How can I import my IE8 bookmarks/favorites into Safari if I only have access to the data stored on my old hard drive? I can't run Windows to export them to an html file.

My old PC died and I replaced it with a MacBook Pro. Although I was able to copy the data from the PC's hard drive, I am unable to export my previous bookmarks/favorites to an html file because that PC won't boot. Is there any other way to import them into Safari using the raw data stored on that drive or convert them somehow to a format I can import?

You can only use a JSON backup to restore all bookmarks in Firefox.<br />
If you need to import Firefox bookmarks in Safari then you need to (re)install Firefox and export the bookmarks to an HTML file.

Actually Windows can be installed and booted from an external drive if the drive is connected eSATA (external SATA), since the drive is treated as if it's an internal HDD. I used the same method previously to dual-boot from 2 different HDD instead of partitioning.
Most PC motherboards come with them as standard so it's pretty much plug and play but I don't recall seeing a recent Mac with eSATA connectivity though, so that might not be an option for you.

Use either Setup Assistant at first start, or Migration Assistant on subsequent occasions and all will be transferred intact. Given your wording I presume you are Unix savvy and will appreciate the problems that duplicate userids would cause, so of you use MA for the migration, make sure the target Mac has no userid equal to that on the source and you will be fine.
SA does not have these issues since it runs before any user account is created, so it can simply copy over everything. But MA runs after the fact and only solves the issue partially by changing the UID in the user directory, leading to permission problems.

Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.

I was just about to order a photo book, using photos stored on an external hard drive. I organised the book and pressed 'buy'. IPhotos instructed me that I needed to upgrade and so I went on the ASpp store, bought the upgrade and installed as directed. I then used the iPhoto Library upgrader as directed.
After the iPhoto upgrade I can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive. I am able to access the photos stored on my internal hard drive - the remainder (including the photo album) seem to have vanished into thin air.

You can use an email program (e.g. Outlook Express or Windows Live or Thunderbird) and disable HTML for that email (text only mode) to access the email account. I have had an iBookG4 for almost 4 years now, and I recently had to get it updated to Leopard because the operating system was so out of date. Now though, my computer has no spare memory because the hard-drive is full with Leopard. So I have to keep my iTunes files on an external hard -drive. The problem is that when I want to play songs though iTunes, the file copies itself to my hard-drive, which I have no space for. Either that, or iTunes tells me that the files can't be found. In store when I got the operating system updated, I was told to press 'alt' before opening iTunes, so that the songs would play through the hard-drive, but this doesn't seem to work. Is there any way of being able to play the music through iTunes and the external drive only? This is very annoying because I recently got an iPod, and I can't seem to put any music onto it.

I have an extra question. While I was on the advanced settings, I changed the location of my iTunes folder from my computer harddisk to the external drive, so I could avoid having to go through my hard disk at all. Now when I have looked at my external hard drive, the folder with my music has disappeared, and I don't know where it is. Also, some song files aren't there any more because my computer only had room for the majority, but about 700 are still missing. However, all the songs seem to be playing through iTunes. What has happened?

You can even have a Mac HFS data partition.
Instead of dual booting Windows.
Depends on what. You didn't mention. Or whether they are Windows alternatives that have to run natively. Or could be run in a VM guest OS - but have to share RAM and processor resource, which may not be feasible or run well enough.

I second jopilkie's recommendation for Parallels. I've been using Parallels for years - currently using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with MS Office 2013, a ton of Adobe apps, etc. I use it primarily for Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Adobe LiveCycle Designer and a few other apps that aren't available for OS X.
The answer is 'yes' to most of your questions - your network, printing, scanning, Bluetooth, DVD drive(s), external and internal hard drives, etc. can be accessed both in the Windows environment as well as OS X. And you can run Outlook either in on the Mac side or on the Windows side (personally, I signed up for Office 365 - $100 a year and you can install Office on up to 5 machines) - I use Outlook 2013 on the Windows side for three of my email accounts and Outlook 2011 on the Mac side for an additional 3 email accounts: it's nice to keep things separate that way!
I would recommend running Windows 7 - 64-bit, but whichever 'flavor' you prefer. Personally, Pro works just fine for my needs.
But beware Office 2013 on the Windows side - it really takes some familiarity until you become accustomed to it! Too much like Windows 8, but I'm getting used to it...

that's correct. With 10.7, only Win 7 can be run under boot camp. To run XP with Lion, you will need to use a virtual machine such as Parallels or VMware Fusion for example.
