Help printing raw profiling target!!

I know this has been beaten around, but I am looking for help, and the latest information on printing a raw target for printer profiling. I'm having troubles getting a decent target to profile.
First PSCS4, OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), Mac Pro Tower, Epson 1400 inkjet printer with Epson Claria inks. Driver is the Epson SP 1400 Series driver. Nozzle check and print head alignment are fine.
I printed out an untagged RGB test strip file four times on the same sheet of glossy paper. This file has 21 steps of gray, four each of red, green and blue, and three each of cyan, magenta and yellow. I use this file to help me pick the best driver settings when creating RGB printer profiles. In each case, the Epson driver used the exact same settings, with Color Management set to No Color Adjustment. Here are the PS dialog settings I used in each test print:
1. Untagged file, No Color Management in print dialog box
2. Untagged file, Printer Manages Color, RelCol, no BPC (according to Eric Chan, rendering intent is ignored in this mode)
3. File tagged with ARGB, Photoshop Manages Colors, profile set to ARGB destination profile, RelCol, BPC turned off.
4. File tagged with sRGB, Photoshop Manages Colors, profile set to sRGB destination profile, RelCol, BPC turned off.
I've been wary of Photoshop's "No Color Management" for awhile in Snow Leopard due to reported OS override, etc, but I wanted to compare the above four methods. Items 3 & 4 above were reported as workarounds on the Luminous Landscape site.
I found that methods 1 and 2 (NCM and Printer Manages) were very close to each other, within spectro error and usually less than 0.5 Delta E. Item 3 (ARGB to ARGB) should be identical, since it is a null conversion, but it is very different from 1 and 2. Item 4 (sRGB to sRGB) was different from the ARGB to ARGB conversion and also different from 1 & 2 by the widest margin. Holy smokes, folks! So, at least with the PSCS4, OSX 10.6.8 and the Epson 1400, the Luminous Landscape workaround does NOT work. While 1 and 2 seem to be a pretty good match, I have no idea whether they are both accurate RAW output, or whether they are both the same and both similarly flawed.
I just want to build a damn profile. I've been studying and using color management for 15 years, so I am not exactly new to this stuff.
HELP!!!
Thanks,
Lou Dina

Thanks, Dave.
That worked. I just created a glossy profile and got a great print from my new profile.
Best, Lou

  • Profiling targets 24x36 vs 4 x 5

    Hi guys,
I'm profiling an Epson V750 flatbedscanner for filmscanning/transparency. I'm using PMP5 and film IT8 targets in the size of 24x 36 mm and 4 x 5" with the correct refsfiles for each of them.
The It8 targets are actually from bundled packages, no fancy hutch-stuff this time:
    - Nikon filmscanner for the 24 x 36, which is a Silverfast/W.Faust target.
    - Monaco for the 4 x 5 target, which is Kodak and this came with the V750 scanner.
Ok, we're scanning the 4 x 5 target using Silverfast scannerprogram in the HDR mode. This is a completely RAW scan mode in 16 bit. All adjustments are locked out at this setting, no CMS is lurking beneath. Pure, pure RAW at 800 ppi even though the scanner can deliver a fantastic quality at 6400 ppi.
What I've found out is that this profile does a very good job when assigned to the RAW IT8 target itself. From which it was built. The white patch on the trans IT8 4x5 sits around 1% - 3%. But when assigned to smaller positive trans, like a 24x36, this profile lifts highligts so that these blow out in the small trans. It is lifting the the upper quarter tone range of the ramp. It's a general thing, not just when assigned to the smaller IT8..
I've done a bunch of scans and profiles where I did make 180 degrees turns of the target at the same spot as well as moved the target to a new location on the flatbed (in the holder of course). No big differences here. I've built about 20 profiles from different spots. One could suspect uneven ligt distrubution, but no. Very even and not anything to be concerned of at this level of scanning.
When assigning the two profiles on the 24 x 36 I get these numbers in procent (easier to read the diffs than R-G-B values and the channeldiffs are of no interest in this matter):
    Patch, 24x36 profile, 4x5 profile assigned to the24 x 36, 4x5 with own profile

