Help in profiling a complex application needed

Hi,
I have a rather complex, general, problem here I would like to solve using
dtrace so any hint, advise, similar experience etc would be more than
welcome.
Basically, my company has created a complex database system for acquisition
and management of reference stock market data and the process has several
phases (this is my understanding of it): acquire the data from
e.g. Bloomberg in their native format, transforms it in some universal
format and then use that format to load it into a database where it can be
analysed, processed etc using more or less (in house developed) standard
SQL with calendar extensions (e.g every Friday, last Monday in month etc
etc). There are several processes (servers) involved: data server,
scheduler, database server etc etc.
Now, when we have installed the product at one of our customers (running
E6500 with 24CPUs and 20GB of RAM, all that on Solaris 8 --I think), our
product was given a two hours window every day to do a certain amount of
work and to process several GBs of data (don't have the figures) and
everything was fine, since we were able to finish that in 90 minutes. But
now, as the amount of data within database grows (although still within
preallocated 80 or 100GB size -- split into 2GB files to work around (ex)
large file problem), for the same amount of work the product in question
needs something like 180 minutes -- which is 1 hour too much.
My task is to try to find out where the bottleneck is and to give some
suggestions for speeding things up. The customer claims that the
application is I/O bound and prstat -m more or less confirms that (almost
no CPU latency, large amount of voluntary context switches etc etc).
How do I confirm this using dtrace? I can't run dtrace on their production
system since it's Solaris 8 but I have set up a Solaris 10 (s10_60)
machine that has all the components installed and will try to run similar
kind of work there.
Where do I start? What shall I look for? The problem is also that there is
a lot of programs involved, a lot of IPC (shared memory, semaphores, pipes,
sockets) and in general when the system is busy, it is quite busy.
I guess in ideal world, we would call Sun and ask them to figure the
problem themselves, but it is not an ideal world and the golden age of .com
is gone :-(
Thanks and bye, Dragan

quite busy.Well, this is definitely the hard part. DTrace makes it much easier to ask questions of the system, but you're asking "what questions do I ask?" There are lots of valid ways to go about this, but I often start by by looking at how the physical resources on the system are being used: CPU, I/O, networking and so on. For starters, squeeze all of the idle out of the system: as long as there is idle in the system, you're obviously not going as fast as you could. You want to start asking questions like "why am I doing I/O?" or "why am I coming off CPU?" If you could post some mpstat/vmstat/iostat data, perhaps we could provide some more concrete directions...

  • HELP! Threads for Signing Applications Needed!

BACKGROUND: Several years ago I copied and modified an application titled MCL. It is a validation set of routines that is used by all my projects, so I created MCL.dll and include it the References of all projects that use it. Since I was new to Visual Basic/Studio2008
I was just happy to debug it and store it as the only project in MCL as a .dll. MCL is an Application type: ClassLibrary.
PROBLEM: I'm trying to update another project, CPS, that uses MCL.dll, and I can't because I get the message: "Error Unable to emit assembly: Referenced assembly 'MCL' does not have a strong name CPS".  When I open MCL to try change
the signing, the Signing* tab is 'greyed out'. The only thing I can do is click the box: 'Sign the assembly'.
Recently I began signing projects by selecting and storing the Certificates in the root directory, and therein began most of my problems. Everything I do with Visual Studio is use it for SQL projects that will only run on my PC or any future PC
    upgrades for me.
I've read a "ton" of 'signing' documentation, but am more confused than ever. Are there some recommended threads that give me an overview of the process and steps I need to take to fix my problem with signing MCL and signing other applications
successfully, so I can update and use them?
Any help would be most appreciated!

    Hi,
"Error Unable to emit assembly: Referenced assembly 'MCL' does not have a strong name CPS".
    As far as I know,
Strong-named assemblies can only reference other strong-named assemblies. If the main project is strong-named, all the referenced assemblies should be
strong name. So this error means that the referenced assembly should be signed with strong name ‘CPS’.

