Hide files, password protect?

i was wondering if there was anyway to hide files on a mac or put a password on them so i have to use that password everytime i open that fIle.
hiding a nd un hiding files was super easy in windows. but i have no idea in mac.

gray_bry,
or put a password on them so i have to use that password everytime i open that fIle.
You could place the file(s) inside an Encrypted Disk Image which requires a password to open, and allows you move files to or from an encrypted disk image as easily as you can from a regular folder.
"By default, the password is stored in your login keychain when you create an encrypted disk image."
If you want total control of this disk image, "Do Not" add the password to keychain. That way a password must be entered every time that you attempt to open the Disk Image. Just be sure to remember the password or your data will be reduced to a jumble of 1's and 0's forever.

  • Finder making ZIP file password protected on Windows

    Here's an odd one. Someone (on OS X.5.7) makes an archive (ZIP) of a folder and gives the same file to two people, one on XP and one on Leopard (10.5.8).
    The Leopard user can open the zip file no problem. The XP user has a password prompt, and can't extract or copy the files out of the ZIP file without the password. But no password was set and nobody can guess what the password might be.
    Anybody see anything like this while making ZIPs from Leopard?

    I am having the same problem, occasionally and randomly.
    It seems to be problem with XP and not Vista.
    The standard advice is to right click the zip in Windows, then properties, then "unblock", but this doesn't work in the case of my most recent problem zip.
    I have tried zipping todays problem folder with Finder, FileChute and Betterzip, and none of them will open in XP, but all will in Vista.
    Note that XP will open the zip and show the jpegs, but the jpegs will not open.
    Really would appreciate some help on this.

  • Album's hide feature must be password protected

    Hide feature of album must be password protected.. As currently via navigating to the hidden folder its very easy to retrieve & view the hidden images..
    or either the hidden folder be password protected.. To view the content the user must enter the password first..

    It wasn't designed for a 2nd user to start going through user files and enabling show hidden files and folders - It was designed and brought to us as a feature by request - The reason is members or owners didn't want to show friends etc photo's and then accidently show photo's that are private - If you really want to hide and password protect folders then use a Pc with winrar and password protect them that way

  • How do I keep a Pages 09 password protected file in iCloud?

    After uploading a Pages 09 password protected file from my laptop it shows as a page with the Pages 09 icon in the center (no visible text) in iCloud.  So far so good.  But once I open that doc using my iPhone, a task that as expected requieres entering the password, the protection seems to disapear and the file gets saved without the protection right in iCloud. The icon for the document changes from the Pages icon I described above to the text of the first page, just as a regular file, and if I try to open it back again entering the password is not requiered!
    How do I keep the file password protected?
    Thanks.  Ale

    Files stored in iCloud are stored locally as well as on some remote Apple server - just not on the desktop. You cannot keep the file on the desktop but you should be able to locate it in your Mobile Documents folder, make an alias, and put the alias on your desktop.
    The Mobile Documents folder is in your Library folder (hold option while selecting the Go menu in the Finder) and your Numbers documents are located in com~apple~Numbers

  • Password-protecting a hyperlink to a file?

    Is it possible to make a hyperlink to a file password-protected in iWeb 3.0.3? For example, I'd like to make a portfolio on my website downloadable only to select clients. Thanks.

    Since iWeb can’t password-protect individual pages, consider posting your portfolio on posterous.com and text or image hyperlink to it. There's also a way to link to an external site (such as Posterous) directly from iWeb's navigation bar.
    You can set a password on your Posterous site so only the readers you want can see it. They don't need to create an account to see your site, just enter the password you give them. Simple. More information about private sites can be found HERE.

  • Password Protected Word Files

    My Nokia Lumia 510 with Windows 7 will not allow me to open my OneDrive Password Protected Word files. It always gives me the message “Password-protected files can’t be opened”.
    I really prefer to have all my files password protected so in order to resolve this I am considering purchasing a Lumia 630 which has Windows 8.1. Obviously I don’t want to waste money buying this model if I still can’t open my OneDrive Word files. Is anyone able to tell me whether this will resolve the problem or alternatively suggest which model I should purchase? Many thanks. Suzie
    Solved!

    Yes.. On NL 630 you will be able to do that ..

