High Expectations!

This is what I thought FCP X would look like:
Source Monitor
Tracks with lights
Projects with customizable bins
Bin info in list view (no thumbnails - or dates!)
Plus, scratch disk and media management
Hopefully, my mock-up will soon become reality.

  • Slow Render with High-End System?

Im currently working on a (in my opinion) high-end Windows system for video editing. The system is about 2 years old and has cost a fortune in that time. So Im expecting significantly better speed. So heres my problem:
Im working primarly in Premiere Pro and After Effects. All the media I work with are as a video imported Jpeg Sequences. Often I have multiple Sequences (up to 7 or 8) overlayed and tweaked with Dissolves and plugins like Twixtor. I also use the Adobe Dynamic Link from After Effects to Premiere and vice versa. All the footage is currently in 1080p but in future I will want to render 4K. Im aware that a 4K workflow is probably a pain in the *** so Im surely going to edit offline with 1080p. However  I cant get any real-time playback with all my sequences. I ALWAYS have to render a preview to watch my edits. I dont know if Im just having too high expectations for my system, but Im kinda sure there has to be an issue for this lack of performance. Maybe the Dynamic Link is slowing my system down?

    Valentin,
I have always called a raid10 a solution for the paranoid in a hurry. It takes 4 drives to give you the capacity and performance of two disks, but gives you security by the mirroring.
Before going into your specific situation, allow me to tell something about volumes and drives, because they can be confusing and at the same time they are very important for optimal performance of a system.
Single disk, not partitioned is 1 disk = 1 volume to the OS
Single disk, partitioned is 1 disk = multiple volumes (not a good idea BTW)
Multiple disks in one raid array is Many disks = 1 volume
Multiple disks in one raid array with partitions is Many disks = multiple volumes (not a good idea either)
Each volume has a distinct drive letter for access.
Partitioning is a thing of the past and should not be used at all on modern systems.
You have to think about volumes more than about number of disks. In my current system I have 27 different physical disks but only 4 volumes. In the old one I have 17 disks and 5 volumes.
Now that we are clear what we are talking about, volumes with distinct drive letters, we can address your situation.
You have TWO volumes, C: (single disk) and D: (4 disks in raid10). Spreading the load across two volumes is more demanding and gives slower performance than using more volume, unless one or more volumes are very fast, as I tried to explain in a previous reply (remember Isenfluh/Sulwald?). If you add a SSD as you intend, you have increased the number of volumes to 3, which will definitely help performance, because SSD's are faster than conventional disks, the pagefile can be stored on the SSD, so all your performance will go up.
Compare your setup with mine with rough estimated figures:
    Volume
    Valentin
    Harm
    Transfer rate Valentin
    Tranfer rate Harm
    C:
    1 HDD
    1 SSD
    125 MB/s
    450 MB/s
    D:
    4x Raid10
    1 SSD
    250 MB/s
    450 MB/s
    E:
    NA
    21x Raid30
    NA
    2,700 MB/s
    F:
    NA
    1 HDD
    NA
    150 MB/s
These figures are indicative, but do show where the major differences are. In my experience disk setup is overlooked quite often, but has a huge impact on a system's responsiveness. It is the weakest (slowest) link in the chain, afterall and with your workflow, doubly so.
But in your specific case there is something else, and that is your disappointing hardware MPE score. 100 seconds is extremely slow, even for a Quadro 4000. I would be quite normal to see a score around 8 - 9 seconds on such a system, well maybe around 12 - 13 seconds with your ECC memory, but 100 is way too slow. Some background services or processes are interfering with the hand-over from memory-GPU-VRAM-GPU-memory. This can be caused by a myriad of things, but a good starting point would be the BlackViper list of services to set to manual or disabled and taking a closer look at the processes running with Process Explorer. There should normally be less than 50 processes running.
    Hope this helps.