  • Need help understanding profiles and color management

I made the big leap from inexpensive inkjets to:
    1 Epson 3800 Standard
    2 Spyder3Studio
I have a Mac Pro Quad, Aperture, PS3, etc.
I have a steep learning curve ahead, here's what I've done:
1 Read a lot of books, watched tutorials, etc.
    2 Calibrated the monitor
3 Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
    What I've found:
1 The sample print produced by Spyder3Print, using the profile I created with color management turned off in the print dialog, looks very good.
2 When I get into Aperture, and apply the .icc profile I created in the proofing profile with onscreen proofing, the onscreen image does not change appreciably compared with the no proof setting. It gets slightly darker
3 When I select File>Print image, select the profile I created, turn off color management and look a the resulting preview image it looks much lighter and washed out than the onscreen image with onscreen proofing turned on.
4 When I print the image, it looks the same as was shown in the print preview...light and washed out, which is much different than what is shown in edit mode.
5 When I open PS3 with onscreen soft-proofing, the onscreen image is light and washed out...just like displayed in PS3 preview. If I re-edit the image to look OK onscreen, and print with the profile and color management turned off, the printed image looks OK.
    So, why am I confused?
1 In the back of my simplistic and naive mind, I anticipated that in creating a custom printer profile I would only need to edit a photo once, so it looks good on the calibrated screen, and then a custom printer profile will handle the work to print a good looking photo. Different profiles do different translations for different printers/papers. However, judging by the PS work, it appears I need to re-edit a photo for each printer/paper I encounter...just doesn't seem right.
2 In Aperture, I'm confused by the onscreen proofing does not present the same image as what I see in the print preview. I'm selecting the same .icc profile in both locations.
I tried visiting with Spyder support, but am not able to explain myself well enough to help them understand what I'm doing wrong.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
You have understand that maintaining the colour is done by morphing the colourants, and you have understood that matching the digital graphic display (which is emissive) to the print from the digital graphic printer (which is reflective) presupposes a studio lighting situation that simulates the conditions presupposed in the mathematical illuminant model for media independent matching. Basically, for a display-to-print match you need to calibrate and characterise the display to something like 5000-55000 kelvin. There are all sorts of arguments surrounding this, and you will find your way through them in time, but you now have the gist of the thing.
So far so good, but what of the problem posed by the digital graphic printer? If you are a professional photographer, you are dependent on your printer for contract proofing. Your prints you can pass to clients and to printers, but your display you cannot. So this is critical.
The ICC Specification was published at DRUPA Druck und Papier in Düsseldorf in May 1995 and ColorSync 2 Golden Master is on the WWDC CD for May 1995. Between 1995 and 2000 die reine Lehre said to render your colour patch chart in the raw condition of the colour device.
The problem with this is that in a separation the reflectance of the paper (which is how you get to see the colours of the colourants laid down on top of the paper) and the amount of colourant (solid and combinations of tints) gives you the gamut.
By this argument, you would want to render the colour patch chart with the most colourant, but what if the most colourant produces artifacts? A safer solution is to have primary ink limiting as part of the calibration process prior to rendering of the colour patch chart.
You can see the progression e.g. in the BEST RIP which since 2002 has been owned by EFI Electronics for Imaging. BEST started by allowing access to the raw colour device, with pooling problems and whatnot, but then introduced a primary ink limiting and linearisation.
The next thing you need to know is what colour test chart to send to the colour device, depending on whether the colour device is considered an RGB device or a CMYK device. By convention, if the device is not driven by a PostScript RIP it is considered an RGB device.
The colour patch chart is not tagged, meaning that it is deviceColor and neither CIEBased colour or ICCBased colour. You need to keep your colour patch chart deviceColor or you will have a colour characterisation of a colour managed conversion. Which is not what you want.
If the operating system is colour managed through and through, how do you render a colour test chart without automatically assigning a source ICC profile for the colourant model (Generic RGB Profile for three component, Generic CMYK Profile for four component)?
The convention is that no colour conversion occurs if the source ICC device profile and the destination ICC device profile are identical. So if you are targetting your inkjet in RGB mode, you open an RGB colourant patch chart, set the source ICC profile for the working space to the same as the destination ICC profile for the device, and render as deviceColor.
You then leave the rendered colourant test chart to dry for one hour. If you measure a colourant test chart every ten minutes through the first hour, you may find that the soluble inkjet inks in drying change colour. If you wait, you avoid this cause of error in your characterisation.
As you will mainly want to work with loose photographs, and not with photographs placed in pages, when you produce a contract proof using Absolute Colorimetric rendering from the ICC profile for the printing condition to the ICC profile for your studio printer, here's a tip.
Your eyes, the eyes of your client, and the eyes of the prepress production manager will see the white white of the surrounding unprinted margins of the paper, and will judge the printed area of the paper relative to that.
If, therefore, your untrimmed contract proof and the contract proof from Adobe InDesign or QuarkPress, or a EFI or other proofing RIP, are placed side by side in the viewing box your untrimmed contract proof will work as the visual reference for the media white.
The measured reference for the media white is in the ICC profile for the printing condition, to be precise in the WTPT White Point tag that you can see by doubleclicking the ICC profile in the Apple ColorSync Utility. This is the lightness and tint laid down on proof prints.
You, your client and your chosen printer will get on well if you remember to set up your studio lighting, and trim the blank borders of your proof prints. (Another tip: set your Finder to neutral gray and avoid a clutter of white windows, icons and so forth in the Finder when viewing.)
So far, so good. This leaves the nittygritty of specific ICC profiling packages and specific ICC-enabled applications. As for Aperture, do not apply a gamma correction to your colourant patch chart, or to colour managed printing.
As for Adobe applications, which you say you will be comparing with, you should probably be aware that Adobe InDesign CS3 has problems. When targetting an RGB printing device, the prints are not correctly colour managed, but basically bypass colour management.
There's been a discussion on the Apple ColorSync Users List and on Adobe's fora, see the two threads below.