  • Open Password Protection

    If I create a "Full Text Index..." on a group of pdf's and then go back and set open password protection on one or more of the files and try and search from the indexed file password protected file(s) are not accessable.
    The links to these open password protected files linked and opened in version 7 but no longer do with Acrobat 9 or X, on OS X or Windows.
    Any suggestions?

    Emac1 -
    Open firmware password protection is something to keep the honest person honest but it won't stop someone with a little knowledge and physical access to the inside of the computer. There's also that slight inconvenience when you want to boot off an install disk (to run Disk Utility), or boot into open firmware or single user mode.
    Removal of RAM to zap the PRAM is a commonly discussed method of defeating the open firmware password protection.
    For real protection of your documents, consider inserting sensitive files in an encrypted disk image, just don't forget the password, I've never heard of a hack to defeat and encrypted disk image.

  • Password protect an iBot attachment

    Hello
    I have a requirement to distribute a report from Answers via an iBot but have the PDF produced password protected by a specific password. Has anybody any ideas on how this can be achieved? I know it can be done through Publisher but the preference is not to maintain an Answers and a Publisher version of the report.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dom.

    Dom,
    There's a PHP library http://www.idsecuritysuite.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/fpdi.zip that allows you to password protect PDF file
    Function would look like this (i took it from the web):
    <?php
    function pdfEncrypt ($origFile, $password, $destFile){
    //include the FPDI protection http://www.setasign.de/products/pdf-php-solutions/fpdi-protection-128/
    require_once(’fpdi/FPDI_Protection.php’);
    $pdf =& new FPDI_Protection();
    // set the format of the destinaton file, in our case 6×9 inch
    $pdf->FPDF(’P', ‘in’, array(’6′,’9′));
    //calculate the number of pages from the original document
    $pagecount = $pdf->setSourceFile($origFile);
    // copy all pages from the old unprotected pdf in the new one
    for ($loop = 1; $loop <= $pagecount; $loop++) {
    $tplidx = $pdf->importPage($loop);
    $pdf->addPage();
    $pdf->useTemplate($tplidx);
    // protect the new pdf file, and allow no printing, copy etc and leave only reading allowed
    $pdf->SetProtection(array(), $password, ”;
    $pdf->Output($destFile, ‘F’);
    return $destFile;
    //password for the pdf file (I suggest using the email adress of the purchaser)
    $password = “[email protected]”;
    //name of the original file (unprotected)
    $origFile = “book.pdf”;
    //name of the destination file (password protected and printing rights removed)
    $destFile =“book_protected.pdf”;
    //encrypt the book and create the protected file
    pdfEncrypt($origFile, $password, $destFile );
    ?>You could invoke this process with advanced settings of your Ibot....or you could find/program a custom Java program that would do this...good luck

  • DELETING FILES PERMAMNENTLY FROM HARD DRIVE AND PASSWORD PROTECTING

    DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO PERMANENTLY DELETE FILES FROM THE HARD DRIVE? ALSO, WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO ADD A PASSWORD TO A FOLDER?
    THANKS!

    #1) Please check your caps lock key which seems to be on and many perceive as shouting your questions.
    #2) Use secure empty trash when you want secure deleting.
    #3) There isn't a folder password feature. There's a utility which will let you hide folders with a password, but that is easily circumvented. Then there's making password protected, encrypted image files. The second is very secure but it isn't a folder, it appears as a new volume on your desktop.

  • Acrobat 8.1 and C# - How can you detect password protected PDF files?

    I am modifying our existing C# code that opens PDF files.  But when ever we hit a password protected file, we are prompted for a password.  This is an automated process, so if we detect a password protected file, we move the file to a manual processing folder to be processed later.
    We are using Acrobat 8.1 Standard.
    Our code looks like this:
    using
    System;
    using
    System.Collections.Generic;
    using
    System.Linq;
    using
    System.Text;
    using
    Acrobat;
    using
    System.IO;
    using
    Word = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word;
    using
    System.Reflection;
         AcroApp app = new AcroApp();     app.Hide();
         try
              if (app != null)          {
                   app.CloseAllDocs();
                   AcroAVDoc av = new AcroAVDoc();
                   if (av.Open(filename, "Test") == true)               {
                        AcroPDDoc doc = new AcroPDDoc();                    doc = (
    AcroPDDoc)av.GetPDDoc();
                        doc.Save((
    short)Acrobat.PDSaveFlags.PDSaveFull,
                        Utilities.GeneratePath(FileVersion.TEMP) + fi.Name.RemoveFileExtension() + ".PDF");                    doc.Close();
         catch (Exception ex)     {
              ErrorLog.LogError(filename.RemoveFileExtension(), ex);     }
         finally
              app.CloseAllDocs();
              app.Exit();
    This works great for non-password protected PDF files, but it prompts for a password if the file is password protected.  I was looking at the FileOpenEX functionality, but I can not find the reference to bring into my C# project.  It looks like it is only for C++, since I could only find C++ examples.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    There are no methods in the Acrobat SDK for C# for what you wish to accomplish.