  • For Users of WRT350N - My experience

For all you WRT350N Users out there, I thought I'd post my experience and tips gained over the past 7-8 months using the WRT350N since my WRT54G died.
I purchased the WRT350N obviously as a replacement for the WRT54G with extremely high expectations. Though I did not have any -N equipment as yet, I was planning on it. I did like the fact that it had the USB port. It was also a Linksys product so I expected the same good, reliable experience with it as I had in the past. I was upgrading some of my home office equipment and wanted to embrace wireless for all my peripherals (ie. get rid of the wires).
In the beginning, it was hell.
I suffered from all kinds of bizarre and cryptic events. The WRT350N was at 1.03.2. I had all manners of dropped internet connections, extremely poor wireless performance (WEP and B/G Mode). You've read the threads, I've experienced them all. I almost threw the unit out in total frustration. I upgraded to 1.03.7 about a month after purchase following the procedure outlined by other contributors on this forum...(You must follow the instructions to the letter).
Since then, the unit has worked as advertised in wired modes: internet connection has been solid and stable with no re-boots. The wireless piece has been a bugger running WEP and in B or G... still had 54MB/s when close to the WRT350N but this dropped considerably when the wireless device was moved to other parts of the house.
Well, I fixed the problem... and wireless piece is now running at 270MB/s (-N Mode) flawlessly throughout my house. See below.
So, what have I learned and is it of any use to anyone else?
First off, everyone's configurations, equipment, environment, needs and expectations are different, so take the following with a grain of salt. This is my experience.
    My Network and stuff:
    Cable Broadband - Cable modem
DellXPS-3.4Ghz (Desktop), 1 TeraByte drives configured for RAID 0, 1 GB Network card, lot's of USB devices hanging off it - everything running on MS XP - System is wired to the WRT350N.
Dell8100-1.5Ghz (Desktop), 500GB Drives, 1GB Network card and a bunch of peripherals - everything running on MS XP - System is wired to the WRT350N.
1 Terabyte USB External Drive used primarily for backups. Originally purchased to hang off the USB port of the WRT350N as a quasi-network drive... It can be configured and it does work. However, I had trouble with Norton Ghost 12 doing backups to the drive via the 350N USB port. I removed it from the 350N USB port and re-attached it to a spare DELL XPS USB port - no problems since. I also have a number of printers, three of which are directly connected to the Desktops.
I purchased a HP Photosmart C8180 All-in-one (good unit BTW) as a network (wired or wireless) color printer and for photo printing etc. It worked intermittently with the 350N when configured for wireless using WEP and in B/G mode. The printer, unfortunately does not support wireless in -N mode using WPA2 Personal-AES. So it is now wired with network connection at 1 GB.
Dell Latitude D600 Laptop... Frustrating!!! With the on-board Intel Wireless B/G, I never really got consistent, solid network or Internet connections via the 350N. It worked poorly with the 350N - wireless. It worked fine wired to the 350N.
Solution: I disabled the on-board Intel Wireless and purchased a Linksys WPC300N - It is a -N device. I really crossed my fingers with this purchase. Well, the card works. I get solid, repeatable wireless connection to the Network/Internet anywhere in the house at 270MB/s. I have had absolutely no interference from any of my neighbor's B and G routers. I have yet to experience any degradation in speed or signal. Use: WPA2 Personal-AES for security. Faster than all the other settings I've tried.
So the 350N works in my case, as advertised. My first -N appliance - the WPC300N card for the Dell laptop also works as advertised. I haven't hooked up XBox or fully utilized/explored all the other features nor have I set up the router for VPN (one step at a time).
So here's what I have in the configuration:
Under SETUP/Basic Setup: Internet Connection Type: Automatic configuration - DHCP
DHCP Server: Enabled - Use DHCP Reservation and assign your devices (MAC Addresses) to IPs
Under SETUP/MAC Address Clone: Enable. My DELL XPS MAC is cloned here (Must do)
    Under SETUP/Advanced Routing:NAT Enabled
    Under Wireless/Basic Wireless Settings:
    Network Mode: Mixed (b/g/n)
Network Name (SSID): Put your SSID here (anything other that linksys!) Radio Band: Wide - 40MHz Channel
    Wide Channel: 3
    Standard Channel: 1 - 2.412GHz
    SSID Broadcast: Enabled
I've experimented with the Auto settings here... it works but I got better results in my case with the above.
Under Wireless/Wireless Security: Security Mode: WPA2 Personal
    Encryption: AES
Passphrase: I put a name in here
Key Renewal: The default I believe is 3600 (works). I put in 7200 (works)
Under Wireless/Wireless MAC Filter: (Kind of up to you. For added security, I enabled it and put in my Laptop and other wireless devices MAC addresses here.
    Wireless MAC Filter: Enabled
Access Restriction : Permit PCs listed below to access the wireless network.
MAC Address Filter List : Fill out your applicable MAC addresses here. Under Wireless/Advanced Wireless Settings: AP Isolation: Disabled
    Frame Burst: Enabled
    Authentication Type: (Default: Auto)
    Basic Rate: (Default: Default)
    Transmission Rate: (Default: Auto)
    N Transmission Rate: (Default: Auto)
    CTS Protection Mode: (Default: Auto)
    Beacon Interval: 50
    DTIM Interval: 1
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2307
    RTS Threshold: 2306
    Under Security/Firewall:
Firewall-SPI Firewall Protection: Enabled Everything else - default
Under Storage: I had this configured to handle my USB Terabyte drive but since decoupled it for other reasons. It works and has worked as a Network drive in my case.
Under Access Restrictions: I left everything default here.
Under Applications and Gaming: I have done nothing here. Can't advise on port forwarding or the like.
Under Administration: Everything here is vanilla except under Management I have enabled Upnp.
    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers!

My WRT350N has given me very little trouble, however the storage link does not work that great. I definitly like the WRT350 router over my old WRT300. Thanks for the tips and info. I just wished that LInksys came out with firmware updates for there products more often that fixed bugs.

  • I just purchased the mid 2013 MacBook Air with the 1.7 GHz Processor.

I was making a disk image using disk utility, and it was scolding hot. I checked activity monitor and it was using only about 30-50% of the processor and my fan was ramped up to full RPM...I shutter at the though of using more than 50% of the processor. Is this normal? Did I just have higher expectations of it than i should have? Are you just simply not able to use the Haswell processor like at all? For your info, i was making an image a hard drive partition to move it to another hard drive. It was only connected to one hard drive...Any one experiencing something similar or have any idea if this should be happening?

