Home Network Speeds Using BT Infinity ?

I have networked x2 Windows 7 computers and I'm getting 10 MB/sec speeds when transferring files between the two rigs. Is this about right or can I improve transfer speeds ?
computer A = has gigabit LAN and connects to Gb port on BT Home Hub 3a
computer B = has 10/100 LAN and connects to standard port on BT Home Hub 3a
connection = BT Infinity 2
cables = cat5e certified ethernet cable for both computers

I'm not using the HH3, so can't really check but according to this article it says theres only 1 GigE port on the back, so I am assuming the other 3 a only 100mb connections.
He is saying he is getting 10 megabytes are second, which is 100megabits.
Don't think reseting it will help.

According to the bit converter the fastet he would probably get is 12.5MB, unless he is expecting more out of it.

  • IChat audio and visual won't connect on my home network, but will on others

    Hi there,
So here's my problem: When I try to connect via audio or video with iChat 5.0.3 it returns and error saying iChat can't connect. Text chatting works just fine. It only does this on my home network; I can take it work and connect to work's network and iChat functions just fine. My wife also has a mac using snow leopard and her iChat doesn't work either. We can connect to each other on our home network and use audio and video chat, but just can't connect to other networks. I'm using ATT&T U-verse and their 2wire modem/wireless router (model 3600hgv) that came with it, along with an airport extreme.
After carefully studying the other posts about iChat, I disconnected the airport and just used the 2wire, modifying the port settings as per the port forward website. I realized that the airport could have been using DHCP in addition to the 2wire, that's why I disconnected it. After doing these things, iChat still doesn't work. I'm not sure where to go from here.
Any help would be VERY much appreciated

    Hi,
    Nice info.
Does the 2WIre device you have include having UPnP ?
Different manufactures put it in different places so it could be anywhere in the set up pages.
If not does it have Port Triggering (Special Applications) ?
You will need to use this as you want to use two computers with the same ports.
This needs a different set up to Port Forwarding.
Alternatively put the 2Wire in DMZ (This opens all the ports to one IP)
List the IP the Airport device gets.
(It would be better yet if the DHCP was turned Off - the Airport would then need to be set up for Static routing (Manually) to keep the same IP)
This is the closet number to your model
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/2wire/3800HGV-B/iChat.htm
Did you set all the ports ? (These are the iChat 3 set but cover all the ones iChat 4 and 5 use)
Did you do the bit at the bottom ? (move the items to the right hand list that you want to use - listing both computers at the text field that reads "JoannasDell" (one at a time if it allows two computers by this method)

  • Printing on a home network

I have a Dell computer, Pentium 3, XP sp3 with a HP laserjet 4100N attached (printer cable) and I bought a new computer HP, 64 bits, Win7. I cannot attach the printer to the new computer as it does not accept printer cable connection so I installed a home network to use the printer via the Dell. The HP can see and recognizes the HP printer on the network but when I try to print it comes back requesting a driver installation. I have download and tried plenty of drives and none is acceptable. Any suggestions?

I know nothing about the 4100, I assume it's a parallel connection on it though.
You might try using one of these http://s.dealextreme.com/search/usb+to+parallel
To hook it up to your new PC.

  • Acessing Home Network from work

If i want to access my home network when i'm at work... what all is involoved in that?

