How do I get past a black screen on start up. I think it may have overheated.

My husband closed his MacBook Pro and later piled a bunch of stuff on it. When he opened it he had a black screen. If you turn it off it starts up with a white screen and the thinking wheel spinning and then goes back. If the touchpad it moved the curser is displayed. How do I get past the black screen?

Try SMC and PRAM resets:

Upon start up I get a "start up disk full message, delete files". Now on startup I only get a blue screen. How do I get past the blue screen and how do I delete files.

That;s really not enough free space... you can use a tools such as OmniDiskSweeper to find out where your large files reside and begin pruning (or copying to an external if they're files that you want to keep).
One thing is certain - if you're going to continue your current usage you're certainly going to need to install a larger boot drive.

  • How can I get past the white screen?

When I start my iMac I see a message that my start up disk is full and that I need to delete files. After I type in my user name and password, all I see if a white screen. This problem started today. The error message about the start up disk started two days ago, and when I looked at the disk, I saw that over half of it has files described as "other". The hard drive is 250 GB. I have Time Machine backups but I don't know how to get to them to help me. So, I guess that I have two questions: how do I get past the white screen, and what are the files that are catogoraized as other? Thanks.

I did not put the OS info in my question because I am not sure what I have. I upgraded to Lion so that I could use the cloud between my devices, however I do not know the number.
Apple menu item->About this Mac and the version is listed there. Click on that and get the build number. Click again and get the machine's serial number.
I am stuck on the white screen. Any other advice?
Start with a google search for white screen mac. This one might do the trick: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-desktops/138137-imac-wont-get-passed-whit e-screen.html

  • Can't get past the white screen at start up

I can not get past the white screen when it starts up. It will chime and then stay at the white screen. I have replaced the hard drive, memory, battery. I have reset the PRAM and the SMC.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Can't get past the blue screen with "starting Mac OS X"

I am having problems with starting my iMac. It gets to the blue screen with "starting Mac OS X" but won't go beyond that point. I was able to get the disc drive open with the help of other posts, holding down the mouse while turning on the computer, but the drive won't stay closed with the install disc in it. I have even tried holding down the "c" key while restarting the computer and it wouldn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. So much info that I could really use. Also, please keep in mind that I am not too computer savy. Simple language please.
    Thanks

If the steps I provided in my earlier post are not helping, then I see your options at this point as follows:
    1. Run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that came the affected computer. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ for comprehensive advice on using the AHT in troubleshooting.
    2. Performing an Archive and Install. For important tips on this, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order.
    3. Take the computer in for service. If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, I'd recommend taking it there. You may wish to call ahead to make an appointment at the Genius Bar.
    Good luck!

  • How do I get past the login screen?

    Hey all,
I just bought a nice new MacBook Pro 15" 2.66 GHz and am happy with it so far.
The problem is I had to buy it because my PowerBook G4 12" decided to die on me. It happened slowly over the course of a weekend. The PB started to get really slow, and I knew it wasn't because of the internet, just figured I had overloaded the hard drive. So I started to move files to an external hard drive. It was slow and every hour or so an application would freeze, and I couldn't force quit, so I would have to shut down. Eventually it got to the point that I wasn't even running other programs, just trying to transfer files, and I would get the swirly rainbow circle.
I transferred most of the files, except for my iTunes collection. I figured, no problem, I have my iPod.
I ordered the new computer, and have realized, that I can't transfer my iTunes collection through my iPod. And now, my PBG4 can turn on, and get me to the login screen looks like it's going to boot up, but goes right back to the login.
Is there anything I can do to bypass the login? I've tried to start it in safe mode, but the PB won't even get to the login screen after 30 minutes of waiting. I also tried holding shift while logging in, but no dice.
I have an ethernet cable, and know that if I can log on, I'd be able to move my info somehow, please help!
    Thank you, Lindsey

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro. You'll love it.
In terms of your PowerBook G4, apparently your Hard Disk Drive has failed completely and I am not sure what else it wrong.
    First, try this:
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
    • Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
    • Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
    • Log in and empty Trash.
    • Restart normally and log in.
If that does not work try Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
If still no dice, try the procedure outlined in the article Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck.