  • Password protecting a Zip file in windows 7

    So I am trying to figure out how to password protect a zip file using the built in zipping utility in windows 7.  In windows xp and vista once you have created a zipped file you open the file and select file>add password.
    In windows 7 (currently using pro) there is no "add password" option, anyone have any idea why this is?  Or is there some other way of adding a password to a windows zip file that I am not aware of?  Am I being forced to add a 3rd party
    zip app in order to password protect files?
    if so my other question is why would such a simple/convenient feature be removed from an operating system that is suppose to be superior then the previous?

    According to the Windows 7 Help file there is no such capability in windows 7:
    Can I protect files or folders with a password?
    No, you can't use a password to protect files and folders in
    Windows. However, some programs that run on Windows allow you to protect individual files with a password. For more information, check the Help for the program you're using.
    There are other ways to protect your files and folders in Windows. You can
    encrypt your files using Encrypting File System (EFS), manually specify who can access the folders or files by setting permissions, or hide them. Choose your method based on how secure the folders or files need to be.
    Encrypting is the most secure, while hiding the folders is the least secure.
    For more information about EFS, see What is Encrypting File System (EFS)? For more information about permissions, see
    What are permissions?

  • I can no longer access a password protected Numbers file with the correct password. Error message only says the file "cannot be opened."

    I'm using Numbers version 3.2.2.
    Suddenly I cannot access my password protected Numbers file with the correct password. I have the correct password written down so I know I haven't made a mistake.
    The response box that pops up says that the file cannot be opened. There are no other options for me to choose from.

    Also, I tried to open it through an older version of Numbers but it sent this error message.

    Now i am able to create PDF with Digital signature. But We want to assign password protection too..and problem is once we fix Digital signature we can't change security.
    My problem is to pass password at the time of opening PDF for embedding signature. Password window should not prompt to the user while running VBA application.
    Can you please help me to pass password on fly when file prompt password while opening PDF file. As file need to be opened at the time of fixing signature using sdk javascript code.

    Correct, you need to encrypt then sign.
    Unfortunately, there is no way to pass a password for opening.

  • How can I set up SMB file sharing to share my PC external hard drive on my Mac with no password protection?

    I am having the worst trouble with two things. I am very aware how to get the server to show up via SMB, but every time I log off the Macbook, the server's disappear. OK, so I went into "System Preferences" and hit "Users and Accounts" and added the server as a log in item. Worked well, except how do I stop that password prompt from coming up? I am using a Guest account with no password but I continue to get the password prompt. There is nowhere to hit remember password or anything. I have the option to remember the password in the keychain but I have no way of preventing the pop up.
    Another issue I'm having is I have a Canon Pixma MP620 printer connected to my PC through USB. Three other PC's can connect wirelessly to print through the home network. My Mac does not find the printer, and when I manually add it, it recognizes it but WILL NOT print. It comes up with error messages like Authentican Required and connection issues between printers.
    I have no password protection on my PC and have enabled sharing of all devices and folders through the Homegroup on the PC. I just can't figure it out. I am new to Mac and would love to get these two things figured out.
    Thanks in advance for reading!

    Hi Bengt, Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
    I have a WD 1TIG hard drive and are using usb connection, is it possible to use fire wire with these? I have had trouble with a lot of the videos I Imported, once they downloaded the file in the viewer window showed up blank and when I mouse over them it places a picture of another file in the window and wont drag and drop into the movie window, like their corrupted or something? Had to delete just about all of them and start again. Also is it possible to select a bunch of videos in the viewer window as to change the dates to the correct dates? All I have been able to do is "select all" which is no help.
