High usage with Jet Pack

I am having the same issue with Verizon, just switched to the Jet Pack with them a month ago, I have upgraded to 10 GB and after 6 days it said I was at 75%.  75%!  That is ridiculous, I have 10 GB.  They seem to give the same answer to everyone, shut the modem or the computer off at night.  Really?  That is just ridiculous, obviously if this many people are having issues, Verizon you need to fix it! I got a new Sim card today, have to see how that goes, but I am basically afraid to use the computer at this point, since I know I will get a text shortly saying that I am over my limit after 10 days into the billing cycle.  Just like everyone else, I don't stream movies, just basic internet usage. I want to cancel my service because now I have to upgrade AGAIN!  My internet is costing me $100 per month!  I left AT&T at $35 a month, your cost is excessive and unnecessary!  I also have 2 phones with you as well and as soon as my contract is up, good bye Verizon!  I have been with you for 9 years, and I know there has to be a better way than this.
Signed,
Irritated!

I completely sympathize. I have posted elsewhere my experience and disgust with Verizon about the issue of large data sessions of multiple GBs when there is no computer or devise connected to the Jetpack.  But worse is the total arrogance of the Verizon representatives I have spoken to about this issue. Forgive me if I re-post, but, I want to share my experience as widely as possible to warn-off anyone from doing business with Verizon. I have 5 iphones and despite streaming videos on youtube, etc, I have never exceeded the 3GB plans on any phone. Now I have had a jetpack for 5 days with only one laptop from my office which is connected to the jetpack and have 7 GB of data use, having never streamed a video, never downloaded a file other than short emails, and have all automatic updates off on my computer. In fact, the way our organization configures our laptops, it is impossible to update or download software, and certainly I would never use the office laptop for streaming, etc. I originally purchased the jetpack so I could read and send work emails while on vacation where I do not otherwise have internet access and using my phone is cumbersome. What a terrible mistake and please, everyone, do not make the same error by doing business with Verizon! Anyway, here is my original post.
"I wish I had read these posts before purchasing a jetpack and opening an account with Verizon. I purchased a new 6GB data plan. Within hours of connecting the devise to the network it registered over 3G of data usage, even when there were no devises (e.g, no computer or any other wireless devise) logged into to the jetpack. Two days later there was another 1.5 GB data session, again when there was no devise connected to the jetpack. In fact, there has only ever been one computer connected to the jetpack (as access is password protected), and that computer was on an airplane several hundred miles away when the data session occurred. I called customer service and spoke to someone named Jeff (he refused to identify himself further) who indicated that it is "normal" and not unexpected since the Jetpack updates and connects to the network, especially soon after activation. He admitted that there would be large data sessions even when all devises were shut, and the data use (e.g.,3GB) was just due to "normal" network activity. Needless to say I expressed my outrage, but he said, "that is just the way the system works and I should not be surprised by intermittent large data sessions, even if there is no devise connected to the jetpack". I asked him, "Can you imagine if your phone suddenly showed 4GB of extra data usage, evening though there was no email downloaded or website visited, just by virtue of your phone being on Verizon's network?" His response was simple: this is not a phone. Beware of Verizon jetpack. I certainly will terminate my service and end any other relationships with Verizon as soon as I can. This really is unethical, and possibly criminal."

  • Z10 - High CPU and Battery Usage with BBM

I recently updated my Z10 (UK and EE Carrier) to 10.2.1.3062 and every day or so I am getting very high CPU and Battery Usage with BBM running in the background.
I have never used BBM and have no active or past conversations or contacts.
This morning, it used around 60% battery in under 3 hours, with 95% of that time sat at 'idle' in my pocket.
Sometimes its after I have connected it to my car stereo (charging and streaming music via USB) on an Alpine CDA-117Ri, but I dont think thats a cause.

  • Jet Pack ussage overages due to equipment failure, where to get help?