Maybe so, but when I am using it on the web and doing normal light tasks the temp stays around 95-130 depending on if I'm using plug-ins or not which is exactly what I would expect and have gotten with my other machines. So I don't think it would be wildly inaccurate at the upper end of the temp scale. (Not saying that is not possible, but I would think its unlikely). Thanks though for your input, I guess I will wait untill it breaks or Apple says "oops" and does a REP. It seems to handle a heavy load well now that I have had a chance to play with it more. It still gets like 205, but even using near 100% CPU or playing games it never gets any hotter.

  • Internet very slow after changing my previous airport extreme to my new 2T TC

    Hi,
I just got a new 2T time capsule to replace my Airpot Extreme that worked fine. After installing it I chose to import a previous wifi network to the new TC and my internet became very slow. I read a few online documents sugesting that the internet slows down when backing up large data, but I dont think it is backing up (I did a force quit on systems preferences that "froze" with the cursor becoming a spinning ball) and after that tryed to restart my mac pro, but it has been recovering space from file vault for 2 hours. I am trying to access the internet from my mac air, but the speed is 10% of what I usually get.
Any suggestions? Starting to regret getting the TC, I had high expectations about it.
    Thanks
    Rubens

    Thanks William.
I got help from Apple by phone and aparrently after importing the old airport extreme configurations, my time capsule ended with wrong "Radio channel selection" and after changing the 2.4Ghz to 9 and the 5Hhz to 157 the internet connection is back to normal. thanks

  • PSCS3 Extended - a let down

I purchased PSCS3 Extended because it looked like it would really be great.
I'm an architect and I was really looking forward to the measurement tool... I have to measure things off of job site pics all the time.
I have to say the measurement tool in PSCS3 Extended is deeply disappointing... it's so primitive feeling and basically kinda useless.
I should be able to more easily display change the way the measurements are given... if I want it in inches it's kind of awkward the way it currently works.
I should be able to highlight an area with the marquee tool and have it tell me the area quickly... it's just really not what I was hoping for. If the developers of Pshop are listening... please get this up to the level I've come to expect from Pshop - I've been using Photoshop since 1990... after 18 years I still don't have an easy way to measure something in a picture. :? What are you guys doing?
Also, I do some web work, and want to edit .gifs
I SIMPLY CANNOT BELIEVE THAT PSCS3 CANNOT HELP ME EDIT ANIMATED GIFS!?!!? COME ON!!!! PLEASE!!! I can now open an .mov file... and edit THAT... but NOT AN ANIMATED GIF?! PSCS3 costs HOW MUCH?!
So I found an absolutely free program on the web that basically makes PSCS3 look like a joke when it comes to editing animated .gifs... this is to Adobe's shame.
Hope you guys can fix this in the next version.
I used to tell everyone... "the only progam I work in that is near perfect is Photoshop" well... someone's let me down this time around... deeply.
Lastly, your forums are a mess, and also very primitive. Has Adobe become so big now that it's becoming clumsy and obsolete?
I have VERY high expectations from you...

    > typing a > and copy/pasting someone's text into the message is not the same thing as a quick quote.
true, but i think it's quicker than looking for a [Quote] button hidden somewhere on a page.
    >where are the instructions to tell me how to do this?
    straight html...
    <img src='http://milbut.org/smilies/rolleyes1.gif'>
    >Do I need to know raw HTML in order to post an image to Adobe forums?
    there ya go! :)
    >nor does the standard (for most forums, anyway) format for url referencing work
no. just post the url. the forum software will automatically take any string starting with http:// to an anchor <A> tag.
it's customary to format a long link with shorter text so not to break the forum formatting.
    <a href="http://somereallylonglink.com">some short text</a>
    >(what happens if you're new to the forum and it's quirks)?
you ask and someone tells you. we were all new here at some time. you come in looking for something then soon find out that questions are asked (by others) and answered here often before you knew you had them. the people here - while they rarely take any shiete from anyone - are real professionals using ps daily in professional markets. nothing beats experiences when you need to learn something or have something explained to you. you hang out for a while, answer a couple of easy questions if and when you can (or not) and bingo, you're learning (if you're not careful! ;))
    >I can not open an already created multilayered animated .gif with pscs3 alone, have it layered, show up in the animated timeline, and edit it easily... or can I?
I know some of the functionality of image ready was lost with cs3 and many of us are pissed off at that, but you should be able to (forgive me i'm not at my ps computer) import it as a movie file (i think), and when it shows file name, type in "*.*" or "*.gif" and the gifs will show in the file open dialog. you should be able to open it from there.
    > One - of many - great things about this forum is the simple fact that the text doesn't extend all across the screen. I've seen people complain about "wasted real estate", but the simple truth is that this makes it much easier on the eye. It's just easier to read.
    that's a great point freeagent!

  • More Feedback: Why I chose Nokia and why it won'...

