Help! File disappeared!
Hello,
I'm fairly new to Illustrator and I'm hoping someone can help me. I was working on a project yesterday and saved it both in its original ai format and in gif format. You know when you first open Illustrator and it lists recently opened files? My project was there, except it didn't have the little ai logo next to it...I don't know what that means, if anything, and when I tried to open it today, I got an error message that says "file does not exist." In fact, I can't find either file anywhere on my computer--does anyone have any idea what kind of problem this is?
Thankfully, my project is uploaded to a website and I can recover the gif image, but as far as I can tell, it is not editable. Am I correct in assuming this? Is there any way to turn it back to its original ai format, since I did create it in that format originally?

What was the exact name of the file, did it contain any non alphanumeric characters? Semicolon and backslash are especially dangerous to use, the bullet made files invisible when OSX first came out.
Look inside the folder where your file was, the open command or recent files will not work properly, with illegal characters in the name.
Look in your trash can, CMD Del easily gets accidentally hit, bad news is if the file was on the server most of them immediatley delete the file after a warning.

Illustrator Help File disappeared
I've consulted 'Illustrator Help' from the Help menu quite often but it is no longer there (I'm using CS3). Is there another way to access it other than the main menu 'Help,' or how do I get it to return there?
It's back. It seems that after using Illustrator with complex files for some time the undos eat up the memory and perhaps the Illustrator Help file is one thing that is dropped.

My help file disappeared in the middle of a session
closed help window in the middle of an iPhoto session. when I reopened it the window was blank. relaunching iPhoto didn't fix problem. any ideas?
Have you tried a Reset... you will not lose any Data or Settings...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

Created PDF form in Acrobat XI Pro, but HELP fields disappear when I save FCDT file to PDF. Please help. Thanks!
I am not aware of a field type "Help" within a PDF form. I do not see it as a form field that can be added in the form edit mode.
Forms Central forms do not support all the features of Acrobat forms.
Are you talking about the "Tool Tips" or a hidden field that only shows when one enters a field and is hidden upon exiting the field. -

This is sometimes caused by Bad Blocks on the Hard Drive.
If 10.7, hold down Command-R at startup, and choose Disk Utility.
If 10.6 or earlier, boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, answer only the "what language" question and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your Hard drive by Make & Model and check the SMART Status (lower right of the right window). Choose "Repair Disk" . This ONLY examines and repairs the Directory area of the drive, but may improve things a bit. If errors cannot be repaired, you may need a stronger tool, or a new drive. -
Event titles remain, but why did the individual photo titles change into numbers after an upgrade to iPhoto 11?
Why does clicking the iPhoto Help button pop open a new window and promptly invoke the beach ball of death which remains even with iPhoto closed but stops when the App Store app is closed?When you installed iPhoto 11 did you create a new library and import your old library into it? If so that was not the way to upgrade the library. The correct way is to just open your old library with the new iPhoto application and let the application upgrade the library.
If efforts to repair the corrupted library fail you may have to start over with a new library as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.

3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Origianls (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
The Help file issue might be corrected by running BatChmod on the iPhoto application with the settings shown in this screenshot.

Files disappear when creating a new folder
I'm new to mac....got a macbook this week. I'm in Iraq so I have very limited access to anything. No internet for my mac at the moment...so I can't update even if there are ones. I assume I have the currenct version of everything though. The question...
While switching over my files I decided to reorganize them. I'm working on my external HD and creating many new folders for all my files. On numerous occasions now (4) I have created a new file the standard way...right click>new>file...then named it. On these occasions I have done this it has renamed the previous file I had worked in (even though it was not selected) and then the contents of the file disappeared. This leaves me with the new file I created and another identical file of the same name...now with nothing in it. Some of my files I have backed up, but the last one deleted many videos that I didn't. Happens randomly at no particular time. If I select the file and view its contents often it will briefly change its name back to the original name, but still nothing in it. Then next selection of anything will switch it back. Have not been able to fine the files anywhere. Tired of losing my files. Any ideas??? Thanks.Hi Craig and Welcome to Apple Discussions....

