Help for reading a numeric file

Hi to all of you,
I am new to programming .
I have to read a numerical matrix stored in a file . The matrix is made of integer numbers and its dimension is 100*4.
I would like to know which is the best metod to read integers from a file and which set of instructions to use.
I'm reading the book "introduction to java programming by prof Eck" and he uses TextIO class but I cannot read anything.
Thank you very much for you help, meaning a book to read , a chapter to download from internet and why not a hint of code.
Best wishes
Arturo

Hi Shailendra_Singh_Parmar,
as you can see from my enclosed application
import java.io.File ;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class ReadMatricksFile {
*@param args*
     public static void main(String[] args)throws Exception {
          Scanner scan = new Scanner(new File("/home/arturo/workspace/ReadMatricksFile/bin/Estra.txt"));
          int i;
          int j;
        int a[][]=new int[5][4];
          // carico il file nella matrice
          while (scan.hasNextInt()) {
               for (i=1;i<=4;i++) {
                    for (j=1;j<=3;j++) {
                   a[i][j]=(scan.nextInt());
                    System.out.println();
          // Mi stampo la matrice a video per controllare che tutto &egrave; andato bene
          for (i=1;i<=4;i++) {
               for (j=1;j<=3;j++) {
             System.out.print(a[i][j]);
             System.out.print(" ");
               System.out.println();
}this is my first little, very very litle, program in Java that will let me read my big stored matrix.
Thank you for your invaluable help. Best wishes.
To Encephalopatic...
thank you very much . From your teaching I've understood that my life (with Java) will be easier if I use standard Java. So, I will always try to search equivalent standard code to the one proposed by prof Eck.
Enjoy your life to all of you .

  • Disable Save or Save As for Read Only mpp file

    Hi,
    I have a read only mpp file and need to make sure that it cannot be Saved / Saved As by anybody in Team. They should only have access to view the file.
    How can enable a file which does not allow save / save as?

    ihvarrived,
    You didn't mention anything about being in a Project Server environment, so I assume Shiva's response has no meaning for you.
    With regard to an approach to prevent unauthorized users from saving a file let me again stress that, in my opinion, the best approach for this issue is training. That has the great advantage of mutual respect and cooperative effort in a team environment.
    To implement a more covert approach you will need to do the following:
    1. With the file open go to Developer/Code group/Visual Basic
    2. Hit the Project Explorer icon
    3. In the Explorer hierarchy, under the VBAProject double click on the "ThisProject"
    4. In the code window, paste the following code:
    Private Sub project_open(ByVal pj As MSProject.Project)
    MsgBox "This file is write protected. You can make changes" & vbCr & _
        "for temporary what-if scenarios, but you will not be" & vbCr & _
        "able to save without the correct password", vbExclamation, "Warning!"
    End Sub
    Private Sub project_beforesave(ByVal pj As MSProject.Project)
    pass = InputBox("enter save password")
    If pass <> "xyz" Then  'string in quotes is the password you chose for saving, "xyz" is for illustration only
        SelectAll
        EditDelete
    End If
    End Sub
    5. While still in the code window, go to Tools/VBA Project Properties/Protection tab
    6. Check the "Lock this project" option
    7. Enter and confirm a password. It can be the same as your save password or a different password (This will insure that only you can view and modify the above code)
    8. Hit OK, then File/Save [your filename] to capture your macro in the file. Note, at this point you will be required to enter your save password.
    Be advised that if a user does attempt to save without the correct save password, the file will be zeroed out and saved (i.e. nothing). That means that whenever you save the file you should also save a backup under a different name, so you can restore the
    file if necessary. I couldn't figure out a good way to work around this problem. If the user always tries a "Save As" this wouldn't be an issue, but if they chose "Save" and you don't have a backup, you're screwed.
    If this answers your question or is at least helpful, please mark it accordingly.

