how do i get a carier to unlock my i phone 4s. it was given to me from a friend of a friend (yes it was legitamate).They were emmigrating due to partner getting job abroad. it has been registerd with apple in my name and details. the carrier wants the original purchaser to contact them but i have no contact details for them. would apple unlock this for me or request carrier (3 network) to unlock it?

unfortunately they still insist on previous owner contacting them even though i have explained the situation? have just come back from usa and apple store over there said to get in contact with apple customer services in uk and they could request on my behalf to carrrier for unlock code. Do you know if anyone has tried this with any outcomes?

    Sorry, but we cannot help you with jailbroken iPhones in this forum. You will probably need to go back to this "third party" who jailbroke your iPhone and ask for assistance.
    Note that even if you can get the iPhone restored, that will almost certainly remove the unlock. Only if an iPhone is offically unlocked by the cell carrier can you restore or upgrade the operating system and have the iPhone remain unlocked.

    iPhones are sold in carrier-locked and unlocked versions. If the phone has a carrier lock on it, you must contact the carrier to have it removed (you probably need to bring the phone to the carrier for the process). If you don't know the carrier, you won't be able to get it unlocked. US carriers will not remove the carrier lock and it cannot be removed.
    How is Safari behaving that makes you say that Safari is not working? The lock status of the phone won't affect Safari, except that if the phone is locked and you aren't using the carrier (and SIM provided by the carrier) to which it is locked, then you can't use the phone or 3G service, only Wi-Fi.
    The iPhone should not appear as a drive on your computer, so there's no error there.

    As stated, only the original Cellular provider can unlock the phone. If they charge $250 for doing so, that is their decision. It is YOUR decision to pay that fee or not.

    As has been stated, you cannot purchase an unlocked iPhone in the US. This kbase article indicates whether iPhones sold in particular countries are carrier-locked (in some cases, you can contact the carrier for unlocking).

    The personal hotspot is not an app or an icon; it is a setting. You must first have your carrier provision it, then you turn it on in settings. Most carriers charge extra for tethering.

    The great news about our 4G LTE devices is that they are already unlocked. You can use a SIM card from another carrier but we won't be able to guarantee that the device will work the same way as they do when you are connected to the VZW network.

    Once the iPhone 3GS is in DFU mode and plugged into iTunes, the restore and update process begins. The restores process are as followed:

    I clicked on the more information tab and was taken to a website with some troubleshooting. I did what they suggested (based on the error #) and still no luck. I’ve tried to restore and update about 10 times now but the same message keeps coming up at the end. What should I do now?
    P.S: I have the latest version of iTunes (11), my windows is up to date etc ...

    If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

    Restore.  Everything except the password will be restored.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  Be forewarned that it takes a long time.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
    If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.
