Hide dot files

I found a web site which tells us how to hide the . files which windows users can see but apple users cant.
This needs to be added to the smb.conf file
[global]
veto files = /.*/Thumbs.db/
delete veto files = yes
but in etc and the samba folder the smb.conf files say 'do not edit this file they are created automatically'
Does this mean that if I add these lines manually they will disappear the next time I make a change in Server Administrator?
Thanks
Paul

Server Admin manages the configuration files for Samba, and this is how it works:
The usual Samba configuration file is kept in /etc/smb.conf, but that isn't the only one in Leopard. The usual smb.conf file has an include line that pulls information from another smb.conf file at /var/db/smb.conf. In Leopard, the synchronize-preferences tool writes to /var/db/smb.conf, and that contains most of the SMB preferences. You'll even find that entries in /etc/smb.conf and /var/db/smb.conf may conflict. In such cases, /var/db/smb.conf will take precedence.
The usual /etc/smb.conf also has an include that defines what Samba calls "usershares," which are normal share points. This usual smb.conf references additional configuration files in /var/samba/shares, which is what you've observed.
Typically, in Leopard, Apple tools do not write to the usual /etc/smb.conf file. Instead, system-wide sharing settings for SMB are taken from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.smb.server.plist and are written to /var/db/smb.conf by synchronize-preferences. This is all automatic, regardless of where you're making changes to the SMB service - from System Preferences (Mac OS X client), Server Admin or Server Preferences (Server). A similar tool called synchronize-shares will take share point information and write that to a file for each share point in /var/samba/shares. The share point information is kept in the system's local directory domain in /Local/Default/SharePoints.
So, if you want to make custom changes to the SMB service in Leopard, stop the service, and edit the /etc/smb.conf file after you've backed-up the original. Just know that your changes may be overridden by Apple's in /var/db/smb.conf, and there's no easy way to prevent that.

  • Hiding Dot Files on NSS Volumes

    Hi All,
    Apologies if this is a settled issue but I can't find a reference to it. I have users mounting the same directory (NSS, Netware 6.5) from Mac and PC clients. When seen from a PC all the Mac's dot files are visible which is confusing to the average user. Anybody know a way to conceal these files from a PC? Samba has a "Hide Dot Files Option" but I don't see an equivalent option here.
    Thanks,

    How are the PC (Windows?) and Mac clients connecting to the NW6.5 server? NCP or CIFS for Windows? AFP or CIFS for Macs?
    I'm not aware of a server-side setting that would help here so I'll ask how Windows Explorer is configured on the Windows clients.
    By default it is set to not show system and hidden files which I think also covers the dot files.

  • .dot Files and Adobe RoboHelp 9 for HTML

    I have a problem that I have been discussing with Adobe Technical Support for over a month now and I do not seem to be getting anywhere with them.
    The problem is this, I have a large help system that I have authored under RoboHelp 8 and Windows XP. In it I have 8 Single Source Layouts, 4 that generate HTML Web Help and 4 that generate Printed Documentation.
    When I used RoboHelp 8 it generated the printed documentation using Word 2007. My company recently upgraded all of our systems to Windows 7 and Office 2010 (64-bit) and when they did that I found out that RoboHelp 8 was incompatible with Word 2010, so I called up Adobe and they suggested I upgrade to RoboHelp 9, which I did. I now have Robohelp Version 9.02 on my new machine. Unfortunately, my RoboHelp project still does not generate all of the printed documentation the way I want it to.
    Initially, 3 out of the 4 Single Source Layouts generated printed documentation fine, but the fourth one actually caused a crash in Word 2010 and I received the complilation error from RoboHelp 9 that said "failed to generate Filename.docx" or something like that. I called Adobe Technical Support and they had me uninstall Office 2010 (64-bit) and install Office 2010 (32-bit). That solved the crashing problem, but the specific single source layout that caused the problem still doesn't generate the printed documentation correctly. There are missing pages and pages in incorrect order and ghost pages that I don't even expect to be there.
    The Support Desk person feels, and I believe he is correct, that it has to to with the template file that I am using. That template file is pretty complicated, involving macros and fancy styles. I did not create the .dot file myself, I came to the project after someone else had already done it, so I am not that familiar with how the template file was created. Moreover, the Adobe Technical support fellow also seems not to know much about Word template files, so at this point we are sort of at an impasse, where he is claiming that the problem lies in my .dot file, and I am claiming that even if that is the case, RoboHelp should work with all .dot files, and moreover, why does my template file work with 3 out of 4 of my single source layouts?
    Anyway, we need to break this impasse somehow, does anyone out there have any helpful suggestions?