The question is why this is happening when assigning scannerprofiles built from a large tran like 4x5. At first glance it seems to be a good thing thing as it would work like a natural avaraging effect, since collecting over a larger area.
In the zonesystem this was typical when one compared where to expect whiteclipping on paper as small filmsize clipped earlier on the ramp, but it feels a bit strange to put that thinking in this. We're just dealing with a filmbase and a refsfile who tells where the lighter tones are in the upper part.
Yes, we can expect diffs and variables in "batch measured" targets like these. However when comparing the same 4 x 5 profile over both the smaller trans and the larger when assigned, it seems it's not that kind of variable in this case.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Pike
Edit: Ok, the table format screws up completely. The first is the Patch on the IT8, the second column is the value on the 24x 36 mm with it's own profile assigned. The third column is the 24x36 again with the 4x5 profile assigned, the fourth column is the 4x5 target with it's own profile assigned..... Sorry for the messy post.

    Peter,
using perceptual rendering when converting with the monaco created profile gives a lightness bump while relC doesn't. There is a diff between the two renderings in Monaco but not in the Profilemaker conversion. The funny thing is that it's the Perceptual in Monaco that looks closest to Profilemaker, while Perceptual isn't supported in PMP5. ?? Should be the other way around, no?
Sure, Labvalues are what to read, the procentvalues are just a take from the info palette set on greyscale while moving over the greyramp of the open IT8 target in Photoshop. An old habit to have a % readout set up in one corner of the palette. I didn't bother to switch over when I began. I just kept using the procent when it got hot. A bit embarrassing. Doesn't matter with any exact lab values, just a comparison of the relation-diff in the upper part of the ramp between the profiles when assigned to the targets. Simple as that. But I've redone it with L values.

The things that surprised me were that the 4x5 target based profiles built in PMP5 blow up the higher end of the greyramp on smaller trans. Why? It did a good job when assigned to the 4x5 target which to me seems to confirm that the refsfile isn't what's screwed here and the cause of the ******** (scuse me, coulden't resist ;) on the smaller trans 24x36. I'm interested in to hear if this is something anyone else is dealing with too. I'm comparing this to the profiles built from the smaller 24x36 IT8 target. It shoulden't be this diff. I just can't get it together.
A part from that, again, a Monaco created profile keeps the upper part of the ramp a bit better better and gives much smoother transitions in, especially, the yellows where the PMP5 profiles actually gives some banding. I'm really surprised. Considering this is from the big 4x5 target, too. I have not tested the "larger" profile option, yet , in Profilemaker. So far, the default sized setting has been in use. Anyway, as we shoulden't edit scanner/inputprofiles they shoulden't show up these bigger differences. Differences in transitions and smoothness, fine & ok. But not the neutral tone ramp and where the lightness of the same patches is located in a standard IT8. I doubt that this is a matter of the quality of the target itself or the refsfile.
After all, we're doing a characterizing of a scanner with fixed settings, fixed lightsource. To find a "true" rendering from the scanner as far as possible. The variables by nature of printer profiles or cameraprofiles are something else. It's much less involved in scannerprofiling.
I'm just a bit surprised, I thought the 4x5 target would be the way to go with PMP5. I'm happy to hear the Hutch target works fine on the drum. I can't understand why the cheaper target doesnt work better than they do with PMP5 on a decent flatbed like the v750. I'll use the Monaco profile for now. The Monaco EX color pogram refuses the refsfile for the smaller 24x36 since it's not pure Monaco stuff, but Lasersoft. So, I couldent test that one. That's the crazy stuff in the Monaco camp. It's always been more closed and not so openminded as Profilemaker.

  • Where are printer paper profiles stored in Mavericks?

In previous versions of OS X, I could find where my printer paper profiles were stored. I have some test paper profiles that don't work and I want to delete them but I can't find them in Mavericks 10.9.2 I have done a search for their name but apparently they are hidden although they show up in Photoshop and the Printer dialog box. What and where is the folder I need to look in? Thanks for your help.

  • Aperture RAW profiles broken since 10.7.4 update

Since updating to OSX 10.7.4 last week it seems to have broken some of Apertures RAW profiles for some cameras.
My Nikon D700/D300 files are all fine but my RAW files for my Lumix GX1 are green!
I also get the message "This Photo was adjusted using an earlier version of Apple's RAW processing" and then it offers me the option to Reprocess.
This fixes the green issue but doing this file by file when you've imported over 100+ is a real pain. The RAW for the GX1 was supported and was working fine before updating to OSX 10.7.4
    Any ideas whats going on?

