Hover Mode of N900

Dear fellows,
Hope you all will be doing great. Can any body demonstrate how HOVER MODE of N900 works, mine is not working?
Thanks in advance.

if you put your pointer next to your ear piece (or anywhere to the left of the screen) then swipe it towards the screen, you will see a box with an arrow appear near the bottom left, touch this with your pointer and a red line will appear on it and thats hover mode, then touch it again to deactivate.
this mode is pretty useless tho unless you're copying text

    ceroberts75 “how-to” basic n900 modifications
Disclaimer:  While doing these modifications to your device will not void any warranty on your device, there is the possibility that if not done correctly, you will need to re-flash your device which is explained in #6 in the Top 12 thread.  Doing, or attempting to do these modifications are at your own risk and are of the responsibility of the owner of the device who is doing these.  All these modifications shown do work and I have used, or currently still use on my own n900 device.
Note:  These modifications that are going to be explained may require the installing and enabling of additional catalogs EXTRAS, EXTRAS-TESING & EXTRAS-DEVEL.  After these are installed, the following directions will also be using Filebox, Midnight Commander, Theme Customizer and/or x-terminal and you must have rootsh installed.
If you need these to be installed, and you have already installed the rootsh, then you can easily use the x-terminal (noted as x-term from this point forward) and use these commands:
    open xterm
    sudo gainroot
    apt-get install filebox mc theme-customizer
Pre-curser:  be sure that you read these directions BEFORE attempting to do the mods, otherwise you may not be able to see the folders and files necessary.
Open filebox and tap on the settings icon, circled below:
Scroll down and be sure that you have check marks to match the example below (must have at least “Enable root access (restart needed)” & “Show hidden files and folders”)
Tap the back arrow and then close Filebox.  This will save the settings.  Now your Filebox is set up to be used correctly with the rest of the following directions.

How to mod your power-button drop-down menu, to give you a reboot option and look like the following:
If you want the green and red power buttons, you can download link to green, link to red and place the two .png files in your icon pack using the filebox at:
     /usr/share/icons/(your icon pack name)/48x48/hildon
you can download and use my systemui.xml which would be WAY easier for most…or you can
    THE EASY WAY:
Save the systemui.xml file to your MyDocs folder
open filebox and find the systemui.xml file in the MyDocs folder
    tap/hold, copy
tap the address bar and enter:  /etc/systemui
Tap the clipboard, select the systemui file, paste.
    Say yes to replacing it
    close
reboot device to see the updated menu.
    OR, the hard way…
    open xterm
    sudo gainroot
    cd /etc/systemui
    mc
once midnight commander launches, both the left and the right screen will be at: /etc/systemui/
scroll down to “systemui.xml”  then at the bottom of the screen tap the “4Edit” and it will open this file for editing
And make all that dialog look EXACTLY LIKE THIS:

  • A very usable portrait mode for N900!

I just found this, some of you probably already know about it.
Download ShortcutD  from the maemo repo, then go to settings and ShortcutD. In there you can use camera button or proximity sensor (i originally set caera button but found proximity sensor better), and from the list select 'ctrl+shift+r' (portrait). Doesn't work on desktop (thankfully) but it does elsewhere - conversations, images, app manager etc. Just cover the proximity sensor and it says 'rotation toggled' and you can tilt the phone to portrait. Very, very nice. Shame it doesn't affect the virtual keyboard for SMS though.
Enjoy! And if you like it, kudos!

i think that rotatedaemon was the only program that allowed a qwerty kb in the portrait mode for sms.

  • Hover Hyperlink State in Drop-Down Menu and other Hyperlink display problems

    Hi World!
So, I'm finishing my new website for a client, but a have some problems:
    At first:
I putted a Drop-Down Menu and it contains hyperlinks. Normal. But, I can't give a specific state to each hyperlink in the under-menus, I only can put a state for the global link in the Under-Menu! I can put a hover state to a normal HyperLink but not those into a Drop-Down Menu! It is normal?
How can I make that each link in the Under-Menu has a specific hover state and not all together in the same group! (pictures jointed)
(what I want to do with the links into the menu. - Juste a picture, not from A-Muse)
    Then:
When I want to manage my website on BusinessCatalyst, I see strange underlines under my Menu links! (picture). But on Adobe Muse, I see no underline to these links! What's the matter? ^^
(when it's on the prewiew mode)
    (On A-Muse)
RESOLVED! But not completely. I've made a Hyperlink-style, but it doesn't works...
On the prewiew (with the hovering mouse)
EDIT: In the menu, "Accueil" and *Gérants Indépendants" musn't open another window under. So I made independent forms on the menu. But can I make that those one are in the menu TOO? I don't want to open the blue window for those one.
    Thanks a lot!
    O.