  • I need helping using iAds in my application.

I need helping using iAds in my application. I currently am not using any storyboards. I am using Sprite builder for my UI.
I attatched an image ot show all the different file name I have.
Everyone is being used & they all work fully.
The "iAdViewController.h & .m" files are just example codes I looked up and was messing with so that my iAd can work.

I wouldn't even be able to use the Mathscript node in an executable?
What I am trying to do is make a user configurable data stream.
They tell me how many bytes are in the stream and what parameters they
want to be put in to it.  Currently I have to make vi's that are
called dynamicaly to make the parameters.   Then recompile
the code and send it to them.  This is somewhat of how the config
file is set up so I know how to make the data.
    Data_Type  foo
    Bytes 30
    parameter_name
    function
       byte#          format
    sync
    foo_sync
    29               int
    time
    foo_time
    1,2,3,4       double
If I can't use MathScript to allow the user to make there own functions
is there another way that I might be able to do this so I do not have
to recompile the code atleast?  Were I might just be able to make
the new function and send that to them.
    Any Idea would be great.

  • Help - developing a web-based application and supporting web service

I am in need of creating a web service that provides some reusable components, and then creating a web application that is also a client of the web service. Is it ok to put both on the same application server? Can anyone give me a timeframe for how long it takes to create a web service + web application from scratch? I'm sorry if the questions sounds dumb, I am a newbie to this and am just trying to learn as I go. Thank you for any help!

In answer to your first question, yes. You can have both your web service and web application on the same application server. This is a normal development scenario for lots of applications. As far as a timeframe on how long it takes to create a web service + web application from scratch that depends on the complexity of both the web service and application you are writing. A simple web service and application written by an experienced web services developer could be written in a day. A more complex application could take weeks/months.
    Hope this helps!

  • Multiple users logged into one server, each users printer has a different name, application needs ONE name to print to.

Multiple users logged into one server, each users printer has a different name, application needs ONE name to print to.
I'm NOT in any way a Terminal Services expert and I need help trying to get an application program working in a multi-user environment.
The issue is that the printer changes for every user that is logged in. The application needs to print NOT to the default printer, but to a "special" printer which is selected in the application... let's call it a label printer to simplify the explanation.
You have your default regular printer, easy for the application to find that one, and then you have a special printer that labels get printed onto. The application needs to know what printer is the label printer. So we allow the user to select that in the
application and the selection is stored in a config file in
    C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
I don't have access to the application so I can't change how this works.
In the "regular" world, selecting the label printer driver to use should be per machine, NOT per user. When a new user logs into a machine, the physical printer doesn't go "poof" and a new printer suddenly appear. Same printer for all
    users.
Yet in terminal services, the physical machine is "merged" with the virtual machine on the server. And there can be many users logged in at the same time. So each users real machine (and real printer) is injected into the "fake" terminal
services machine. The name of the printers is made unique for each user. So the printers DO go "poof" and change names depending on the user logged into terminal services.
So user "A" logs in and sets up the application to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" (or whatever the name of the printer happens to be), that setting is stored in the ProgramData subfolder, and all is well. Later, user "B" logs
in, and when they print, the application tries to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" which doesn't exist for user B or is only accessible by user A. If user B re-configures, that breaks it for user A.
SOLUTION 1: The way that /should/ work (in my mind) is that you define one "generic" printer in Terminal Services... call it "Virtual Label printer" and when the user wants to print to it, the print job gets re-directed back to whatever
physical printer is actually connected to their local workstation. There is a map of virtual printer to actual printer depending on the current user. The application is told once to print to "Virtual Label Printer" for all users.
SOLUTION 2: Or... there should be some way to make the ProgramData sub folders separate per user. E.g. when user "A" tries to access:
    C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
    they actually get
    C:\UserData\UserA\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
    and user "B" gets
    C:\UserData\UserB\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
So the question I have is: Does either of those solutions exist hidden somewhere in the setup of terminal server? Or is there another way around this issue that I don't know?