See this support article: list: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757
The support for the gx1 seems to have been moved directly into MacOS 10.7.4, and for Aperture this is a change of raw support.

  • Beginner - need help with custom profiles

I've got 30-day demo versions of both Aperture and Lightroom trying to work out which is best for printing using custom profiles I've had done for a selection of textured art papers for use on my Epson R2400. I've read the printing documentation for both products.
In Aperture, I select print from the menu and open the print dialogue window. Then I open the printer settings window choosing the correct media and switching off Epson 'Color Adjustment' and saving the settings. Then I'm selecting my color profile from Aperture's 'ColorSync Profile' option in the print window and making sure 'Black Point Compensation' is selected. Then I'm pressing print.
In Lightroom 2, I select print from the menu and scroll down to the 'Color Management' tab in the print module. Here I'm choosing my custom profile from the drop down list and setting rendering intent as 'Perceptual'. On clicking the print button the default print window opens and I'm switching off Epson 'Color Adjustment' and selecting my preferred paper type. Then I'm pressing print.
Now I will admit that I'm new to printing with profiles and a complete newbie to Aperture and Lightroom. However, my prints from Lightroom are absolutely perfect, but colours are differing in Aperture prints. In particular, prints are slightly lighter and washed-out. I'm wondering if I might be missing a step somewhere in Aperture? It seems strange that both applications follow roughly the same print procedure yet I'm getting different results using the same profiles and images. I'd much rather use Aperture so I'm trying to seek an explanation for the change in colors.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A lot of people including me have had problems in this area. There may have been some problems but in my case I was so absorbed in trying different solutions it is hard to say what worked when.
This works for me using an HP 9180:
    1. In the View drop down select Printing Profile and choose your paper. This step is not critical but can be helpful.
    2. select Print Image and we will work through the menu in sequence.
    3. Select your printer
    4. Click on Print settings
Click on the Cover Page arrows and you will be given a number of other choices. Select Paper Type/Quality. Select your paper and possibly adjust the other values but generally I leave these alone unless i specifically want Borderless printing.
    Click save
    5. back on the print menu select paper size. I usually select best fit next.
    6. Select Colorsync Profile and again select your paper.
    7. Keep Black Point clicked on.
    8. I find that I need to set my Gamma between 1.10 and 1.20.
    9. I usually click on the Loupe and check to see if Sharpening is needed.
    10. Adjust scaling and width to your needs.
    11. I then Print as I have not found that Previewing helps me to improve my Workflow.
It may all seem straightforward but this now works for me.
When this all started there were many saying how important it was to calibrate the screen, many tried this but is still did not help solve the problem. From what i understand all the Canon printers are capable of giving excellent results with Aperture. i hope that you join the community of satosfied users. Good luck.

  • Camera Raw profile

I am wondering if I am supposed to see my camera model in addition to "Adobe Standard Profile" when I go to Camera Raw Profile list.  I have a Sony Alpha Nex-5 and only see the Adobe standard profile. Is that correct? I have the latest Camera Raw installed (6.3) with PSE9.
    Thanks for your help!

I think the Camera Raw profiles exist primarily for Nikon and Canon cameras.

  • Photoshop - Printing RAW Images

    Hi,
I am trying to print RAW file images in photoshop.  The image appears on my iMac exactly the same as the camera.  It is printing completely different.
I did a printer check and the printer is fine.  I printed other images from Photoshop and they are fine.  I converted the RAW images to jpg and tiff and it does not help.  The image and the camera are in RGB.  I made sure Photoshop is in RGB.  I chose to let photoshop manage the color, and then to let the printer manage the color.
I have scoured the internet for solutions.  I contacted Cannon and they said to make sure the color selector was the same on the camera as in Photoshop.
I have run out of ideas.
Anyone out there know what to do?

