the video will be downgraded to SD, this is not related to my topic.
Questions follow
The camera supports 24p Cinema mode and 30p mode. Both of these shoot at 24 or 30 frames per second in HD using 60i which I presume means that each progressive frame is encoded in two sequential interlaced frames which must be combined (or something like that). I would like to use this mode as it has much better low light performance and I have a lot of indoor use, BUT---
Will iMovie9 support this and display the video as a HD progressive scan frame or will it discard this information and keep it as 60i or fail or something else?
Thanks for your help.

afaik, most (all?) consumer camcorders, claiming '24p' (or Cinema or...), scale on export (or record) to 60i ..
for me, this '24p' is mostly marketing... 24fps is a historic 'standard' for film/celluloid. in times, when displays claim 200fps, .. why 24? why not simple 29.97/30p (or here: 25)...?

  • Flash Video Newbie Question

    Hello
I 've recently put a flash video on my site and used this code:
    <object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
    codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,16,0"

    value="satdirect.swf" /> <param name="quality"
    value="high" /><param name="play" value="false" />

    pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"
    type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="240"
    width="360"></object>
The video works but there's no play button (works only with right click and play). Does adobe flash have play/control buttons?
    Please advice me..

are your trying to display a swf only or a video (flv)?
if an flv, you can get flash to display controls by using an flvplayback component.  if a swf, you'll need to add your own buttons to play and stop your swf.
in either case, that's not complete embedding code.  use the html file published by flash.

  • Newbie question related to structured document saving to XML

I am Framemaker newbie working on existing Help File documents. I figured out how to updated different modules and steps but having problems adding new module headings as when it is saved to XML the anchoring, not sure if that is the correct term, is off by one. And I can no find where or how to update the anchors. I am using 7.0 with XP Pro. Thanks

Russ - thanks for the reply and apologize for not providing more details. I have a Help File document written in Framemaker. I have had no training on Framemaker but given the task of updating the file. The Help File contains numerous Module Headings that have anchors. When the Help File is used witihin our application - if a user clicks help, it automatically opens to that section of the help file that the user is currently in. I need to add a new module heading, so I tired copying and pasting an existing part of the document and modified but that somehow thru off the anchors when if exports to xml. I hope this make sense as I am just learning the tool myself. Thanks

  • Shooting video for DVD. Which camera setting?

I'm shooting a video with a HD only camera (Canon XF300). I was wondering what were the best settings for the camera, since I'll be burning a DVD for my client. I'm thinking 1280 X 720 at 30p. Does this make any difference at the end? Should I shoot at 60i instead?
    Thanks for the help.

It shouldn't make any noticeable difference what you shoot but it's always best to do a quick test.
Shoot a couple of minutes of similar footage at both settings, capture it, add a few transitions and burn to DVD.
The whole exercise will take well under 30 minutes and will show you exactly what to expect.

  • Shooting a video with the built in camera?

    Hi,
How do you shoot a video with your built in camera on the new iMac? Is this possible? If so what are the steps (or a website to direct me too?) involved and what format will it be in when it's done? I know using Quicktime Pro I can change the format later for a blog, website or Powerpoint. How do you find the code for the video (like the inbed code you see on youtube to upload a video onto a blog?
    Thanks,
    S.

  • Audio Sync , 2 camera shoot: Need Project Advice

    Hi Friends,
Question for you from a newbie who will be shooting my first "major" project tonight:
I'll be shooting a 6 minute video with two mini DV cameras, each at different fixed angles. The subjects are talking heads.
In addition, I will be recording a live audio (speech vocals) track onto a computer, which I later must sync with the camera audio. Ultimately, this audio will replace the camera-captured audio.
Since I will importing the raw video and audio feeds into FCE 3.5, and then cutting it up, I don't want to lose sync between video and the separate (imported) audio track.
Is there a way to sync the video track with the audio track, then "import the audio track into the video track as its new "native" audio (i.e. meld them together into one track, replacing its original audio track)?
Or, is there a better way to approach this project?
    Thanks much for your advice.
    DJ

You're assuming the the two will sync up, which they might. You didn't say how you're making the live recording in FCE, but mostly likely it's going to be in 44.1. You'll need to convert that to 48K.
The best approach, if possible, is to take the sound recording and feed it to the two cameras so they can record it directly as they shoot the picture. If that's not possible and you have to make a separate recording I'd connect up the sound to the camera tracks.
Lay the camera A video and audio in the timeline. Turn on the audio waveforms. Put the separate audio into the timeline underneath. Sync up the audio and video. Delete the camera audio and link the separate audio to the camera A video. Drag that back to the browser and make it a master clip. Repeat the process for camera B.

