Help! - XSU, object-relational views and chaching

I'm working with Oracle's SQL utility XSU using the PL/SQL API (xmlgen package) to generate XML from object-relational views in Oracle 8.1.7.
Sometimes when I change the definition of the view or the objects the view is based on the changes seem not be be reflected in the generated output. I'm getting errors for datatypes I've changed (Java still wants the "old" datatype) or the XML tag generated still reflects the old column name of the object. I get the new definition when I restart the database but that's not really a workable option.
I suppose the objects/view or something else must be cached somewhere.
Does anyone know what is going on?
Where is this stuff cached?
Can I somehow flush the cache?
Can I turn the cache off ? (might be useful for a development environment)
Any help'd be appreciated!

Peter,
Glad to see you took my advice and posted your question over here. Although I am a frequent user of the Oracle usenet groups, I have found that this is a much better place to get help with Spatial. My experiences suggest that the population of people using spatial is small--and of them the ones that really know alot are few and far between. I can only claim to be in the former group.
As far as your problem goes--this is probably something you've already considered--is there a way to model the data such that you don't have to replicate the geometry components? Another option would be to handle the replication without using snapshots. Examples would be to export the data and then ftp/copy it to the target machines and import it. If you need real-time replication you could experiment with triggers that execute INSERTs/UPDATEs/DELETEs on the remote databases. This of course has its own issues--but you're going to end up with some sort of compromise no matter how you slice this.
Of course you could use the relational model. I have never used it so I'm hard pressed to give any advice on it. As I posted on the usenet board, it is heading for desupport in 9i Release 2 according to the documentation available. So if you go relational you'll eventually have to migrate to object/relational. I'm not sure how automatic (or non-automatic) that process is. Hopefully someone on here will have some more concrete advice on that.
Good luck.
Matt.

  • Working with Object Relational model and Eclipse

    Hello,
    I have mad some types and typed tables in a schema on oracle 10g.
    My database respects the Object Relational model, in which I work with VARRAY, TYPES, NESTED TABLES, PL/SQL,...
    I have already install Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, and also have the Weblogic server, And I can generate tables. But the problem is that it gives to me this tables with wrong types, until they contains in fact other tables as Objet column, and also the types are not supported.
    Please need a help !
    Thank's in advance :)

    Hi,
    I want to make sure I understand the problem but will try to give you some information as well. So you have an Oracle 10g database in which you are using the object-relational database model with VARRAY's, etc. You say you are also trying to generate tables, but the generation is not working correctly. Are you using the "Generate tables from entities..." functionality? What is the source of the generated tables? I assume you generating from some type of JPA entity? Could you give a small example of the source you are generating from?
    In order to generate proper tables of this type, you would need to be using special TopLink/EclipseLink annotations such as @Array so the persistence provider would know that they are "special" and not just regular entities that would create standard relational tables.

    Thank you for your replay,
    well I'm generating that with "Generate tables from entities" of eclipse link.
    this is an example of what I have in the database:

  • Need help in Object-Relational Mapping

    I'm writing a simple two-tiered business application with Swing application on the client side and a DBMS on the server side. To make my client code more maintainable, I decided to create Business Objects instead of having my client accessing the database directly via SQL. For simplicity, I'm not using any features from the J2EE framework, and the Business Objects will be hosted on the client side, with one-to-one mapping to tables in the database. Since this is my first attempt in Object-Relational Mapping, I'm faced with the following problems:
    1. What kind of methods are appropriate for business objects? For example, if I have a Machine and Employee entity. A Machine is owned by an employee, and this is represented in the DB by storing the employee ID (not the name) as a foreign key in the Machine table. Let's say in the user interface I have a table that needs to display the list of Machines, but instead of displaying the owner employee's ID, I want to display the owner employee's name by doing a join select. Should the findMachines() method always perform a join select to get owner's name and store it in the Machine object which is returned, or should findMachines() simply return the owner's ID so the UI will need to make another SQL call (through the Employee object) to get the employee's name? The latter is more elegant, but would it be horribly inefficient if there are lots of machines to be displayed (and for each machine we make a separate select call to get the owner's name).

