High latency ping to local router on wifi

I'm running 10.10.3 on a MacBook Air mid 2012 and have started to experience very high latency when using WiFi. I've gone through some of the internets and deleted a few files out of /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ but that didn't do anything. A few other searches yield similar stories but nothing suggested fixed it. For the life of me I can't figure this one out.
Doesn't matter what WiFi network I am using
Hardwired works great
Here's a sample of what I am seeing. Packet loss being 0% is only on the LAN.. as soon as I ping something on the WAN I'm getting a few percentage dropped packets.
$ sudo ping -i .1 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1): 56 data bytes
--- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
76 packets transmitted, 76 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.372/244.464/1391.556/372.973 ms

There are multiple possible reasons.  Hosts aren't required to treat pings with utmost priority, so some of the variability could be just how busy the host is or there could also be congestion along the path, to name two possible issues.
Again, "basic" ping is really more to determine a host is "alive", not for highly accurate latency measurements.  However, if you enable IP timestamp, you might get more accurate RTT latency (you may need to calculate the deltas, yourself).

  • Time Capsule high latency (ping) when using WDS

    Hi!
    I have this WDS configuration.
An Airport Extreme 802.11g connected to my cable modem as WDS main
A Time Capsule as WDS remote.
Both are using channel 1 with WPA/WPA2 Personal.
I can access the Internet. Printers and AirTunes work fine. But I have some high latency when pinging the ISP modem on 10.0.0.1 from any device connected through the Time Capsule.
More specifically when I am connected to Airport Extreme 802.11g the ping looks fine: within 1-10 ms. Both if I am directly connected to the Extreme with a cable or wireless.
BUT when I am on Time capsule (both wired or wireless) my latency time looks very awkward ranging from 1 to 1500 ms.

All packets get there but they are terribly delayed causing bad communication while using Skype or SIP telephone from my laptop and imac when connected through the Time Machine.
I have tried to change the multicast rate on both of them but with no success... still bad latency
    Do you have any suggestion?

    I have found the solution.
I post it here so it might help someone.
The issue is: even if you are in WDS don't use the WAN port in the Time Capsule.
Leave that one empty and use the other 3 LAN ports... and it will make your Time Capsule work perfectly!
The weird ping result in my previous msg were produced by a computer connected into the WAN port on my TM set into WDS. The port works and behave as a LAN port actually but it's not working properly. Avoid using it!

  • High latency/ping times

    Greetings
I have had DSL for a while and have had no real issues until recently
My problem is that I am receiving high latency/ping times while using VPN and while playing internet games (doing each exclusive of one another of course). I am continually being dropped or if I stay connected the LAG is so bad that it makes using the VPON or playing games impossibly frustrating. All of this started about 5 days ago or so, so I am wondering what the problem could be.
My modem is new; I just got DSL in December. I have tried bypassing my router and still get the same result. I have also used computers running XP sp3, Vista Sp2 and Win 7 64 bit, all with the same result.
Any ideas? Also can inclement weather in Northern VA be causing issues with the verizon's overall network performance? all of that snow cant be good thing for DSL.
I am in SW VA and we have had alot of snow as well.
Anyways, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.. because VPN is how I work some days and this latency issue is causing me to re think my switch to DSL

  • Time capsule high latency

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Air, Mini and MBP all with the latest OS. I recently bought a Time Capsule which also has the latest firmware. I am getting latency that is al over the place over wireless when pinging the TC from any of those 3 devices. Also high latency pinging to eachother. It can be anywhere from 10-900ms. The average most of the time is 200+. I can ping the TC from my Windows laptop and get less than 1ms all the time. Anyone know what is going on here?

I'm noticing when I use sudo ping -i .1 <TIMECAPSULE IP>, my latency becomes within the 5-10ms range. When I 'disable' the 5GHz and connect to only 2.4GHz with the sudo ping, my latency becomes sub 2ms latency. Windows laptops on my network are always less than 1ms. What is going on here? Is this some sort of power saving feature on the Macs?

