Headphone port noise on new MBP?

I'm a new Mac user. In september this year, I bought my first Apple computer, a C2D MBP 895. After a few days, I found a problem, my MBP headphone output port have a quiet but ubiquitous static. It is present only when the audio is playing, and ceases within a second after audio stop. And sometimes there is a different noise which is just like the old radio tuning sound. Also, it happened after audio playing, and sustained disappear after a few seconds.
I have tried everything I can do to solve these problems, even reinstalled OSX, but problems still exist.
Is there anybody know this issue? What should I do next?

I have the same problem and posted a few days ago in this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1004945&tstart=135
It seems to be a general problem - I went to my local apple store, and found the same problem on other models in the store.
It's **** annoying - but it seems that it can be 'solved' by using headphones with higher impedans, which apparently should make the noise and bleeps unnoticeable.

  • "Cloc" noise om new MBP

    Hi,
I have been owning a brand-new mbp for a week and I noticed today that it produced a quite strange and disturbing noise.
This noise resembles the noise that occurs when you turn volume up. You can only imagine your tongue claping in your mouth. It's sounds like "cloc" It comes from the left of the keyboard.
I would really like to fix it.
    Thanks
PS:I apologize for my poor english

After some research, the sound is quite like the sound "tink" in apple mail prefs.

  • Humming noise in new MBP

Well, the latest firmware fixed the trackpad issues that I was having. Way cool!
Now yesterday, a new problem developed which I wondered if anyone else had experienced. Yesterday, when returning to my desk, I realised that my MBP was making a humming noise. It is not super loud and if I had bad hearing, I probably wouldn't notice it. So instead of being super quiet and the occasional clicking of the hard drive, I have a continuous low level humming noise. My guess is that it is fan noise.
Has any experienced this? It is a little obnoxious and I can live with it if need be, so what would help is whether any of you would advise that I pursue sorting this out or just living with it!

Mine has had the exact same issue for 3 weeks now. Moving my left hand around on the palm rest causes the right palm rest (above the hard drive) to buzz intermittently, depending on the pressure and position of my left hand.
I've completely uninstalled and re-installed the HD (including mounting screws) but no luck. Since the buzz appears whenever my left hand applies pressure to the palm rest, I tried re-seating the battery, but no luck either.
The buzz disappears if I press down on the right palm rest. I think it's something with the rigid construction of the unibody and how uneven pressure on the palm rests changes the vibration/sound dampening qualities of the hard drive bay.
Other than this my MBP is perfect. The "Genius Bar" might be of help, but I'm skeptical since the buzz is very faint and intermittent. All the noise in the Apple Store will probably make the impossible to hear what I'm describing to them...
Did anyone have any luck or self-fix solutions for this?

  • Hard drive noises on new MBP

    Hi everyone,
I just got my new macbook pro a few days ago and I'm loving it!
But unfortunately, the harddrive seems to be making some odd noises in response to movement.
For example, while my laptop is on my lap and I remove my hands (causing the machine to move upward) and then put my hands back down on the machine again, sometimes I hear a clicking coming out from the (I presume) harddrive.
From the best that I can tell, it seems the noise is coming from the right half by the trackpad, which further fuels my belief that it's the harddrive.
Now, I'm not sure if it's a bad thing or not. It's not a constant noise, but it's in response to movements. My guess is it might just be the sudden motion detector playing it safe, but I'm not sure.
Has anyone else come across this? I just want to make sure it's not a problem I have to worry about.
    Thanks,
    Matt

That is the sudden motion sensor, which parks the hard drive if it detects a potential fall.
That is a good thing, and it means that your computer is working perfectly!

  • Why have they got rid of the ethernet port on the new MBP?

What about 1st time TM backups, 11 hours for 80GB even with the $35.00 adaptor you are foced to buy!  Why doesn't the TM have a Thunderbolt port?

    Axeman,
Thank you for your prompt feedback and correction, yes of course i mean the actual time capsual.  There are many people experiencing big issues with the first backup onto the TC, its recommended by many not to do your first backup via wireless as it often fails, therefore with my old MBP if I had large differences in my last backup and the latest backup I did via ethernet.  Now i have to by an ethernet adaptor for $35.00 and still it takes 10 hours for 80GB initial backup.