This is more feedback for Nokia, following up to my previous post.  I would like everyone to share their thoughts too.  I'd like to see Nokia Listen to customers for once.
I bought an E7 due the following:
Unlocked phone = no capped data plan that costs twice as much as the one I had, which is really unlimited.
Full real keyboard--I'm a tactile person--need the keys.
Free Voice Navigation--which I use a lot when traveling for business.
Ability to turn phone into wireless hotspot -- with JoikuSpot Premium. (third party)
Abillity to selectively block/route calls--with Advanced Call Manager.  A must-have app for on-call people. (third party)
PDF Reader -- Nothing better than reading PDFs without my laptop.
Office Suite -- Great for on-the-go editing and viewing.
Zip - Built-in Zip Tool is also a big plus for me.
SIP Client Built-in -- I use this a LOT as a second line when I am not traveling and as a backup line (in case of poor service) when I am traveling.
Nokia Internet Radio -- I use this a lot.  Love having free internet radio available.
FM Radio -- I don't use this much but it's a nice to have.
Lotus Traveler Support -- For my Corporate E-mail.   Too bad IBM discontinued Lotus Mobible Connect (VPN) support for Symbian^3.
    Reasons I almost didn't buy an E7
Battery life -- unlike my prior E71 (which I now regret switching from) the battery life is average.  My E71 would run for a full day of solid use.  I knew going in that it wasn't going to be great battery life--usually a hallmark of E Series--and thought I could live with it.  I can, but I wish the battery life was on-par with previous offerings.
No SD/xD/Any Compact Flash Slot -- Truthfully, I can get by on the 16G in the phone, but if I had the ability to use removeable memory, I'd be able to take movies (as MKV or MP4s), music, etc., as I go.
Battery not removeable--this is a real problem for business users.  Multi-hour conference calls, etc.,  We need to be able to swap batteries.  This was my biggest detractor.
Poor Software options compared to other platforms.  This passed because the phone includes the things I needed/wanted most.
The worst built-in VPN on the planet.  I have a lot of IT infrastructure experience.  Few enterprise class devices as a complex and troublesome to configure as Nokia VPN.  It makes what would be a game-changing feature useless.
Reasons why I will switch to another mobile platform
Build quality increased for other mobile platforms.
Functionality has dramatically increased for other mobile platforms.
Costs are such that I can pay out of pocket for the extra features I want (that Symbian gives for free) and still get a phone for less with better support and available software choices than Nokia provides.
I am not convinced that Symbian will live beyond the next few years--being that I pay out of pocket for phones, I want them to last 3-4 years.  I am not sure that they will now.
Reasons why I will never buy another Nokia Product
You no longer support the US.  You've pretty much given up.  Only a token effort is made.  Carriers don't have your good phones anymore and the ones they did have were crippled beyond belief, damaging/removing/disabling the most appealing features in place of carrier crapware and high prices.
Product Quality has declined.  Nokia has lost marketshare faster than a submarine with a screen door takes on water--which has lead to staffing cuts and you can tell.  The changes between one generation of products is noticeable--what was once superb is now just average to good.
Software Updates--you did fix the most awful thing with prior Symbian Updates--they are no longer destructive.  Fantastic.  I was so happy to get this ability.  But, your lack of scheduling and customer expectation setting is unforgiveable.  Most of us are willing to put up with a reduced experience by you committing to making things better--at some point.  Release dates, especially in the US are a black hole.  All your US customers buy your products outright--usually at a cost of 200-500 dollars each.  Subsidized phones are 0-150 for most carriers.  There is no longer sufficent capability nor quality differences to justify the costs.
Software Setup -- Symbian ^3 is great in general.  But it comes with such insane default settings for home screens and widgets default to online in some releases, which sucks battery life at an unreal pace. The other big complaint is initial navigation.  The default settings make it hard to view even 1/4 the functions available (at least on the E7.) and I cannot figure out why you let product go out the door configured in such a way as the average person will instantly hate the device.
Network and program information notices are for **bleep**.  Applications constantly fight over WiFi and applications asking for confirmations never properly identify themselves.
Finally--Symbian is Dead? Maybe Dead? Will live but be half-heartedly supported?  You have never really said.  It's obvious the focus will be Windows for the foreseeable future, but what about after 2016?  Is symbian 100% gone then?  Is support and service for it going to to continue to decline till then?  Your lack of response and communication on if  you will stand behind the Operating System that made you once the largest mobile provider on the planet is shameful.  It will cost you developers.  It will cost you customers.
    General Symbian Feedback
Why can't you keep market share in the US?  It's simple.  In the US, the average person works 50-60 hours per week.  They also have 2.4 kids.  Those 2.4 kids have at least 5-10 hours of after-school activities per week.  Worst case is the average person spends 90 hours per week outside the home and has virtually no freetime (or sleep) they do not have the skills, inclination, no desire to spend hours customizing Symbian just the way they want it.  They want loads of features, but they want them in one to two clicks/taps.  Beyond that and you've lost the majority of the audience.  If you would simply take the time make an "Initial Setup Wizard" that would let people do dramatic customizations quickly and simply, you could reclaim a lot of the US market with Symbian's loads of features.
US Customers, Please provide similiar feedback.