  • Java mapping - for reading the binary file contents and changing filename

    Hi,
    I have already gone through the various bolgs and threads and have not been able to find a solution to my problem.
    One blog did give some idea but did not help- "JAAPPING", an alternate way of reading a CSV file
    I am not very good in java but have been trying some out recently to fulfill the interface requirements.
    I would really appreciate if you could help am I am giving below the detailed scenario below.
    Part 1- working fine - The incoming file looks like:
    :20:STMEMU096868DUBE
    :25:001180256210
    :28C:00371/00001
    :60F:C090617AED742136,92
    :61:0906300630CD34,27FINTCREDIT INTEREST
    26MAY2009 TO 25JUN2009
    :62F:C090630AED742171,19
    :64:C090630AED742171,19
    The file name as received is:TCDE.BLQSAM.SAEA2682.C0084025.A9G24T58.20090724195908
    This file without any conversion is placed on XI server dircetory folder.
    Part 2 - need to develop
    The file should now be renamed according to the incoming value in 2nd line - specifically the 12 digit value 001180256210 and placed on the R/3 dircetory folder.
    The new file name in the above example should be:
    AC_NO_001180256210_datetime
    The module for the above was created and the last time I checked it was working.
    However, when I wanted to do final testing in Dev and move the changes further, the module has seemed to have stopped working so I need an alternate solution fast.
    I was thinking of doing the Java mapping as I will be more in control as to what is going on thereby reducing the dependency.
    There is no need to create any target xml structure as the file as it is needs to be placed in the target folder with a new name.
    I can get the file name in UDF which I have already created but i am not usre if it working.
    Can you please help?
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Stephen
    The xml must be getting added in the below part of the code. It is coming from arg[0]
    You can put a check and get it removed.
    while ((len = arg0.read(buffer)) != -1) {
      arg1.write(buffer, 0, len);

  • Need help with reading XML using File Adapter

    I have created a simple BPEL process that uses a file adapter to read files containing XML messages of a simple xsd schema. But when reading the xml, I get the following error message:

    Thanks for your response.
    I am not sure if there is any easier way, but I tried out the following tool available on the net to check an xml against a xsd:
    http://tools.decisionsoft.com/schemaValidate/
    There were a few issues, that I corrected and finally had a xsd and xml that were matching and valid. I tried this out in my file reading BPEL process, but the error still remained the same!
    Here is my updated/simplified xsd and xml:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    <xs:schema targetNamespace="http://xmlns.oracle.com/xmlfile"
    xmlns:tns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/xmlfile"
    xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
    xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/xmlfile">
    <xs:element name="revision-report">

    <xs:sequence>
    <xs:element maxOccurs="unbounded" ref="alternategroup"/>
    </xs:sequence>
    <xs:attribute name="doc" use="required" type="xs:string"/>
    <xs:attribute name="model" use="required" type="xs:string"/>
    <xs:attribute name="pubdate" use="required" type="xs:string"/>
    </xs:complexType>
    </xs:element>
    <xs:element name="alternategroup">
    <xs:complexType>
    <xs:attribute name="Name" use="required" type="xs:string"/>
    <xs:attribute name="Desc" use="required" type="xs:string"/>
    </xs:complexType>
    </xs:element>
    </xs:schema>
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    <revision-report doc="doc2" model="model4" pubdate="pubdate5" xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/xmlfile">
    <alternategroup Name="ABC" Desc="ABC-Desc"/>
    <alternategroup Name="DEF" Desc="DEF-Desc"/>
    <alternategroup Name="GHI" Desc="GHI-Desc"/>
    </revision-report>
    I even tried the option that is available in JDeveloper to generate a sample xml from a xsd (when in the context of a Transformation activity). The xml generated by this also seems exactly like the one above.
    So, I am not able to figure out why my BPEL process errors out with the message Invalid xml document.

  • I need help on reading a large file, thanks.

