Hooking Up To Car

Anyone having trouble hooking up the touch IPod to a factory installed Ipod dock..The new Infiniti's (2008) will not accept the IPod touch. Says that there are no songs.

It might be your iPod that's the problem. I have an Alpine after-market system (about 2 1/2 years old) in my car that stopped playing my 2nd generation iPod after awhile, but it would play other 2nd generations, and even my new iPod Touch. You might want to consider doing a full restore on your Touch, then trying it out again in your car. If that doesn't work, you may want to double-check with Infiniti, and then try emailing Apple support. Hope this helps!
Oh, and one final warning...my system not only played the iPod, but it charged it as well (which I think is pretty standard for car dock systems). Granted, that was great, but it ended up killing my iPod faster because, according to Apple, the iPod battery has only so many charges it can take before pretty much dying. Anywho, good luck with everything!

  • IPod Audio too soft when hooked up to car???

iPod touch audio is soft when I hook it up to my car audio jack.  I have to turn up the car volume almost to max! I have checked the volume level settings on the iPod...no change?

You should post your question over in the iPod Touch forum (this is iPhone).

  • Hook iPod to car speakers.

I've never done this before, but my friend is trying to get his iPod hooked up to his car speakers. If it helps, the car in question is a 2006 Toyota Corolla LE. There's a multi-disc CD player.
    ~ Thanks in advance.

get an iPod car player. They are usually a little on the pricey side...i saw one for $40.00 at Lowe's here in Texas, but what you do is hook it to your car's cigarette lighter. Once it is powered up, plug in iPod and it will transmit on a radio frequency (the better, more expensive ones transmit on several optional frequencies to prevent interference by local radio stations) Simply tune your car's radio to the frequency and it will play. Then you can blast it with speakers.

  • Ipod nano hook up to car stereo

Does anyone know if there is a direct connect hook up to a car stereo with a nano. I have an iplug connection but cannot find anything that will hookup to it.

Not all car stereos have RCA input jacks. Some have 1/8" stereo miniplug inputs. If none exists on your unit, you can search for "auxiliary input adapters" for your car stereo.

  • Bluetooth for playing music in a car

I just bought a jabra which is a handsfree bluetooth device that has a speaker, and mounts to your visor so you can enjoy handsfree talk. But this device also has a fm transmitor so I can play my songs through my car stereo (or listen to conversation thru)...this is all via bluetooth. So I just walk into my truck and away I go...Im tranmitting to my speakers. Problem is...the fm transmitor *** butt. And though some people may be happy with it...Ive invested too much money into my audio to allow static to blow my speakers.
So...my question is...is there a bluetooth device that you can use for handsfree talking that hooks into your car via aux cables. OMG....if there is I would be so thrilled. The jabra is an awewsome concept...but the transmitor is not strong (and if someone suggest a new station I will freak out). But the same device using aux cables would be something everyone should have.

    I bought one of these --> http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Ericsson-MBR-100-Bluetooth-Receiver/dp/B000NWB0J0/ref =sr16?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1259084155&sr=8-6
It works well, but there's no volume control on the unit, and it disables the volume control on the iPhone - so you wouldn't want to use it with headphones. For playing through a car stereo, it works just fine.

  • MAJOR DESIGN FLAW?:  ----  IPAD in car connected to 12V outlet

i have my usb power cord plugged into a device which converts the 12V to usb power.
When I do this the IPAD works fine except for audio output. There is a loud buzzing on the audio.
When I play audio and it is not hooked up to car usb, no buzzng.
Since very cheap electronics can use car power to produce clean sound, why does not the $800+ 64GB 3G do it?
Seems like a major design flaw if I cannot plug it into the car and listen to music during long trips.

One way to suppress engine noise/digital hash - which is very common and getting worse in cars as more computers, upwards of 100 in some cars as well a multiple networks connecting them in - is to place a ferrite choke on the cable powering the device. Some USB cable have them built in. They look like a cylinder perhaps 2 inches long and 3/4 inch in diameter molded onto the cable.
They can also be externally used which is probably the only way with the USB to iPad connector cable.
Radio Shack has them see [*this link*|http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3012599] for example. Their web site says they are available in most stores.