    http://metisfiance.businesscatalyst.com/
    That's the link!
No I just can't "activate" the hover-modes, like the pictures! Normally, Adobe Muse must be easy to use and i used Muse like I have to do and so,.. It doesn't work^^ Why? You have now the link, I hope you can help me

  • N900 Application memory

Can n900 users only use 2gb application memory to install applications? If the application memory gets full are they expected to buy an external SD card to install more applications?

    seriously?! rguhrg..
What are the storage areas on the N900?
The N900 has three internal storage areas:
    1) The OS: 256Meg (UBIFS)
This is the core operating system. It contains all the core system software that comes on the device when shipped. It is small and compact
    2) EMMC MyDocs 27Gig (FAT32)
This area is a bulk storage for your own files. Maps, photos, music files, video clips, sound recordings. It is an area which contains files, not software.
    3) EMMC Home: 2gig (EXT3)
This is an area for storing your data and applications. Your email, settings, SMS messages, preferences.. all the stuff that isn't held in a file
    Why is it split?
Reason 1: USB Mass storage mode
The N900 has a 32gig big-old-lump of flash.. why can't you access it..
Like most other Nokia handsets it offers a "USB Mass Storage" mode that turns you N900 into a flash storage drive..
Lets think for a moment what is happening when we do this..
First, the Flash storage inside the N900 is disconnected from the operating system.
It is then attached to the USB port so the PC the phone is plugged into can see it and use it..
Whilst it is in mass storage mode, the phone itself cannot access the flash..
Now this is a critical point..
      a) when connected to a PC in mass storage mode, the cannot share the flash
      b) FAT32 does not support the ability for two computers ( the PC and phone ) to access the drive at the same time
      c) This is a limitation of FAT32.. a format which must be used thanks to Microsoft.. it is terrible
Reason 2: Unix likes Unix filesystems
A Unix file system can do many more exciting things than FAT32 / Windows. One of the most important things is "symbolic links" This is where you have a file that actually is a redirect to another file!
Windows supports something similar (junctions/symbolic links I believe) but certainly not on FAT32
Unix file systems also have Unix permissions. This means files can be marked as executable (i.e. this file is a program file and can be run) as well as readonly / read-write. FAT32 does not support this.. Either everything is an executable or nothing is..
Unix filesystems support non-file files.. like sockets, pipes / fifos and devices. These are special file types that aren't even files! FAT32 doesn't support that..
To cut this short, Unix software needs to be installed on a Unix filesystem.. FAT32 is not a Unix file system.
Reason 3: What happens in USB mode to all my settings?
Going back to USB storage mode. When you connect your phone to your PC, what would happen if ALL of the 32gig storage was one filesystem (merged).. it would ALL be disconnected and attached to the PC.. So what would happen to your settings? your SMS inbox? Your calendar?
The phone would not be able to access them as the storage is now attached to the PC.. This would like installing microsoft office on the "E:\" on your PC, then pulling that hard disk OUT ... office and your files disappear until the drive is put back in..
Now, on a Symbian phone, (some) applications can be installed onto the flash storage.. but core components are held on the internal flash.. an area that is never larger than 512meg... In fact on the N8 the internal flash storage available is 135meg!!!!
(On phones like the N97 where the internal storage free is less than 40 megs, you can move your SMS messages onto the flash drive (the 32gig drive)... this is great..but the moment you connect in Mass storage mode to a PC, the message database gets split.. it moves back to the internal storage and you can't merge the two databases... nice move there! Data loss!)
At least on the n900 it is two gig
This is why it is split. So that even in Mass storage mode, your phone can continue to run all its apps and access all its internal data rather than killing off processes and freezing up
How can you merge the two area?
You can't.. It doesn't make sense to merge them.. See EVERYTHING above for why it is not possible without removing or breaking seriousl functionalitiy of the phone
How can you make the 2gig partition larger
Really? You want to install 2gigs worth of software on a phone?!
You have to resize the partitions and update the phone's configuration to allow you to do this.
There are threads detailing the complex process over at talk.maemo.org.. None of them are particularly easy to do but once done you can adjust the split
    Here's a detailed how to:
    http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=705391&postcount=188
If you don't understand what it is doing though.. you could end up wrecking your device (you'd need to reflash it to get it going again)

  • Video File problem N900

I cant seem to sync vido files into my N900 through OVI but when I plave the files in hardrive mode the N900 still wont recognise them ??????????

yes.  it does play avi files as that is the file type that the boot up screens/videos are in.
this is the one that i am using now:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujF3bKDs52A
    and this one:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaIJ3e1kQ0k
    and this one:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neb56-0a26Y
    and this one:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0snhk-tqNH4
    and this one:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-svLEHVq54
    and this one:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxEkFuNqLbs
all are avi files.  i created the two long ones myself by taking a couple different ones and tweaking them.
and when i select them to play out of my file manager, they play just fine.  they even show up in my video menu when i open of the media player.