I had the E6 (after using a SE Xperia X2 for two horrible month's)
It was a "Nokia" , if you understand what I mean .... A brand that stands for quality, a simple Processor, a simple OS, nice specifications. A qwety Phone, like my E5 (which I loved, and I stupidly exchanged for the Xperia)
I had no super performance expectations from it. Just that it was an improved E5 .
And then, by using it, I noticed, no notification-light, very week vibration - insensible (which is essential for my job), SMS were set to search contacts by number and not by name (if so, what's the use of qwerty for????), lame app support - most paid, no sorting option in the music library, no headphone incoming call or SMS tone when listening to music in silent mode (Which the E5 knew), no shutter-sound off-option (although other E6 Handsets, had that option), the USB on the go, could read Folders from the USB only if you used the Default-Nokia Names for Folder, for example Sound's (MP3), Pictures, etc., pinch to zoom was horrible, no software support from Nokia!
After the Xperia X2, I hat so high expectations of Nokia reliability.
My Mom got a 701, it's a much better phone, but also got it's bugs. But I will never return to Nokia.

  • Address Book doesn't sync UP to iCloud, but syncs back down..

(Sorry, Winston, and maybe Roger, I must be developing Alzheimer's ..I just cannot understand how this iCloud system works..)
I've searched through hundreds of queries and answers, but cannot find a similar problem ..but maybe I simply haven't looked hard enough.
Question on behalf of my good lady ..and I've been tearing my hair out over this for WEEKS..
She has 3502 contacts in her Address Book on her OS X Lion 10.7.4 MacBook Air. She has two iPhones. They're both running iOS 5.1.1. She has enabled iCloud on ALL these three devices, using her @me.com identity and appropriate password.
She updates Address Book contacts ONLY on her MBA - for sync'ing to her phones - and she does NOT update any Contacts info on her phones in order to have them transferred BACK to her Mac. That's how she prefers to work.
The only way that her Address Book contacts will sync UP to iCloud from the Mac appears to be to select 'All on My Mac' within Address Book, and to Export as vcards to a file on her Mac, and then, in the online iCloud Contacts webpage, to Import that file of vcards. All well and good, but that seems to ignore all her various Groups; everything ends up bundled all into one group. (Perhaps each Group in her Mac's Address Book needs to be separately Exported and then Imported, but surely it shouldn't be as long-winded as that.)
(About 402 of these contacts are not accepted by the online iCloud Contacts, although they seem to fall within the requirements of not being too many, not being too large, etc. But that's a separate problem which I'm still investigating ..maybe the names are formatted incorrectly; I'll keep working on that separately..)
Anyhow: by explicitly Importing all those Address Book contacts into the iCloud Contacts, they then immediately start to get distributed - correctly! - to her iPhones ..but also back into the Address Book on her Mac, thereby DUPLICATING them all in Address Book! (They CAN be seen as SINGLE entries by choosing 'All iCloud'.)
I cannot understand the opaque instructions in all of the iCloud documentation. NONE of the documentation which I've studiously read (online, in System Prefs, in every Help file I can find) seems to indicate a DIRECTION for this iCloud sync'ing.
WHERE - if there is such a place - does one specify that contacts should go only UP FROM the Mac, and not BACK DOWN to the Mac?
There seem to be options only to turn ON sync'ing (or off), but not the DIRECTION of sync'ing, or which device(s) take precedence. (..In iTunes - when sync'ing phones to a Mac with a cable - there's a preference to over-write EITHER the host Mac with data FROM a phone, or to over-write an iPhone's data with data FROM the Mac..)
    So I'm asking..
    (a) Can one specify a DIRECTION when turning on sync'ing for a device?
    (b) With iCloud sync'ing turned ON on a Mac, is there any known reason why Address Book contacts should not send themselves UP to the iCould, instead of having to be manually Imported?
    (c) Does one Export Groups individually? ..But what if a name is in more than one Group ..does it get duplicated online in iCloud?
    (d) Is there not the intelligence within the iCloud facility for the system to NOT distribute back, or duplicate, contacts to the device which is the SOURCE of those contacts? Should it not do a comparison between iCloud and a device, and then recognise that those contacts already exist on the remote device, and therefore NOT distribute them BACK again to the SOURCE? (..Or am I having too high expectations?..)
Many thanks in anticipation, and I'm so sorry to be such a nuisance if this has already been answered a zillion times before.
(Yes, Winston; she has almost as many iPhones as you have AppleTVs!)
    All best wishes,
    David.

David, nice to hear from you again, hope you are well.
This user tip might help you understand how accounts work with Address Book.
I believe you have duplicates because you have two sets of contacts. "iCloud" and "On My Mac". Once you have created all your contacts in the iCloud account, you should delete them from On My Mac.
You can move contacts simply by dragging and dropping from one account to the other, you don't need to export them all to the desktop (although doind so will serve as a good back up if all goes wrong). You should note that this copies them though rather than simply move them, so you'll need to delete the old set when you are done.
As for preserving groups from the On My Mac Account, you can't but you can simplify recreating them by copying contacts (drag and drop) from an on my mac group to an empty group in iCloud.
Not sure about the contacts that you are struggling to move.
Many aspects of iCloud are difficult to understand, have a mull through what I've said so far and come back if everything still doesn't fall into place.