  • Car stereo - iPod hookup help

I just bought a new car and I'm wanting to put a new stereo in it. I want to make sure I get the right one for me. I want to be able to hook up my iPod to the stereo. But there's so many different choices like: 1.) aux outlet 2.) direct hook up (where you put the iPod directly into a iPod slot on the stereo) 3.) USB port...And I'm sure there are many others. Could someone help and really explain in detail all the different types of iPod hook ups for car stereos? And which do you recommend? Thank You!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Here are the differences:
Aux - not digital sound, doesn't charge iPod, can't control iPod on the stereo.
USB - not only can use iPod, but other USB storage devices (thumb drive, portable hard drives). Usually gives you full control of the player on the unit and can charge the unit. Some units have a USB jack in the front of the unit.
iPod direct hook up - similar to USB but only for iPod. Only found from the back of any unit that needs to be run out from somewhere else.
Best thing to do with the units that do USB is take your iPod with you and plug them into the units that have front USB jacks and see the controls.
Keep in mind, this around the time that new models start to come out, so you may want to wait for a month or so to see the new units that will be available. A lot of the new units that will be coming out will be less expensive for USB and/or iPod controls.
    Hope this helps.

  • Connector Won't Fit

Before I bought the iPhone 4 I was using the 3GS iPhone. I have a cable that is installed in my car connected to the car stereo to play music from the iPhone/iPod. I'm using the 30 pin connector on the bottom and not the earphone jack. Besides playing the music I can control the iPhone from the steering wheel controls. This all worked with the last iPhone. When I bought the new iPhone I bought the "bumper" to protect it. The cut out in the bumper will only accommodate the Apple connector and not the 3rd party connector hooked to the car stereo. I know of the company Cable Jive and was wondering if their connector on their jumper cable is the same size as the Apple connector so it will fit through the bumber. To make matters worse I'm using that Firewire to USB power converter dongle that Apple forced us into a few years back to be able to charge the battery in the iPhone. My question is does anyone make a jumper that will physically fit and as a bonus do the power conversion from Firewire to USB. And no I don't want to get handy with a dremmel tool carving up the case so don't suggest that.
    Any help would be appreciated.

OK everyone back from vacation so sorry for the delay. I received the dock Xtender not Extender (older version) from Jive. It did not work. The lady who I spoke with on the phone at Jive "thought it would now work" with the new Apple bumper but I don't think she was part of their technical staff, rather I think she was in customer service. Also I still had to use my USB to Firewire converter to charge the iPhone. This is something they could have added as functionality to the cable but didn't. They tout the Xtender as the end all be all loaded with features but as I found out the product was a disappointment. So as a last ditch effort I got out the file and Xacto knife to make the bumper hole connector bigger. With my very sharp knife this exercise met with disasterous results when I cut through one of the edges turning the bumper into a $40.00 throwaway.
On a different note, notice how the bumper is the only case that Apple sells for the iPhone 4 while other stores have other case options when they sell the iPhone 4. This was not the "case" with previous iPhones as they offered lots of options. Guess now that they are in the case business they don't want any competition at their stores. With Consumer Reports's don't buy recommendation on the iPhone 4 because of the antenna issue Apple will probably have to give away the bumper to take care of the problem.
Getting back to my original issue I ended up buying the lean case by iFrogz at Best buy that has the bottom wide open and will accommodate any size connector. The case is pretty good and will get the job done. I'll probably trade this case out for the Otter box when it becomes available for the iPhone 4 as my wife who's phone it is (ya I know what a nice guy) is a clutz on steroids.
    Well happy case hunting everyone!

  • Can I Stream Video via Bluetooth?

Wondering if there is a way to stream video from my itouch to a video system for my car via bluetooth or other wireless method?

What about trying to use appleTV in my vehicle? In theory I would be able to send video to the appleTV device that would then be hooked into my car video system. I basically want a wireless network setup in my vehicle minus any actual internet connection. Is this possible?

  • Frozen screens - iPod with dock connector

My ipod freezes up whenever it is disconnected from the computer. The Ok to disconnect doesn't go away. If I perform a reset, the apple logo doesn't disappear. I have restored my ipod many times to no avail. I can synch songs to it, and even play them off the ipod when its attatched to the computer if i use (gasp!) realplayer. I can put it in disk mode and hook it up to the computer, itunes seems to think the ipod is ok. I'm not gonna spend 250 bucks to fix this thing, can anyone help? It seems like it still works, it just hangs up on something.

