HD Video Playback performance in LR 4.3 - help!

Colleagues,
I'm a new LR user but experienced video editor.  I am exporting video from Final Cut Pro 7 and importing these files into LR4.3, renaming and applying metadata during import.  I'm not doing any develop work on the videos, that's all been done in FCPro.
This is my work, not fun, so your help is very much appreciated:
I'm running LR4.3 on:
OS Mac 10.6.8 laptop
Processor is 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Du0
4 GB 667 MHz DDRS SD RAM
128MB RadeonX 1600 card
120GB Hard drive with 25BG free.
I know this gear is old.  But it copes fine with massive projects in Final Cut Pro 7.
Catalogue and data live on a 12TB 4Big Quadra LaCie Drive connected by Firewire 800 to laptop.
Preview.lrdata and all presets live in same folder on Quadra as the catalogue file.
I'm having no trouble playing back 780x576 SD Video in LR4.3 (I'm on PAL as I'm in Australia btw)
I'm having a hard time playing back 1920x1200 or 1440x1080 HD video.  The playback just hangs or is very jumpy.  Doesn't matter if the file size is 30MB or 250MB, same problem.  My clips are not more than 60sec long.
I am using one catalog which looks at several folders.
These files play fine in Quicktime.
I have trying moving my physical data to the Desktop/hard drive but same problem.
I have tried creating a new catalog and reimporting files.  Same problem.
I regularly optimize and back up the catalog.
I've unchecked the video cache size in file handling preferences.
I close down all other software when running LR.
I close down Histogram and Navigator and any other stuff I don't need in LR.
I have recreated metadata and filename presets in a new catalog just in case these were corrupt
.. all to no avail.  My HD videos just do not play back smoothly.
If you are an expert/s, could you please tell me:
Is it my hardware?
Could it be a codec problem?
Is there a correct/best codec for LR HD video import files?
I know my hardware is old - what do you recommend for Mac?
Is anyone else out there importing files which have exported from Final Cut Pro?
Are you by chance importing HD video from Canon 5D/7D cameras (something else I have to do).  If so, are you having any playback problems with this as well?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide,
Best wishes,
Kez

Thanks for the info.  I find it frustrating because I thought I left it long enough to generate previews.  I am going to try marking all of the files I want to delete before actually deleting them.  This way when I get to the renaming/keywording phase I will have fewer files for it to deal with and hopefully it will be faster.

  • Trouble with video playback on .mov files. Please help!

I have some .mov files that were transferred onto a USB and they're not working properly. The audio during playback works fine but the screen remains black for the entire video. There are 45 videos and all have the same issue. Already tried them on QuickTime (latest version), Windows Media Player, Divx, Movie Maker and Powerdirector. Nothing seems to be working. Tried downloading a couple of Codecs as well.
It's probably something really silly but I'm out of ideas. Anyone?

    Hi Bazookajoe117,
As already suggested by Jacumba your symptoms point to a lack of required codec in your system.
Take a look at below post to find out the commonly used codecs in QT that would allow you to play the files without any issue.

  • Video Playback Error In iTunes. Any Help?

Hey. I just got a video from the iTunes store (TV Show), and it won't display on my pc. It plays just fine on the iPhone, but on the monitor it shows up as a green screen with pixelated sections. No audio, no video. Any suggestions? I've already tried everything in support.

    Hey sb521,
If you can play other videos in QuickTime Player like the Movie trailers available through QuickTime or FREE ON iTunes content. The issue may be with the content you've downloaded. You may have to contact the iTunes Store support group: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/
If you cannot play the FREE ON iTunes content or Movie trailers in iTunes or Quicktime PLayer, the issue may be related to the software on your PC.
Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX, this article has a link.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24382
You also may want to try uninstalling any codec packs or QuickTime plugins that you've installed.

  • YouTube App Video Playback Poor Performance

Not sure when or what changed but video playback performance on my iPod Touch 4G when using the YouTube app has been very poor the last couple months. Used to work just fine. The performance has been so bad that I basically gave up watching YouTube videos on my iPod. By bad performance I mean it would literally take 10 minutes to watch a 2 minute video (estimating of course). And I would get chunks of about 20 seconds before I had to wait while the video would buffer again.
I know this is due to my connection speed as video playback using the YouTube app at other locations that have a faster speed still worked fine.I think my home connection is up to 5 MB download but I actually only get around 4 MB. But still, this should be just fine as it used to work. Also, NetFlix and FaceTime work just fine at home. The YouTube app should be able to determine the video quality based on your connection for streaming. But it now longer seems to do that.
Talked to Apple tech support and they had me reset my iPod which did not help. But they had me try using Safari instead of the YouTube app. By using Safari and going to YouTube.com video playback on my iPod Touch was just fine. Videos would buffer more quickly then they would play. Even if I left HQ on, video playback was fine. Go figure? Something definitely seems wrong with the YouTube app.
So I thought I'd post this in case anyone else was searching for a solution. This works for me.
Seems like the YouTube app needs to be updated. Mentioned this to Apple tech support but was told Google would be responsible for that and they doubt it will be done due to YouTube no longer using flash. Hmmmm, the app seems pretty integrated into iOS as the app comes installed and can not be uninstalled.