    I think you are misunderstanding how the forum works. You say "your developers." Nearly all posts here are handled by users of the product, such as myself. Adobe staff do drop in from time to time and we always welcome their intimate product knowledge.
    Anything you regard as a bug or needing a feature change needs to be fed direct to Adobe.

    Then:
    killall Finder

    how to hide the file name (the bizarre number assigned by the camera) when exporting an image version in aperture from an album. Pl understand I want to keep the file name in the project library version.

    Within Aperture you have Images, which are constructed on-the-fly from two files (the Master and the Version).  You get an image-format file _only_ when you export an Image.  You select the file name (usually a scheme) when you create an image-format file (that is, when you export).  Look under "Aperture→Presets→File Naming" for built-in Presets.  You can, of course, create your own or customize any provided.
    The Preset is applied to only the file newly created by your "export" command.  It is not applied to the Image in Aperture (unless you rename your Versions or your Masters).

    Is there a way to hide eml file attachments in Convergence? It already displays the contents of the eml inline so there is no need for the attachement
    Also, in Communications Express it currently does this

    eolair wrote:

    a) Create <app_server_base>/domains/domain1/docroot/iwc_static/c11n/allDomain/js/widget/MailMessageViewer.js containing:
    dojo.provide("c11n.allDomain.js.widget.MailMessageViewer");
    dojo.require("iwc.widget.MailMessageViewer");
    dojo.declare("iwc.widget.MailMessageViewer", iwc.widget.MailMessageViewer, {
            _renderAttachments: function() {
                    console.debug("c11n: Stop message/rfc822 attachments from showing in the attachment pane");
                    var attachments=this._msg.getAttachments(true);
                    if(attachments.length == 0) {
                            return '';
                    dojo.forEach(attachments, function(a) {
                            if(a._notDisplayed) {
                                    return;
                            // Stop message/rfc822 MIME type attachments from displaying in the attachment pane
                            if (!a._notDownloadable && (a.getType() + "/" + a.getSubtype() != "message/rfc822")) {
                                    var w = new iwc.widget.MailAttachment({
                                            part: a,
                                            truncateFileNames: this.truncateFileNames,
                                            isInPrintMode: this.isInPrintMode
                                    this.attachmentList.appendChild(w.domNode);
                                    this._attachmentWidgets.push(w);
                    }, this);
                    dojo.toggleClass(this.attachmentPane, 'iwcHide', (this._attachmentWidgets.length == 0));
            last: ""
    });b) Add the following line to customize.js to apply the above customisation:
    // Stop message/rfc822 attachments from showing in the attachment pane
    dojo.require("c11n.allDomain.js.widget.MailMessageViewer");c) Clear the browser cache, and log into Convergence.
    You can see the original "_renderAttachments" function which the above code replaces in <app_server_base>/domains/domain1/docroot/iwc_static/js/debug/iwc/widget/MailMessageViewer.js

  • An URL link to a ".dot" file doesn't start MS-word.

    When a page has a link to file with suffix ".dot" I expect that the file is being opened with MS-office (WORD) , Just like IE.
    Instead of that the contetnt of the dot file is presented in firefox itself.
    I have searched for a way to change the behaviour of firefox but didn't find the solution.

