Help reading data passed as a parameter

Question

I have a servlet which connects to a database and brings back data picked from a form. I now wish to chnage this servlet into a bean so i can call the bean and pass in parameters from another servlet something like this:
finderBean bean = new finderBean(category, price);
          request.setAttribute("valid", bean); // i understand this as meaning on the jsp page i set id as valid is that correct??????????My question is in the bean i use to just use:
Category = request.getParameter("category");
price = request.getParameter("price");to get the paremeters from a form, what will i use to read the parmeters that are passed in when the bean is created now?

ok so:

is what i use to pass the user request to the bean, its just in the bean i am having trouble can you give an example of how to pick up the category and price in the bean?