    See:
iOS: Troubleshooting applications purchased from the App Store
Try when connected to another network to help determine if it is a network problem
Contact the developer/go to their support site if only one app.
    Restore from backup. See:

  • Slow video playback in Photoshop Elements 11

Playback of videos directly in Photoshop Elements Organizer is very slow. Video is stuttering.
Playing the same video outside of PSE11 with Windows Media Player is much better. Video plays without any stuttering.
Looks like the internal video player of PSE11 is very poor and provides slow performance.
What can I do do have the same video performance with the PSE11 player as I have with WMP.
I use Windows 7 64 Bit (8 GB RAM) with a Intel Core i3 (2330). This CPU has enough power to playback HD or Full-HD videos without any stuttering!!!
Why can't the internal play of PSE11 Organizer play my videos without stuttering - like WMP 12.0.7601.18150 does?
    Regards,
    Dodson65

The videos I use are created with different devices.
I have HD videos taken with a Pentax DSLR and I have Full-HD videos taken with a Windows Phone 8 device.
Both playback on my Laptop without any stottering with different software. I checked WMP and VLC. Even when using my Laptop with energy-saving profile these videos can be played without stottering.
When I playback the videos in PSE11 Organizer I don't want to edit them - just playback. So why should the internal player behave different? I agree with you - this might be different when I playback the videos in Premiere Elements 11 (as this is a video editing software). But when using Photoshop Elements 11 I want to be able to playback videos in the same performance as I can do with WMP or VLC. If Photoshop Elements 11 can't do that - why? The organizer of PSE11 is not an editor. It should be able to playback videos the same way (with the same performance) as other players on my laptop.
Can you please explain this sentence: "Have you started a Premiere Elements project yet that uses this video's specs? This will often trigger Premiere Elements to download the necessary components for interpretting the video." Is there anything I can do to improve video playback performance?

  • Slow video playback in very high resolution X11

Hi everyone. I write this msg for ask your eternal knowledgement.
I have a very huge system (i7 3820 LGA2011, 8Gb quad channel, Gigabyte x79-up5-wifi, AMD HD5870 2Gb Eyefinity 6, etc) running Arch on it. The OS is updated. The Arch config is very minimal, using Fluxbox as WM and VLC and Mplayer to playback videos. The video driver is the latest stable Catalyst (13.4) and so on. I got connected six HD screens seted to a resolution of 1366x768. These screens are managed with xrandr, adjusted for considering the bezel compensation, using xrand --output MONITOR --pos X+BEZELxY+BEZEL.
When i play a video with mplayer (using the gl video driver) the movie shows very well and smooth, but when i pan the video all over de virtual screen (4194x1583 aprox), the movie shows very choppy.
The strange fact is the Conky reports shows me an 5% of CPU usage, so the system performance are not the problem.
The mplayer flags that i use to play this video are plenty, being the threads=4, gl:ati-hack and -root the most important.
If anyone can give me a hint to solve this issue, i would be very grateful.
    thx in advance.

  • Poor video playback with Windows XP

    Hi all,
I am trying to play TV shows that bought from the ITMS (Xena & Star Trek remixed originals). I seem to be getting poor video playback performance. The video is briefly freezing and skipping. The frame rate is also not very good.
    System specs:
    2.6GHz P4 with hyperthreading enabled
    2GB RAM
Matrox Parhelia 128 video card (latest drivers and firmware)
    Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum
WinXP Pro SP2 + latest hotfixes
    iTunes 7.2
I bought my first TV show after upgrading to iTunes 7.2 so I can't compare performance with v7.1 or earlier. I've tried playing the videos from a local IDE (D:, 60GB free out of 120GB) and from my 1TB Buffalo Terastation (RAID 5, 750GB). The performance is the same. The CPU activity varies from 75% to 95% CPU usage while playing the videos.
Even though my Matrox Parhelia is 3 years old it is still one of Matrox's top performance video cards and does excelent 2D and pretty good 3D.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steven

You're leaping to a conclusion that isn't supported by any facts. Just because you are having a problem is not an indictment of Safari 4. I'm having no trouble, nor are millions of other users, so that destroys your thesis. The problem is something that was a pre-existing condition on your Mac.
Did either of you Repair Disk Permission before and after installing it? If not, start with that. Do you have the most recent version of Flash installed? If not, download the Flash uninstaller from the Adobe web site, then the lastest Flash installer and run those, then restart Safari and test it on some video.

