Hide a admin account in System Preferences

Hi, I am trying to hide a admin user in the Accounts Pane in System Preferences. I followed the only instructions I could find http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20080127172157404, but it only hides it in login and fast user switching. Anybody got some ideas?

Follow these steps to hide a user from the Accounts pane in System Preferences:
1. Right click on the account you want to hide in the Accounts pane in System Preferences and choose "Advanced Options". You should be logged in as another admin account while doing this with the Accounts window unlocked.
2. Change the User ID to a number between 300 and 499. e.g. 401 is usually free. You can check which numbers are free by executing "dscl . -list /Users UniqueID" in the Terminal. You will see a list of all the accounts on the machine most of which are already hidden and used various services in OS X.
3. Change the Home Directory setting to /var/nameof_user_tohide so that other admin users won't delete it inadvertently or otherwise.
4. Click OK to save these settings and then quit System Preferences
5. You need to move the user's home directory to /var and change the ownership of the user's home folder now that you have changed the user's ID. E.g. In Terminal:
mv /Users/nameof_user_tohide /var
chown -R 401 /var/nameof_user_tohide
6. Tell OS X to hide user's with a User ID less than 500 (This wasn't required in earlier versions of the OS): In Terminal: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow Hide500Users -bool YES
7. Reboot and enjoy!

How do you disable mobile account settings/parental controls

My school had a one-to-one macbook program, but I switched schools. Now i have a heavily restricted computer. They had my account set to mobile and had parental controls enabled, so I used single user mode to create a new admin (remove /var/db/.applesetupdone and reboot) and remove them. However, even though no account has parental controls turned on, they are still enabled somewhere for all accounts, even admins. I have two questions: how do i disable mobile account settings, and where are the parental controls files located? I found some in /library/managed preferences/<account name here> , but editing these gives only temporary relief from parental controls, and they are reset when i restart. There has to be somewhere else that parental controls are flagged as on/set to sync on login. i removed the actual parental controls executables and stuff somewhere in /system but after that i couldnt open activity monitor and i didnt want to risk a reboot. please help me as this is very annoying. btw im on OS X 10.6.7

Try this..
Open System Preferences/MobileMe and select the Sync tab.
Deselect the box where you see: Synchronize with MobileMe. The last sync will noted at the bottom left side of the window.

Disabling an account deleted its mailboxes

I was in the process of practicing with Mail having decided it's time I migrated from Eudora which I've been using for years, but when I disabled an account that I'd set up in Mail and had been sending test emails to, its mailboxes emptied. Is this a known bug or did I do something worng?

When you say you disabled that account, do you mean in Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced tab, & unchecking the Enable this account button?
If so, checking Enable this account should bring them back, is that not so?

Creating Guest Account Crashes System Preferences

I recently replaced an old mac mini G4 with the newest low end mac mini, the 1.83ghz core 2 duo with combo drive model.
I restored everything to the new machine with my time machine backup. Unfortunately, the guest account didn't get restored, and when I try to enable the guest account, System preferences crashes, so in order to do anything I have to force quit system prefs. After force quitting system prefs, I am unable to open applications using the dock. I have to reboot the computer in order to get anything to work again, but somehow enabling the guest account just wont work, and always crashes.
What can I do to fix this?

It happened to me also, on my imac and my MacBook Air.
It seems that user account migration somehow confuses the "guest user" machinery, which totally trashes securityd which dies of sudden death and from then on nothing works on the computer.
The solution is to do the following in System Preferences:
0. Your system guest account must be disabled (it already is if you have the described symptoms).
1. Create new standard account with name "guest" and short name "guest".
IMPORTANT: short name must be "guest" - OS will suggest "guest1", but you must edit that into "guest".
2. Enable system guest account in System Preferences (check the "Allow guests to log into this computer" switch). It will work now that "guest" name is taken.
This action will create user account with short name "guest1" with all the properties of guest (clean-up after logout etc.).
3. Completely delete standard user "guest", which you created in step 1 (check "delete all data and folder now").
4. Disable system guest account (uncheck the switch).
5. Right-click on system guest account icon and choose "Advanced" or whatever (there is only one menu item anyway) and change short name from "guest1" to "guest".
6. Enable system guest account.
Voila. You now have working guest account (well, I have it, and hopefully you will, too)...
P.S. I am not sure whether you need to log-in/out/restart between steps. I remember I did some of that dance, but probably it is not necessary...