  • [WRT54GL]Ping(Latency) to my router via WiFi :/

    Hi,
I've wireless network in my flat.
I have seen that my ping(latency) is higher.
    Earlier my ping was <1ms.
I have changed system to Windows 7 and protection to Eset Smart Security 4 Home Edition. Now I mostly get ping to my router 1ms, sometimes is higher(to 83 ms!).
I don't have any trojans, viruses on my notebook.
I have checked my Hijackthis Log - nothing wrong, did scan - nothing wrong.
I have tried to change channel. I have changed my channel from 11 to 4.
I have tried another channels also. Always the same!
I don't what I should do with it.
    My router is Linksys WRT54GL.
Here is ping by CMD to my router:
Ping to the most popular service in my country:
    Changing channel didn't help.
I haven't viruses. I have scanned my computer today and checked Hijackthis log - NOTHING.
    I have Windows 7.

When you login to the setup page of your Wireless Router, under the sub tab of Wireless you need to click on "Advance Wireless Settings" and below Change the Beacon Interval to 50,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2201,Change the RTS Threshold to 2202 and Click on Save Settings. And let the Wireless Channel on your Router be set to 11.
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...Once Connected to your Wireless Network now you can try to ping from your computer.

  • Auto route change for high latency

    Dear Boss
I have cisco 2811 at branch and 3845 at Head office. Two link with 256 kbps bandwidthe each. I did as follows:

    Keep alive 5 4
    IP xxxxxxx
    Interface Tunnel 2
    Keep alive 5 4

    Ip route X.X.X.X tunnel 1
    Ip route X.X.X.X tunnel 2 10
When link 1 down,  traffic change to Tunnel 2. its OK.
I want  when link1 flaxuate or latency high (more than 60 ms) traffice change to tunnel 2. If link 2 goes high latency automatically change to tunnel 1.
What can i do for both end  ????
    Please help me .

Things seem ok at the moment, but this this high latency only happened in the evenings. Will check this evening to see if it happens again.

  • High latency and some PL, culprit seems to be a router within comcast

Hi: I reported this issue to Comcast support but I think I'll post it here too. I'm seeing high latency routing through the Comcast network to a variety of locations. In all endpoints I try, I see high latency except when I hit Comcast endpoints (which makes sense). Here's some output for you: WinMTR outputTraceroute output Note that in all cases, there is a significant slowdown somewhere between hop 9 and 11, always at a comcast router. This issue has been going on for a few hours. Anyone else seeing it?

Hi: (Not sure of the correct forum for this type of request so I'm reposting here after first posting over here)  I posted a couple days ago with some issues that seem to have returned. Seeing high latency and occasional PL trying to get from my home to a variety of well-known endpoints. WinMTR output. Anyone else seeing the same? Comcast? This is starting to become a thing. Really annoying for those of us who rely on low latency connectivity when working from home!

  • Very high latency over WiFi

My Arch install has been working fine for several months, but last week my network performance suddenly became extremely poor over wireless (this is a desktop with PCI wireless card installed). Wired connections still work fine. Other computers on our wireless network have not had any problems.
The problem is extremely high latency. If I ping google.com, I get numerous responses with times over 1000 ms, and often duplicates. Functionally, it causes websites to load slowly, and I often have to reload a site multiple times before it will fully load. If I'm signed into Google Chat, it will frquently report that I am disconnected, and then re-connect a few minutes later.
The primary indication of the problem is that I receive the following in errors.log:
Sep 12 11:53:21 localhost kernel: [ 776.679738] ath: Failed to stop TX DMA!
This message seems to be loosely correlated with connectivity problems, but not always. I also occasionally receive the following; it usually seems to be after the computer has gone into hibernation:
Sep 12 11:16:48 localhost kernel: [ 5584.707913] ath: Unable to reset hardware; reset status -5
Sep 12 11:16:49 localhost kernel: [ 5585.964084] ath: Unable to reset channel (2412 MHz), reset status -5
Sep 12 11:16:49 localhost kernel: [ 5585.964583] ath: Unable to set channel
Sep 12 11:16:50 localhost kernel: [ 5586.143980] ath: Unable to reset channel (2412 MHz), reset status -5

Sep 12 11:16:50 localhost kernel: [ 5586.916044] ath: Could not kill baseband RX
When this happens, I lose all wireless connectivity until I reboot. I can't even scan for networks.
I'm using wicd and wpa_supplicant. The problem is intermittent--sometimes everything will be speedy for an hour or two, but then it will suddenly slow down.
If you have any idea what might be happening or how to diagnose it, I would appreciate it!