During the month of May, I received alerts that my data usage on my jet-pack was exceeding our usage plan. This is highly unusual for my husband and I as we simply use the Jet Pack for internet (it's not connected to our television or any kind of home management system). There are two users (My husband and I) in the house, neither of which use the internet for more than web browsing. We do not download movies, or transfer giant files. A 10G plan is more than enough, as our normal usage usually leaves us with 3-5G left over.
When the overages started, I immediately contacted Verizon about this to try and find the problem (investigation of phone records will prove this timeline). We went through the standard procedures to make sure of certain things like, a secure password, that we were turning our devices off at night, so on and so forth. After several days of back and forth between customer service representatives and finally technical support it was discovered that the battery in the device had "burnt up" (for lack of better term) and in the process it also burnt and warped the SIM card.
We had to go to our local Verizon store to get a new SIM card and a battery was shipped to us by Verizon. At our local Verizon Store we were told the damaged SIM card could definitely have caused data overage issues, because of data transfers being repeated, and that once the equipment was inspected by Verizon the charges would surely be corrected. Verizon Support didn't agree and said we had to pay the balance due. We disputed the overage portions of the bill and they were set aside until the battery got to Verizon for inspection. Verizon never asked to see the SIM card just the battery.
That battery has since arrived at Verizon and has been inspected. Verizon support told us that neither the battery nor the SIM card could have caused the overages or any kind of data transfer issues and it was our responsibility. We have paid the balance.
When our usage is reviewed, it is extremely obvious when the overages started. We went from using 10-20,000k a day to 1-1.5 million k per day. Over the course of the next two weeks we battled this overage problem with the Verizon Support Team. Once the battery and burnt SIM card were discovered, technical support told us to stop using the device and they would send a new battery and we needed to get a new SIM card from our local store. (Note: I had already purchased a second battery for our use [power outages, or traveling] but it took a day to get a SIM Card) You can see in our data usage the 0K usage, this being the time it took to get the new SIM card. With the new battery and new SIM card installed we were back to our original normal usage of 10-20K per day. By examining the usage, it's plainly obvious that the damaged battery and SIM card were the problem.
The proof is in the pudding here. The bad battery and burnt/warped SIM card caused astronomical data transfers, once the battery and burnt SIM card were replaced all was back to normal. The data usage and our phone conversation timelines with Verizon are both easily inspected by Verizon, however Verizon still claim it's our fault.
Prior to taking this to court I would like to make sure I have exhausted all my channels with Verizon (This forum being one of my available channels), I would think that if someone in Verizon management would take a few minutes to look at the our data usage versus phone conversations, our usage history, and the damaged equipment and match that information with the phone records of our calls for support, they will see that we tried to do everything in our power to correct this issue while it was happening and that it was an equipment failure that caused the problems.
As I mentioned, we have paid the bill, however, this is only to keep the peace at this moment.
I am willing to take this to small claims court if need be, but there has to be a more civil solution for both parties here.
What is my next step per the support here in the Verizon Support forum?

  • Jet Pack misinformation

After doing some research, and asking a LOT of questions about the Verizon jet pack, including telling them exactly what we planned to do with it (Stream video from Netflix, Hulu Plus), we decided to try it out as our internet bill here is getting out of hand. I was told that 5G of data would be plenty for what we wanted to use it for. We hooked it up...very slick and easy to use, and used it ONE NIGHT. The next day I had an alert that we had used HALF of our data!!!!!! I called immediately and the representative told me that I had been MISINFORMED  about it being the right internet connection to use for what we were going to use it for!! I canceled right then. Then I got my bill....there was $100 in extra fees!!!!! Overage charges, set up fee, re-stocking fee....I was FURIOUS!! When I called and complained, the representative was able to get the set up fee and overage charge taken off...a whopping $41 of the $100!!!!!! I shouldn't have had to pay a THING since it was VERIZON'S MISINFORMATION that I even ordered it in the FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!! We have been with Verizon for SEVEN years.....I have never felt so betrayed in the years we have been with them. They have always been good to work with. For the first time since we went with Verizon I am thinking of going with a different company!!!!!

If you did research you would have known that 5 GB is NOT good enough to stream Netflix or Hulu. And of course a salesperson is going to tell you yes their service will work for what you want. They don't want you get service elsewhere. Or the salesperson was just stupid which is a real possibility.
Netflix tells you on their own site that HD streams use up to 2.8 GB an hour. Seriously how many movies did you think you could watch with only 5 GB regardless of what person told you? Sorry but mobile internet is not for streaming movies or music for that matter. It's for BASIC web browsing. 1 hour of Netflix a day could use 70 GB per month or more. You need REAL internet if you want to do that.