  • Worst Ever Experience with Blackberry

    I am a Gr8 fan of blackberry , Specially The BB10 OS.
Few years back i was using Blackberry curve the basic model & used it for around a year and a half.
I faced lots of issue regarding battery & its backup , Device Heating . Last year i switched to Blackberry Z10 coz of BB10 OS & its features & functionalities. After Using the phone around 6 months ,The usual Blackberry's Bookmarked problem with all of its devices started occuring which are as follows :-
    1. The Device Switches off itself automatically either in pocket or on the table you never know is it on or off. ( I have to use a paper to fit beneath the battery to tighten it up and get rid of the problem)
    2. The Devices heats so high that " i can bake a bread over it."
    3. Battery started draining so quickly while using 3G or using wifi or playing game or watching a video ( thats what a multimedia smart phone is built for) that it need charging thrice a day.
    4. Battery Never get charged too 100% , always stuck at 88% or 83%.
    5. While using hotspot, I faced huge problem of frequent network disconnections every time i start using hotspot.
    6. Recently the battery died. Couple of days before the battery died ,Phone became barbeque, Battery started leaking a bit from its terminals and its been only an year i have purchased the phone.
I brought to notice all the above issues to the only blackberry authorised service center in bhopal, They asked me to buy a new battery for all the battery related problems and the only resolution they have related to phone is to update the software which according to them will rectify all the problems , Which they have tried and did not succeed.
Blackberry has never been able to solve these issues in any of its devices . i have few friend who have been using blackberry 10 devices and facing the same problem. I paid a gud amount for a quality phone with high expectations but again blackberry has took me to a extreme level of frustration.Being such a big brand and providing such a poor quality of phones. This is my last blackberry device and ofcourse will not recommend it to anyone.
I have been Using Iphone also since last two years and is extremely happy with the level of performance and quality of the phone. In these two year i have never faced a single problem while using it at extreme. Apple has maintained its brand value amongst its customer very efficiently. You get what you paid for .

Actually, everything you described could have been OS-caused. There are plenty of reports here, for example, of folks having batteries that get over-hot on some OS levels, but not so much on other OS levels. The OS most definitely plays a part in how the device functions overall. The OS certainly cannot overcome hardware issues, of course...but must be ruled out as causal before a deduction of a hardware issue can be made.
But now I am confused. You now say that you are on 10.3.1.2852 and everything is perfect. So, does that mean you were on a different OS for what you reported in your original post above?
Occam's Razor nearly always applies when troubleshooting technology issues!

  • Not in love w/ the new iPhone 3G & thinking of returning it. Anyone else?

Here is my narrative of the iPhone 3G 16gb White… This is focuses on the negative aspects of the phone I have experienced in 24 hours of owning it… I am debating to Return it. Wonder if anyone else has had similar issues or thoughts…
    Disclaimer:
I have had a lot of phones w/ different carriers - the majority being PDA style phones. For the most part the 1st generation iPhone has been fantastic. Realistically every phone is going to have its issues/quarks and not be perfect. But Apple did a good job w/ the iPhone 1st generation (at least in my opinion) and so I am more than eager to see their “improved” version and reward them w/ my continued loyalty.
    Background:
With that said… I walked into an AT&T store and willingly renewed my contract for another 2-yrs. Coming from Verizon after many years – this is quite a sacrifice (AT&T is horrible). When buying the phone from AT&T store I had to go through strict scrutiny to make the purchase (i.e. I had to prove I was the primary account holder, have a credit card, have a driver’s license with picture, and confirm my SS#). In addition, since it was backordered I had to pay in advance w/ knowledge if I were to decide now to return it (even before receiving it) that I would be subject to a 10% restocking fee. So fast forward 7 days of waiting and I finally got the call to pick up the phone…
    *Negative Issues:*
1)While walking in the sun w/ the phone “off” (standby mode)… the sun really exposed the screen LCD traits… I am not sure how to explain this… but you can see the outline of the LCD which is dark, a lighter colored perimeter about .5mm thick around the screen that was lighter colored and inactive when on, and even can clearly see the 3 sensors on the top of the black border near the ear speaker… I don’t recall the 1st iPhone looking like this at all. It looks cheap as a result.
2)Going with what I said before, now I can’t get my eyes off the .5mm thick dead border of screen that is obvious around the iPhone… its distracting and not sure why Apple left it around the screen and did not hide it or put it under the real black border of the phone.
3)Going with the above again, this iPhone is slightly wider than the previous iPhone and has a bigger black border. In essence it makes the screen look smaller when compared to the previous iPhone – although I doubt it is the actual case but rather just an optical illusion.
4)They say the plastic backing made for better grip, feel, and supposed better reception. I however don’t necessarily like the feel, its slightly wider size, and the rounded edges make its feel odd/awkward. However, perhaps I am just too use to the older iPhone and it will take some time.
5)After fully charging the iPhone, I went to a friend’s house (45mins away)… went to eat (90mins)… then to see a movie – Batman (maybe 180mins)… at this point I still had never made an actual call from the iPhone yet and sent (4) texts and did some limited playing around on the web/email and etc… (Remember I had the iPhone 1st generation so I know enough to turn Bluetooth off, WiFi off, even Push off, kept fetch on every 15mins)… so anyway… the iPhone had been on standby majority of time (I even made sure to return to home screen to stop anything from running in background) and the phone was at about 30% battery life. I checked my email for 1 minute and the I got the warning that 20% battery was remaining!
6)Upon careful look at the iPhone I noticed that I had a dead pixel on the upper right of the phone - must have been there but just noticed it now (below the battery icon and to the right of the top icon). This is not unusual I guess in manufacturing and I have complete faith Apple will swap it out for a new iPhone… no big deal… just inconvenient.
7)While home I charged the iPhone again for several hours to full charge. Still have never made a phone call on it. For about 40mins I played around w/ the menus and features… played with a few applications feature (i.e. facebook, AIM, myspace)… went on the web… looked at the GPS map feature… went back to home screen then put the phone in Standby mode… Watched TV for a few hours… looked back at phone to see the batter was 50% dead? Played with phone for 10 mins with music/photo/etc features – put it back to standby mode and watched more TV for 1 hr than looked at the phone to see it at 30% battery level. I fell asleep for a few hours and woke up to see the iPhone had died.
8)One thing I must point out… that throughout my narration/events above… whenever the phone was in standby mode I noticed it was warm to touch. It was not too hot to burn and be unable to use… but noticeably warm as if it were overheating? I thought standby was supposed turn the iPhone basically off (at least a very low power consumption level).
9)Another thing I noticed – perhaps it’s just me… but the screen seems to smudge a lot more – if not easier. The other screen was not perfect but the smudging was manageable. This leads me to believe that there is something different with this screen. Perhaps a different material or so… just something doesn’t seem the same.
10)I have had to fully charge the phone 3 times in 24hours and still have yet to make a single phone call. It would seem that just simply roaming on the 3G network is killing the battery life. Many 3rd party applications also drain the battery. For whatever reason something is running in the background that Apple has designed (maybe just the nature of 3G) that keeps it running even in standby.
*Apple Customer Service told me the following:*
1)If I return the phone for any reason (even if it is defective and etc) I will have to bay 10% restocking fee.
2)The iPhone running on 3G severely limits the phones use… they state it runs 50% less than the 1st generation of iPhone… so 5hrs talk time at most and that they recommend to people to turn off 3G and keep it in Edge. Even in Edge mode –they say the 1st generation iPhone lasts longer.
3)They tell me the weather is another feature that affects the phone – if it’s a hot day than it will be less battery life???
4)They say there has been many reports of iPhone running hot – but it’s a result of the 3G and normal…
5)They say a huge majority of the iPhones 3G have dead pixels and hardware issues...
6)I can swap out the iPhone for a new one under warranty (especially for the dead pixel)… but this will probably make it impossible for me to return to AT&T since the serial numbers would be different… so I would have to live w/ the iPhone 3G at that point...
    Summary:
I am starting to think the iPhone 1st generation wasn't that bad after all. Perhaps I should just wait till much later or possible software improvements before taking advantage of an upgrade... I can always repurchase it later. Overall I am very disappointed by this whole experience due to my high expectations.