    Business objects should be separate from how they're persisted.
    When you say object-relational mapping, do you mean a tool like Hibernate? Or are you writing your own persistence layer using JDBC and SQL?
    I'd recommend that you read about the Data Access Object pattern and keep the persistence code out of the business objects themselves:

  • Listing New Objects Like views and tables

    Hi...
    Are we able to use SELECT statement to get a list of objects like tables or views which created in a given time frame ?
    For example, since OCT 2010...
    Thanks.

    hi,
    these objects are depend on your interest.
    actually there are three types of tables which stores the information about objects:
    1. user_objects: which contains all the objects that are owned by the owner of the schema.
    2. all_objects: this shows you all the objects that are acccesible to you, i.e. may be you can have access on some other user's objects.
    3. dba_objects: which shows the objects in the database.

  • Retrieving data from a relational table and CLOB as a whole XML file

    I created the table lob_example and I have managed to insert XML document into it using XML SQL Utility. In this document I put contents of <DESCRIPTION> tag into CDATA section.
    LOB_EXAMPLE
    Name Null? Type
    ID NOT NULL NUMBER
    DESCRIPTION CLOB
    NAME VARCHAR2(40)
    But I could not retrieve this data properly. I can think of only one solution - to parse and build the whole XMLDocument. I found the suggestion of another solution to use Oracle8i views to do that in http://technet.oracle.com/tech/xml/infoocs/otnwp/about_oracle_xml_products.htm, but this text is not clear enough for me.
    I would like to quote the fragment from document mentioned above, which is ambiguous for me:
    "Combining XML Documents and Data Using Views
    Finally, if you have a combination of structured and unstructured XML data, but still want to view and operate on it as a whole, you can use Oracle8i views. Views enable you to construct an object on the "fly" by combining XML data stored in a variety of ways. So, you can store structured data (such as employee data, customer data, and so on) in one location within object -relational tables, and store related unstructured data (such as descriptions and comments) within a CLOB. When you need to retrieve the data as a whole, you simply construct the structure from the various pieces of data with the use of type constructors in the view's select statement. The XML SQL Utility then enables retrieving the constructed data from the view as a single XML document."
    The main question is - how to use type constructors in the view's select statement?

    Hello
    Sorry for asking the same question again, but any responses would be greatly appreciated.
    How to use type constructors in the view's select statement?
    I could not find any answers for this question on Technet. Maybe the other approaches are more efficient to combine the part of data from CLOB with data from other column types?
    Thank you

  • Benefits of object-relational

    Hi,
    I am having a problem with the object-relational features and JDBC.
    It seems that when I select objects from the database into my Java program, those objects can't be used after the Connection is returned to the pool.
    I want to read a bunch of objects from the database and cache them in my program. When I use those objects later, I reference their attributes using the accessor methods. If I have returned the Connection to the pool, I get a "Logical handle no longer valid" error.
    I'm using Oracle 9.0.1, getting a Connection from a OracleConnectionCacheImpl. I am using JPublisher to generate my Java classes, telling it to use the ORAData interface.
    The object features of Oracle looked really nice -- database objects are nicely materialized as Java objects in my program. But what good does it do to have all this fancy generated code if I need to create my own objects from the retrieved objects if I want to use them later?
    Am I missing something? Any comments or pointers?
    Here is the relevant portion of the code.
    try {
    DataSource ds = (DataSource)JndiClient.getConnectionPoolDataSource(poolAlias, "test1", "test1");
    conn = (OracleConnection)ds.getConnection();
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
    rset = (OracleResultSet)stmt.executeQuery("SELECT VALUE(p) FROM process_types p");
    if (rset.next()) {
    np = (NapProcessType)rset.getORAData(1, NapProcessType.getORADataFactory());
    catch (Exception e) {
    System.err.println("Exception: " + e);
    e.printStackTrace();
    finally {
    // Free up resources.
    try {
    if (cs != null)
    cs.close();
    if (rset != null)
    rset.close();
    if (conn != null)
    conn.close();
    catch (SQLException ignore) {
    try {
    System.out.println("getPtName: " + np.getPtName()); // causes Exception
    catch (Exception e) {
    System.err.println("Exception: " + e);
    e.printStackTrace();
    Thanks.

    Peter,

    Good luck.