Good quality (uses up to 0.3 GB per hour)
Better quality (uses up to 0.7 GB per hour)
Best quality (uses up to 1 GB per hour, up to 2.8 GB per hour if watching HD, or up to 4.7 GB per hour if watching 3D)

In addition, you will need a broadband internet connection.
For Standard Definition videos we recommend a downstream bandwidth of at least 1.5 Mbps for a smooth playback experience.
For High Definition videos we recommend a downstream bandwidth of at least 3 Mbps for a smooth playback experience.

  • High bill with unusual calls and texts from non-functioning numbers?

We have a family share plan with 3 phones, one phone for my husband and two phones for our employees.  Our usual phone bill runs around $150.  Our last bill was over $600, the majority charges being on one of our employee's lines.  This particular employee has been with us for over 10 years, and has always been extremely trustworthy and very frugal in his usage of his phone to make personal calls (very infrequent and always less than 5 minutes in duration, unless made during the free nights and weekends timeframe).  Our latest bill showed over 1,000 texts to/from his phone, as well as over 3,000 peak calling minutes (both to/from his phone) alone.  Many of the peak calls are lengthy in duration (30+ minutes, up to 120 minutes).  I realize this post is long, so will divide it into headings so that it makes more sense:
    Information on usage:
Our employee insists that he did not make these calls and texts (he does not even know how to text), and what is odd about the numbers that appear on the detail (both text and voice) is that they fit into one of two categories:
    1.  There are calls to two particular non-local area code numbers (and possibly bogus, as they have area codes 523 and 352(?)).  When I call the two numbers, I get the following messages:
From my landline:  When called from my landline, adding a "1" before the 10 digit number, I get the recording stating that "your number cannot be completed as dialed, please check the number and dial again"
From a cell number- When calling from my own VZW phone (on separate account from husband's), I get a VZW message that the number "has been changed, disconnected or is no longer in service"
    2. They are local area code numbers, but when I call the number, I get a recording asking me to enter my pin number (in other words, they are numbers that cannot receive incoming calls, but according to our bill, have not only made calls to our employee's phone, but also received calls.  I have done an online lookup on these numbers and they are all cell phones.
    3.  When I have tried to text the non-local numbers from my VZW phone, I get messages back stating that these are landline numbers and cannot be texted; when I text the local numbers, I have texted a generic message along the lines of "I can't reach you on the phone.  Please call me as soon as you can" but I do not receive a call back.
We cannot speak directly with our employee right now (he is in Mexico to pick up his elderly grandmother),  nor can we access our employee's phone to check the log, call history, etc. because he has the phone with him.  Due to this, when we discovered the high usage, we immediately "suspended" the phone line so that no calls could be made or received.  Subsequent to suspending the line, we have talked to his family a couple of times -- one time he happened to call them on another line, so we talked to him "indirectly" through a family member on another line with him.  He was alarmed about the calls and insists he did not make them.
He does have children but they are forbidden (by him) from using the phone, and he states that he always keeps the phone in a case on his hip, thus no one else has access to the phone.  To go even further, it seems that most all of the calls to these unusual numbers are made on weekdays, during school hours, so I feel sure the calls were not made by his kids.
Calls to Verizon:  When we first called Verizon, they suggested we suspend the phone until we could speak to our employee.  Subsequent to our indirect conversation with him mentioned above, we called them back and told them he stated that he did not make the calls nor send the texts, and that we believed the phone might have been compromised, cloned, hijacked or whatever.  First, the customer svc rep looked at our account and suggested that we put an unlimited text on the phone for the current unbilled usage (there were a lot of texts, and we have no text plan on the employee's phone), and then remove that plan once we get to the bottom of this matter.
Due to our concern about fraudulent usage, the customer svc. rep called the fraud dept. while my husband was holding on the line.  She came back on the line and told my husband that the fraud dept. said that "it cannot be fraud because if it was, there would be thousands of dollars in international long distance to countries like Pakistan and India." (WTH?)  Also, she said that it couldn't be fraud "because texts were sent to and from the telephone number so we know it was your phone."  (another WTH?)
She then went on to say that it looks like texts were sent to international numbers (???) recently (these same 523 and 352 area code numbers I referred to above).  Number one, if these were international texts, it seems odd to me that these texts show up on our billed and unbilled activity as "domestic text" and there is no premium charge assessed to our account for international texts.  Number two, if these numbers were international numbers, I imagine that we would be charged for outgoing international calls, which we were not.  Further, I imagine that the numbers would be displayed on our bill in other than a ten digit format, but am not sure, as no one has ever made an international call or text on our phone.
    Next steps:
Does anyone have advice for the next steps we should take and how we can get to someone in customer service who can actually help us with this problem, instead of what we experienced on our previous call?  Can we demand that Verizon launch an investigation through its fraud department on the activity on this phone, or is this at the discretion of VZW to launch an investigation?  I am unsure, since this was not given as an option by the customer service rep...
If we can get Verizon to launch an investigation, is payment of the portion of the bill with the unusual and disputed usage (namely, that which is over and above the usual usage) waived pending the investigation results, or will we have to pay the entire bill to both avoid having the phones turned off, as well as any detrimental effects to our credit?  We've been hit hard by the economy, both personally (I am out of work right now) and business wise (my husband's business has been doing only about 25% of its usual business), and we don't have the extra $$ for the bill unless we take it out of our grocery budget.
If anyone has any insight, suggestions or otherwise, I sure would appreciate it.  Sorry for the lengthy first post, but I thought it would be helpful to outline as much about the situation as I could in order that people could respond.  Thanks in advance!

