How do I archive my mailboxes?

I have many mailboxes with mail saved in them.  How can I archive them, and start over?  I don't want to delete them.

Hi aouehgeoug,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
In Mail, you can create a mailbox and choose "on my Mac" as the location. This will allow you to store email messages on your computer instead of the mail server.
Here are the steps to create a mailbox:
You can create mailboxes to organize messages. For example, if you receive messages from friends in a book club, you could create a mailbox to store all the messages related to the book club. You could organize your messages further by creating another mailbox inside the book club mailbox for each author you read.
Choose Mailbox > New Mailbox.
Use the Location pop-up menu to choose whether to store the new mailbox on your Mac or on a mail server.
Type a name for the mailbox, and then click OK.
From:
Mail (Mountain Lion): Create mailboxes
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11740
Note that the steps apply to Mavericks as well.
All the best,
Jeremy

  • How do I "restore" a Mailbox from an archive?

    I know how to Archive a Mailbox (Mail > Mailbox > Archive Mailbox > choose a location to store the archive file) and it works.
    But how do I restore a Mailbox from this archived file? I have not found ANY reference in the help menu about what to do with an archived mailbox and what it should be good for.
    I'd appreciate any pointers to understand this archiving business better. Thanks and cheers, Veit

    Again, VK, how helpful that was.
    The reason that I could not find the "Import mailbox" feature: I looked in the Mailbox tab, where one would expect it to be.
    Thanks for the solution, it worked perfectly.
    By the way: What is the difference between these three Mailboxes?:
    Inbox>Veit (i.e. my first name)
    that's the inbox for your email account. you evidently called it Viet.
    (I also have one for my wife and for an old POP account) and
    On My Mac, and
    Veit
    that's just a local mailbox in "on my mac" section called Viet. it's not tied to any account and exists only on your computer.
    Let me know if you can enlighten me there.
    Cheers,
    Veit

  • Using OS 10.4 Mail. IMAP mailboxes filling up on server. How to periodically archive on my Mac but delete from server?

    I'm using OS 10.4, Mail. Accessing IMAP accounts on mail server. The server mail boxes are filling up and bouncing mail. How can I archive the old mail on my computer and delete it from the server to make room for new mail? Will creating an archive mailbox "on my mac", copying old mail from my inbox to the archive mailbox, deleting the old mail from my inbox and then synchronizing with the server work? Will moving the old mail to the archive mailbox work? Thanks in advance for any insights.

    Great news, thanks!

  • How do I get my (30+) OSX archived Apple Mailboxes and old emails to appear on my iPhone?

    How do I get my (30+) OSX archived Apple Mailboxes to appear on my iPhone? I am happy to use any combination of Thunderbird and Apples so that I can sort and archive incoming emails into existing folder (names), and access old emails (1,000s of them) that are only on my iMac now.

    First off Thunderbird does not have a version for iPhone so you need to ask the Apple genius how to work your phone. Secondly most mobile devices will not have enough storage for thousands of messages.
    Your best solution is to setup IMAP email accounts. IMAP was developed just for this use. The messages are stored on the email providers server and you access and manage them from your computer and mobile devices.

  • How do I archive or 'export' mailbox folders to DOCUMENTS?

    How do I archive or 'export' mailbox folders to DOCUMENTS?

    Hey there BethWB,
    It sounds like you are wanting to export your Emails as files, rather than archiving your entire mailbox in one file. You can do that in a few ways, and this article will help you do that in Mavericks:
    Mail (Mavericks): Save messages as files or PDFs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14913
    To save messages as files to use in other apps, select one or more messages or conversations, then choose File > Save As.Rich Text Format retains formatting, but Plain Text does not. Raw Message Source saves messages in mbox format, which can be imported into Mail and most other email apps. With Raw Message Source, the header is visible and an encoded version of attachments is retained.
    To save messages as PDF documents, select one or more messages, then choose File > Export as PDF.
    To save a single message in mbox format, drag the message onto your desktop. To reopen the message in Mail, double-click the file.
    If you ARE wanting to archive the entire mailbox to one file, this will help you do that:
    Mail (Mavericks): Archive messages

    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

    Ok Thank you.
    I wont worry now.
    Just maybe dig in deep and delete the deleted mails that are still around and that will hopefully clean it up a bit.
    Many thanks for your help and advice.

  • How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?

    How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?
    Background:
    I am using Mountain Lion and Mail App and running out of space on my small primary SSD drive (where I keep OS, apps, key user preferences/data and mail for speed). The mail data is the big variable (many GBs) and I want to "archive"/move some of the old mail to my 2nd drive inside the Mac. But I still want it searchable inside spotlight and preferably even inside Mail too. And I'd like to be able to still drag and drop old mails into this archive folder.
    What I've tried that seems to work:
    This seemed to work:
    1. Move the archive folder/mailbox to the 2nd drive/partition/folder (don't delete anything inside Mail App)
    2. Create a symbolic link from its new location to the original/old location
    This seems to work, it looks as "normal" and as if nothing happened inside Mail App but the folder now resides elsewhere and seems searchable etc. But I'm not sure that once caches refresh or over time with updates etc if stuff will break horribly or corrupt.
    Is that the right way to "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight and visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Daniel

    I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
    I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
    I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • Mail "unexpectedly quits" when attempting to Archive a Mailbox

    Each time I try to archive a mailbox, within 10 seconds, the Mail application unexpectedly quits. Anyone have a clue where to start with this?