I want to watch videopodcasts via iTunes fullscreen on my external Monitor/TV. It works fine with Quicktime and WindowsMediaPlayer but iTunes doesn't play my Videos in Fullscreen on my external Monitor.
I had the idea it is because the overlay mode isn't siwtched on but I can't find where to setup the display mode of video playback in iTunes.
    Can anybody help me?
    Bernd.

    oh, no...
i thouhght the iTunes Videoplayback would rely on Quicktime and thus it would be possible.
    isn't there any other possibilty?

Hmmm. I think you might have two different things going on there.
For iTunes (the PC), try starting with the "Disable Direct3D acceleration" section from the following document:

For the iPod, try the following document:

  • Slow/unresponsive video playback, media pending, after CC'14 October update

Encountering a strange issue after the October update. It's a project carried over from the previous CC'14 version, nothing crazy, about an 18 minute timeline of video/.mov clips straight off a JVC GY-HM600U with simple RGB curves/masks on some clips, some Prores422 clips of graphics exported out of After Effects, a couple nested sequences featuring simple text w/ cross dissolves, and a lower 3rd Quicktime with RGB+Alpha. There are some linked AE comps in the project but not in the sequence. Ran fine before update. Here's my system, obviously no CUDA so Mercury Playback is software only:
Upon opening the project everything is fine, playback is smooth, scrubbing from beginning to end no problem. After a period of time, 10-15 minutes? Suddenly video playback hangs up, with audio continuing to play after . Opening a clip in the Source window displays the Media Pending thumbnail, after 15 seconds it seems to find the media but again it's only a still frame with video hanging up. Then audio seems to hang up and I can't do anything. I can still manipulate the UI but scrubbing through the timeline is completely unresponsive, pressing play does nothing.
Quitting the program seems to freeze it, the window closes but it stays lit up in my dock and shows Application Not Responding, causing me to force quit.
A system reboot yesterday seemed to clear the issue up for the remainder of the work day but it's back today. Not sure where the issue is coming from, but seems like some kind of memory leak or something similar since it seems to be a gradual degradation in performance. I'll have to roll back to a previous version to finish up this project until things are fixed.

    Hello,
Many thanks for your very long reply and your interest in my problems.
I shall try to answer you :
    - 1) OS :  Windows 7 64 bits Pro SP1, french,
                     Version : 6.1.7601.18247 (Win7RTM)
                     Framework.NET : 4.0.30319.18408 built by : FX451RTMGREL)
                     DirectX : 11.0,
                     OpenGL : 6.1.7600.16385 (Win7_rtm.090713-1255).
    - 2) Yes the media pending goes away but after a couple of minutes (one
year ago I was using PP CS6 and Encore CS6, I never had this problem
    even with very long files),
    - 3) Yes my GPU driver is updated (Nvidia GeForce 332.21 dated 12/19/2014).
I never had thiese problems with PP CS6 + Encore CS6 and my projects
built with these PP ans Encore version were with the same structure and
length (in PP CS6 : sequences up to 45 minutes, in Encore CS6 chapters
    up to the same time).
The difference between are in my hardware :
    - the RAM was upgraded from 12 GB to 24 GB,
    - the CPU was overclocked from 3,2 GHz (default) to 3,88 GHz).
    - 4) I shall try up to the disk burn to check if the problem is just due
    to display of "animated buttons".
I hope my answer will be usefull for you.
    Regards,
    Jacques Gourier.

  • Link editor to video playback?

Does anyone know how to link edit functions with playback from the video track? In Pro Tools and Soundtrack Pro you can move or trim a clip and the video playback immediately jumps to where you're performing your edit. This way you can get spot effects in exactly the right place really quickly. I'm a total beginner in Audition, so forgive me if this is really obvious and basic. (I have spent three hours on this now, though!)

Have you successfully opened and inserted the video on a separate video track in Audition's Multitrack view? You have to be editing the audio in the Multitrack view in order for your editing cursor to be in sync with the video. Although there are some settings in Audition's Preferences to synchronise cursors across views which might help you achieve what you want. "Preferences/General/Synchronize selection etc. across files in Waveform view" and "Preferences/Multitrack Clips/Synchronize clips with Waveform editor".