    kbinga,
I know this is a confusing and frustrating situation for you. I would be happy to review the account in detail to see what is happening with the usage and charges to ensure it does not continue to be a problem for you. Please send me a direct message for further support assistance.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
When you activate an InfoCube, rebuild an aggregate, delete the data of an InfoCube or perform other operations, the SAP BW system creates fact tables. By default, data compression is not activated in these cases. However, usually the numeric values in a fact table are correlated or are located in a small segment of the value range. For this data, you can achieve good compression rates with less memory space requirements and a better utilization of the DB2 buffer pool and, therefore, less input and output.
Reduces application server access to Database. Ie.g. set the number range buffer for one dimension to 500, the system will keep 500 sequential numbers in memory SAP OSS note 130253: Notes on upload of transaction data into BW
After the load, reset the number ranges buffer to its original state: minimize unnecessary memory allocation.

  • Shared memory (System V-style) - High usage of phys memory and page outs

    Hi!
I get a much higher usage of physical memory when I use shared memory than I would expect. Please, I would really need someone to confirm my conclusions, so that I can revise my ignorance in this subject.
In my experiments I create a shared memory segment of 200 MB and I have 7 processes attaching to it. I have a ws of 1 GB.
I expect to see what I see when I attach to the shared memory segment in terms of virtual size, i.e. SIZE in prstat. After attaching (mapping it) to the process all 7 processes are about ~203 MB each and this makes sense. RSS, in prstat, is about 3 MB for each process and this is ok to me too.
It is what I see when each of the 7 processes start to write a simple string like 'Hello!' in parallel to each page in their shared memory segment that I get surprised. I run out of memory on my ws after a while and the system starts to wildly page out physical memory to disk so that the next 'Hello!' can be written to the next page in the shared memory segment. It seems that each page written to in the shared memory chunk is mapped into each process private address space. This means that the shared memory is not physically shared, just virtually shared. Is this correct?
Can memory be physically shared, so that my 7 processes only use 200 MB? ISM? DISM?
I create a shared memory segment in a C-program with the following calls:
    shmid = shmget(key, SHM_SIZE, 0644 | IPC_CREAT)
    data = shmat(shmid, (void *)0, 0);Thanks in advance
    /Sune

Your problem seemed reasonable. What were you doing wrong?

  • How come I can't connect to my wifi on my iPad?  My other think pads are connecting.  I reset all my settings and nothing.  We have a jet pack and I can connect to that?

I can't connect to our wifi.  All our other think pads are connected.  We have a jet pack and am able to connect...but why not our two think pads?  I reset my settings and still doesn't work?  Thx

Try rebooting the router. Whether or not it is working with other devices does not matter.