    Hi:
What services are you running? Who do you want to be able to access them? How "tight" do you want your security to be?
I run a small personal email server at home, along with afp services, vnc, and ssh. To do that, I require all users to tunnel all desired services over ssh protocol 2.
To do that, basically, I open one single port in the DSL modem and forward that port to the computer hosting those services. You may or may not have to use static IP routing on your internal LAN 192.168 network for port forwarding, depending on how new/fancy your DSL/cable modem is. If you wanted to allow ssh to multiple computers, you'd have to ssh in on a non-standard port on at least one of them, which you can tell the DSL/cable modem to "cross-strap" to port 22 inside the LAN. I don't see why if you came in from the outside on two different ports, that you couldn't cross-strap one port to one of your internal 192.168 IP addresses on port 22, and cross-strap the other port to the second internal 192.168 IP, also port 22.
Then, add a line to each user's .bash_login files on their remote computers that says something like
    alias phoneHome='ssh -l {homeShortUserName} -L 5901:127.0.0.1:5900 -L 3238:127.0.0.1:3238 -L 5548:127.0.0.1:548 -L2525:127.0.0.1:25 -L 1143:127.0.0.1:143 {yourDomainName}
Now, each user launches Terminal, types phoneHome and gets an encrypted channel for VNC (first two "-L" port forwards), afp file sharing, smtp mail services, and imap mail services. And it's all encrypted. I would also recommend taking a look at http://www.corsaire.com/white-papers/050819-securing-mac-os-x-tiger.pdf.
After the user has "phoneHome'd," (s)he can launch Mail, ChickenoftheVNC, or ⌘k in Finder to start AFP. Your users' remote computers' Mail would use 127.0.0.1 as the imap and smtp server, ports 1143 and 2525 respectively, to access the server mail account set up there. To connect afp, the remote user would connect to 127.0.0.1:5548. To connect to vnc session, remote users would connect to 127.0.0.1:5901.
The hosting Mac (at home) would need to have VNC andARD services enabled (btw, VNC is pre-defined as an "other" "new" service when you add it in SysPrefs Sharing Firewall), and apple file sharing, and remote login (ssh) enabled in the Sharing Services tab. In the firewall tab, you would need to add smtp (port 25 TCP) and imap (port 143) and/or pop (port 110) if you are going to run a mail server. You don't need SSL if you tunnel over ssh. I prefer this approach because if you use public/private key exchange for ssh login (basically, like an automated PGP authentication), that is, to me, way more secure than password authentication, and it's two less ports you need open for universal access.
To get mail from other smtp servers, I recommend you get mailhop relay by dyndns.com. It costs $40 a year, and whenever anybody sends mail to your domain, it gets routed through them first, where they spam-assassinate it and virus-scan it before forwarding it on to you. The other advantage is that then, when you open port 25 in your router, you can restrict that port to only be accessible to traffic coming from dyndns' several mailhop relay smtp servers' IP addresses. Helps to cut down on the hack attacks by intruders coz a port scan from any other IP address will show the port as closed. MailServe, by cutedgesystems.com, is a GUI frontend for Mac's built-in postfix, and it also includes uw-imap. It lets you get an imap(or pop)+smtp mailserver up and running in literally minutes for only $20.
If you don't get a static WAN IP address assignment from your ISP, get dyndns.com's DynDNSupdater program (the same guys that have the mailhop services). Then, whenever, your ISP changes your DHCP-assigned WAN IP address, dyndns.com's DNS servers are updated with your new IP address, so your domain name can always be resolved. They offer a number of variations of TLD's for your domain name for free, or you can pay them for a custom one. But I don't have a problem with a domain name like jv.dyndns.org. But they've got a lot of others, like isageek.net and some other goofy ones. There are other programs like DynDNSupdater, but I am only familiar with dyndns. One thing is for certain, to me anyways, and that is being able to operate DHCP from your ISP is better than paying monthly premium for a static IP assignment from your ISP.
I mentioned mailhop relay earlier -- if you are going to be dynamic WAN IP from your ISP rather than buying a static WAN IP address, and are going to be running that mailserver, and you bought mailhop relay, you will probably find yourself wanting to buy another service from them for as little as $10/yr called mailhop outbound (pricing depends on amount of outbound mail traffic). Outfits like roadrunner.com and aol.com block smtp requests coming from servers whose domain names reverse-dns to dynamic IP space. So your users might not be able to send mail to aol or rr.com people, and others, without a service like this. Still, $10/yr is better than $5-$10/mo for a static WAN IP.
Digressing somewhat, if you are going to be running your own webserver, open to the public, you'll need to open port 80 on your DSL/cable modem (and in Sys Prefs Sharing Services) and forward that port to the computer hosting the web server, too. And, as Karl said, if running multiple webservers, you'll need multiple ports open in the modem, cross-strapped to port 80 of the appropriate server.
Last but not least (well, at least last for this post!) I would recommend installing a network intrusion detection system. One is available that comes pre-compiled for Mac OS X client, called HenWen. It is a GUI front-end for Snort, which comes included with HenWen (it's not the most recent version of snort, and it doesn't install snort in the usual default location that snort would, instead being contained within the HenWen application, but I still recommend it). Fairly easy to set up, although since the last version of HenWen came out, snort has added rule sets for spyware, so you need to add a rule for that in HenWen's GUI. Sign up for a free account at snort.org, so you can get the latest NIDS rulesets. It doesn't block bad things before they happen, but at least it lets you know that suspicious activity occurred after the fact -- which is way better than being totally oblivious.
And I guess I lied, this is actually the last thing: if your work's IT dept is like mine, they keep just about ALL destination ports closed. So you may need to try to telnet {yourDomainName} {port#forDesiredService} just to make sure that your IT dept allows outbound traffic to go to the desired destination ports on your home network, or use Tiger's provided Network Utility to port scan your home's network's desired ports.