TS3989 New MacAir but photostream does not work. Message though everything is on. "In order to use Photo Stream, you have to be signed into your iCloud account in System Preferences." And,

I am signed into my account but get the following message: In order to use Photo Stream, you have to be signed into your iCloud account in System Preferences. I go to system preferences and then get a message that says that my account cannot be accessed. However, I am using my icloud account for email and other items and it works fine. Any thoughts?

Are you getting this messages in iPhoto? If so try the following (again?):
Log out of iCloud in the System/iCloud preference pane and disable Photo Stream in iPhoto's Photo Share preference pane. Then log back in and re-enable, respectively. That should jump start Photo Stream.

that is a drop down, showing the results from another list based on our selection.
We have used SP services for that.
But, date conversion is wrong on var pubdate= new date(dateselected.value) line.
It is showing "NaN(Not a number)" . date format it is giving DDMMYYYY.
But, i need MMDDYYYY. How can we convert in JavaScript.

Missing User Field in Disable Individual Accounts section

We are running on Vibe 3.4.0 build 2835. We have a couple of issues here that has to do with managing users in Vibe. We use LDAP to populate our user accounts in Vibe. Being in a university, our users come and go a lot. They get disabled and re-enabled in eDirectory. When a user gets disabled in eDirectory, they get disabled in Vibe too. When the user comes back and is re-enabled in eDirectory, their account in Vibe does not automatically get re-enabled. I have to go into "User Accounts" in the "Administration Console", select the "Disable/Delete Accounts" tab, locate the disabled user and check the box beside the disabled user, scroll all the way down the list and hit the "Enable Selected Accounts" button. We ask the enabled user to try and login to Vibe and they get a "login failed" error message, even when I do a search of the user in Vibe and their account shows up. This is problem 1. So, next thing I do is to delete the user so I can re-synchronize the user back into Vibe through LDAP sync. The Vibe 3.4 Administration Guide (page 177, Deleting Individual Accounts, item 6) indicates that there is supposed to be a User Field where I can type in the name of the user and I would be able to select the user from the drop-down list that is supposed to appear. I do not see this "User Field" where I can type in the user's name. This is problem 2. So, I end up having to go to the "Select From All Accounts" section, go from page to page until I find the user to delete. Deleting a user in Vibe takes such a long time for us because we have thousands of users and it takes very long to go from one page to the next to get to a user who's first name is towards the end of the alphabet. If the "User Field" existed as the guide indicated, then it would not be such a big deal to delete a user. Even better, if the account were re-enabled in Vibe and the user is able to use it. Or even much better if the user's account in eDirectory were enabled and the account in Vibe were automatically enabled when an LDAP sync is executed. Would appreciate any information in getting this process of re-enabling users in Vibe working better for us, and help in getting the missing User Field to show up. By the way, I've tried this on Chrome, IE, and FireFox and everything I've described here works the same way on the different browsers, including the missing field.

Rules are disabled after disabling/enabling account.

I have an applescript that enables or disables my work account depending on whether or not I have a VPN connection. My problem occurs when:
1. The work account is disabled
2. Mail is restarted
3. The work account is enabled again
At this point all of my rules associated with the work account are disabled. I can't imagine that this is the intended behavior.
I can re-enable all of the rules with Applescript, but it seems like I shouldn't have to.
The problem can be reproduced without using Applescript by disabling/enabling the account in Mail preferences.

A little more info on the subject of rules, monitors, and alerting:
Alerts based off of Rules will not close themselves, they will always need to be closed manually. If they were alerts based off of Monitors they would (in most cases) close themselves after disabling them. If you don't want to script closing the alerts based
off the rules you can always filter or sort your alerts in the console and select all or selectively select the ones you want to close all at once and then right click and close the alerts based off rules. One other thing, for alerts based off monitors
it is usually best to reset the health of an object and let the monitor close itself rather than close an alert based of a monitor if you have a need to close it. That is unless something funky happened where the health of the object changed to healthy
and for some reason the alert didn't close in which case you can close it. The reason you dont want to just close an alert based off a monitor is because it wont reset the health of the object being monitored and will therefore not re-alert if the issue returns.