  • 5 camera shoot

I am getting ready to shoot a roller derby bout for my sister's roller derby league. I plan on using 5 cameras. A roller derby track is a basic oval and they skate in a counter clockwise circle. I will have two cameras shoting the corners and two cameras shooting the straightaways. The 5th camera will be one I free hand for close ups and such. My question is, is there a way to layer all 5 shots so they are synched up in FCE. Then I can just pick the track I want for a certain shot and then switch when they go by to the next camera which has them in view. The main reason I want them synched up is for the audio. They will have two guys calling the bout over a PA system, but I don't have the equipment to record just their audio, so I will have to use audio from a camera. I do plan on just using on camera's audio for the whole bout, so the sound doesn't change volume as the camera changes. I just shot my son's band concert just using two cameras, and made the cardnal mistake of turning off my hand held camera when I would do something else for a few minutes, so now I am having to manualy synch them together and its A PAIN!!! I can't imagine haveig to do it with 5 tracks. My two cameras are older models, and the other three belong to the girls, so I'm not sure what types they are. I do know they all use Hi8 tapes. I can't get FCE to capture any video, so I import the tape into iMovie, and they do a drag and drop into FCE from imovie. I do have to render the audio, but it seems to be the easiest way for me to transfer my footage into FCE. So my question is, how do I synch up all my camera, or is that impossible? This is my first "real" job with multi cameras and I want to do it right and not have to take 4 months to turn out their product. Thanks for any input.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
A big challenge in perspective. As you noted from your previous experience, it's very important to keep all cameras rolling along the race. If you can use a sort of clapper board signal (like a air horn shot, the start signal or a camera flash) it will be easier to synch all your material. This point can be anywhere in the clip as it is present in all clips.
Pay attention that camcorders supplied by "girls" must record in a compatible format for FCE. And use 16 bit audio for all.
Your analog Hi8 must be a problem but you can use a DV camcorder with analog in converter to output signal through firewire. To avoid pitfall, try to use 5 DV camcorders from start.
Once material captured into FCE, open each long clip in viewer and find the synch point (air horn or flash or anything else recorded on each camera). Put a marker exactly at this point. Repeat for each clips.
Put each clip on a video track in timeline and synch the markers. From this point it's better to use one audio (the better one- you can even record the audio with a digital audio recorder), so mute the other audio tracks.
Use one video track as your camera A roll, put it on V1 and lock this track.
All other clip (camera B rools) must be keep in synch,. To monitor all your 5 angles, scale all clips to a 20% scale (in motion tab) and position them in mosaïc in canvas.
You can now play the timeline and use razor blade to cut angles. Delete unwanted portions (you will be able to use those portions later with the roll tool). This is a tedious and long work, but be patient.
Once all the material will be cut, reset the scale to 100% for each clips on V1-2-3-4-5.
You will get many angle from A and B rolls with a main audio. You can mix different parts from audio as audio related to V2-3-4-5 are available but muted in timeline.
Piero, a fellow contributor on this forum, has designed a custom plugin to use 4 clips in multicamera mode, but as you use 5 cameras I think it's better to scale clip by hand.
If you can, try a test shots with 3 camera before the "J" day...

  • Video Capture Question

I have a pretty basic question.  I have been using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for the past few weeks and am positive this was an excellent purchase.  It does what I need and more (I have taken several tutorials and understand basic functions fairly well).  For my old data which was recorded on Mini-DV format (the new stuff is 1080P on SSD so it does not apply for my new stuff), my basic question is will capturing in CS5 using the DV out of my old camcorder provide the "same, better or lesser" results compared to using a specialized hardware converter.  I will most likely get a response of "it depends", but would like guidance for those that have used CS5.  I have used a hardware converter in the past with OK results.
Sorry for the newbe question, but would like a quick response if anyone has time.  BTW - my PC is new build for video editing, has plenty of power and I do have mercury playback capability.
    Thanks in advance.

I also have RCA jacks on the camera, however, no matter how good the A/D converter is (if using the RCA jacks), the firewire will still be the best.
Well, you basically have two different things there--yes, it's one camera, but you can use it to do two different things.
On one hand, if you have miniDV tapes, the Firewire is the only connection you'll use. At that point, you're not transferring video in the traditional sense, but rather you're effectively copying from the tape to your hard drive. Whatever is on the miniDV tape is the same as what you will end up with on the hard drive. The analog connections (the RCA jacks) won't be used for this process at all. So if you're talking about DV video, it's as good as it gets.
On the other hand, if you have some sort of analog tape like VHS or Hi8, you need to have an A/D converter between the tape deck and the computer--this is where the analog connections on the camera would come in to play. The basic map in this case is:
Analog deck -> RCA cable (or other analog connection) -> DV camera as an A/D converter -> 1394 cable (Firewire) -> computer
In this case, the better the analog signal is that you feed to the A/D converter, the better the captured digital video would look. Obviously, there are all sorts of variables here--playback deck, type of analog connections, quality and features of the A/D converter, and the DV codec itself--you can control some of those, and some you really can't, depending on what you have access to. If you're not dealing with analog video, though, you don't have to worry about any of this

  • Multi cam shoot using  P2 cards. How to move clis to timecode positions

multi cam shoot using P2 cards. How to move clis to timecode positions. We were using free TC. I want to a large # of clips from both cams. and have them move to the correct TC position on the timline. In Nuendo eith audio u hit apple a or ctrl a right click move to orgin. Avid will take care of it for u. FCP???