  • Macbook pro will not shut down, how do I get past the grey screen freeze without a hard shutdown?

Recently upgraded from 17" Macbook Pro to 15" late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina. I have an intemittant problem, (that I also experienced with my 17" Macbook) where when I log out or try to shut down I get a grey screen, no cursor, no spinning beachball... no way to escape a blank grey screen. Seems to be happening more often.

    Reset SMC.

  • Reset my laptop now I can't get past this black screen with text?

I tweeted toshiba telling them my problem on Twitter (about how it would let me log in but it wouldn't take me to the desktop, it would just keep loading for hours til I would turn the computer on again to try and use my laptop) then direct messaged the @toshibausahelp and asked them if I should just reset my laptop and asked if it would then work. The person messaged me back and told me to reset my computer so by pressing f8 at the toshiba logo at the start up it took me to the options to reset my laptop. Then it took like 2 hours to reset and then my screen literally says "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" idk what to do? That's the only place it'll take me to, any key I press won't effect it. Everything is gone which I knew it would be, but I thought resetting it would give me a fresh start to try again. But I can't even try, it won't let me go anywhere else can someone help me. I got this laptop in June and it's had so many problems. It's a satellite c55-b5202

Aftre the reset you need to configure correctly your router. Using Cisco Connect is the more easy way because it try automatically to sense the type of connection without asking to the user/operator. If you don't have Cisco Connect you have to configure manually using the web interface (http://192.168.1.1) but you need to know the right parameters for your ISP (and they depends only from your ISP, not from the router). You can try also to ark the customer support for your ISP or find another user with same provider and use similar parameters.
You can also try to re-download Cisco Connect software from here:
    http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/utility/1224662063213/CiscoConnect.E2000.1.3.11006.1.e...
Of course you can connect your computer directly to modem for the download, then reconnect router between you and your modem. Better to connect router to you computer with cable, not wireless for first configuration.

  • How can i get off of black screen with an apple on it?

Its been it like almost 5 hours!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Deleted everything on Mac, how do I get past the grey screen?

I tried to delete all my data on my old Mac so I could sell it on. I've obviously deleted something important as now when you turn on the computer all that comes up is a grey start up screen with a flashing no entry sign, apple icon and a file with a question mark. I'm not worried about data loss but is there a way I can gain access to the computer again?

It would appear that you deleted some or all of the operating system files. Boot your iMac from the installer disk that came with it (or a more recent retail copy of Mac OS X) and reinstall Mac OS X. I'd recommend running Disk Utility from the menu and erase the hard drive, using the Zero All Data option under Security Options before you reinstall to make sure your data isn't recoverable.

  • Greetings! I have a nano touch 6th gen that suddenly died when I hooked it up to my netbook. Battery charged. Used ditrct power source. Left Charging Overnight. Sleep and on tried, nothing but black screen. I appreciate any thoughts you may have.

Sorry!! My first time here and I unloaded all (almost) all the tribulations in the question! My daughter gave me this nano touch 6th gen- I thought it was a battery, now you know what you are dealing with here, please type slow- it worked terrifically. I hooked to my netbook while my external was plugged in and the nano flashed something like don't unplug in neon letters and died. During this dramatic death scene, my entire library for I tunes was wiped out. I truly have no idea what happened or if it can even be fixed! Any thoughts or suggestions would be muchly appreciated ( I am afraid to call my daughter- I still struggle with my cell phone and this may send her off the edge!)

Thank you so much for your advice, and please excuse the tardiness of my response. I tried three times but it still won't turn on. But it was terrific of you to help.. at least now I have tried all things that should have worked. I don't have the serial # from the original box..but I noticed tiny little writing under the clip. Sadly I tried to take a picture of it to blow up so i could read it. I do not think I have to tell you the outcome of that one. Then I took a mirror thinking that if I could magnify I could read. Nope. And the ultimate act of lunacy that truly gives creedance to my moniker dizzard- I tried taking a picture of the magnified mirror image. During this entire process it did not occur to me to see if the clip came off. Since you have been so kind, may I impose upon you to ask how to remove the clip?
    Ever so grateful!