The airport only finds other networks.  Not the home network which I have used before.
It doesn't help to search for new networks, try to manually search or add the network.  Doesn't
help to turn off/on the airport or even the mac.  Doesn't help to reboot the home network - which is
found and connected on the iPhone and iPad. (and network speed is good enough for many devices).
The network just doesn't come up on the list of available networks.
No chance to update software, since got no internet.

I did some googling and found alot of topics from you on this issue, to me it simply seems like on of the connectors is broken or loose.

  • Using Elements Organizer on a Home Network

Both my husband and I have been using Elements for a couple of years on two separate home computers.  However, we recently got a home network and would like to be able to share our files, with both of us being able to view and edit the photos from Organizer.  I can't figure out the best way to do this.  Ideally, we want to gradually move our photos to the network drive as they are organized so that both of us can edit/view them from there to avoid all the duplicates we have now.  We are using Elements 7 and Windows 7.  So far, my husband only edits in Elements.  He doesn't use Organizer or tags so we don't have to worry about importing his tags, but he may want to in the future.  I use both now.
It's my understanding that we need to move the photos to the server using Elements rather than Windows Explorer.  So I've done that, but my photos get "lost" when my husband edits and moves them, even though he is doing so from Elements and moving them to a shared folder.  After reading here, it looked like maybe the problem was that we each have our own catalogs.  I could create a new catalog on the server and move things into it, but that doesn't seem practical since I would lose all my tags.  Or I could move my current catalog to the server.  But looks like it may be best to keep Organizer/the original catalog on my computer in a shared location and import his photos into it due to speed concerns.  However, my husband really wants to keep the photos on the network drive for backup reasons, so I'm not sure how that will work.  Not only that, but I can't figure out how he can tell his PSE to pull up my existing catalog.
Any suggestions on the best way to handle this?  Thank you.

You can create a backup of your catalog and then restore it to the network. That will move the files and the catalog / tags. However I don't know if/how you can merge your catalogs... so one of you is going to miss out. To minimise the impact of this, write the tags to the files (Apparently the 3rd-party tool PSEDB is better at this than PSE itself), move them to the network and then import them... the tags should be picked up by PSE.
Also be sure to read around the issues surrounding having photos / catalog on the network... it is possible (I do it) but it has some issues. The main one is to make sure both your computers see the network as the same name/drive letter.
    Good luck.

  • I want to be able to totally block the FaceTime functionality in my home network.  I would like to do this at the router level.  Does anyone know the hostname or IP address that the FaceTime application uses? Or which port it connects to?

I want to be able to totally block the FaceTime functionality in my home network so my 4 kids aren't using the Facetime feature- It was easy for Skype just had to enter the work Skype on my Router Security list- and it denies access. I would like to do this at the router level for FaceTime? Only site I find in init.ess.apple.com - is this the startup site for Facetime?   Does anyone know a site I can block, hostname or IP address that the FaceTime application uses? Or which port it connects to?

I would presume so, but it might be worth your while to experiment and play around with different combinations to see if you can block FaceTime while keeping Game Center open.  Good luck!

How do I use my wireless Led TV as a second monitor to my mac book pro using my home network without any cables? Both of them are connected to home network

Having a gateway there is not going to be a problem. We just need to configure the Time Capsule correctly to work with the 2Wire.
You will need one ethernet cable to connect the 2Wire to the Time Capsule and a second ethernet cable to temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule so that it can be configured.
The 2Wire you have now should already be broadcasting a wireless network, so once you have the Time Capsule setup, you will actually have two wireless networks there.
Here's how to configure the Time Capsule to work with the 2Wire:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Connect another ethernet cable temporarily from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name for the Time Capsule, a device password (write this down) and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Wireless Mode....Create a wireless network
    Wireless Network Name....Your choice
    Radio Mode....Automatic
    Channel...Automatic
    Wireless Security...WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password....Your choice (write this down)
Check mark next to....Remember password in keychain
    Click the Internet icon
At the bottom, change the setting for Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart after 20-25 seconds and you should get the green light.
You should now be able to connect to your Time Capsule wireless network.
I'm not clear on whether you have tried to setup the Time Capsule to backup your computer. Post back if you need some info on that. We may need to start another thread for that as that will be a different subject.

