Hooking GNOME (and GDM) into initrd

Hello, Arch users!
My name is Kenny Strawn. I'm sure you've seen me on LinuxQuestions.org, but I haven't been getting much help there with my issues with Arch, so I decided to take it here where, hopefully, it will get more attention.
My problem is this: I was able to make a custom Arch installation from Ubuntu by unsquashfs-ing the Arch CD image directly to an external hard drive (and its mount point), chrooting into the drive to install my needed/wanted packages (such as GNOME, GDM, Shotwell, LibreOffice, Screenlets, Rhythmbox, and others), rebuilding the initrd (which involved passing hooks to a config file, which is [hopefully] what I need to do to get GDM to start), and installing/updating GRUB to the SimpleTech 500GB external drive. I did have a problem getting Arch to boot, but hopefully I got that fixed by rebuilding the initrd.
Here's my problem: I can't get GDM to start, even if dbus is running. The error message is something like:
***(gdm-binary)***: /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
Just what hooks do I need to pass to mkinitcpio to get D-Bus, GDM, and GNOME to run at startup? So far, I haven't gotten any help on LQ with this issue. I certainly know Linux, but am new to Arch.

As eldragon said, dbus and gdm can both be simply added to the Daemons towards the end of /etc/rc.conf
Or you could set up ~/.xinitrc and /etc/inittab and have gdm start that way.   dbus will always need to be a daemon in rc.conf though.
Arch is a little different than a number of distros in that it uses the BSD style init system.   You should really read over the beginners guide, so you have an understanding of how the basic system is laid out.

  • [SOLVED] Remove completely Gnome and GDM (without messing MATE)

    Hi everybody,
I wanted to try the new Gnome on my laptop and I installed it following the wiki with the command:
    sudo pacman -S gnome gnome-shell gnome-extra gdm
I really like it (both the "standard" and the classic interfaces), but unfortunately it makes my laptop quite slow,
therefore I would like to remove it leaving only MATE on my desktop.
I noticed that Gnome partially conflicts with my MATE desktop (for example in a Gnome Classic session I would expect Nautilus
to be the default file browser, instead caja is opened), therefore I would like to know if there is some safe way to remove
all the installed packages without messing out with MATE.
    Thanks in advance!

Ok I think I found out on my own (searching on google send me to an Arch forum thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117144, but I was looking for it in the wrong section).
    Sorry for the pointless post.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome and gdm is not themed after reinstall

    Hi all.
I messed up my Arch install yesterday, so today I reinstalled my system. I normally use Gnome, so I installed everything I normally install. (only things not installed from group gnome is epiphany and gnome-termial, as I use lxterminal instead)
But as I reboot into GDM I find myself surprised: normally GDM will display the green leaf background on me, and after I log in this will be the desktop background. However, this is not the case now. GDM presents a plain black background, and what's more, when I try to change the background in gnome-appearance-preferences, the background image does not change! The only changes I get are the background colors belonging to each background. What has happened since the last time I installed??
    Thank you for any help
EDIT: Seems a missing HAL was the problem. Even though GDM no longer depends on HAL, installing HAL and adding it to DAEMONS in rc.conf solved everything for me.

Problem solved. I took gdm out of rc.conf, and uncommented it in in /etc/inittab. Then reinstalled glib2. After that it worked like a charm. Some warning message about wicd not starting D-Bus something, but I can deal with that later. Now typing in Chromium instead of elinks. Mission accomplished. Thanks community!