  • High latency issue When connected through Wifi

    Hi
I have configured wlc 2504 with cisco 3600 ap .when i connected my laptop wlan on n range,i tried to ping with my network devices am getting high latency 130ms,150ms
Can anybody provide solution for this
    by
    Veeramani.G

    Hi Veeramani,
There are actually a lot of different factors that can go into high latency type problems on your wireless deployment such as co-channel interference, interference from other wireless devices, and overall utilization on the AP/Channel.  With that said, there are a number of questions that need to be answered:
    1. Is this issue isolated to either the 802.11b/g 2.4Ghz, the 802.11a 5Ghz, or both bands?
    2.  While associated to the Access Point, in the Controller Web interface, navigate to Monitor > Access Points > 802.11a/n or 802.11b/g/n(pick the band your client is associated on) > Find the Access Point and scroll to the far right.  Hover over the small blue box and select 'Detail'.  Find the section labeled 'Load Statistics' and let me know what you see as the Channel Utilization percentage as well as the 'Attached Client Count'
    3. Since you have a 3600, I am assuming you have CleanAir enabled on them.  Navigate to Monitor > Cisco CleanAir, and see if you can pinpoint any noticeable interfering devices with high % Duty Cycle

  • Slow pings to router via wifi

    Hi,
The problem is that when I ping my wireless router , average time is about 10 to 15 ms, with minimal time 0.5ms.  Connection is with WPA2-PSK, wireless driver ath5k.
I use NetworkManager, thought that this may be a problem, but no, manually connecting with wpa_supplicant gives tha same results.
But under Mint 15 live dvd everything is ok:  min ping 0.5ms,  with average ping under 1ms.
Btw the same problem is in Manjaro Linux.
I tried to remove /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf,  thinking that some misconfiguration there confuses NetworkManager but it didnt help.
So now Im stuck, can anyone help?

  • Very high latency on my MBP 3,1 (mid 2007) with airport extreme card 0x168C

    Hi
I wanted to let you know that i filled a bug report concerning a problem involving a MacBookPro3,1 and my airport extreme card (AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87) Firmware Version 1.4.16.2)
If you've got any feedback, please feel free to share it with me.
    Here's the bug report:
    Hello
I'm experiencing very high latency on my MBP when connected using Wi-Fi in my living room and I believe this is a software bug.
This is the trace of my ping test to my router (5m from me):

Obviously, my Mac has very high latency where my PC works as expected.
I tried resetting the PRAM, but i didn't affect my results.
I tried updating Airport with the latest AirPort Client Update (http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro), but my hardware wasn't eligible for that update (Mid 2007 MacBookPro).
I believe this isn't a hardware bug because i get acceptable ping results when next to my router or in other rooms of my flat.
Can you help me with that bug ?
    Regards,
    Laurent

  • High Latency World of Warcraft (upto2000ms)

    Hi guys,
I'm wondering if anyone can help diagnose the problem im having of an evening while playing world of warcraft normally i used to sit at a nice 45-55ms home/world in WoW but the last week it has jumped up to 600-2000ms my bb speed is fine even while the latency is high as i have done some tests using speedtest.net while having high latency, it shows the same 600-2000ms but speed is unaffected it seems,
    Info from my home hub
Line state Connected Connection time 0 days, 01:29:18
    Downstream 7,616 Kbps
    Upstream 448 Kbps
    ADSL Settings
    VPI/VCI 0/38
    Type PPPoA
    Modulation G.992.1
    Annex A
    Latency type Interleaved
    Noise margin (Down/Up) 11.2 dB / 24.0 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up) 26.5 dB / 15.0 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) 13.4 dBm / 1.6 dBm
    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote) 0 / 0
    Loss of Power (Local/Remote) 0 / 0

    HEC Errors (Down/Up) 17 / 0
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote) 9 / 1
As i said the speed is fine and im happy with my speeds its just the latency is stopping me playing with my mates online of an evening.
I am connected to the master socket to the home hub>ethernet cable>pc i tried replacing the ethernet cable too.
Just other info that may or may not be required
Download speed achieved during the test was - 5820 Kbps For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps. Additional Information: Your DSL Connection Rate :7616 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM) IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps
    Thanks
    Martin

I see the exact same problem of an evening whilst too am playing Wow, ...that this only happens of an evening surely suggests that it is how the traffic is being managed by BT that would be causing such issue ?
Away from Wow of an evening I do still get to see very good net.
Have just in the last few mins been disconnected from the game, immediately prior I was seeing a latency of 41ms Home and 682ms World.