  • [Theme] Black75 for N9

NOTE: While this does not void a warranty, if you are not familiar or comfortable with using terminal or flashing (just in case), you may be best to just looky-loo here. Anything released here is tested and does not "break" the device. Remember, anything you do is at your own risk of having to flash.
Side note: To those of you who were using and modding your n900's....GAME ON!
After so many requests for this, it was about time it happened.
I recently just swapped my case for a white n9, and the cyan75 does not look good with it IMO. So I decided if my case was White…then I may as well create a new theme.
This should be the first of 2. There will eventually be a white75 and a black75. This is the black75 theme.
    Enjoy.
Feedback is welcomed and if you find something that doesn’t look right, please post a screen shot with the error marked.

theme has been updated to allow for the use of the billboard application that was recently released in the store.
     it now works fine.
also, i have updated the pictures and the new link to download the theme in the first post.
also, i have repackaged the rar file so that the instructions and the winscp is not in the folder that is transfered to your device. enjoy.
    Enjoy.

  • I would like to use my Photoshop buttons for a submenu in Muse.

I have created a set of six Photoshop buttons. Four of the buttons are top level menu buttons and two buttons are for a submenu. How do I get these two submenu buttons to appear when I hover over the top level button (i.e., work like submenu buttons with the widget.)
    Kind regards,
    Glenn

    agm123,
Not sure if this answers my question. I am working with Muse 2014. How do I get imported Photoshop buttons to work as submenu buttons. I have a button call Pictures and two submenu buttons called Residential and Commercial that are linked to different pages. How do I get these two buttons to act as submenu buttons under the Pictures button? (i.e., not visible until the Pictures button is in hover mode and then able to click to go to the correct page based on the links of either the Residential button or the Commercial button).
    Kind regards,
    Glenn

  • Flashing with custom kernel

I'm considering reflashing my device as it's still sluggish at times, but i have a custom kernel installed. After flashing all the apps can reinstalled in one go, is this safe with the kernel or should i untick it from the selected list and then after flashing manually reinstall it?
Also, does anyone know if there is a file somewhere on the phone that keeps game scores? I don't want to have to retry getting 3 stars on every angry birds level again...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

the settings don't save the custom widget commands so they need re typing - there might be a way to save them tho, i'll have a look and post back in a few mins
you'll need to download leafpad to restore it, you can open a browser and enter this in the address bar
file:///var/opt/rovio/angrybirds/highscores.lua then enter hover mode and copy/paste it to a text file
if you don't want to dl leafpad straight away
then to restore just open it up in xterm with leafpad and copy the saved file to it, beware it will be a large file - not in kb, just the length of it whilst scrolling

  • ALPS touch pad on the HP laptop

We are new to the lap top world and find the way the touchpad pointer works not to our liking.
I have gone through the settings and have yet to find a way to turn the pointer off what I call the "Hover mode".  Gestures and double click speed settings have not helped.
If  you happen to leave the pointer over any clickable link it will be activated and this has led to some real problems at times.

  • N900 rebooting and boot mode not working... NEED H...