I agree... I am trying not to whine... but be helpful to others if they experience the same while get input before I make the decision to return (which I am leaning towards)… It’s still a great phone – but I expected something different. I also have been coming the internet and forums to see what other people think as well to make sure I am not being oversensitive about it. $300 for a 16gb is not buyers remorse kicking in… it’s just I am not sure if I see much of a difference from my perfectly good (8month old) iPhone 1st generation…
But yes… if all iPhone 3G were problematic it would be in the news… so I err on the side that I may be a unique situation or simply did not make a well informed decision when going to 3G.
Still… the idea of turning 3G off to get a full day of use out of an iPhone… even moderate use that most of us would expect w/o charging midway or multiple times is a bit much to swallow.
I don’t want to bash and just looking for peoples reaction. I still really like Apple and the iPhone in general.

  • MP3 and FileReference

    Hello!
I am having either thought constipation or lack of knowledge
or both. Or maybe I want too much.
My application allows user to select an MP3 file from his
hard drive and upload it to the server utilizing FileReference
class -- they browse, select and upload. Everything works fine
except I would like to give them an opportunity to listen to MP3
after they select the file but BEFORE they attempt uploading it. Of
course I could just let them upload the thing and then stream it
back but I don't like an easy life.
    Naturally, loadSound("blah.mp3") doesn't work because I
cannot know path to their file (or can I?). In any case I could not
find a way to get the path to the selected file, which is fair from
    the security standpoint.
I hoped that the file accessed through FileReference would be
somehow translated as an object into datatype SOUND (FileReference
obviously knows that it deals with MP3 – not the MIME though
    – and it would be nice to write my_sound:Sound = new Sound();
my_sound = my_selected_file; and get over with the issue) -- in
which case I would just start playing it. My high expectations did
not come true. I guess the shortest rendition of my question is: Is
there any way to convert selected MP3 into sound object, which I
    can manipulate?
    I hope I am clear...
    Thank you very much!

    > you can't write to a local file (except an so) using a swf in a browser.
An SWF can write to a local file using a FileReference.  See:

  • Anybody else having problems with airplay with ios 5.1 on iphone 4s

So i bought an iphone 4s a few months back and it came with ios 5, i then tryed it with my airplay speakers and they kept cutting out so i googles about it and found there was a known problem with iphone 4s and airplay speakers.
ios 5.0.1 then came out a few weeks later and the problem seemed to be fixed and i was happy as they worked fine after that
ios 5.1 then came out so i updated my 4s to this and started playing music through airplay and they started to cut out again, i turned them off and on and it happened again, then i reset them to my wifi router and the problem still occured
Is anybody else having this problem with airplay on there iphone 4s running ios 5.1?
If so, apple really need to sort this out! I bought my iphone with high expectations and to pay all that money for it not to work is not good

Try resetting your device by holding down both the home and lock buttons for ~10 seconds or until the device restarts, ignoring the power slider.