    I try to read a txt file into an array, just like what I ususally do. But this time the file is too big (300k rows, 100 columns seperated by single space), I got the message "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError".
    I need to do some calculation for every possible row pair. Can someone help me out of this? Thanks a lot.

    Try changing your approach - don't read it into an array, process it one line at a time. Obviously any approach where you have the whole file in memory is going to exceed memory at some size of the file.

  • Quickest method for reading and writing files

    Hi
    I need help regarding file operations.(Reading and Writing). Currently I am using BufferedReader and BufferedWriter to read and write files. But the files (XML) are very huge files(from 30 -50 mb). This is slowing the application to a great extent. Is there any other approach to perform the above mentioned operations on XML files in a fast manner.
    Thank You

    Can u let me know how to use the java.nio pavkage for primitve data types(int,float..., boolean). I have tried it but found no success.

  • Set a timeout for "read from text file"

    I Need to read from a text file on a remote pc and use the read from text file function to do this. It wotks but sometimes this pc is down causing long wait times in my vi.
    Is there a way to set a timeout for the read from text file function, or is there an other solution?
    Thank you

    You could check that the path is valid first before you attempt to read the file.  hen put the file read in a True-False case structure based on the results of the check.  You can use the function "Check if File or Folder Exists"  It checks whether a file or folder exists on disk at a specified path. This VI works with standard files and folders as well as files in LLB files.   The function is found in the File I/O --> Advanced File Functions palette.

  • What's the best way for reading this binary file?

    I've written a program that acquires data from a DAQmx card and writes it on a binary file (attached file and picture). The data that I'm acquiring comes from 8 channels, at 2.5MS/s for, at least, 5 seconds. What's the best way of reading this binary file, knowing that:
    -I'll need it also on graphics (only after acquiring)
    -I also need to see these values and use them later in Matlab.
    I've tried the "Array to Spreadsheet String", but LabView goes out of memory (even if I don't use all of the 8 channels, but only 1).
    LabView 8.6
    Solved!

    But my real problem, at least now, is how can I divide the information to get not only one graphic but eight?
    I can read the file, but I get this (with only two channels):
    So what I tried was, using a for loop, saving 250 elements in different arrays and then writing it to the .txt file. But it doesn't come right... I used 250 because that's what I got from the graphic: at each 250 points it plots the other channel.
    Am I missing something here? How should I treat the information coming from the binary file, if not the way I'm doing?
    (attached are the .vi files I'm using to save in the .txt format)
    (EDITED. I just saw that I was dividing my graph's data in 4 just before plotting it... so It isn't 250 but 1000 elements for each channel... Still, the problem has not been solved)

  • What file type should i use for reading a large file of data?

    I want to store data in a file and access them later. The data file could reach 500 to 1000 MBytes, as a binary file.
    I may have memory problems.
    I do not need the whole data in memory, only a few data each time, for my calculations.
    If i use a binary file, i can not read only a few data. I have to load the whole file and then read the data i need.
    Is this correct?
    If i use another type of file, can i read only a few bytes without loading the whole file?
    Maybe a TDMS file?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I would probably use a TDMS file for this since it could also be read into excel if it were small enough - just more flexiblility. But you can also do it using binary types. You don't have to read the entire file when using binary files. See below.

  • Help! Reading a text file in a JAR

    How do I read a text file in a jar? (NON-applet).
    Following doesn't work:
    File f = new File("res\\dictionaryuk.txt");
    Neither does this:
    InputStream in = this.getClass().getResourceAsStream("res\\dictionary.txt");
    (I read somewhere else here that one should use resources instead of files in a JAR, but I'm not certain about that, or why?)
    It's not the pathname because I've tried everything.
    "res\\dictionaryuk.txt"
    "res/dictionaryuk.txt"
    "\\res\\dictionaryuk.txt"
    "\\dictionaryuk.txt"
    "dictionaryuk.txt"
    ...you name it
    And yes, the text file IS in the JAR.
    Any suggestions? Sample code?