    Hi everyone,
I need some help with my N900.
First I have installed the Nitdroid N11 and play with it a bit but I had some reboot problem but nothing wrong on the Maemo OS.
After installing the new Nitdroid N12 as stated in the forum, I have loaded into the N12 and play a bit with it. But the N900 were still rebooting every so often (may be every 10 min) into Nitdroid UMay aka N12. Because I didn't install the new kernel which is nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-07_rc3_armel.deb I have decided to do it and see if it will change anything. So after installing it it didn't change anything.
So I decided to reboot into Maemo but the boot option did not work anymore.
I have the N900 restarting every 50 sec, the orange light always on and the Nokia logo showing up but the phone doesn't get to the boot option.
I have try to load into boot mode but it doesn't work. I am not even sure if it is charging at all.
Did someone had the same problem? Can anybody help me?
    Cheers
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well I don't think the problem is with Nitdroid as I was playing with that before the phone stopped to work.
The problem is the phone actually seems to not charge at all. When it is plugged into the usb or the charger there is sometimes a steady bright yellow light or sometimes no light at all. Sometimes when I press the power button the Nokia logo comes up, the light is white-blueish and bright and the phone reboot in loop. I don't even get to the boot up options.
I have heard that if the battery is completly flat this problem might occure but if you leave it plug in it should change from bright orange to flashing orange to show that the phone is charging. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=72988
But  I have none of that flashing light anymore. I have tried to connect the lead of my battery to an other phone and it actually worked for this phone and showed the battery as full but not for the N900. Which mean the battery must have been charged.
I want to try the rescue Initrd but I need to have at least a connection with the PC but nothing seems to work.
Sothe phone is not working, it seem that the battery is not being charged, I can't flash my phone even when trying by pushing the U key.
I am really lost and don't know wht to do anymore.
Anybody could help? I will really appreciated it.

  • Portrait Mode For Nokia N900

Unfortunately for some reasons I am not getting full satisfaction from my Nokia N900.
    Missing MMS,
    Quick Battery Drain,
    Landscape Mode all times,
    Unsupported by OVI,
Fully not completable with Nokia PC Suite,
I understand it's a kind of internet tablet. May be for this reason this phone have only landscape mode. But it does not mean that I shall use this phone only for surfing Internet all the way. I think Nokia should look into this matter and enable Portrait mode. In fact landscape mode is not comfortable all the times specially we bring out the phone from trouser's pocket and turn the phone landscape physically and start operation !!
These are some basic points. I believe there are also lots of issues with this phone. But as a Nokia addict I expected more from this device. Now I am badly waiting for change this device :-(
    Thanks to all !!!
    Nokia N8

There is a portrait mode SMS in development over at Maemo.org. Not sure how Nokia plan to address portrait mode in the future.
But it's been stated by Nokea/Maemo that they have no intention in bringing "Native MMS" to the N900. Instead they are working closely with Frals (the creator of fMMS) to make sure his app integrates seamlessly with the O/S.
The post can be viewed here: Statement on native MMS
Personally I think Frals has done an awesome job and I've finally got the hang of using fMMS.
Ovi is currently in beta. (There's enough talk about it on here).
N-Series PC Suite has a better compatibility than Ovi Suite at present.
And the battery drain will be fixed in the next firmware update (PR1.2), which is imminent.

  • Nokia N900 - Smart dialing from portrait mode?

Does the N900 support "smart dialing" from the portait mode numeric key pad?
i.e start to show you matching contacts as you type a string of characters (numbers) from the home screen.

if you have the desktop visible and start typing a name on the keyboard, it opens the contacts app and shows you matching results.. not quite the same, but useful none the less

  • N900 PORTRAIT MODE FOR TEXTING

will this support texting in portrait mode i just got one and like it very much but hate the fact you cant text in portrait mode
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.
    Now using the Lumia 1520

My previous phone was the N97.. I bought it the day it was released in the UK (pre-order in the Nokia store in London.. happy days!)
Before that, my phone was the Nokia 7710.. I had that since 2004.. Not only was it the first touch screen phone from Nokia, but it was the only Series90 handset they released.. It was FANTASTIC.. It had a high res screen that was only beaten on the E90 and then the 5800/N97.. superb piece of kit..
The best thing about it, it was landscape format.. Going back to a candy bar with the N97 was a shock to the system, but at least it worked in landscape too.. Coming back to landscape mode with the N900 feels comfortable again, but I do understand how one handed operation is important.
The screen on the N900, although not multi-touch, is wicked accurate.. The problem is whether a cramped portrait mode keyboard can cope with the relatively large surface area of say a thumb pressing the screen.. something that is always more optimally suited to a screen technology that registers the shape of a screen press, not just the location..
I'm interested to know how the X6 works in portrait mode, see how Nokia are deailng with a different screen tech

  • N900 PC Suite non-compatibility mode

My N900 only seems to be able to connect to PC Suite in 'non-compatibility' mode.
This mode doesnt allow me to use any of the PC suite applications.
How do I change the mode to 'compatibility' mode, or the 'normal' mode so everything works!
No options appear on the phone when the USB cable is connected for PC Suite, like it should do? The phone is automatically charged via the connection though.
    Any ideas?

when you connect the usb, it should give you the option to select "mass storgage' or "PC Suite Mode".
    chose the PC Suite Mode"