To get some errors about group policy due to disabled an account

I have an active directory on windows 2012 datacenter. there is a domain on it. it works well.
Also there is a another AD on another location. there is another domain on it. also it works too.
there is a trust relationship between 2 domains.
I disabled an account on first AD server 4 days ago. and then my colleague who manages second AD, notified that started to recieve some errors from eventviewer and have an issue about their group policy.
the issue event as below;
The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not authenticate to the Active Directory service on a domain controller
(LDAP Bind function call failed). Look in the details tab for error code and description.
Event ID 1006
Event Source Group Policy
I think the concerning account was built on the second AD for a service. But we don't know how we can find the account on the second AD server in order to change it.
How can I fix the issue?

What account did we disable? We can check the error code (displayed as a decimal) and error description fields of Event ID 1006 to see if more information can be found.

Can I remotely disable my account info on someone else's mac?

I was having trouble sending large emails with my macbook air - so I created my yahoo email account in the mail app of my uncle's Mac to see if it was my macbook or my email account that had the problem (this email issue is now closed). When I'd finished, I removed my yahoo account from the mail app. We've now realised that he still had access to my notes, contacts, calendar and imessages. He assures me that he's now disabled my yahoo account from system preferences but is there anyway, from my own macbook, I can assure that he cannot re-enable it? At the moment, he will be able to just go straight into the preferences on his mac, enable and then have access to everything again - which we didn't realise when we were testing out the email problem!
Any help would be appreciated!
PS - this is not an i-Tunes or computer authorisation issue - which is all I can find help about on the communities.

You also needed to remove the Keychain entry for your Yahoo login. Just removing the account from the Mail App doesn't remove that keychain entry. Your Uncle can do it for you or you can ask he to allow you Remote Access to his Mac through Screen Sharing and forwarding the port for the Screen Sharing system through his internet router. If that is all to complicated just take a drive over to his home and do it yourself.
No need to change your password, although that will also work.

Disable Multi Accounts Action

I would like to disable the “disable”/”enable” action for multiple accounts at the same time on the Accounts->Find Users tab. I know how to do this for List Accounts tab (customizing User List Library form). But I don’t know how to disable these actions for multiple accounts from the Find Users tab.

No, I want to disable "disable/enable" actions for multi user accounts from Find Users tab. For example, I can do it for Accounts List tab and if I select several users and do Disable action from User Actions list menu, I retrieve error message like "Multiple selections are not allowed for the 'Disable' action." (customize <argument name='selectionMode' value='single'/> for field <Field name='disableUserAction'> in "User List Library"). How do I implement this functionality on Find Users tab?

My mom comes and visits occasionally. I have an account setup for her, but I would like it disabled when she isn't here.

While it is possible to hide an enabled account from the "Login Window" and "fast user switching menu" (at least when it isn't logged in to the GUI), keeping a hidden account that doesn't have a password enabled all the time probably isn't a good idea.
Modifying the value of the 'authentication_authority' property in the user's entry in the "NetInfo" database will allow an account to be disabled, and should prevent it from appearing in the "Login Window" and "FUS" menu.
Try launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "NetInfo Manager.app", authenticate to "unlock" the padlock in the lower left corner, navigate through "/" > "users" in the top panel and select the user to be disabled in the rightmost column.
In the lower panel, locate the property called 'authentication_authority', and click to edit its "value". Insert the text (case-sensitive; omit quotation marks) ";DisabledUser;" before what is currently there. For example, if the current value is ";ShadowHash;", change it to ";DisabledUser;;ShadowHash;". Then quit "NetInfo Manager.app", agreeing to save changes. To re-enable the account, just change the value back to what it was before.
Be careful working with "NetInfo Manager.app" many things can't be "undone", and there is the potential to mess.
As an alternative, you could download the "Server Admin Tools" from Apple and use "WorkGroup Manager.app", but that might be overkill. It will, however, allow you enable / disable accounts by clicking a checkbox...