If you read the "Apple Pro Training Sereis; Final Cut Pro 5" book, it's very easy. You can sync the clips manually by setting In or Out points, specifying TC, or using one of the two Aux TC fields. Since this is the first, and most basic step in doing Multiclip editing, I'd suggest you get the book, or read the appropriate section of the User Manual. I don't think anyone wants to post a full "how to" article in a forum.
It can be done, you're clips have to all have been recorded with synced TC, or they simply won't sync up in any NLE. Read the book. Cause even if I did have the time to explain FCP's Multiclip editing in this forum, you'd still have questions that are in the book.
If you actually walk through the first steps of building a Multiclip to edit, it's blatatnly obvious in the first step. I'd give it a try first.
Problem is the DVCPRO-HD codec is going to require a higher end Mac with tons of RAM and either RAID, or internal drives to do a DVCPRO-HD Multiclip, as DVCPRO-HD (P2) is a pretty high bandwidth codec. I use it daily, I know, it takes horsepower to do.

  • Total Newbie Question ... Sorry :-(

I know it's a windows thing, and I am now converted to Mac but I gotta know this because it's doing my head in. It's a complete stupid green gilled newbie question.
When installing new programs on a Mac can you create shortcuts to the programs on the Dock? I did what I THOUGHT it would be, i.e I made an Alias and stuck it in the dock, but on rebooting my Mac later on, in place of the shortcuts where 3 question marks which when clicked on did absolutely nothing???
    Help?

You aren't installing something from a dmg file are you? The dmg is a disk image – kind of a virtual CD. So when you double click the dmg and then get the little disk/hardrive/custom icon on your desktop that is the same as if you had mounted a CD. You then need to drag the application off of that "CD" into your application folder. Then it is truly installed.
You can then "eject" the icon your your desktop. This is what happens when you shutdown and without remounting the image your dock shortcut can't find the original.
    Just a thought.

  • MacBook Pro display usable as a reference monitor for a camera shoot?

I am shooting a video project and wish to try and use my 17" Mac Pro display screen as a reference monitor on a live mini-DV camera shoot for focus and color versus lugging around a heavier CRT and battery back. Will the MacPro display be sufficient to significantly judge color, exposure, and focus? I know it's not ideal, but with improvements in LCD displays over the last few years I would like to hear from other users who may have tried using their display screens in this way and see what their results were.
    Many thanks,
    John

While the answer in itself is probably no, you could however spend some time to get yourself a known comparitive situation. With some careful calibration and comparison to a final result you should be able to get it to a point where, while not perfect, you know what you're going to get.
By the way, the matte display will produce far more consistent colour than the glossy display.
Utlimately though for the best results the suggested CRT solution is the one to go for even though it's somewhat a pain.

  • Video newbie needs help with multicam editing

    Hi all,
My video editing experience is limited to a few iMovie projects, which you can view on YT (search for TheChampsTube).  For our final gig we did a 3 camera shoot, which was supposed to be produced by the videographer.  But he dropped the ball, and now I have the files - a motley assortment of m2t, mp4, xml and sfk - I'm converting with Handbrake.  My ancient iMac can't run FCP X so that's out. Also, I'm on a low budget, and will probably only need the software for this one project.  Can someone recommend an inexpensive way for me to get this footage assembled? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    You could try this technique.
Or borrow a friend's Mac that supports FCP X and download the trial.
    Good luck.

  • Question related to concept of PCK

    Hi All.
I am quite a newbie to XI and am only learning it thru online help. I have one conceptual question related to PCK.
My understanding is that PCK is needed by a small business company to communicate to its larger partner which already has XI running. Correct me if I am wrong here itself.
Now if the larger business partner already has XI, why does the smaller one need a PCK at all? The XI instance on the larger partner will have all the necessary adapters to understand any format send by the partner. So even if the partner(smaller) sends any format- be it IDOC/HTTP/FTP, the XI instance on larger partner will have its adapters ready to perform the conversion.
Then why is this PCK needed at all?
Thanks in advance. Hope my query is clear
    Regards.
    Samant

    Hi Samant,
Your question is a very good one, Though I have not worked on PCK, I can share my ideas based on some brain storming session I had with our collegues & business partners.
While executing projects, there are technical & operational issues. For example, when you access any HR related data of a UK based organisation then all those who work on that project have to undertake data security pledge. Like wise there are many constraints on data & system accesses, which vary across organisations.
When you use PCK*, irrespective of different systems what the small vendors have, you communicate with your Big company's XI system only on the XI's msging protocol http(s)/SOAP. This allows a fair amount of ownership of data/access related issues to the small partners.
-> you go for PCK, when there is no need for small vendors to go for XI.
Hope this is of some help. As Michal said there might be much more (or even better) reasons.
Michal, when you say "all of the mappings and transformations have to be on the small company side", what exactly you mean by this. can you please eloborate.
    Thanks & Regards
    Vishnu