  • ExtendScript2 CS3 Object Model Viewer (very complicated - any alternative viewer ??)

    hallo iam just starting with JavaScript in CS3 and what i found most confusing is the Adobe's Object Model Viewer in ExtendScript2...
    its no help whatsoever and i didnt figure out the logics of the various dictionary items listed, whatsoever...
    if this is currentlly the only complete reference to CS3 JavaScript model than god help us....
    the ExtendScript2 Object Model Viewer needs to be COMPLETELLY REWORKED to become a full powered dictionary tool instead of an unorganized pile of items
    have you tried InDesign CS3 AppleScript Dictionary in Apple's ScriptEditor... thats a dictionary of object model as i would imagine
    1) its FULLY tree-structured dictionary from topmost level down
    2) all items are categorized and sorted BY TYPE using various icons
    3) every item has a properties catalog card with nice english explanations of that function with hyperlinks to all other relevant items
    IS THERE ANY ALTERNATIVE TO VIEW CS3 JAVASCRIPT OBJECT MODEL AND NOT USE THE EXTENDSCRIPT2 WEAK VIEWER ?????

    Hi Rosta,
    I have to admit that I don't understand. I see very little difference between the ESTK object model viewer and the AppleScript dictionary viewer. If anything, I think the ESTK version is superior because it connects methods with their objects--something that the AppleScript viewer doesn't do at all. But I pretty much find them equivalent.
    Regardless, the descriptions are *identical* between the object model viewer in the ESTK, the AppleScript dictionary viewer, and the Visual Basic/VBA object browser. All descriptions come from the scripting resources in InDesign, and all languages use the same description string.
    Jongware's HTML version, however, is much better than any of the above. Its hyperlinking is very good, and everything else can be found with your browser's Find command.
    Relying on the object model viewers has freed me from the task of maintaining the reference PDFs--which was taking almost all of my time. Without that burden, I can focus on writing the Scripting Guides, Scripting Tutorial, and example scripts. While I agree that the object model viewers aren't perfect, I believe that this is a better use of my time. I think that scripting examples are more useful, overall, than reference documentation (which simply repeats the information from the scripting resources, in any case).
    One very nice thing--because we have to rely on the object model viewers, we were allowed to fix literally hundreds of errors in the descriptions in the scripting resources.
    Thanks,
    Ole

  • Need clarification - Object Relational Mapping

    Folks
    I have searched internet , but I could find a simple answer .
    I am preparing for my Interview. I just want to reply for this question in a very simple answer
    if the employer asked me what is Object Relational Mapping and Explain Cascade and the possible values .
    The above question in the context of " Hibernate " .
    I am not sure if this is the correct forum category I am asking , please guide me .
    Thanks
    Matt

    The best simple answer is to say "I have no idea about those terms but I am eager to learn".
    There is no simple answer that will give the impression you know about such stuff when you
    don't, that will not expose you immediately to great embarrassment if they pose the simplest
    followup question.

  • Object relational mapping (ORM) libraries?

    Hi,
    This is an easy one hopefully. I'm just after some recommendations for a strong ORM packages on top of JDBC.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Hibernate is a powerful tool, but it can be a bit overwhelming at first. There are a lot of things that can go wrong and you will get strange error messages that you will not always be able to fix with the manual. Expect to rely on google trying to solve the issues.
    Then there are the performance issues: it is only too easy to create very slow queries using Hibernate, you will need to put work and effort into designing your object relations properly, and some time into benchmarking and optimizing. But this is the same for all ORM packages really.

  • Object-relational data model

    Hi, I am facing to choose an DBMS product for a big project. Does 8i support an object-oriented or object-relational data model?
    Thank you!

    Hi, Oracle8 and Oracle8i will provide you object relational model. It is not pure object-oriented solution. In the field of databases it is difficult to impliment pure object-oriented solution now a days. But it is easy to understand and design an object-relational design and implimentation. In Oracle8 there are some very useful facilities for such a design like the concept of nested tables. I had a project of defence nature and design in object-relational technique and find much easy and understandable then pure relational approach. If it is possible for you then please be contect with me on mail and send me a little information about your work and experience.

