How do I know if my stuff is backed up on iCloud?

Alright, I have possible phone migration/firmware update and I wanna be sure about this.
My photos, apps etc are all backed-up via iTunes. However, I've chosen a few things to back up via Settings > iCloud.
I've turned these on:
Contacts
Bookmarks
Notes
Find My iPhone
However, when I go Storage & Backup at the bottom, my total storage is 5.0GB and Available is ALSO 5.0GB.
iCloud Backup is set to off. Do I have to turn that on? Because it reads that my camera roll, accounts, docus and settings will be synced to iCloud which is what I do NOT want. I just want those above to be saved.

@ karebu,
When synching any iDevice whether that be an iPhone, iPad, iPod etc you have two options for synching your data ( back up ) to the computer where a copy of the backup is stored in the iTunes folder of your computer or you have the the alternate by using iCloud which doesn't store the backup on your computer it gets stored in the cloud similar as if you were to backup to the computer.
If the time comes when you need to restore your phone or you upgrade to another handset during the setup of the phone you will be prompted to use icloud or not and you will also be asked if you want the set the phone up as new or recover from an old backup.  One of the purposes of icloud is so that you can set up your iDevice without having the phone plugged into your mac or PC.
I hope this has clarified a few things for you.

  • Two different accounts? How do I know if my stuff is backed up?

My laptop and my iPhone seem to have two different iCloud accounts. The first account (laptop) is the username that I had before I changed my username to the account that is on my iPhone. Since my laptop has my old one, I tried to log out and sign in with my newish username – which I have had for quite some time now – in order to make sure that my stuff is backed up.
I do not want to delete anything if I don't have to but I just want all of my devices to be on the same page.
How can I tell what is backed up where in order to keep all of my data and toys, etc.?

  • Okay, I am now on IOS5.  How do I know my data is being back up in iCloud?  I did sign up for a me email account.  Also, we have two IPads, as long as we have the same iTunes account should everything "live together" in the iCloud?

Okay, I have upgraded iPad and ipad2 to IOS5, how do I know my data is backed up in iCloud?  Also, will both iPads be under one iTunes ID?

The idea to jumpstart by change was not the smartest one, but gives you an opportunity to use that "temporary" account as permanent. You do not have a choice cause obviously despite you thinking that old account is no more -it does exist on Apple servers. And if you are unwilling to share your [email protected] with friend, just create one extra [email protected] for your friend. One suggestion - do not use gmail.

How do I know my contacts have been backed-up before I update to the new software? itunes tells me I have to erase and restore, I'm afraid of loosing contacts.

you can sync your contacts and things under your own itunes and your wife can have her own... or both in one as long as you have it synced in the same computer they will be there
if you name ur phones its easier to tell which is which
my husband kids and i all have our names and then iphone next to it and it creates a different backup for each and then we update and we restore from there it lets you choose which backup you want...
    hope it helps!!

  • My iphone quit working I am getting a new one under warranty.  How do I know if my contacts were backed up

My iPhone quit working and I am getting a new one, how do I know if my contacts ere backed up?

Did you have it set up to sync Contacts to iCloud? If so you can log in to https://www.icloud.com and see that they are there.
If you just backed up to iTunes or iCloud then there isn't a way to visually verify the contacts other than doing a restore. One exception to that is that if you used iTunes for the backup, there are 3rd party extractor programs that can display the contacts.

Set up iCloud on your new computer, sign into your account and turn on your data syncing.  The data will then download to your computer.

  • HT4859 how do you see the items that are backed up to iCloud -  I have 4.5 GB that I have used but I cant find where to see those items...help

how do you see the items that are backed up to iCloud -  I have 4.5 GB that I have used but I cant find where to see those items...help

That is everything in your iCloud account.  Videos and camera roll photos are only included in your backup, the size and content of which you can see on your phone in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage>tap the name of your device under Backup.  This will show you the size of "Camera Roll", where these are contained.  (You can't see any detail beyond that.)  Photo stream photos can only been seen in your photo stream album on your phone, and they don't count against your storage so they aren't part of the 4.5 GB.  Everything esle is either in the backup, the items listed in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, or on icloud.com, where you can see your contacts, calendars, etc.