    Dear Rave,
    Thank you for your reply.
    Yes, I tried several times and got the same results.
    Does it have anything to do with the Options/Applications used in Firefox?

  • How to Hide "Hidden Files"??

    This is a question that has stumped AppleCare when I called them last week, and the "Geniuses" at my local AppleStore yesterday....So, throwing it out here. On upgrading my new 17" MBP last week to Snow Leopard I discovered the Finder was showing a lot of System files that normally are "hidden". IE: bin, cores, etc, mack kernal, tmp, usr, var. The regular way of dealing with these files is to make them "hidden" with a Terminal command, but that didn't work. I reinstalled Snow Leopard twice, that didn't work, the Genuis applied a Widget to hide the files, that didn't work either. Somehow the Snow Leopard installation has labelled these files as visible and will not allow Terminal to re-label them so that they go back to their proper "hidden" state.
    I cannot with Snow Leopard find a way to "Archive and Reinstall" so that I could sort of shove aside the troubled system and put another clean one in place like we could with Leopard and previous OSX installations. So does anyone have any ideas what may have happened here and how I can address it without the painful solution of wiping the HD and reinstalling and re-registering everything like Photoshop, FCP, Lightroom, Aperture and a host of other software? Something I am trying to avoid. Thanks............

  • How to hide raw files

    Hi All,
    I have a Nikon D70s and shoot in both raw and jpg. When I upload to iPhoto 08, it uploads both .nef and .jpg files, which is fine, and then displays both photos. I want to be able to hide the .nef files until I need them. Is there a global setting that will automatically hide .nef files?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There is no universal setting to hide any kind of file. But you could create a smart album based on the criteria Photo is RAW. It will display all of the raw photos in the library and make it easy to hide them en mass.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How to open dot-files as doc?

    Hello there,
    we have several company word-templates (extension dot) and we´re planing to access these templates via the Portal (file system repository with connect to the server).
    If I doubleclick the dot-file in the windows explorer, I receive a doc-file from the template.
    If I click a dot-file inside the Portal via Repository, I receive a dot-file - but that´s wrong. Our Macros don´t work anymore and and and.
    So has anybody experience with this problem? How can I open a dot-file as a doc-file inside the Portal?
    Thanks a lot,
    Susanne

    Hi Susanne,
    the problem would be, that from the portal site, you will not have a lot of possibilies to handle this issue. Technically MS Office is responsible for opening .dot files. The portal is just sending the stream to the client (browser) which starts the required application, which has to handle the data. So its a kind of application logic (from MS Office) to transform .dot into .doc files.
    Regards,
    Thilo

  • Making Finder display 'hidden' files i.e. dot-files

    Is it possible to have Finder display (hidden) dot-files? (This used to be possible via a Preference in 'Step so one wonders why the OS X people actually eliminated this extremely useful feature.) If you have to go to the Terminal and do cp and mv, it defeats the purpose of Finder. (Consider that Smith Micro's excellent faxing utility keeps all faxes inside a 'dot-folder'.) Surely there is a crypto dwrite?

    'defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1' does it -- that's what I was looking for. Also, no need to mess with Script Editor or stop/start Finder: simply write the 'dwrite' on the command-line (i.e. in a Terminal window) and then, due to the lack of Update/Refresh in Finder (which was available in 'Step), click a couple of times on a folder or two in a Finder window to force a refresh. And the job's done. (And, as the respondent said, to turn it off, write the 'dwrite' again with a trailing 0.)

  • Hide Sidecar files appearing after upgrade?

    How do you hide Sidecar files NOW appearing in NEF photo folder on desktop after Yosemite upgrade? In Adobe Bridge, you have option to hide sidecar files. Can't find a way to hide them from view in OS Finder folders.