  • Just got a new IPOD Touch and it wont connect to our Wifi home network with a Belken N Router. Our router uses WEP 64 bit security, but had a "blank" password field, which the IPOD did not like. Changing to a 6 char numeric PW didnt help either.

OS is whatever OS ships with current IPOD Touch
I cannot understand why the APPLE engineers have designed this product so that it has SO MANY WIFI problems.  This is supposed to be an easy-to-use product.  We've had no problems connecting our new laptop, our ROKU box, etc, but it seems impossible to get the IPOD touch to work.  NOTHING LIKE SPENDING XMAS MORNING DOING APPLE TECH SUPPORT TROUBLESHOOTING TO LEAVE YOU IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!!!  Argh!
In fact, the only way we have been able to get this expensive brand new IPOD to work on our home network is to DISABLE SECURITY in the router settings.  THIS IS ANYTHING BUT A GOOD IDEA.
DON"T KNOW WHY BUT MANY OTHER USERS ARE REPORTING THE SAME KIND OF PROBLEM SO APPLE ENGINEERING NEEDS TO GET BUSY AND FIX THIS PROBLEM SO THAT NEW USERS CAN CONNECT TO THE INTERNET WITHOUT HAVING TO BE TRAINED ROUTER ENGINEERS TO DO IT!!!!
Ok, sorry for the rant, but surely those of you who are experiencing this share my frustration.  This is not why I bought an APPLE product.
IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY THAT APPLE WILL NOT ALLOW A WIFI PASSWORD with more than one identical alphanumeric character?  Any ideas?  We also tried eliminating the 40 MHZ setting under Bandwidth settings in the router settings for our router, but it made no difference.  The router has the latest firmware, too.  Running out of ideas, and am ready to box this unit up and send it back!

Thanks, Bob!  You are correct.  And, we learned this as we spoke with APPLE TECH SUPPORT by phone on Christmas day (800-APL-CARE).  One of their reps spent the time to help us troubleshoot this, but the boiled down conclusion is your answer, and to repeat for the benefit of others, here is what worked:
    1. With our Belkin router set to "out-of-the-box" WEP 64 bit security, we could not get wireless access of any kind.  Only with the Security Mode set to DISABLED, could we gain access.
    2. Changing the router's security mode setting to "WPA/WPA-2...." and entering a new min. 8 char passphrase, and then entering that same passphrase into the IPOD Touch, and restarting the router, did the trick!
Based on this, and some info found in another posting, I can only conclude that the IPODs and IPHONES do not support WEP security mode in many generic routers used by thousands of consumers.  Hopefully, those same consumers can figure out how to change their wireless router setttings to WPA/WPA-2 security mode and ALSO get all their other wireless devices (PCs, laptops, WII boxes, ROKU boxes) all reconfigured to WPA mode, too.
I THINK THE BOTTOM LINE HERE IS THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE THAT APPLE NEEDS TO ADDRESS WITH WEP COMPATIBILITY and it may also be the case that MOST CONSUMERS ARE USING WEP 64 BIT security on their home wireless routers?
In any case, it's working now, so anyone who is having problems should try changing to WPA mode and post back here if it worked for them!

  • Is there a better way to share your music library outside your home network other than using an i-Pod classic?

APPLE-Here's a complement and a question.  Why has the i-Pod Classic fallen from grace compared to other i-Pods?    Please know that while I can share my music using home sharing within my home network with a different i-Tune account, it seems to me that the best benefit of having an i-Pod Classic is that you can give your dedicated music library and device to a friend or housemate to use outside your wireless network (and not on the internet) to use while traveling.   Am I wrong?   Is there a benefit to sharing the cloud usage with a friend.   Add that to the click wheel and I think I'm going to be a fan of the i-Pod Classic far longer than it is in production.  I hope Apple NEVER stops production of this device.   Are you listening Apple?