Changing the names of items
You can easily change the name of a file, folder, or disk on your computer.
IMPORTANT: To avoid problems using Mac OS X or applications on your computer, don't move or change the names of folders that came with your system (such as the Library folder or your home). You should also not change the names of applications or items associated with specific applications. If you accidentally change the name of an installed item and you experience problems, you can change the name back.
Locate the item you want to rename on your desktop or in a Finder window.
Click the item to select it, then click the name. The name is highlighted and you will be able to edit it.
Type the new name and press Return.
Some document names have a file extension, such as ".txt" or ".jpg." If you change the name of a file and delete the extension, some applications may no longer recognize the file. To ensure the file can be recognized by the application that created it, change only the part of the name that comes before the extension, or open the file using the appropriate application, then save the file with a new name.
You cannot change the name of an item in the Finder window's sidebar. You must locate the item on your desktop or in a Finder window to highlight and change the name.

Getting information about files and folders
You can view and modify information about files, applications, and volumes in the Info window. This information can include:

I realize that's a lot to digest and your time might be limited. This is something that only takes a few minutes and might help immediately.
Go to MacintoshHD/Applications/Utilities and locae Disk Utility. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left and then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Depending on the size of your drive, it should only take a few minutes. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu.
Here's how to find out exactly which Mac OS you are running. Click the Apple logo top left of your screen then click, About This Mac. A pane will open. Just under "Mac OS X" will be the version number. ie., 10.4.x

I tried to rename a file, it gave me an error message (can't remember the number - 43??) and then the file disappeared from the original folder. When I do a search, the file comes up under the new name, but it does not show a path, and even though preview shows the contents, I can't open the document (Powerpoint) and I can't move the document. I tried "Copy" and paste but it doesn't work. I tried "Share" with Airdrop and iChat, but the file is inaccessible. When i try to rename the file, it says the filename is too long.
When I try to open it, it says the alias is not good, and asks if I want to fix the alias. I'm afraid to do that and lose all access to this document.
Right now, it feels like a ghost document - it is on the computer intact, but it is in an undisclosed location and inaccessible.
Please help!!I was able to resolve this by repairing permissions, even though no permissions error was listed specifically for that file.
I could also have recovered it through Time Machine, but I'm interested in knowing how not to have this happen again!
I was afraid of rebooting and possibly losing track even of the ghost.
I did not try EasyFind - I'll keep that in mind next time.

Deleted Files disappeared from external drive but space is still occupied ( iMac )
Hello all...
I have this problem.
Whenever I delete items from my external hard drive, using iMac (running mavericks), the files disappear from the drive window but their space will be still occupied. if i format the drive using my mac, everything will disappear & the whole drive capacity would be available for use.

LukUnless you empty the trash while the external is attached, the files will remain in the trash. You will gain back your space after you empty it.

I use time capsule 1TG and copied some files onto it like using external hard disk. Everything was fine at the beginning, but one day all files disappeared, can't see any files name on tc.
The files are not really gone, they are still on my tc because I used spotlight to search file names and the file showed up again. But after reboot MBP, all files on TC disappear again, but I am sure the data are still there, just can't see file names.
Anyone has clues about this? Many thanks in advance for help!Buggy TC. You just need to restart it.