    Okay, here is a quick example of how to do it that I tested and works...
    I get the same values for the ZipEntry method and the InputStream.available method, but the available method is used for slightly different purposes, and may not always return the full size of the file (I have seen some instances where the value returned was always 0). Anyway, here it goes:
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.util.jar.JarFile;
    import java.util.zip.ZipEntry;

              InputStream is = JARFileReading.class.getResourceAsStream(fileName);
              try
                   System.out.println("Input Stream.avaliable: "+is.available());
                   if (is != null)
                        is.close();
              } catch (IOException e)
                   e.printStackTrace();
              File jarFile = new File("JarFile.jar");
              if (!jarFile.exists()) System.exit(0);
              JarFile theJar = null;
              try
                   theJar = new JarFile(jarFile);
                   ZipEntry theFile = theJar.getEntry(fileName);
                   System.out.println("Zip Entry.getSize: "+theFile.getSize());
                   System.out.println("Zip Entry.getCompressedSize: "+theFile.getCompressedSize());
                   is = theJar.getInputStream(theFile);
                   System.out.println("JarFile.getInputStream.available: "+is.available());
                   if (theJar != null)
                        theJar.close();
                   if (is != null)
                        is.close();
              } catch (IOException e1)
                   e1.printStackTrace();

    A touchstone file is really just a tab delimited text file with some header info.
    Actually I've seen different flavors depending on the originator of the file. The Touchstone File Specification data line formatting rule just says that individual entries are separated by whitespace. HP-ADS separates the values with multiple space characters, the N5230A and C uses a single space character, the E5071C uses a single tab character. I usually replace multiple spaces or tabs with a single tab before processing the data.

    That's the truth.  I don't know why I said "tab" because I've seen different formats, too.  The point I wanted to make was that ultimeately it's just a parsable text file.

    public class InventoryItem
         private String name;

         public InventoryItem (String nameOfItem, int numOfUnits, float priceOfItem)
              name = nameOfItem;
              units = numOfUnits;
              price = priceOfItem;

    Use CODE tags
    What's not printing?
                        try
    units =
    its = Integer.parseInt(tokenizer.nextToken());
    price =
    ice = Float.parseFloat(tokenizer.nextToken());
    items[count++] = new InventoryItem(name, units,
    nits, price);
                        catch (NumberFormatException exception)
    System.out.println("error in input.Line <========= THIS ???????
    .Line ignored:");
                             System.out.println(line); <============= AND THIS???
                        line = inFile.readLine();
                   inFile.close();
                   for (int i = 0; i<count; i++)
                        System.out.println (items); <========== THIS IS OK, right?
    If I have correctly indentified your problem, then the reason it's not printing is that your print statements are within a catch block, and evidently your code is not throwing any NumberFormatExceptions

  • Custom tag or help in reading an image file into the HTTP stream

    Since under WL we do not deploy our app physically there is no physical
              directory to write our dynamic images to (via kavachart).
              I can call their bean with:
              response.setContentType("image/png");
              ServletOutputStream output = response.getOutputStream();
              but that only allows the image back not the housing page. I can use an
              iframe but there are other issues and was wondering if anyone has idea on a
              custom tag the can easily read a physical directory outside of WL's space
              and include an image file in the http stream. Our app server and webservers
              are in separate zones so I can not just write to some virtual directory on
              the webserver and then serve it up w/ a simple <img> tag.
              BTW Kavachart has some tags referred to in their thin doc but I did not have
              good luck w/ their suggestions.
              Thanks in advance.

    Hi joe.com,
    Thanks for the response. It's greatly appreciated. Actually, I'm trying to run this on an Nokia SDK (s80 emulator) and eventually a windows mobile emulator.
    I was wondering if the JSR is the problem. I'm currently using jsr 62 and I'm thinking of trying to 216 to get PP 1.1. I'm wondering if 62 maybe limiting file io?
    any help is appreciated.