Without an iPhone or iPod Touch to restore the backup to, you cannot access the camera roll photos stored in the iCloud backup.  Signing into the account on your computer and enabling photo stream will only allow you to access photo stream photos from the last 30 days, and any shared stream you were subscribed to.
You can redownload purchased music in iTunes on your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519.

  • HT4847 How do I view the pictures that are backed up in icloud?  How do I know they are there before I delete them from one device?

How do I know for sure that my photos from my ipad , iphone and ipod are all stored in icloud.  I want to delete from devices but be sure that I have all of my pictures saved and accessable. Thanks.

Unfortunately, you cannot view them and I would not recommend to only store your photos via iCloud, because iCloud will only do a backup of your device including the photos that you have currently stored in your Camera Roll. I would recommend to store them (manually or via Photo Stream) on Mac/PC or with another cloud storage service like Dropbox.

  • HT201317 How do get all the stuff I backed up on iCloud onto my phone?

I did a factory reset on my phone and lost everything I thought that was the point of iCloud how can I get my stuff back?

When you go through Setup Assistant on a newly restored device using iOS 5 or later, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from.

  • How do I know I'm accessing my complimentary amount of iCloud that came from somewhere and have not just set up a new paid account on my new iPhone?

Hmm, thought that field was all I got to type in.  First post here, sorry.
Some time ago, a techie set up something that gave me a complimentary amount of iCloud to go with my iMac.  Maybe that went with the wireless box I got? I guess it works.  I just got a new iPhone and was just encouraged to sign in to (activate?) iCloud, which I did and the settings now identify my email address in iCloud.  I want to know if doing this will access the complimentary account or is it actually signing me up to a new paid account for iCloud.  Which I don't want.
I've already had two emails over the last couple of months from "Apple", completely without identification or logo telling me I will need to pay for an iCloud account.  No idea what that was about. Thought it was phishing, actually.  Contacted Apple through this website, I think. No reply.
Anyway, I just want my free iCloud "place" to synch my iMac, iPad and now my iPhone.  Don't need more space.  Don't need more emails from "apple."  Are things safely going to my complimentary iCloud account?
    Thanks.

If you used the same Apple ID as previously then you are using the same iCloud account.

  • How do I know if time machine is backing up my apple mail? I need to have copies of all of my emails, so there I have a lot of mail files. I was told that if I change computers, that the mail files will all be on time machine. Is this true? Thanks, Dave

Is there a way to verify  if time machine is backing up my apple mail?  I was told that if I change computers, that the mail files will all be on time machine and can be easily be put on a new computer using my time machine backups.  Is this true? Thanks, Dave

Having deleted some Mail messages by mistake, I have had to recover them from TM. I can tell you that the recovery of mail messages will be done at the mailbox level. In my case it was half of the messages in a mailbox. So I recovered the complete mailbox from TM. Then I copied the messages from the recovered mailbox back into the mailbox I use in Mail. I hope that helps.
Please be aware that TM is a backup application and not an archival application. What that means is that if your TM drive gets full, it will get rid of older files which could be mail messages to make space for newer backups. You might want to consider archiving your mail instead of using TM if you need to maintain your mail messages for extended periods of time.

  • HT1766 how do i know if my pictures are  backed up on my computer from my iPhone?

I have a mac book pro which i use to download music to my iphone. however, my iphone has just been stolen. I have never intentionally "backed up" my phone. But the computer does recognize the phone as "Lauren's Iphone" everytime i connect it to the pc. When i buy another iphone will i be able to sync the contacts, photos, etc from the pc?

If you had been syncing with iTunes a backup was automatically made at the beginning of the sync process (unless you were backing up to iCloud).  You can verify that you have a backup by opening iTunes on your computer and going to Preferences.  The Devices tab lists any backups; you can hover your mouse over a backup to reveal the phone number, IMEI and serial number of the device associated with the backup to confirm that it was your stolen phone.
When you get your new phone restore it from this backup as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109.  Note: you may not get all your contacts back unless they were synced to iCloud or a supported program on your pc (such as Outlook).