  • [SOLVED]problem with GNOME and wireless connection

    Hi!
I'm new to Arch Linux, and have run into a few problems after installation.
My computer is a HP Pavilion dv6000.
I installed using "xf86-video-nouveau" driver, as i understand this is the best choice for "Nvidia Geforce Go 7400". Is it?
I also installed the complete "gnome", "gnome-extra", "gdm", "gnome-tweak-tool" and "gnome-shell-extensions" packages, but when I boot into gdm login, it automatically starts in fallback mode (the one who has "applications" and "places" in the top panel instead of "activities". What am I doing wrong here?
Btw, when I go to System settings - system info - graphics, there are three lines; "Driver", "Experience", "Forced Fallback Mode". "Driver" line only says driver, and is blank after. "Experience" line says "Fallback".  "Forced Fallback Mode" is set to OFF.
Also, I cannot figure out how to get my wireless network set up correctly.
When i open System Settings - Network, I get an error saying System network is not compatible with this version.
Any help with this woill be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!
-dri driver worked. But if the NVIDIA driver works better, I should probably consider using that one.
I tried to install the NVIDIA binary driver, but when i tried to run
    # chmod -X NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10.run
    # ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10.run
I got a message telling me to close x first.
    How can I do this?
Ho ho ho buddy, I see you're trying to install the nvidia driver from the website. Have another look here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvidia#Installing
the drivers are available through pacman Installing the driver through pacman will automatically take care of removing things that conflict and installing things you need to ge t the NVIDIA driver to work.
NVIDIA _might_ be better, 3d support in nouveau is still somewhat experimental and nouveau doesn't have all the power management features yet. It'll be something to experiment with. Have a good read of the NVIDIA and NOUVEAU wiki articles

As for the wireless issue, I googled around a bit and found that the driver I need is ilw3945.
    I added this to /etc/rc.conf:
    DAEMONS=(...ilw3945...)
as it seems the drivers are included in udev.
However, when i try to open System Settings -> Network, it says
The system network services are not compatible with this version.
So I'm getting a little restless to find out what I can do to get the wireless network configurated properly, and how I can do it.
    Any ideas?
First I think you've fundamentally misunderstood something. Drivers for linux come in module form, not in DAEMON form. A DAEMON is an application that runs in the background (sound server, network service, etc etc).
ilw3945 would have to be added to your MODULES section in /etc/rc.conf if that is the module you need.
humor me and post the output of this command:
    $ lspci

  • Can't login after fresh installing gnome using gdm 3.2 [SOLVED]

I don't know if this topic was already solved, I hope someone can help me about this. I have a fresh install of arch linux (just yesterday) and installed gnome and gnome-extra packages. As usual, I go with the procedure of editing my .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session), rc.conf (...dbus networkmanager...), inittab (runlvl 5, x:5......gdm). After a reboot, gdm screen appeared, I can't find my account, then there were two choices, "Sign in" and "Not listed..."). I clicked Not listed, then entered my user and password, after that, it responded: Authentication failure/failed... or something like that. I tried it again and it's the same. Temporarily, I'm using startx or slim (depends on my mood). Can anyone help me?
    here's my gdm's 0.log and 0-greeter.log respectively:

    look in /etc/pam.d/gdm-password
in arch and in general >= 1000 are  normal users, < 1000 system users
is that how it works? can i change it from 100 to 1000 or just make a new one?
    anyways i'll look to it.

  • Not able to start Gnome via GDM

I have just installed Archlinux on an old laptop (HP ZV5000), which I want to bring back to life as there is always a long queue to us the other PC in the family
Everything went smooth, except the last step: when I try to login via GDM, the screen becomes gry (as if it is entering the Gnome environment, but then it is stuck there.
Strange thing is that If I disable GDM and run Gnome with startx from the command line, then everything is working fine
Currently I am anyway using the laptop that way, but I still feel uncomfortable as this is not the way it should work
I have tried to ssh to the machine while stuck into the grey screen and this is what I've got while checking the status of the GDM service:
    # systemctl status gdm.service
    gdm.service - GNOME Display Manager
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/gdm.service; disabled)

Does anybody have a clue on what the problem could be?
    Thanks a lot

    Sorry for the late reply.
Yes, I did, but there are no differences between the Xorg.0.log that is created when I (unsuccessfully) start Gnome via GDM or when I start it with startx. There is an error in both cases, but Gnome fails only in one of those two.
    This is what I get