Is my service being "Throttled" of an evening a guild friend has suggested to me, summat about how BT might be interpreting p2p signals.
I dont really understand such..just relating some of that that has been suggested to me as a cause for this problem.

  • High latency to LA riot games servers

    Hi,
I have been facing some very annoying latency issues with my FiOS service when playing league of legends.  I usually have a 90ms-100ms ping in this game, which is bearable, but occasionally (once or twice a week) it will jump to as high as 160-180ms.  I have pinged their servers directly from the router when the problem exists and those numbers are consistent with what I see on my desktop and laptop, so its not an internal network issue.  I dont have any speed issues or ping spikes, and most local pings test fine during this time.  I ran a trace for both periods and noticed some heavy latency within what seems to be the verizon network, and was wondering if something can be done about this??

Not sure where you are located but yes we have been experiencing the same issues here for the last couple of days as well here in the Southbay area of SoCal.  It was really bad with latency about two months ago and it was better for about 3 weeks until 2 days ago then the same problem started all over again.  Tech support, customer service nor the Premium Tech Support service will be of any help since we tried all of that with numerous calls and many hours on the phone with the same reply: "everything tested ok on our end" and "it isn't a problem with Verizon". Well, we don't have a problem with internet for anything other than online gaming especially with League of Legends.  We've narrowed it down to a particular server which is not owned by Verizon.  Our tracert shows that we have over 30 hops at times and one of the servers which is not owned by Verizon seems to be the problem.  Verizon tech support said that it is not their problem to deal with after so many hops...so the plea or the question to have them do something about it is falling on deaf ears.  Extremely frustrating!!!  Don't know what to tell you at this point other than we are looking at other options for ISP.
The last we heard from a tech support person was that he would elevate the request to have their networking people look into contacting the owner of the server that is causing the problem.  Haven't heard a peep back from anyone and it has been weeks.  Sad to say but nobody at Verizon is interested in checking into this problem that I have seen so many other customers complain about.  Guess it's beyond the normal "power off your router" kind of tech support and nobody gives a hoot!!!

  • Windows 7 and Networks with High Latency

We are currently trying to rollout Windows 7 on our network to replace XP but have encountered an issue whereby we have remote clients that access the network over high-latency satallite links (BGAN and Vocality/Satellite). The latency of the links (based
on ping results) can be 600ms for Vocality and 1-3s for BGANs.
The particular services that don't work are a full motion video solution using TVI Viewer 7.9.1 and Outlook 2003 or 2007. These work fine on Windows XP. Shares can be accessed but are significantly slower than XP and ping does respond fine.
Windows 7 is running on Panasonic Toughbook CF52 and CF74 and I've tested in with a vanilla install with no updates and not on the Domain (2008R2 native) to eliminate GPO interference and tried it with all MS updates as of about 2 months ago.
I've tried removing the extra services on the network card (Topology Discovery, ipv6 and QoS), updated to the latest NIC drivers from Panasonic and drivers from Intel themselves. Reduced the MTU to as low as 500 and increased the Frame size (I forget what
to but was following a guide for slow links).
I've successfully replicated the issue on out development system using a satallite simulator.
Windows 7 with Outlook and TVI work fine on our network when connected via the LAN, ADSL, 3G and WiFi.
I'm currently analysing Wireshark captures but they don't seem any different to the XP ones.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
I noticed that your issue just happened when you use satellite transmission connection.
The fact is that this kind of connection in Windows 7 use TCP protocol. Transmission Control Protocol ( TCP ) under ideal conditions can provide reliable data delivery, but it is inherent in the existence of a throughput bottleneck, with the emergence on
the long-distance WAN packet loss and latency increases, the bottleneck is becoming more prominent and serious. In satellite networks with high loss, effective throughput may be as low as 0.1% - 10% of available bandwidth.
However, FASP can be the solution.

Who can I  get in touch with to help troubleshoot this issue?  I have gone through all normal basic troubleshooting steps such as the ubiqutous reboots of all technology.  Many thanks.
    Chris.

Is that problem consistent?  My ping/tracert is fine: also from Infinity connection.  I can't check the VPN itself.
I see your route and mine are both pretty similar and indeed both go through 212.140.206.90
You seem to have very high pings even to the HomeHub.  Normally that should show up as 1ms or less even with wireless.