  • Is the thunderbolt port on the new MBP 13' the same as a mini displayport?

sorry if this is a silly question..

I think that the Thunderbolt port offers the same function as the Display port.
This a working solution that I have, which uses the Thunderbolt port for both Thunderbolt and Display port use:
Macbook Air (mid 2011) - connect to Seagate GoFlex Desk Thunderbolt Hard Drive (Using Thunderbolt cable)
Seagate Goflex Thunderbolt passthrough (it has 2 thunderbolt ports) to a Dell 24 Inch monitor (using Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter cable).
Both the Seagate GoFlex and the Dell 24 inch monitor work :-)

  • A New MBP Noise?

I know all about the reported noises from MBPs, but I think that I have found something slightly different. When I connect the MBP to analog speakers via the headphone out port, there is a terrible hissing noise coming from the speakers. I tested the same cables and speakers with a new MacMini and had no problems.
Has anyone seen this problem yet?

Very easy way to test it. Plug in your speakers and open Photobooth. If the noise stops, your MBP is plagued by the famous whine. If not there must be some interferences caused by the MBP internal components, or external sources.
Either way, its annoying. I haven't noticed that running my mbp on a kenwood amp. But this and other issues make a mockery of the PRO suffix of the machine.
    Cheers.

  • New MBP mini Display Port out to TV (HDMI) not working

Sorry, I just realized I put this in the Original Folder not the Late 2008 folder.
I bought a new MBP 2.4 GHz, 4 GBs RAM machine in January of this year, 2009. Model Identifier 5,1. I wanted to connect it to my TV's HDMI port. Only interested in getting video to TV since I run sound through a sound system. I have been using my MacBook Air's DVI adapter to a DVi - HDMI cable. I have a Sony Bravia 40 HD tv. Video works just fine from my MBAir, can change resolutions to anything and video works perfectly (audio has a little problem though - high frequency hum out of the MBAir's audio port). That's why I want to change to my MB Pro - audio from the New MBP is good.
With my new MBP, using it's Mini out- DVi connector and using the Same Video (HDMI) cable that I used with my MBAir - it doesn't work. The Display Preference does not detect the TV ever. I just get a black screen on the TV. Not even a flash on the TV like it's trying to connect - nothing.
I can pull the cable out of my MBP 2.4 and swap the DVi connector to the MBAir's cable and put it in the MBAir and it works just fine. Swap it back to the new MBP and nothing.
I have tried two different MBP Mini DVI out connectors, thinking one was bad. I even took the connector I use with the MBAir with me to the Apple Store to have them match the connectors, so I would be assured that I got the correct one. Oh by the way, my MBAir is the original one, not the newest one.
I have read a lot of links on the website where people are having trouble with Monitors using the new MBP Mini DVI video out but could not find any thread that matched my TV problem.
Any suggestions or explanations would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi Jim,
Just to clarify, you state that you have a MacBookPro5,1, which is the late 2008 model. The video output on that model is a mini-DisplayPort, not a mini-DVI (like the pre-unibody MacBooks) or a micro-DVI (like your 1st gen MBA). DisplayPort is a different type of port. (Note - I requested an edit of the title of your post to clarify that).
When you connect the TV, in what sequence are you connecting? The 'proper' sequence is to connect the DVI-HDMI cable to the mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter, have the HDMI end connected to the TV, have the TV set to Line-In, looking for a signal, then connect to the MBP last.
What happens when you connect it like that? Have you tried System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays?