    Fightthegoodfightnow wrote:

Yes it is, and it's precisely what the music industry has been fighting about for years.
Interpreting the law to suit yourself does not render law ineffective. Apple's Terms of Use mention this:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise 'work around' digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about 'ripping' DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
...which is why my original response was framed as it was. Nothing to do with "attack mode". (You're the one with an "attack style" user name.)
    Fightthegoodfightnow wrote:
Heck, as I understand it, I can legally burn up to five copies of a bought song for noncommercial, personal use....so copying in and of itself is also not illegal.
As I recall, the music industry has acknowledged that making a copy of a CD (that you own, and still have in your possession) is regarded as "Fair Use" - and is therefore tolerated. But until that point was established just a few years ago, then technically, it was illegal to rip a CD into iTunes and onto an iPod. Slightly different to your interpretation. That same music industry (and the musicians) regard the following as unacceptable:
keeping a copy of a CD but disposing of that CD to someone else
lending the CD to friends, so that they can make a copy
making copies and giving them or selling them to someone else
    But what is okay is:
    Home sharing
use of the CD by someone in your family, living under the same roof
At this time, if a couple wish to combine their two iTunes accounts of purchased digital music once they get married, they cannot. Perhaps that's where Home Sharing comes in.

  • HT3819 Hi there. If I use "home sharing" on the same wifi network, does it use internet data, or only sharing over a home network?

Hi there. If I use itunes over home sharing in my house on 2 pc's, does it use data from my internet, or does it work over local home network?

You'd need both computers to be connecting to the same wifi network in order to Home Share.

  • Can't I use the TimeCapsule-harddrive as a "nas-sverver" and put files there to share within my home network?

I was told at a store that I could use the Time Capsule as a "nas-server" and share files within my home network. Isn't that possible? I cant move files from my computer to the Time Capsule. Is it only when I'm connecting another external harddrive by usb that it works? My 3 tb is kind of useless if that´s so.
    /Andreas, Sweden

    We recommend against it..
But you can do it.. simply make sure that file sharing in the TC is working and turn on the guest account.
What computers or devices are you having issues accessing the TC?
It does need the occasional reboot.. maybe daily.. to give it a swift kick and wake up.
If you are running lion.. please install the 5.6 utility which you will find makes life much easier.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
The issue is, the TC has no way of backing itself up. And TM cannot backup a network drive.. so any files that are only on the TC are going to be lost if it breaks down.. which one day it will.
Please do consider what it is designed to do..
Q3 here is a good place to start.

I'm looking for some help connecting linksys IP Cameras to my home network to monitor my property when I'm travelling.  I used to do this with linksys WAPS, but since I've discarded all my old linksys networking and standardized on airport, I can't get these things working.  I know that I have to identify my camera through the DHCP table and set up port forwarding and there is the problem.
My network consists of 4  base stations set up in a roaming network - same network name and passwords.  I need to do it this way so I don't have to switch network when I move from one side of the house to the other, go to the cabana, or my shop in the barn.  The network works pretty well since I went to a roaming set up.  Good performance, yata, yata, yata.
However, the roaming network requires the AEBS's to be set up in bridge mode, rather than sharing an ip address.  When the AEBS is set to  bridge mode, you don't see a DCHP table or have the ability to identify your IP Cam through the AEBS - and hence, no port forwarding.
I am able to identify and set up my Linksys IP Cam by locating the ip address on my FIOS router, even though, it's plugged into an AEBS.  I set it up, see the video, remove the ethernet cable from the IP Cam, restart - and I can't get to it from an AEBS.  In researching this, it appears, I should be setting up the AEBS to "share an IP Address", going to the DHCP table and identifying the camera's IP address and setting up port forwarding.  However, you don't see any of the DHCP or port forwarding options in Airport Network Utility when configuring in bridge mode.
I'm hoping I'm missing something here and that the solution isn't to set it up at the FIOS router level, but I'm beginning to think that's my only hope.  What concerns me there is that I should be able to see the IP cam on the network without port forwarding since I'm not coming from outside, and I can't even do this unless it's connected hard wire.
I'd appreciate any insight into this that anyone might have.  I've hit the wall with what I know.
    Thanks.

In a roaming network, your "main" router is the device that would require port mapping/forwarding to be configured in order to access the IP camera from the Internet. This router is also the one that would be provide the private IP address for the camera which you will want to be a static one.
So as you described your network, the IP cameras should be getting an IP address or you assigned it a static one and this is the address that you would enter in the Private IP address (or equivalent depending on the router used) field when setting up port mapping.
If you are not able to access this camera from the local network, then this should be troubleshot first.