  • Resolution decreases/Font enlargers and GDM hangs on driver install

Hello archers, forgive my newness to ArchLinux and Linux itself but here's my question.
I followed the beginners guide but it seems my system just refuses proprietary drivers for some reason. I can only maintain a stable DE and resolution when I install nouveau driver. I own a GTX 460m so I attempted to install nvidia-96xx-dkms. Why? I'm almost positive the nouveau video driver is impeding me from playing dota 2 as I can do this on my Windows dual boot without lag. Problem is when I rebooted from installing the drivers and gnome I am greeted with the following statements upon enabling gdm:
    [    OK    ]   Stopped Getty on tty1.
                      Starting GNOME Display Manager...
Stopping User Manager for UID 0...
[    OK    ]   Stopped User Manager for UID 0.
    [    OK    ]   Removed slice user-0.slice.
[    OK    ]   Started GNOME Display Manager.
                      Starting Accounts Service...
                      Starting Authorization Manager
[    OK    ]   Started Authorization Manager
[    OK    ]   Started Accounts Service
-------------- Here I wait a minute and a half followed by this: ---------------------------
[    TIME   ]  Timed out waiting for device sys-subsystem-net-devices-PI.device.
[ DEPEND ] Dependency failed for Automatic wireless network con...etctl profiles.
    [    OK     ] Reached target Multi-User System.
[    OK     ] Reached target Graphical Interface.
[    OK     ] Reached target Network.
This follows an infinite hang that goes nowhere. How do I fix this problem? My shell is bloated and my DE won't load. I've repeated my steps about 4 times to the point i've written each command out on install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To bring this thread to a close here is what I discovered. It would seem that the resolution problem I kept having with my console was NORMAL as indicated in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … resolution. The problem I had with the nvidia driver not giving a mouse and locking up had to do with no configuring after installing. This was quickly remedied with a simple command:
    nvidia-xconfig
Unfortunately this stuggle was in vain as this still imposed a considerable performance hit in regular gnome activities from booting and startup into the DE to lag in hitting the windows key for arranging the open windows. The nvidia driver gave me a significant boost in rendering of dota 2 but still contained lag even in offline matches unreliant upon the network. Terribly disappointing as when I dual boot back into Windows I don't have any type of rendering lag. Either its configured terribly wrong or linux is imposing more resources for the same gaming experience.
Needless to say I reverted back to nouveau. Hope this log will help anyone else struggling through this type of driver problem.

  • Hlep with gnome and xorg

I installed xorg, and gnome and gnome-extras ok.
When I run startx it takes me to a screen with 3 windows, xterm login and xterm, then i run gnome-session, it boots me into gnome, but with some problems.

I think GDM won't let you log in as root because it's generally a bad idea to run your whole DE as root.  Try logging in as a normal user and using su in a terminal - if that doesn't work then you have indeed forgotten your password . . .
If you have lost your passworrd, I think if you boot into single user mode (put 'single' at the end of your kernel line in Grub) you can change it without needing the old one.

  • Arch, Gnome, and half - missing letters

Greetings. I've installed Arch yesterday. CD is from Tuesday. It was updated each day. Gnome, GDM, X installed yesterday evening.
Today i installed xf86-video-intel and booted into gnome. Yay! i've logged in, but then i've saw the following situation:
half things are missing. If i go to gnome-tweak-tool and fix it, it works as charm - fully visibile words, etc - untill I reboot. I've tried everything, from VESA drivers on.
Anybody has idea what to do? Thanks for suport.

I had the same problem, when you press the icon for assistance and resize the font and then change first in the list and return to the same place I work all looks good, but it bored me, I always install all fonts, put patches for X11 detect and nothing worked.
I solved installing Xfce, I've always been a fan of Gnome, but I'm very happy with the performance of xfce despite being lightweight and fast they can run many applications because it is also based on gtk:) .... I leave you a screenshot of my desktop ....
But this post will continue to monitor to see if anyone can give the solution to our problem.

  • Switching between VTs kills Xorg and GDM restarts

    Hi,
since yesterday I noticed some sort of severe problem of my system.  I am still trying to locate the reason why this all happens.
My problem looks like this: Every time I switch from X to a VT everything looks fine. But once I want to switch back to X, it dies completely and GDM restarts.
So far so bad, first I thought GDM is creating this and downgraded it to 2.22. That didn't help, so back up to date.
But I activated its debug modus to receive this output:

Once I switch back, GDM reloads and I get the same output with GDM stating nothing why this happened.
I looked through all log files without finding anything obvious. My problem is, that I am not sure if it is GDM doing this or some buggy configuration of a programme doing rubbish...
Some helpful advice will be nice.
    Regards,
    Simon

    Problem solved temporarily:
I downgraded all X.org packages related to the recent update for xorg-server 1.9. Since then GDM doesn't seam to crash. Otherwise I noted that 1.9 is not much of a matured release yet. I read many instability issues here.
Btw, would a mod like to move this thread to update issues? This thread will better fit in that section.
    Thanks

  • Gnome and KDE 4.1 without mixing?