I don't really have a "for sure" answer to this, but because people here can't seem to deal with a question that hasn't been answered I'll provide the best answer I did receive from ServerFault.com user Nathan:
I can feel your pain with using old software on terminal servers ...the solution I've come up with definitely won't scale as it requires some manual configuration, but I've gotten this method to work with our label printers (which require to be
printed to an LPT port...yep, that old).
Share your USB-connected printers to the network on each machine. Then, have the user log in on aunique session for each of them
(a TS account cannot be shared among computers for this to work) and install a network printer pointing to the USB one they shared. Try to use a DNS name to account for possible DHCP movements.
After, it should work. Each user can do this since display names can be identical as long as the ports are different (which they are).
This was clarified by the following series of comments:
I think you are on to something here, and I originally advised the admin to do this. The problem he ran into is that it setup the printer names in the TS as "printer on usersworkstation"
and he could not rename it except to change the "printer" to whatever. E.g. the "on userworkstation" remained. I believe there is another way of installing the printer which avoids this, but I can't find it. Ages ago, one used to do NET
USE LPT2 \\computer\printer password /USER:domain\user /PERSISTENT:YES and then tell the driver to print to LPT2 –  James

@JamesNewton That's actually the exact method we used. The way around the "network printer" part is to install it as local printer and map it to a TCP/IP port that way. –  Nathan

You mean in the case where the printers are TCP/IP connected and not local USB / LPT to the users workstation? That makes sense. Wonder if this will work for USB connected printers... –  James

@JamesNewton You'd share the local printer on the client's PC then on the server connect via TCP/IP to it. You'd need static addresses or use DNS names if DHCP, though. –  Nathan

  • Setting up context sensitive help for WebHelp in web application.

    Hi,
I'm working on a help system for a web application. It will include context sensitive help triggered by an icon on the screen, and the Topic will open in an iframe with a set size. The developer has already set up the iframe that pops up when the icons are clicked. He is giving me the ID for the screens with the help icons as a fully qualified java file name. I'm not sure what the correct process would be in RoboHelp to map the ID's to the topics.
    1. Do I create a map file using the list of ID's the developer sends me? Would it be in this format:
    #define Topic_Name Java_File_Name
    2. Do I then add the ID to the appropriate help Topic using Project Setup pod Context-Sensitive Help folder?
    3. When I generate the layout I specify the map file I created above (.h extension)
    3. If the developer already set up the iFrame size, is it correct that I don't need to create a custom window to set up the size? Is there a way to set it so two panes open? (I believe using the method above one pane opens with link to navigation pane)
    Thanks in advance,
    Joanne

  • Help me in developing an application

    hi frnds,
I have to develop an application similar to flexstore. But i
am confused with "states" and how to integrate other mxml to the
main mxml. Will you help me in this.Pls give a tutorial.
    regards

Usually you use view states for cases where a rather smaller
portion of your application needs to change appearance for some
specific purpose, and then often use ViewStack for app navigation
    between components:
Here is a sample app I created to show using ViewStack for an
    entire website:

  • F4 help issue with Webdynpro ABAP application

    Hi,
I am facing a strange issue with the F4 help in my webdynpro abap application.
I have few fields for Purchase Order and Line item on the screen and they have corresponding F4 helps associated with them.
When i select for F4 help, sometimes the screen simply blanks out and a white screen is displayed. When i refresh the screen and try the same scenario again, i can see the value list correctly.
This issue occurs very randomly with no specific pattern. If anyone else has faced this issue earlier, kindly let me know how to get rid of this issue.
Any pointers to resolve this issue will be helpful.
Note: I am using SAP version 702 SP09.
    Thanks,
    Ramanath

    Hi,
we cannot help you from offline, you need to check the standard procedures like
SICF->is your application node is active.
FQDN->check fully qualified name is configured
You can also try to execute standard SAP application, if sap application also has problem running then you may have to get the help of BASiS people to look into that and raise a support ticket.
If sap applications are running and your custom developed applications are not running then look into this application if there is any URL parameters need to supply etc.