    Hi CurtRK, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    You mention the envelope, but how about the Cache, and doing it like this...
    Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move the following folder & file to the Desktop.
    Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
    Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • How can I archive components for future reuse?

    Hello,
    I was wondering how can I archive content related to a specific component in order to reuse it in the future. For example, I want to build a product component that has the product name, image and description. I want to have a product catalog and be able to choose from those products and place them in my pages, but I don't want to have to enter all 3 fields each time. I want to be able to use products I entered in the past.
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Create a new smart mailbox and condition that filters all mail of a particular year.
    Then use "Export Mailbox" from the Menu.
    This generates a .mbox file which you can import. But as far as I know you cant look up mails.
    A bit complicated way exists to store all your mails as .emlx files:
    1) Copy all your mails from the smart mailbox to a new (normal) mailbox.
    2) Open* /Users/yourname/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/ and look up your new mailbox. There you will find all mails as .emlx files
    *Use Command-Shift-G (Library Folder is hidden)

  • How do I archive sent mail?

    I recently upgraded a family member's iMac, and restored her mailboxes from archives I'd made. Her Sent mailbox wasn't available, however. Is there any way of restoring this? The old iMac is still available to plunder.

    If you restore the backup copy of the original Mail folder and com.apple.mail.plist file, then all mailboxes including the Sent should be restored. The Mail folder is found at Home/Library/Mail, and the plist at Home/Library/Preferences.
    Depending upon how first restored the Sent mailbox, it might be possible that only a Rebuild would be needed to make the messages visible assuming they were present in the Sent Messages.mbox folder you restored?

  • ?? How do I archive my email on my own hard drive ??

    ?? How do I archive my email on my own hard drive ??
    I have lost all of my past email due to provider hard drive crashes on Hotmail, Yahoomail and Netscapemail over five years.
    I thought I solved this problem by having an IMAP provider and Thunderbird. Nope, Thunderbird somehow sees me as a brand new customer after six months of files.
    I want my email saved on my own harddrive and saved automatically to an archive file;
    ?? Would you continue with a bank that periodically empties your safedeposit boxes ??
    What is going on here ?? Is there a program that will securely handle my email ??

    Just create custom mailbox folders in Mail and store all your mail there, organized however you want. Type "IMAP" in the search box of Mail Help for specific instructions about how to keep local copies of your mail for that kind of accounts. Ask if you need more info.
    You could do the same in Thunderbird, BTW. This is a server reliability problem, not a mail client problem. Most mail clients, if not all, allow you to do what you want, but you need to be aware of it and configure the application appropriately. Look at the following thread for an example of someone with a similar experience to yours using Mail:

    How can I remove a mailbox address from the "From" drop down box in a new e-mail my old e-mail address continue to populate as the sender address

    Hello,
    Try Mail>Preferences>Accounts icon>Account Information tab>Click on the Outgoing SMTP server drop down, choose edit Server list, highlight the old one & click Remove.
    (Such convolution is worthy of Windows® in my estimation)

  • In Mail how do I link a mailbox to an account?

    This is pretty elementary but I've never used mailboxes other than the main inboxes of my two accounts. How do I create a mailbox (not to be confused with the Inbox) for a specific account?
    I ask because I'm trying an Applescript that involves moving mail to a destination mailbox "of account 'X' " (or 'Gmail' in my case) from the Inbox. Mail Help sets out how to create a mailbox but not how to associate it with a particular account, unless I'm missing something. Mail offers me the location "On My Mac" but that's about it.

    First create a mailbox to hold your messages.
    Next go to Mail > Preferences > Rules and add a new rule.  Give it a name then select "if ANY of the following are met:"  Select "Account" and the name of the Account.  For the action select "Move Message" to mailbox "Your mailbox's name."

  • How can we specify the Mailbox for Notes?

    In Mail.app, how can we specify the Mailbox for Notes (where the new notes will be resided)? It is now 'On My Mac'. I wish to change to my IMAP Mailbox so it sync with my iPhone by just checking email (not by syncing on iTunes).
    Thanks in advance.

    You could use the DecimalFormat or NumberFormat to do the job.
    double number 1234.567;
    DecimalForamt df = new DecimalFormat("###.##");
    String s = df.format(number);or
    double number 1234.567;
    NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getNumberInstance();
    nf.setMaximumFractionDigits(2);
    /* if needed.
       nf.setMaximumIntegerDigits(value);
       nf.setMinimumFractionDigits(value);
       nf.setMinimumIntegerDigits(value); */
    String s = nf.format(number);I didn't test the codes but they should work. For more information, please consult the documentations.

  • How to find Archive data In SAP

    Hi experts ,
    How to find Archive data in SAP throught the following tcodes FTWL & AS_afb.
    Thnx
    Venky

    Hello,
    Transaction FTWL is for the DART files (not actually archived data) that are stored in your archive server.  In order to run a query, or browse the DART file, you would need to "Import from archive" from within FTWL and then browse the file.
    I am not sure what you mean by AS_afb.  Please provide more information.