I'm running Gnome and love it, but wanted to give KDE 4.1 a chance so I installed it too. When logging in (GDM) I choose whether I want to run Gnome or KDE 4.1,  but when I boot KDE the kde menus are full Gnome stuff, and when I boot Gnome, the menus are full of KDE stuff. It's a mix I don't like. Either I run Gnome or KDE.
Is there a way to stop the Gnome menus scanning the KDE apps and the KDE menus to stop scanning the Gnome apps?
Besides that, when I'm in Gnome and open a nautilus bookmark from the "Places" menu, Konquerer starts up happily and makes me think, "What a mess. Is this the way it's supposed to work?"
If I want to run Gnome only and KDE only, do I need to make a dual boot with two separate Arch installations?

The menu "problem" is due to both desktops using the standard menu item location (Freedesktop.org, I believe defines this).  If you want completely separate, you don't have to dual boot with two separate Arch installs, just create a new user and make a shared data location that your KDE and Gnome user can access.  For example:
/home/thunderogg could be thunderogg, your Gnome user
/home/kthunderogg could be kthunderogg, your KDE user
Create a new /home/shared folder with permissions for both users and save your documents there.  That's the only way that I know of to have both installed and not have a menu mess.

  • Streaming audio from my IPAD to my Apple TV from Rhapsody application.  when Apple TV go into Screen Saver mode, about 5 minutes after that it stops playing the Audio Stream and goes into Sleep mode.

I am Streaming audio from my IPAD to my Apple TV from Rhapsody application.  when Apple TV go into Screen Saver mode, about 5 minutes after that it stops playing the Audio Stream and goes into Sleep mode.  I am using the Optical Out from the Apple TV to my receiver, the Apple TV is hard Wired to the Network, the IPAD is Wirelessly attached to the network (it continues to play the Audio Stream).  When the Apple TV is turned back on it resumes playing once I manual select it for output from the IPAD.  All device are on current releases of software.  I have no Video hooked up to the Apple TV.  How do I correct this?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Microsoft 4000 Keyboard And GDM

    Hi
I have installed Arch Linux base system during which I edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-keyboard.conf and my keyboard worked fine, I then installed gdm and  edited the 10-evdev.conf file and on rebooting the computer my keyboard settings have been badly rearranged and I can not find many keys, for instance pipe  |  which is extremely annoying. in dmesg There seems to be 4 Microsoft keyboards with input numbers 2,0,3, an 1, in that order. I read in the wiki Keyboard Configuration in Xorg that Gnome overrides Xkb and whilst not having Gnome installed GDM must be doing the same. The evdev file looks the same as the 10-keyboard file. Can I stop GDM overriding the xorg settings?
In the Xorg log file the keyboard seems to be set up fine then I added an old Logitech ps2 mouse dev/input/mouse0, (I got tired of changing my only usb mouse from Arch desktop to Mint netbook all the time) and rebooted and then  I get an EE line:
    Error loading keymap /var/lib/xkb/server-0.xkm
I have a wireless connection on the Arch computer but no desktop or browser yet and I do not know how to cut and paste parts of these files so they can been seen on the forum. I am using the Mint netbook to write this
I have tried installing gpm but I can't download it from the mirrors.
    Thanks
    Rob (First Post)

If you have Microsoft 4000 keyboard KU0462 then this gives you the right configuration:-
setxkbmap -model microsoft4000 -layout gb -variant intl
Now to try and make it permanent....
I think the example in the keyboard wiki is misleading because of the commas, they are part of the name of the options not part of the command. I have not had a computer with Windows on it since 2006 but I like their hardware.