  • Storing XML using XSU, object VIEW and INSTEAD OF trigger

    Here is the point:
    I've got 2 tables which are linked:
    CREATE TABLE dept (
    deptno NUMBER PRIMARY KEY,
    deptname VARCHAR2(20)
    CREATE TABLE emp (
    empno NUMBER PRIMARY KEY,
    empname VARCHAR2(20),
    deptno NUMBER REFERENCES dept(deptno)
    I've got the following message, which I want to insert in the tables using XSU (I already have a PL/SQL stored procedure which work perfectly for insertion into 1 table, using DBMS_XMLSave.insertXML or xmlgen.insertXML):
    <DEPT>
    <DEPTNO>10</DEPTNO>
    <DEPTNAME>IT</DEPTNAME>
    <EMP>
         <EMPNO>1</EMPNO>
         <EMPNAME>John</EMPNAME>
    </EMP>
    <EMP>
         <EMPNO>1</EMPNO>
         <EMPNAME>Phil</EMPNAME>
    </EMP>
    </DEPT>
    So I've created the following object:
    CREATE TYPE emp_t AS OBJECT
    empno NUMBER,
    empname VARCHAR2(20)
    CREATE TYPE emplist_t AS TABLE OF emp_t;
    CREATE TYPE dept_t AS OBJECT
    deptno NUMBER,
    deptname VARCHAR2(20),
    emplist emplist_t
    Now I understand that I should create an object VIEW and an INSTEAD OF trigger (That's what I read many times),
    but I don't know how to structure the view and the trigger.
    Could you help? (Example of a similar context, piece of code)
    Thanks a lot
    Marion

    Hi John,
    I have exactly the same issue as you experienced back in January. I have a complex data modelling requirement which requires the need to pivot rows into columns using ROW_NUMBER() and PARTITION clauses. To hide the complexity from the middle tier, I have created a database view and appropriate INSTEAD OF triggers and mapped my EO to the view. I have overriden the lock() method on the EO implementation class (to avoid ORA-02014) and would like to try the same solution you used with the pl/sql call to lock the record.
    My question is, how did you manage the release of the lock if the transaction was not rolled back or committed by your application i.e. if the user closed the browser for instance.
    In my naivity, I would like to think that the BC4J framework would release any locks for the database session when it found the servlet session to be terminated however my concern is that the lock would persist and cause complications.
    Any assistance greatly appreciated (if you would be willing to supply your lock() method and pl/sql procedure logic I would be even more grateful!).
    Many thanks,
    Dave

  • Inserting data into relational views of object tables

    I hope someone could help me to solve the following problem:
    I would like to design an object-relational database in O8i. Unfortunatly the client-software (GIS) can only understand relational data (except the object type 'geometry'). So I created relational views on my object tables. But now it is not possible to insert data in those views. Do I have to create triggers on those views for inserting data ???
    Nevertheless: Updating data in views makes no problems.
    Thank you for reading this and I look foreward to hearing from you soon.
    Christian Heil

    Hi Mohammed,
    I guess following is your requirement
    List1 tile is attached to "BOList1". On button press you wanted the data to be persisted to Business object "BOList1History"
    I assume that you have created "BOLIst1History" properly by associating a write Bdoc etc etc.
    Write a method in Business object "BOList" called ZUpdateHistory. This new method should contain code for creating an instance of "BOLIST1History" and fill the property values as per your requirement. Call this method from the Button press event as follows
    anchor.bo.ZUpdateHistory
    Hope this helps

    Hi,
    U can use FM RSAU_READ_MASTER_DATA.
    Give as input the info object(I_IOBJNM=0MAT_PLANT) and attribute name(I_ATTRNM=0MRP_CONTROL).
    Output u will get the value of that attribute which u want(E_ATTRVAL=ZC_MRPAMC).
    Hope it helps

  • Creating a master-detail relation between a view and a table

    Hi all,
    I have a problem with creating a master-detail relation between a database-view with lots of customer data and a small table with per customer a list of entities of our companies who may work for that customer.
    Somehow I seem to be unable to create a relation between these two. I can't find where I can make a foreign key using Toplink to implement the relationship. And neither can I get a Viewlink object doing the job using ADF Business Components.
    Somebody any suggestions on this problems?
    Regards,
    Birgit

    There is a key relationship between two fields which form the primary key in the main table of the view and two fields in the second table.
    I created a viewlink manually, but I still couldn't get the data correct i.e. a form with one record of a customer from the main view and a small table with all entities of our company who can make performances for that customer.
    I tried to find a manual or a how-to on this topic but I didn't find anything helpfull yet.
    Regards,
    Birgit
    After a couple more tries, I got the master-detail working. With all the fiddling I am not sure what caused the problem but I think the finally action was checking which fields of the view were marked as primary keys.
    Now everthing is up and running.