  • 4.3.2 update messed up my ipod touch... same issues peple complained about with 4.3.1

So the last update 4.3.1 that everyone complained about worked fine with my ipod touch... it was working great actually. Then I did the update for 4.3.2 and crash and burn... now I am having all the issues that people were complaining about with 4.3.1...
Battery life is much shorter than before
Cover art flow is messed up- most of the albums show up as a pixelated mess
Photo library is messed up- the images do not line up in the grid and are all cut off or look like tiled multiple images
When listening to music and the screen shows the full size cover art- the art shows up looking "tiled" not a full centered image.
The screen is kind of glitchy, like it freezes up for a second before doing what it needs to do- for example when the lock screen is on and you unlock it it kind of has this delayed reaction before changing.
Also, the combo of the update and the new itunes is totally screwed up... I am using windows 7 and can't decide if this is a weird windows issue or itunes and the ipod updates, but when I plug in the ipod to sync it will either wipe out all of my music and apps or will instantly freeze and I have to force quit. My back ups no longer work with the new updates, so I had to re-download all of my apps...  And when I can get itunes to work for a moment and I sync music the songs usually cut out randomly or skip- so to solve that I resorted to using media monkey- but this doesn't fix the artwork sync issues.
Having spent several hundred dollars on an ipod, i expect this stuff to work!! and it would be great if it worked with the programs as intended, but maybe I have high expectations.
Has anyone else had any of these problems? I am feeling like I might just have to suck it up and deal.

Mine has been doing the exact same thing. It messes up even more with each stupid update they do. One thing that I have found helps is restoring my ipod.

  • IPhoto - mismatch in pictures when trying to insert two-page panoramas.

    Hey all,
I am trying to give iPhoto a try by making my photobook from my vacation to the USA in iPhoto. Since I like full control over the page lay-outs I am designing all pages in Photoshop (CS3), en then insert them in iPhoto. All pages for my iPhoto book are therefore set as the full frame 1 photo lay-out, in which I copy my photoshop pages.
I looked up the recommended resolution, and it told me to use files of 3338x2587px, with 300 DPI. I made a photoshop document of 6676x2587px so I could design two pages as one, which would give me the option to insert a photo that is spread over both pages. However, when I insert the file into iPhoto, it does not match exactly. When I resize the resolution to 6636x2587, it does.
    Question:
Do you recommend using the first resolution, which is ok in theory but does not show up right in iPhoto's preview, or
Do you recommend using the second option, which shows up perfectly aligned within iPhoto?
    Second question, related to color profiles;
Should I embed the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile in my photoshop exports to make sure the colors in the final printed book are the same?

    Quelake
Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
I recommend using the one that look the way you want it -- when I do this I pay no attention to the photos size and just place it twice - one on each side of the book and adjust to look like I want - the results have been fine for me.
To some degree over thinking things actually causes issues - iPhoto is designed as a consumer product and works best when used that way - Most people doing that love the results - some people who over adjust and over edit photos are disappointed - not sure if it is because of the over editing or just that they have much higher expectations - but in any case that is what I've observed here - and the books are great
And yes - iPhoto works best with photos using sRGB - you may find some helpful hints here - http://www.apple.com/support/photoservices/preparation_tips/
Prior to purchasing preview using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference

  • Best wired solution to control an iMac from 2 other screens/KB/mice

Hi, I've got an iMac model 12,2  installed upstairs in my house and I want to be able to control it (use the OS and the data) from downstairs and from the attic, using a keyboard, a mouse a screen and speakers.
Both "consoles"  will be used to avoid having to change floors to get something from the computer or to keep contact with who I'm chatting with. The downstairs' console will used to watch TV (via streaming or a USB TV tuner), watch movies (from the computer's files), and play video games (from the computer or from a standalone game console).
I'm not fond of wireless solutions such as WiFi because they are harmful. It also cannot rely on internet because it needs to work even when internet is down.
The dificulty is that 9 meters of cables and audio are required but the iMac's miniDisplayPort only outputs DVI or VGA (which don't support audio, Thunderbolt being out of question).
The way it looks now I would have to use (for each console) a DVI cable, an USB cable, a jack/optic cable and an amplifier in front of each of these.
In your experience what would be a good cheap solution ?
P.S. I will choose the screens depending on the type of cables that must be used.

"In your experience what would be a good cheap solution ?"
In my experience good solution is not cheap most of the times.
You will need professional installation to works the whole thing right with all these amplifiers and cables.
You have to be careful with electro-magnetic interference and Video-Audio sync.
DVI is better than VGA but you will find it only in computer monitors. TV Set has VGA and HDMI mostly.
I'm not sure about optical audio length limits.
Jack must be "ok" (not high expectations) for 10 meters if you use a good quality cable.
    Version 2:
Thing about an iPad or even iPhone app (if you have an iPad/iPhone) to use as a mouse and keyboard via Wi-Fi. .
Video and audio still needs cables unless you can stream from iMac to Apple TV.
You will need 2 Apple TV devices so it is not cheap either and maybe not to fast for games.
