Homepage purpose

What is the purpose of a homepage and why is it needed for a iWeb page?

What is the purpose of a homepage and why is it
needed for a iWeb page?
Why do you think a "homepage" is needed for iWeb?
Homepage is the name of the earlier service on .Mac for creating webpages, which still exists in parallel, in a different part of .Mac space, but independently. Is that what you are referring to.

  • Safari wont open after downloading 'genieo', its taken over homepage on internet and only opens for 1 second before closing rapidly. deleted it but still cant open internet. please HELP!

safari wont open since downloading 'genieo' stupidly, well by accident i just looked what it is up..... as needed to crop song quickly and must have been on that page/..., i moved it to trash and removed it everywhere i could see it but its still taken over safari and so web page closes after 1 second of opening so i cant use it. There are removal instructions etc online but i cant get online to do them! how can i sort this out if i cant use the internet and change my homepage etc? Will people at Apple store be able to do this for me?

There are some instructions that take time with some attention to detail to attempt and also remove all parts of the genieo and other adware malware bad content that come with visiting or downloading a variety of web sites which may spread their ilk to those who unknowingly or unwittingly get downloads or install content that has been doctored with some untoward idea in mind. Some of the posers do this to disrupt or sell more dysfunctional cures to their created mischief. The cure (incl their uninstaller) may be as bad as the problem.

Genieo is a specific issue and has a section in there.

For general adware, a script (beta, if you try luck)
is available but it may not touch genieo...

The browser issue is covered under one of the topic areas, as that may also include a re-direct device where an extra button or home page to junk keeps loading. Incorrect removal of the badware may cause Safari to fail. However, you can get use a different browser to get information such as visit the above site, or here, etc.
I do not know if the techs or genius at Apple Store would be able to remove the problem. One way it to erase everything on the computer, and start all over, and lose all your stuff. You should have a backup of your created content on a drive external to your computer, in addition to TimeMachine backups, for restoration purposes; this done before an issue strikes. The methods of removal are covered in the linked pages above.
Another way, as suggested in detail by Linc Davis, can be followed and perhaps resolve the issue, too; at some point this topic thread will be seen by more than a few people. This is not a new topic here.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Firefox pulls up a cached version of my homepage (a cyclone warning/tracking page) showing me old information. Now I have surprise damage from a storm I should have known about, how do I get it to not cache this page?

I set my homepage to the Navy Research Labs tropical cyclone warning page so I can be sure to see developing storms every time I start my browser, but now it simply caches a version of the page. The cached page that shows old information, defeating my purpose. How can I get firefox not to display a the cached version of this page by default? (Yes, obviously I already know I can refresh the page each time. That is NOT my question)

If you leave tabs open to have them displayed automatically on the next start then you need to clear the browser cache when you close Firefox to prevent showing a cached version.

_*There are no Mac OS X viruses.*_
Delete your browsers history & cache. Boot up from your install DVD and run *"Repair Disk"* from the Utility menu.
    If that does not work.......................
    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff.”
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

Check out User Tips: Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal
    Viruses:
Are programs that earn their name by their ability to replicate themselves locally & often across a network. Many attach themselves to to other programs. When you launch one of these programs, the virus code launches as well & the virus goes about its nefarious business.
Viruses are exceedingly rare on the Mac. There are no known viruses for OSX.
    Trojans:
Promises one thing but delivers another. You can download a program but when you run the program, the contents of your computer are instead beamed to an underground data center in Kamchatka. If you obtain software from reliable sites, you are unlikely to get a Trojan horse.
    Adware:
Has an embedded advertising component - one that displays or downloads ads when you run the software. Some adware is legitimate, part of the price of using a free program such as the Iconfactory's Twitterrific or Eudora for example.
    Spyware:
Grabs data from your computer & ofen uses it for the purposes of evil, sending personal info to a baddie or when you're using your web browser, redirecting you to site you don't want to visit.
Mac users have nothing to worry about regarding Spyware & Adware because in order for the worse forms to work, the OS must allow unrestricted access to its more sensitive parts. The Mac OS doesn't.