  • Please help with paper profiles

I'm trying to set a paper profile I use with my canon i560 printer. I set the profile under printing preferences where I set the print quality, color adjustments and intensity then add to the profile tab under printing preferences. Where I seem to have my problem is I can't seem to bring up this profile in the color management tab in printer properties where lightroom should be able to recognise it under color managed by lightroom,,,,,Bob

Bob, if I understand correctly you've set up a media profile for the paper in the Canon print driver, correct? This is different to the profile selectable in Lightroom's "Print Job" properties, which refers to the output profile (*.icc) for the selected paper. If you don't already have one for the Ilford Smooth Gloss paper it's freely available from the Ilford web site.
To set up a print template within Lightroom specific to this paper, select the image settings, layout and print job options (including the output .icc profile for the Ilford paper if managing the colour via LR) as required, then press the "Print Settings..." button. The Canon printer driver dialogue will open, and from that load the profile you created for the Ilford Smooth Gloss paper. Click "OK" to exit. Now.... on the PC there's also a "Page Setup..." button which also opens the printer driver dialogue. Your profile settings should still be showing in that - check everything's as expected and click "OK" to exit. Now click the "Add" button below the Template Browser and give your new template a useful name. It will now use your selected printer driver profile by default.
I hope this is of help to you. If you use more than one size and type of paper then Print Templates are a real boon.

  • Any suggestions on how to print coupons from Target's website?

I am wanting to print coupons from Target's website, but they have done a poor job of supporting us Mac users. I even downloaded Firefox, as it stated that they supported Firefox 3.x for Mac; well, they don't.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!

I am having the same problem and have searched relentlessly for a solution. When I try to print I get the following message:
Unfortunately, you’re trying to print to a device that is not valid for printing coupons. Please check your print setting to make sure your default printer is a standard printer and has paper. If you have a multifunction printer (fax, copy, print), please make sure that “Printer” is set as the default function on your computer.
Click the Try Again button after you’ve selected a new printer and make sure you have paper.
The first time I tried to print from the site it required that I download an applet, which I did. It's called MacCouponPrinter.dmg. I can print from other coupon sites but not Target's.
It's apparently a HUGE problem with couponers as I read probably 50 posts on various website, some of which offer solutions, but none of which have worked for me or any others as far as I can tell from the posts.
If anyone has suggestions, please chime in. Also, one more thing... It seems that the Target coupons page somehow accesses my printer directly without allowing me to go through the print dialog box to change any settings. Don't know if that's a helpful fact, but...
    Thanks in advance!

  • Printing RAW-images from Lightroom 1.3

When I print RAW-images directly from Lightroom 1.3 (to a Canon Pixma 8500) I get a distinct pink bias in the red colors. The same happens with exported TIFF-file in Prophoto RGB-format. I suppose that's the color space also used with the RAW-format so that's probably what's causing the problem. Printing TIFF-exports in Adobe RGB works fine. Is there a straight forward way to avoid this problem and print the correct colors from RAW/TIFF-Prophoto format?

Are you calibrating your screen using a hardware profiler? If not, you cannot possibly expect the colors to print as you see them on the screen. Next, how are you printing? managed by Lightroom or Managed by printer? The color space of the original (RAW does not have a color space BTW) is immaterial in principle. If you are printing managed by Lightroom, you need to absolutely make sure you turn off color management in the printer driver and that you choose the right profile for the paper you are printing on. Most of the times either of those is what is done wrong. If you are printing managed by driver, you should be aware that some drivers are not correctly written to color manage. I doubt the driver for that printer is though.
    >The same happens with exported TIFF-file in Prophoto RGB-format.
How are your printing this? The space of the source should not matter in a color managed workflow. So if you use something like photoshop, there should be no difference whatsoever between printing a ppRGB TIFF and a adobeRGB tiff as both will get converted to the printer profile.

  • LR3 Print Module: printing to profile - unable to change Color Matching

    Hi
I use LR3 in 32 bit mode (there is no 64bit driver for HP DesignJet 130n).
I always print to profiles. In LR2 I had to make sure that in the PrintSettings the option Color Matching was set to "Vendor Machine", because although I saved this setting, LR never remembered.
Now with LR3 the option is again set to"Color Sync" but this time it cannot be changed.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks
    Bruno

    Bob,
My problem is exactly what you say: you must find the appropriate place in the printer interface where you can disable all color management performed by the printer driver.
In OS X (10.5.) I know only of two places where I can handle Color Management: "Print Settings" and "Profile" in the LR3 Print Module.
By default LR3 sets the Print Settings "Color Matching" to "Vendor Machine" if I choose "Managed by the Printer" for the Profile.
By default LR3 sets the Print Settings "Color Matching" to "ColorSync" if I choose a custom printer/paper profile.
Where/what is "the appropriate place in the printer interface where you can disable all color management performed by the printer driver" ?

    Hi,
Not sure on your full requirements, but you can set the printer name on the concurrent program, force the print to 1 copy, and I would guess you don't need the file name.
