Help files never work

Does anyone know why my "help" files never seem to work? for instance in Mail I click on help to look for an answer and I get the same message every time.
Here it is:

Make sure you’re connected to the Internet. For help connecting, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Network, and click “Assist me.”
If you’re connected to the Internet, and the content still doesn’t appear, try again later.
I've went into Preferences made sure my firewall is set correctly, tinkered around in there but cannot find a fix anywhere. This is getting frustrating.
Can anyone please help??

What exactly do you want help in? Help is Application specific. So Mail has to be the Application on the top, i.e., you should see Mail next to the Apple logo on the top left of your screen. If you then click on Help, you'll get Help related to Mail. At least thats how it is supposed to work ... unless you have a problem.

  • My compiled help files was working and now is broken in LabVIEW 2009

    I've created a .chm file for distributing an add-on VI Library. In order to get my product certified as "LabVIEW compatible", a help file with pretty good documentation is required. Using the Microsoft Help Workshop, I have created a .chm file that works in LabVIEW 8.5 and 8.6. Once I distribute to LabVIEW 2009, the javascript portions of the help file fail. These functions are:
    1) Place on Block diagram
    2) Find on Functions Palette
    3) Open Example
    I have determined that this is due to a variable written in NI glang.chm file. The file internal to the chm file is called "lvversion.js" and contains a variable named "lvversion". The marketing decision to name the product "LabVIEW 2009" has contributed to this problem since this variable is equal to "9.0.0", yet the path is (typically) C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2009\help
     I originally decompiled NIs glang.chm file to analyze the javascript functions that are required for the above 3 buttons to work.I found that NI hardcodes the URL of the help services in a file called "helpserver.js" to be something like "http://127.0.0.1:3580/National%20Instruments/LabVIEW/LabVIEW {major-version}" where major version is "8.5" rather than "8.5.1"
    A call to the function "openProj" would then look something like:
     http://127.0.0.1:3580/National%20Instruments/LabVIEW/LabVIEW 8.5/OpenVIFromHelp?PROJ=myProject.lvproj
    NI hardcodes these URL in glang.chm::/helpserver.js, and I would gladly read them directly if Javascript were less crippled. Since that hasn't worked yet, I did a regular expression in javascript to determine the version based on the path of the document. This worked until LabVIEW 2009 where the path is (typically):
     C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2009
    but the version in glang.chm::/lvversion is "9.0.0"
    Yes, I can workaround that by doing some javascript that says:
    if(version == 2009)
                version = "9.0"
            else
                version = version
     However, when 9.0.1 comes out, will it be LabVIEW 2009 still, or LabVIEW 2010? I'd like my javascript code to decoupled from any particular version so I don't have to relase a new version of my toolkit for each LabVIEW major or minor release.

    OK I finally worked around this. Here is some javascript code that will look for a file called "lvversion.js" inside the <LabVIEW Directory>\help\glang.chm file. save this as a javascript file named "myjavascript.js"

    Then refer to it in an html document that will be compiled into a .chm file along with the javascript.

    Now when you call functions from NI's glang.chm::/helpserver.js file, you won't need to prepend and URL or path information to the function to determine which version of LabVIEW you are in. I tested this on 8.5, 8.6, and 2009 and it now pulls up all my examples properly in all of those versions. The following demnostrates a call to "openProj" which opens a project containing all of my examples from a javascript button in the detailed help .html file that gets compiled into the .chm file:

  • .dist files never work

    I have downloaded many updates using Software update which give me folder containing several packages plus a file like PAU200901-1.0.dist
    This .dist file opens the Installer, but it always gets to an alert which says:
    The Installer could not locate the data it needed to install the software. Check your install media or internet connection and try again or contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
    1- The data IS there, in the folder created by the download. I have changed nothing.
    2 - There is no install media, just the downloaded folder.
    3 - My internet connection is perfect - I just downloaded the files.
    4 - The software manufacturer is Apple. I'll file a report to them directly as well as posting here.
    Can anyone help here? I have never been able to get one of these .dist installers to work. I usually resort to Pacifist and install all the sub-packages one by one.
    I'd like to know what the problem is though.....

    Automatically updating should work without any special effort or difficulties. If you wish to have updates backed up, you can download them from apple.com as DMG files. I did this on my first mini, then got lax with it until my user group needed some help with a 'sneakernet' to help folks without broadband or even no internet access at all. The update packages can take up a LOT of space, so an external drive - probably the same you use for Time Machine - would be a good idea.

