I have a nice new MacBook Pro and want to download a program to it (http://www.pencil-animation.org/ ). How do I know if this is safe to do?
(Is this a leftover concern back from the old days when I used to use a PC and would quake at the thought of some .EXE file ruining my whole computer?)
Is there a resource where I can check out things that I want to download? Is this question even relevant with a Mac? Thanks!

You don't have to worry about viruses like on a PC--especially when download files from a reputable site, like the one you are asking about. There is a free virus software aoo you can install called ClamXAV, but it's really not necessary.

You will need a licensed copy of Windows 7, and I recommend VMFusion. You can run the program in Unity mode just as if it were a Mac application. Or, you can install Windows in Bootcamp and run the Mac in Windows when you boot and run it that way. Depends on the resources. I prefer the VM method because it is cleaner and gives you more options as far as backups, etc.

No. Rendering is the process of compressing your video to a MPEG2 format required by the DVD specification. This process takes time. Hollywood Studios will use render farms to render just a few frames. In terms of iDVD, the only thing that can decrease your rendering time is by getting a faster processor. After that, you could use DVDSP and multiple computers to create your own networked rendering or purchase specific hardware for the MacPro for MPEG encoding. And these rendering cards start at $2,000 last I looked.

Your MacBook Air is an Intel-based system. To download the current version (11.2.202.228), go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and download it from there.
If there is still a Flash issue, you can try the Google Chrome browser, which has the current Flash built into it, to see if it works any differently with the videos. It's available from https://www.google.com/chrome

If it's compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.8, buy a retail Mac OS X 10.5 DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay.

Unfortunately, there's not a way to check if they are original or pirated. Also, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, Final Cut Pro (if it's Final Cut Pro X) and Logic Pro, if they were purchased in the App Store, don't need a product key. My advice is to delete all those applications, and purchase again the applications you need with your Apple ID in the App Store, if they are available there.
That's because you will have problems to update them (as they are registered to the old owner's Apple ID) and you can't use them legally if you haven't purchased the applications

Did you download Firefox from the official Mozilla site? Sometimes if you search on Google or any search provider, they sometimes have "Advertised links" which are sometimes Firefox bundles that have been slightly modified/shipped with malicious software.

An alert will pop up in iTunes when you go to sync your iPhone saying that there is a software update available.. Would you like to download it now?

iTunes does not provide statistics. The only way to tell is either to have logs from your server, or to use something like Feedburner which then uses a proxy for the URLs so it can count downloads (though this can present problens).

This depends on it being possible to set up these facilities on your server. Note that tracking usage of the feed itself is pretty meaningless, since any subscriber's iTunes will check the feed at 15 minute intervals while iTunes is running.

Anyway, open Applications>Utilities>Java Preferences, that'll tell you the Versions you have... might need to check "Enable applet Pug-in and Web Start Applications", not sure.

How do you know if your Iphone app is connecting to the internet?

I'm a brand new Iphone user and I have a question about apps. I only have the smallest data plan. I'm wondering how do you know if your app (or any app you download) once opened connects to the internet?
For instance I have a Netflix subscription. When I hit the Netflix app is that connecting to the internet? When I watch a movie or tv in my own que is that still on the internet?
Or what about the Kindle app or iBooks? Is it on the internet to read?
Those are just two small examples. I'm having a hard time figuring out which apps to download based on if they connect to the internet for their use.

As a general rule, if the app stores all of its data locally on your phone, a data connection is not needed for that app to function properly. If the app does not store data locally on your phone...streaming apps(Netflix), the built in Maps app, etc., a data connection will be required for the app to function properly. You can minimize your cellular data usage by only using such apps when connected to available WiFi. You also have the ability to turn cellular data completely off in settings: Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data>Off. Best to completely read an apps description before installing such on your phone. If a data connection is required for the app to function, it will state such in the app's description.

I don't know what "security software" you're trying to download, but the chances are overwhelmingly good that you don't need it, and it's likely to do more harm than good.