  • How do I get rid of Chinese websites on Safari homepage

I was recently in Asia.  Now that I am in the States, I see that my Safari homepage has about six Chinese search engines on it.  I don't know how to get rid of them.  Any solutions?

this might be a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and do a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • IView used in middle part of SDN homepage?

    Hi,
I am actually a Basis Consultant, but have to build a basic prototype of a portal for demonstration purposes so this is propably a very basic developemnt question:
What iView is being used in the middle part of the SDN homepage to display the news items?
(The News iView used in the standard Home role in my portal only gives me the headings of the news articles in and you then have to click on it to get anymore info on the specific story)
    Thanks!
    Adriaan

    Hello Adriaan
A way to recreate what SDN has on their Home page (the News iView) would be to create a KM Navigation iView that points to the folder your News items are in, and then develop a custom XML form to display the list of News items the way you'd like to see them.
    See <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/ee639033-0801-0010-0883-b2c76b18583a">How To Create XML Forms</a> for a step-by-step guide.
    Hope this helps,

  • Start Firefox and homepage is not displayed; cannot navigate back to previously viewed pages using back or forward arrows; bookmarks toolbar not available on start-up though selected in options menu.

    1. Start firefox and my homepage is not displayed--there is no webpage displayed on initial startup. A homepage is listed in the options menu. In order to see homepage I need to manually press the home icon to the right of the search box.
    2. I am not capable of using the navigation arrows to the left of the address bar to navigate to previously viewed webpages. The arrows are present but are gray. Is there a setting in the security tab of the options menu that disables the navigation arrows for security purposes (i.e. not remembering webpages or cookies, etc.)?
    3. Though the bookmark toolbar is selected in the options menu, the bookmarks toolbar is not visible when starting firefox. Instead there is a red firefox toolbar located at the upper left of the screen. In order to view the bookmarks toolbar I need to go into the options menu and de-select the bookmarks toolbar (causes the red firefox toolbar to disappear) and then re-select the bookmarks toolbar.
Any information to help correct these issues is greatly appreciated.
    Mike

''framerotblues'' suggestion worked for me. I was having the following problems after 10.0 update:
    >No back/forward buttons.
    >Nothing in address bar.
    >Bookmark toolbar would not automatically load. Even though it was checked as a toolbar to view, I had to uncheck and check it again every time I closed/opened Firefox.
    >Could not access add-ons. Neither through menu toolbar nor using ctrl-shift-a
Restarted Firefox with add-ons disabled (help->restart with add-ons disabled). Removed ''Facebook Disconnect'' from add-ons. Restarted and everything seems to be working.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Running Windows 7 on Dell laptop, Yahoo is set as homepage, but Firefox start page always appears first. Help!

Recently, I downloaded the latest Adobe Reader update. I am not sure if it is related to the problem. For years, I've run Mozilla Firefox and I prefer it to IE. Suddenly, I find that after booting-up, my homepage has been "hijacked" to show the Mosilla Firefox start page, even though my control panel shows my homepage to be yahoo. ( I DID select Yahoo.) How can I get rid of Mozilla Firefox wanting to show itself FIRST? This always happens, starting just in the past two days or so. It's as if Mozilla Firefox has decided: "Yes, you chose Yahoo for your homepage, but I don't care. I want you to be shown OUR page before anything else." It defeats the purpose of selecting a homepage. I'd welcome a solution to this problem!

Just to be sure: In the preferences you do have ''"Show my homepage" ''enabled parallel to the yahoo URL visible in the box?

  • IWeb to Homepage

I am so confused with iWeb and Homepage. I have been posting to my homepage for a few years. Should I transfer these pictures to iWeb? How? Then send out new address? Can you set up a counter? How do I choose different designs? Should I figure homepage is not used anymore.