  • Is there virus software for jet packs?

Is there virus software for jet packs? All IPs have free virus protection, does Verizon?

    Nope.
Jetpacks do not support virus software on themselves.  Only the clients that are connected to the Jetpack need to have virus protection like your laptop, smartphone or other wireless device.  This is commonly the situation for routers and modems.
Otherwise if you wanted to provide yourself with extra protection then you would have to look into setting up some kind of a 3rd party firewall.  The firewall would protect your device from direct exposure to the Jetpack.  The virus protection software on your devices would then only have to worry about what makes it through your firewall.  Most OSs come with some kind of a firewall built into them already though.

Tried talking to BT customer service but no solution.
Whilst as a amatuer photographer and massive music fan I could be on Fb, Youtube, MySpace, msn all at the same time, msn is Bonkers crazy on flash and adverts etc, and I use an AD remover for FB.
I have tried disabling add-ons and Plug ins on firefox, but this year have had prob 3 or 4 Java, adobe Flash, and Firefox updtaes thus far. i am sure this background stuff could be eating up my usage, yet a non tech user cannot possibly do anything about this.
I post many pics on some sites and looking to do my own web site  but if Uploading my images (which i reduce) and viewing others downloading etc I know that would be part of the usage, but I only started getting the Usage Allowance emails in May  or June 2012, there was No issue the previous years with BT but Now it is an issue.
But I am pretty sure I was on Unlimited broadband but BT has put me on Option 1 10gb.
This is more of an info post to try and locate what can be done to reduce the Usage allowance

Thanks a lot for the reply.
I installed the update, and I think the '..\services.exe' issue might have overcome. (NOT 100% sure though)
    But the machine still, Hangs
Or, Auto Shutdown occurs with the msg. '.. the process lsass.exe has terminated unexpectedly'
Let me elaborate the Hang situation a bit, this is very new to my experience. I can launch some programs like Notepad.exe, but when forefox or IE does not run. TaskManager icon appears at the system tray, but the program interface does not appear, as if TaskManager is running while minimized.
And when i try to shutdown the computer from the start menu, the User Log off/Switch User option appears, instead of the Shutdown options.
Any help will be highly appreciated.

How long does the IPhone5c battery last for without hardly any usage with about 2/3 to 3/4 left?
Has the side affect of charging, where the battery's life gradually decreases overall with each charge, been fixed ?

    Eric,
They did say 12-14 hours, but as is always the case with such estimates, they invariably quote the 'best possible scenario' and almost never mirror 'real world' conditions.
If, from a fully charged position, you simply switch on your nano, and set it to continuously play through a long set of songs, with EQ off, backlight off, modest volume (50%) don't touch it during playback, then you might just get somewhere near this figure - and if you don't then it's either not been conditioned properly or it's faulty.
If you use it like me, daily for a couple of hours, with 2 secs backlight and switch songs regularly, using fairly high volumes then 6-8 hours is more likely. It'll even drain when it's not in use, even in sleep mode, albeit very slowly. They also tend to drain more quickly before they've been through their first few charge cycles (the conditioning period).
Personally I haven't got a problem with this though I can understand why some people have. It's not very impressive in this respect. Apple should be able to come up with something much better - maybe they should talk to Sony

    Hi,
That totally depends on the type of applications you have and the requirements of the applications.
If the applications are enterprise type, service oriented and Web 2.0 oriented, High usage, transactional, you should go with Weblogic.

    Kai,
Thanks for the question (and input). As you probably know, we have several partners that provide WLP-ready monitoring solutions providing insight into the utilization, availability, and performance of portal components, including Acsera, Quest, Intersperse, and Wily. In general, these tools are sophisticated and powerful, providing features such as SLA management, alerting, and drill down capability to meet the needs of operational, support, and development personnel tasked with detecting, isolating, and diagnosing performance and availability related issues.
In addition, we recognize the need to provide business users with straightforward statistics on utilization and performance. While we do not plan on providing such capabilities out of the box for the 9.2 release, we are actively investigating the possibility of leveraging the Analytics component of ALUI to provide such reporting capabilities for Weblogic Portal in the future.