All of my PDF files disappeared from iBooks on my iPad. Where and why did they suddenly disappear? How can I retrieve them?
As far as I can work out, from incomplete downloads, ticks denote all downloaded ok.
The manually manage option is for those who want to tailor their library collections in Music and Video to specific items. If you have this ticked, then it will sync with the sync selections in your devices pages (eg, Music, videos).
If you want to sync all of your collection 'all' the time, leave manually manage off and put the a tick in the devices' page to sync all items Dependent on iCloud use, and or automatic download options in iTunes, new purchased items are added and synced automatically as they are added - this only applies to Store purchased items.
If you are going to added content outside of the Store, then Manually Manage is the option to take for Music and Videos - it does not affect anything else. IE Apps or podcasts, etc.
If you have manually manage off, and 'selected playlist' option ticked, then it will sync existing ticked items, but new items downloaded will require you tick them (a) after the next iTunes automatic download when it connects to the store and downloads any items, or (b) you download to a device and then sync the device, in which case it transfers the new download to your library - but, as happened to you, deletes it from your idevice.
Retcicking and resyncing will add the item back on next sync.
Don't forget that whenever making any kind of manual change to hit Apply and resync, to stop changes being lost.
However, and i cannot stress this enough, iTunes is very problematic, especially when handling large collections. Its sync operations can be erratic or non-functional at times (even buggy perhaps)
If all options fail, then go to your program installation control folder (Control panel\Programs etc on windows) and select to repair iTunes.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
A few image files disappeared: can't be re-imported from backup
There are at least a 4 dozen pictures imported into LR 5.x last September that now cannot be searched and which are not in the dated folder where they should be - even if searched in Windows Explorer. It's part of an event, and it appears to be all those on one card from one body. I remember seeing these images in the Library module at the time. No Previews with question marks.
If I go to the duplicated import created that day I find the "missing" images in the folder created at that time. Yea Adobe for creating the easy back-up for importing. In this backup folder the images can be searched and opened in either Windows Explorer or a viewer like FastStone. . If I put the files into the date-organized database folder (to "Synchronize" in the main directory) LR says it cannot import them as they are already part of the database. I tried copying these files in Explorer to a different hard drive and tried importing again: no help.
How can I convince LR that these need to be re-imported? More importantly, can anyone offer a scenario by which these image files disappeared from the disk and didn't leave a preview with a question mark? I didn't actually do any work (Dev module) that I remember on these. I certainly can go through with Bridge and batch rename this little set and present them again as an import request. But what causes something to drop out of the DB and disappear as a file? Obviously some kind of operator error is the most likely, I understand.
Deleting all Previews? Seems like that would make the machine work for hours to redo Previews for 90,000 pix.Thanks for the suggestions (and warnings). I am pretty experienced with Lightroom and know the structure behind it. What was weird here was that when I try to bring one of the images back in through Synch or Import, says "It's already part of the database" BUT when searching for the image by file name LR finds others that share the same file number (not strange) but NOT the image I want (strange). This search was performed at the root of the file/folder structure, so should be looking into every folder in the database. An Explorer search shows that the image is no longer in the database folders. It is only found in the "Backup" folders created by LR when ingesting the card at the original import.
OK, so use the OS to move some of the files (12) back "inside" the folder, click Synch folder and it tells me there are 12 new photos. So far so good. BUT -- although they are now "there" in the folder and re-imported they still do not show up in the Library thumbnail view and can't be searched in Lightroom (by file name). The 12 didn't show up on a import screen with one lone PS image in that batch that was newly created this afternoon and DID show as a new import. I expected to see the 12 on that screen.
To answer one question offered today: No, the images do not show in the Develop module.
So something tells Lightroom these are not new and that they are aready there. However, not searchable.
Next step changing the names of the offending file, like appending a letter. See if that makes them look "new".
I think I can fix this as long as I have to original CR2 files unprocessed, which thankfully, I do. Anyone have a theory about what causes this? Never had it happen. -
Desktop files disappeared (advanced user)