  • Firewire 800 port on new MBP not mounting Lacie rugged 500GB drive

    Hi all
I've just purchased the new MBP 17" and my Lacie Rugged 500GB drive will not mount.
It will mount over USB though.
I've tried three different FW800 cables and no result.
There are some posts around 10.5.7 update issues, but I've tried everything listed and no dice.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I had a Western Digital My Passport Studio model like that. It has nothing to do with cables or your laptop. It has to do with manufacturers who fail to adhere to the proper power standards for the interface. Basically, if the drive demands more power then the port will give, it is never going to work.
I returned my WD to Apple for a refund, and instead tried a SeaGate FreeAgent Go firewire 800 drive. It has worked flawlessly over Firewire on my MacBook Pro, and it even came with both a Fire 800 cable, a firewire 800-to-400 cable, a USB cable, and a special USB power cable so you could draw additional power off the USB ports if a firewire 800 port wasn't putting out sufficient power. That's why I bought it - figured one way or another it had to be able to work on bus power (even if it had taken both the firewire and USB bus in combo to do it).
Another option I've had good luck with in the past is OWC Mercury on the Go drives (eshop.macsales.com). These have always worked fine on bus power for me, but they also have an optional external power supply too, just in case.

  • My headphone port is not working anymore, i have a new ipod touch

I have a new ipod touch, recently my headphone port began to have many problems, first there where funny noices and now it doesnt work at all. I try with new head phones, and as well with 3 different type of speakers and it doesnt work as well.
    I have IOS 8.2

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack or other hardware problem.

  • Audio only coming out one side of headphone port - Retina MBP

I bought a retina MBP a few months ago, and suddenly the headphone port only outputs to the right side. It does it with anything I plug in to it, so it's definitely not the speakers/headphones. It's also not the balance slider in the system preferences > sound menu.
Does this mean it's a hardware problem? I'd hate to have to send it in for repair, but this is driving me crazy.
    Thanks for any help!
edit: I've also already reset the SMC to no avail.

System Preferences > Accessibility > Sound
Make sure that "Play stereo as mono" is not enabled.
Headphone jack fits in snug in the port?
    Tried resetting PRAM?
If these steps do not help, you may have to contact Apple.
    Best.

  • Fan Noise on Brand New MBP

I just got my new MBP (2.53), and I have a fan that sounds like a little lawn mower, right under the keyboard. The loudness rises and falls, but it's not subtle. It's kind of like having a mosquito buzz your ear while your working. Not a lot of fun.
I have a return for repair setup. I have not had it for more than 24 hours, butiIt was built to order with a 250 Gb hard drive, so I can't just swap it out.
I'm only posting to add a data point for others who may be wondering whether there are early-run problems with these. Mine was built on 27 October.
I've had an iBook, PowerBook, and MacBook: none of them had fan noise anything like this.

Mine was the same way. Actually, there are a number of other threads on these forums specifiing the same exact issue.
The Fan under the keyboard "Buzzed" or "Sounded like a little lawnmower" like you say for me too. Apple says they couldn't replace the fan itself because the part was too new, so instead im getting a while new computer. While this is great, it is not a solution for my problems. Now I have no computer at all while I wait for this replacement, and I might run into other issues some people are having such as a flickering screen, or dead pixels.
Oh well I guess. Our price for paying Apples outstanding premium for quality

  • 5.1 speakers with new MBP

    Hi,
I have just bought a new MBP, my first Mac Loving it!
I have a 5.1 Philips speaker system (SPA2602/05) that I used to us with my old laptop, I also bought an external usb sound card to make it compatible. However, the sound card is not compatible with Mac and I can't find similar for Mac.
How can I get it them to work with my MBP? (it has 3 headphone cable thingys....)

The MBP will only output surround sound through an optical (TOSLink) cable (and only when surround sound is provided by the audio source being used). If your speaker system has no TOSLink input port, then you'll have to find a device that does, and that can convert the digital optical output from the MBP into the analog signals your speakers require. Ordinarily, that function would be performed by an AV receiver.

  • New MBP 2.2

My new MBP 15" 2.2 shipped on Friday and FedEx delivered it at 9:00 am today. I ordered the base MBP 2.2 machine but exchanged the stock 120 HD for a 160 HD (5400). Machine arrived trouble and noise free. I ordered the Glossy screen - it really is something to behold. I use Aperture often and found my photos really "pop". One note -- I've read some early reviews about a possible problem with the audio -- noise (cracking and hissing) when using headphones. I use Bang & Olufsen headphones and haven't had a problem yet. Audio works well on this machine. Maybe it's just dumb luck or my hearing really is bad...