I am having the same issue and was hoping that I might find a cure or the reason behind this prob. I have an ipod w/ dock connector, it works fine when in use with my inmotion speaker system (with ac, not sure if anything happens on battery), when I bring it to the car and use the ipod hooked up to car stereo using a aux jack on stereo, the ipod will play for 1,2,xx # of songs and then shut down. I do have a power source for the ipod in the car, using the 12v/cig lighter outlet which will powerup the 'pod, but creates a whine that is annoying. At first I thougt it might be the drastic change from use in a warm to cold enviornment?
Anyone with any ideas as to what is causing this??

  • How can I recreate ArchLinux's installation ramdisk?

    Hi,
I'm on a project where I developed my own custom ramdisk so I can automate the installation procedure for Arch. Currently, I have a script that takes Arch's initrd.img, and adds stuff to it (my scripts).
Now, I would like to be able to create the ramdisk from scratch (not requiring Arch's image as a base). Therefore, I would like to get the script(s) (if any) that ArchLinux devs use to create Arch's installation ramdisk. There are some things I want to change (some busybox options and stuff) so I really need this.
On cvs I can see a nice laid build system for creating an installation image using the new cpio method. But I can't find anything related to the old initrd system (even when using the RELEASE_0_7_2 CVS tag).
Also, I'm interested in the initcpio system since it seems way more simple to create Arch's installation image. Even more, I already saw the archboot package that would allow me to recreate the initcpio that will be used for installing the upcoming Arch release. I'm going to play with this, but I'm going to stay with the old initrd system until Arch's next release.
And regarding the cpio system, I have a doubt. How does the ramdisk environment change when using cpio over old initrd? I noticed that busybox is no longer used. Is using busybox an option? Would it make sense?
    Thanks

V01D wrote:Ok, now I'm getting things a little better. I think that my best option is to use busybox using initcpio (don't you know how I can ask about the scripts you use for the old initrd? even if I don't use that initrd, I would like to see how the filesystem inside the initrd is created; there are programs like dhcpcd that I don't know from where to take (my own system?)).
Well, the scripts would/should work with either system.  Problem is that the initrd scripts are a bit lacking.  The mkinitcpio scripts are included in /lib/initcpio/* - check under the "hooks" directory.  You don't need dhcpcd.  This is already accounted for with the 'net' hook, which is part of mkinitcpio.
    mkinitcpio -H net
for help with the net hook, and how to use it.
V01D wrote:You say I should use static busybox or with klibc. Can't I just use uClibc? (NOTE: I get a little confused about what uClibc is... I see libc6 on the ramdisk, is that uClibc?)
Both uClibc and klibc have similar goals.  Both are mini C libraries, meant to be used for small systems.  The difference is that uClibc is meant for embedded systems, and klibc is meant specifically for early-userspace.  You *can* use a pure uClibc system, but you will lose all the tools that klibc provides (ls /usr/lib/klibc/bin/*).  Admittedly, some of these are replaced by busybox, but others (which are important) may not be.  However, they should all compile under uClibc.
V01D wrote:is the new cpio system just a new way of handling file and a RAM based filesystem? or is it a deeper change compared to initrd? the whole thing about kinit confuses me a little... And I can't find much documentation about this. I mean, I saw an option on busybox's config regarding something about init and initramfs, but I don't get much about it.
In other words, how much would I have to change If I'd create a cpio with all files that are present on the initrd?
The difference between initrd and initramfs, from a consumer's persepctive, is minimal.  Instead of /linuxrc, you want to use /init as the script name.  If you were to convert the existing initrd, you would just have to rename that.
I need to stress, though, that the linuxrc for the old initrd is very very limited.  Reusing that is going to cause alot of headaches and cost you development time.  The init script and hooks that are part of mkinitcpio are much more generalized, and the system, as a whole, is hugely open to "add ins".  Maybe it would help if you explained exactly what you want to do, and I can tell you how much work it would take to do it both ways?
V01D wrote:regarding any extra program I want to add (think of the BINARY='' option of mkinitcpio), how would this be handled if I use busybox? will it see that I use uClibc? Or will it try to add klibc?
klibc is added by the 'base' hook, which is why I stated earlier that you can rewrite your own custom base hook to take care of that, or even removed base altogether.  There are only a few minor issues there.
V01D wrote:Can I add any program to the ramdisk and expect it to work (assuming it doesn't depends on any other library but libc)? I mean, does a program have to be compiled specially to be used with uClibc or klibc?
No, copying random programs to the ramdisk will fail.  You need to recompile them against klibc or uClibc, or link them statically.  You can not interchange C libraries.
I really think it would help if you describe what you're trying to do.  It sounds like you want busybox simply for convienance, and are going to cause yourself a mess of trouble just to add it.