I am also confused I just created a web sight with my
new I life 06 but I don't know what the purpose of a
    homepage is for?
    Imac 5
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)
The purpose of homepage offered as a part of .mac is to create a simple personal website at .mac based on a collection of templates and layouts offered by Apple. iWeb essentially does the same thing.
The difference is iWeb runs on the mac you are sitting in front of, and homepage runs on .mac servers. Theoretically iWeb provides better ease of use because it is a regular mac app like iPhoto, Safari, iMovie, etc.
If you haven't used homepage from .mac, don't have a .mac membership then you probably don't care about it and should continue to work with iWeb.
Last time I checked homepage didn't have a practical way to do blogging. Theoretically iBlog solved that problem, but the integration with homepage was about as bad as that between homepage and iWeb. Which is to say their was none, but you could use both of them anyhow to publish to your .mac homepage. Anyway iWeb has blogging as a template, if that sort of thing appeals to you.

  • Homepage kept change to other website

i am using mac os x 10.8.5 and firefox 25.0.
i set my homepage to http://i.firefoxchina.cn/, but it always direct me to http://www.hao123.com/.
even if i open http://i.firefoxchina.cn/ straightly from the browser.
i tried many ways listed in internet, but it doesn't work at all.
    thanks

Why Does My Homepage Keep Changing and How Do I Make it Stop?
You log on to your computer and open your internet browser and to your dismay your homepage has changed. You change it back but the next time you log on, it’s changed again. What you are experiencing is called browser hijacking. Browser hijacking is a form of malware, or spyware, that changes an internet browsers setting including homepage. Created for advertising and commercial purposes, the malware gathers information about websites visited and sends it through the internet to the malware writer. The malware can also redirect a user to a specific website thereby increasing the number of hits the site receives. This increases advertising costs for the website and profits the webmaster.
    What Browser Hijacking Software Does
Unlike regular viruses that spread, browser hijacking malware must be installed and the installation can be done with or without the user’s consent. This happens during three common internet activities:
Pop-ups – Hijackers install code on pop-up ads and when the user clicks on the ad, the browser hijacking software is installed. This happens without a set up wizard or warning.
    Downloading freeware or shareware
Silent installation during a reputable installation – Like a parasite, some malware depend on its host for installation.
    How to Remove Spyware
Violating a user’s privacy and tracking browsing habits are just a couple of example of the many consequences of browser hijacking. The internet user may experience unstableness, extra windows popping up, redirection of surfing, and new bookmarks that were not previously selected by the user. Overall, the internet becomes a nightmare for the user and if’s the first time dealing with this type of spyware, they may not know how to remove it from their computer.
There are several steps to remove the program from the infected computer:
Task ManagerShut down the browser. If the browser is out of control, access the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+ Alt+ Delete and clicking on the browser process in the Processes tab.
Disable pop ups. Typically under Tools and Options in the web browser is the setting for pop ups.
Run an anti-spyware program. Spyware cannot be removed with anti-virus software; it must be removed with anti-spyware tools. If you do not have an anti-spyware program, look for a program that includes a real time monitoring tool that will prevent known risks and unauthorized system changes.
Review for unwanted programs in Add and Remove Programs in your operating system.
Your homepage change isn’t only annoying, it’s also a sign that your computer has been infected with a browser hijacking malware. This type of malware spies on the user by tracking browsing habits and it causes multiple system problems on the computer itself. Malware can be removed easily and effectively with an anti-spyware program. Because it installs itself in the computer, anti-virus programs can neither identify nor remove spyware. Selecting a spyware program with a real time monitoring tool, like PC Whiz, will prevent some additional attacks.
Download PC Whiz if you are experiencing spyware related homepage errors.

  • Why wont Safari load my Yahoo homepage anymore ?

Suddenly about 5days ago, Safari suddenly stopped loading my homepage, uk.yahoo.com - which has been my Homepage for years.
I thought it was perhaps a Yahoo problem, but apparently not, as Safari loads any other page from my favourites etc without any hitch, meaning its clearly not an ISP problem either.
I did find a thread that suggested un-ticking the 'Restore Windows' box in the Genral section in System Preferences, (not Safari Preferences), but I cant see
a General tab in System Preferences ?
Additionally, I have deleted Safari, and re-installed it, but problem still exists.
    I'm running OS X 10.5.8   and Safari version 5.0.6
    Any ideas please ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