    Oh, good idea!
    Changing it in explorer is forcing a rewrite of the tags, enough so that itunes can now recognize them.
    Did you ever have a window 7 beta (build 7000) looking at those files? That version had some problems that affected MP3s.
    It sounds similar to a wide-spread issue where itunes will not read tags that other programs will read.
    Your situation has a different twist, in that they were all originally ripped with itunes.
    Anyhoo....they have somehow gotten corrupted, either from itunes or something else. I don't know what you have on your PC and what is common among those 700 songs that got hit.
    I can't think of anything at the moment that will rewrite all the tags quickly, except for MP3 validator - but I wouldn't want to use that on my library, because it takes the tags back to v1 and loses artwork.

  • Is there a way to hide ALL file extensions?

    Hi
    I am looking for a way to get OS X to hide ALL file extensions on the entire computer. I don't know why, but they really annoy me! I liked OS 9 and earlier because they didn't have them, and including them in OS X seems like a step backward to me. Wherever I can I simply don't save with file extensions (MS Office still retains this ability), and most applications will still open their files if you delete the file extension, but I do have a number of applications that require a file extension (such as OmniGraffle Pro), and it is very laborious to have to go through every file in order to hide the file extension. Is there some kind of master setting that you can apply to a volume in order to hide every file extension in it?

    Hi All,
    I have found this tutorial that partially solves the problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NhRFxJCAQw
    It is a quick way to hide the extensions of all files that have them in a given folder and the folders inside it, using automator. It does not hide the extensions of any file you add to the folder subsequently, and you can not apply it to a volume or a home folder. It is more of a labour-saving tool than an actual solution, but it is vastly better than having to get info for every single file.
    As the author of the tutorial notes in his video, this is an option that apple could fix by just adding one more check-box to the finder preferences window. Or better still they could have just left things the way they were before and not introduced them in the first place... does anyone even know what they are for anyway? (Apart from to annoy you with a random bit of text at the end of a filename that you didn't place there.)

  • Re. Moving invisible dot file into limbo

    I decided to move out a .vbt5 file from the root folder to the Desktop. (The .vbt5 was a remnant of a Virus Barrier installation -- how it got there is another story, since I never installed anything Intego. Must have been migrated from an inherited Leopard G5. Nothing else Intego is showing anywhere. Just that.)
    (I know I could have just moved the .vbt5 to the Trash using the Finder, which is what I eventually did, in fact. But I wanted to preserve it somewhere.)
    Here's what happened:
    First made all files visible from Terminal. Then
    sudo cp -p /.vbt5 ~/Desktop    (My intent here was to put a copy on the Desktop, then trash the origiinal at root.)
    Result: didn't see a copy on the Desktop. Original is still in the root folder. Remember, all hidden files/folders are visible.
    Next
    sudo mv /.vbt5 ~/Desktop
    Still nada and EasyFind set to show all invisible doesn't see it anywhere, not even in the root folder, so that part worked. It appears to have disappeared into thin air, but it went somewhere.
    So, next decide to move it back to the root folder from wherever, even though it never showed up on the Desktop and EF doesn't see it anywhere.
    sudo mv ~/Desktop/.vbt5 /
    Guess what. With this last command, it shows up back in the root folder. Question: where was it before I moved it back. Why, with hidden files/folders showing, didn't it show up on the Desktop when I moved it there? It was nowhere to be seen, but it obediently went back to the root folder when I moved it back there.
    Obviously, something I'm not understanding about the behavior of hidden dot files.

    OK, I think I may have this figured out. For security, I'm running standard. So in order to sudo I have to su to my admin user. If I ls -a from my admin, it shows up. If I ls -a from my standard user, it doesn't show. Finder isn't seeing it because it's only seeing my standard user. That was the giveaway. I'm guessing it's getting moved to my admin user Desktop. Don't at the moment feel like logging in over there to confirm this, but I'm pretty certain this is what's happening.
    One of a number of small PITA of running standard and having to su to do certain things.
    Thanks, your involvement was helpful and got me started on the right track.