  • Post removal issue

    Hi,
I posted a message the other day in the "integrating the iPhone into your digital life" forum inquiring about car kits available for the product. This seemed like a legitimate question, but I just got a mail telling me that it had been deleted from the forum "as it contained feedback or feature requests." The intriguing thing is that the mail I received is addressed to "Gary", which is not my name. The first reply to my post certainly did contain feature requests, so I'm wondering whether my post was deleted in error. (I wasn't paying attention closely enough to tell you whether the guy who replied is called Gary, and now the whole thread has been deleted.)
I'm curious to know whether this was a mistake on your part. If so, no big deal. Mistakes happen, and the answers to my post anyway seemed to indicate that there aren't any good car kits available yet for the iPhone, so I'll hang tough and wait.
If this wasn't an error, I'd appreciate some explanation as to what, exactly, was wrong with my post and what the purpose of the "iPhone in your digital life" forum is, if not to ask questions like "could you recommend a car kit to use with my iPhone?"
Not to be too whiny, but you might also want to consider including a) a reference to the post being deleted in your mail and b) some indication of where to turn if the post was deleted in error.
    Cheers,
    Matt
Complete text of my deleted post for reference:
I'm trying to figure out the right way to integrate the iPhone into my car. All the solutions I find seem to be Bluetooth based, which is totally uninteresting to me since I want to be able to listen to podcasts/music from the iPhone on my car stereo. I have a car stereo with aux input, and I have another with a CD changer that I could replace it with if that turned out to be the better solution. I also have a microphone already installed in my car and hooked up to a cradle for a Nokia phone of some sort (which was already in the car when I bought it).
So basically my dream solution would involve the following:
A cradle that I can plop the phone into when I get into my car.
Audio output hooked into my car stereo.
Audio input hooked into the mic on my sun visor.
A button on my steering wheel that does the same thing as the clicker on the iPhone headphones (i.e. pause and answer calls).
I'd certainly be prepared to put together something myself, but I'd like to figure out what the options are before jumping into this. Any suggestions?

Who among us has not addressed an email to the wrong person? CC'd the wrong person? Who has not made a mistake setting up an automated task? How many people here have nonsensically reported a post to the Hosts (and how many times have inexperienced Hosts deleted topics) either in their zeal to establish control of a forum, or because they did not fully understand the Terms of Use. Mistakes happen, sometimes more than one mistake is made at the same time....
Questions like yours are not against the ToU in my reading. Similar questions are asked regularly in every hardware forum. My guess is that in the recent purge of topics in the iPhone forum, your topic was swept out with one hundred or more other topics. The problem may be (even by my standards) that that forum was out of control from the iPhone's launch through to the period just after its first software update was released. There was a great effort by staff and members here to rein that forum in as it was creating many issues, not the least of which being AD's servers' performance.
I don't think there's a general lesson to be taken from your experience, and as you said, from the answers you saw before your topic was deleted, you learned the answer to your question. That's what AD is for.

  • Can't run database after upgrading to windows 7

    Hello,
Last week I had a perfectly running 11g database on my personal computer, but then I upgraded my OS from Vista to 7 (which is the final version, legal). After the upgrade, my database which was installed on an external HD can't seem to be started.
I tried running it with the administration tools, but it's not in the database section anymore. I also tried running it with SQL*PLUS, but when I try the startup command or just to connect I get ORA-12560 TNS: protocol adapter error.
I know it's hard to come up with a solution since Windows 7 is new, but I'd like to know where to look and what could cause this problem.
    Thanks

Oracle made the database software work with Vista. It calls intgernal stuff provided by Microsoft.
One of the big things about the upgrade to Windows 7 is that Microsoft changed how some internal stuff works. For some reason calling stuff differently doesn't always work - or worse, works in deviously dangerous ways.
If you build a motor to hook into the car with #12 bolts and the car manufacturer changes to #14 bolts, would you still expect it to fit properly?
You MAY be able to get it to work with the Windows 2008 version, but I weould not hold my breath.