    Yes, I have exactly the same problem with iTunes 10 in that it doesn't show anything. Specifically,
    when you ask for help running iTunes (Help menu->"iTunes Help"), the Mac OS X help window shows up but it is completely empty. If I choose other help (e.g. Safari or Number or whatever) from the little button with the house on it, they work fine. But iTunes gives empty. I do not get the internet connection error like you do however.
    I think this is a bug and needs fixing: I want to get some help!

  • Exporting as an XML file never works CS6

    I am trying to export the timeline as an XML file in order to color correct in a different program. Every time I export it gets stuck with a status bar and stays there until I have to force quit Premiere (attached is an image of where I get stuck). I am using Yosemite with adobe CS6. How can I get this export to work!?

    Im trying to get the help file to work in SAP.
    i Have looked at where SAP is fetching the file and i have placed it there.
    But when i go into SAP and press F1 i get an error message ...
    "Navigation to the webpage was canceled
       What you can try:
         Retype the address. "

    Could you please try the following steps :-
    o Change the Help Settings from 'Shared Folder' to 'Local
    Installation' under Help => Help Settings.
    o Business One will then look for the Help folder on the local B1
    Client and not on the B1 Server.
    o This will only work if the B1 Client has the Help folder locally
    installed.
    o If not this could be manually copied from SBO_SHR directory to
    the client.
    o Alternatively all the B1 Clients will need to be reinstalled.

  • Help with "Help File"

    Hi all,
    I have an almost-complete application to which I'm adding a help file. I am using the a VI called "Online Help file" or some thing to that effect (I would check but this internet station isn't my work station so I don't have access here...). I have created an HTML based help file using "Windows HTML workshop." This file opens correctly on any XP or 2000 system I open it with. However, I created a VI to open the help file when the "Help" tag on the menu bar is activated and this seems to work on my LabView developement system, but not on other systems (after having installed the application). No errors are posted, the help file simply doesn't open. I'm beggining to think that I may be missing some additional installers that I didn't realize were necessary for this application. I currently install LV8.2RTE and the VISA Run-time 4.0. These are the only installers I have been including. Do I need other installers for the help file to work correctly (keeping in mind that this VI works flawlessly in the application on the developement system, but not on other PCs)? If not could someone shed some light on my problem? Thanks a bunch!

    Ok ok... only 4 stars for that effort... let's see if we can do better  
    First, I see the same behavior upon closing the application I originally attached - the chm also closes
    Apparently what's happening is that when we use the online help control VI, the chm file is opening in the calling application's context, in this case the LabVIEW app/runtime engine instance.
    We can get around this by making a call which will open the chm file explicity in Windows - we can do this from LabVIEW with the command exec VI.
    I have attached the code this time as well - everything is zipped up (lvproj, vi, & exe).  You'll notice I have used a diagram disable structure so you can see both implementations - the previous one is disabled of course.
    I hope THIS is what you were looking for

    PS - if you want your LabVIEW application to close by itself after it completes execution, you can use the Exit LabVIEW function at the end of the VI and rebuild the exe.

  • Local Help Files Needed

    Is there a way to access help files locally?  Everytime I need to access the help files I get connected to thie internet and I have to wade through the site to find what I'm looking for.
    Sometimes I need to access help files whilst working where there is no internet connection
    There must be a way of installing the help files on my mac. I'm sure you load of geniuses have the answer.......

  • RoboHelp for Word: The Help file opens a blank page

    The Help files were working fine all these days. Today when i
    click on the help on the webpage, it shows a blank page. I am using
    RoboHelp for Word X5. I do not get any error message on the screen.
    I can just see the progress bar just blinking and also our website
    link which says transferring. None of my help files on the live
    applications are working

    That link works for me in IE and FF so I think we can rule
    out your output.
    If the problem is the call, anyone who accesses it via the
    link you gave me should be OK and only see the problem when the
    help is called via the application.
    If the problem is the help, anyone will see it, no matter how
    they access the help.
    I think both can be ruled out as they do not fit what you
    describe. I would therefore be inclined to forget the RH8 idea.

    I can't help with the scan/print problem. You seem to have done everything I would try.
    I don't know if maybe using a registry cleaner would help.