Main Problem:
While working (though not specifically while I was watching, ie: I was cycling through firefox, acrobat reader, outlook 2010, and microsoft word 2010 without viewing the desktop very often) all of the documents on my desktop disappeared.
Meaning, they were all there (some have been there for months) this morning when I came to work and turned my computer on, and while working (without rebooting or doing anything abnormal) the files disappeared. None of the folders have disappeared nor have
their positions on the desktop changed. The only thing out of the normal routine that I did today was update Adobe Acrobat Reader 9. I don't use X because it conflicts with my printer, though lately it's been acting up anyway so I thought it might be 9 and
did the check for updates(I've had check for updates turned off until now). It updated from something like 9.2.5 to 9.5.1. Other than that it's been a usual day of typing in Word, opening PDFs and printing them out, with a little Outlook 2010, Mozilla Firefox,
and some wordpad.
Some specs:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (no pending windows updates)
ESET Smart Security, active, up to date, and running the entire time. (Full scan returned no problems)
8gigs ram, C drive 500GB, D drive 80GB, E drive 1TB
and other various goodies I'll be glad to divulge if anyone wants to know.
Things that are -not- wrong:
I've been using computers for over 20 years, I built this one from parts as I do with all my computers, yada yada, I'm the "computer guy" at my company I run the network, I setup all the boxes, and take care of all the repairs and problems. Then again I am
not certified or licensed in anything, there is plenty about Windows, and especially Windows 7 that I do not understand. Also, and this is quite unfortunate, I live and work in Japan so my OS is in Japanese. I am fluent to an extent but I cannot navigate some
of the control panel areas without a little trial and error because the chinese characters get a little tricky when you get into too specific of a subject; BUT, I love and have been using ACDSee Classic forever, with it's "show hidden" and "show system" files
options, I have free reign over hidden files and programs from the rest of the people that use this computer who do not know what ACDSee is (safer for them).
Nothing shows up in ACDSee or explorer with show hidden files active in my desktop folder or any other user's desktop (there's only one user but windows makes those "all users" folders anyway) or on the desktop itself. All the folders remain untouched.
Files that were positioned between two folders are missing, meaning I didn't accidentally click and drag the whole desktop into my recycle bin and some how clean the bin without noticing.
Only one file shows up in quick recovery scans of the recycle bin or the desktop, and I'm currently in the process of a deep scan of the entire C drive. (though I didn't delete the files, so why should they?)
Solution?
The only thing I can imagine is that somehow some sector of the desktop got "archived" or sectioned off in some manner. If I can assume the folders within the desktop folder have their own paths (their own separate sectors on the disk, albeit within the desktop
sector) and that the files within the desktop folder all share a common sector (the desktop folder) perhaps that sector got somehow funked with? For example the shortcut to "My Computer" even went missing. All I had left was a recycle bin and 9-10 folders
scattered across the desktop. So is there some way I can look into recovering that specific sector? Some sort of indexing/archiving that might cause this?
I don't have recovery points, nor that recent of backups to recover files such as last nights work or last weeks work, but more important than getting my data back is, [u]What Happened[/u]!? So it doesn't happen again.
It seems there are actually a fair share of people (on this site and MANY others) that have or have had this problem and now fear their desktop as an evil devourer of mid-term papers. In my case as well, weeks of work, in a business environment, definitely
NOT acceptable.
Help!
If anyone has any insight or ideas of what could be causing this that would be great. We need an open discussion on this. Again it does not have to do with Human error (me), nor does it seem to be a virus (the hidden files deal); I have plenty experience with
computers and after scouring the task manager and the hard disk with various tools I cannot find tens of files all from one single location, that were all there just hours ago!.............??? Trying a search or turning desktop icons on something simple like
that has already been done XD no offense, but this is not that simple.

A. The desktop theme and start menu etc. remain unchanged. Would that stand as proof the profile was not reset?
B. I was directed towards recuva on a different forum as well and gave it a shot. The deep scan (of the desktop and all sub folders) did recover about 4 of my files, but they are older over written versions of the files; some of the more recently created
files don't even show up on the list... I can see stuff that was deleted last year, but not some of my missing files? That what leads me to think it's something to do with file restructuring, or maybe as you're suggesting a profile management problem. The
files just plain aren't considered to be related to the desktop folder anymore.
C. That makes sense. The desktop folder is handled differently than say a root folder on the D:\ drive... I don't save stuff on the desktop at home either... it's just something everyone seems to do for convenience at my office, though I've never seen this
problem before.
D. I sometimes have that too and usually am dealing with PDFs received via outlook 2010, thus am opening them directly with adobe's reader.

H. Ya the administrative warnings in Windows 7 are quite a pain in my opinion... being told I don't have privilege on my own computer is a little silly... no doubt my fault for not spending the time to reassure my system that it's my fault though. I'm interested
in opening system rights both personally and for work, I will look into that when I find the time.
I also ran scan disk after a reboot (before I went home two hours later than normal the day before yesterday) but it only lasted like 3 seconds and said all is well?? Which I've never seen before, but maybe I forgot to check the "check for bad sectors" box.
So I plan to try and run that again today in as deep a format as possible.... I still assume that is somehow the problem... for the files to not even show up from a program like recuva, it feels like the sector was written off as corrupt somehow or...??

Copied folder with XLS, DOC, PPT and PDF files to a shared server. Upgraded workstation to Win7. Copied folder to new Win7 workstation. All the Office files are there, but none of the PDF files. Help! Tried to ReIndex, no change. Why would just the PDF files disappear?
yes, but hopefully you deactivated your previously installed adobe programs.
if so, you can install your upgrade programs using your original serial numbers and activate your programs.
if you cannot activate your new installs (becaues you failed to deactivate your previously installed programs), you'll need to contact support.

TOC in Microsoft help file missing expand buttons

I am having an issue with a generated microsoft help file which is causing the expand buttons on the TOC to disappear. The help file works as expected apart from this irritation. Here is a screen shot of the dodgy TOC:

Hi, I could install Itunes and Quicktime, I already tried the msconfig solutions but it doesn't work. I have a ipod with video and I can't get it to work because itunes won't open. It displays the license agreement and after I agree it displays error