  • Setting Up Mac Mini / iTunes Server Help

I have a new MacMini that I wanted to just leave on and use it as my iTunes media server for my various iDevices and ATV's.  I have an external Thunderbolt G-Drive attached to the MacMini with my movies, music, home videos and photos on it.  The MacMini will only be used for the purpose of streaming my media and nothing else.  The MacMini drive has nothing on it but whatever it came with the initial OS.  If anybody could provide me with any tips to keep this running as smooth and as fast as possible I would appreciate it.
This is what I have done so far.
I have a Cyberpower Smart App Sinewave UPS system connected to the MacMini.  This allowed me to set up in preferences an automatic smooth shut down of the MacMini in case of a power failure.  My router is also connected to the UPS system as well as the external drive.  I do have a small monitor attached to the MacMini that I can turn on to the proper HDMI input to work on the MacMini, so it is not set up as a headless system.
Tha MacMini is dircectly conected to my router via ethernet so the WiFi portion of the mini is not being used.
Do I need to turn of the wifi via preferences manually or does the ethernet hook up take care of that an I don't need to do that?
Is there a way to get iTunes to automatically launch after the MacMini reboots?
How can I handle updates automatically to keep the MacMini up to date with minimum if any interference from me?
I know I can also schedule an automatic reboot at certan intervals but not sure where to set this up nor if its needed?
Should I set up the MacMini to Never Sleep Mode or let it put the hard drive to sleep?
I know some people have had issues with the hard drive not waking from sleep mode hence iTunes will not work properly.  This has been via firewire hook ups and I am not sure if that would happen via thunderbolt or not.  If there is anything else I can do via hardware or software that I am missing let me know.
    Thanks

The MacBook Pro is sometimes at work, or otherwise "off" in the house. I don't like having to go and turn it on, just to access my itunes library.
That's one downside of AppleTV2 - cheap, small and low power usage but lack of onboard storage means you need a computer on for streaming, which is less than ideal when you have a laptop.
So I've been thinking... maybe a mac mini is the solution? I could set it up near the TV, leave it idle and access media when I need it.
That would certainly work. I have both the current Mac Mini with HDMI and an AppleTV hooked up to the TV - I either use wireless keyboard/mouse or AirMouse on my iPad to control the Mini. You don't necessarily need the Mini connected to the TV but I do in order to do things AppleTV can't.
Right now all of my itunes is on my MacBook Pro. If I wanted to copy over the library is this possible?
    Several ways to do it.
I don't want to do a complete restore on my mac mini of the macbook pro from time machine, since there is a lot of stuff that just isn't necessary to transfer.
Not advisable to restore a MacBook Pro to a Mini in any case. You should stick to the same hardware for restoring.
So is there someway to either sync the libraries, or copy things? Basically, I want to keep both libraries up to date, likely I'd download things on the MBP, but would then want to access this media on the mac mini... what can I do about this?
Easiest thing is to use Home Sharing - sign in to Home Sharing in itunes on both computers - this will allow you to copy material from one library to another, you can even configurre it to do so automatically if you want to. (Depending on your home network speeds this may be initially slower than say simply copying all the iTunes media to an external drive and then copying this into the Mini library, but once most stuff is copied, additional transfers will be incremental and relatively quicker.)

  • [SOLVED] s2ram works, s2disk is close to working

I installed uswsusp using yaourt -S uswsusp.
Suspend to ram (s2ram) works "out of the box" (all intel hardware, so I'm lucky).
I am close to getting s2disk working by following the Suspend to Disk wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Suspend_to_Disk).  I'm attempting the "Uswsusp Method" detailed in the wiki.
I edited /etc/suspend.conf and added my swap partition:
    resume device = /dev/sda3
    and I enabled compression:
    compress = y
When I issue s2ram, the ram image is created, compressed, and stored on the swap partition.  The machine powers off.  When I power back on, my machine boots like normal.  It does not use the saved state from the swap file.  It shows an error when trying to mount the swap file however.  So, how do I get it to restore from the disk?  I use lilo if that matters.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Now you need to recreate an initramfs with the new hook. So edit the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file. In the HOOKS list add the uresume hook (it is different from the resume hook, which is on the contrary required by the tuxonice method). You should put it immediately before the filesystem hook. When the hook is executed the device file for the swap partition (which you have defined in /etc/suspend.conf) needs to exist (the standard udev hook will take care of this). Now proceed to regenerate your initramfs :
