How do I re-hide this file called "private"

A file called "private", which is supposed to be invisible, has suddenly become visible. How do I make this file invisible again?

Arthur wrote:
You can do this in Terminal.
          1.          open a terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
          2.          change to the directory where the private folder is. For example, it looks like it is in your HD, so that would be:
          cd /
    Once you are in that directory, type this:
          mv "private" ".private"
Note the period before the second one. You have to enter the commands exactly as written.

This folder is necessary for Mac OS X to operate and shouldn't be renamed or deleted.

    You can't edit a file with PDF Pack, but you should be able to convert it to a Word document, and if you are really lucky edit THAT and make a new PDF. Don't expect too much though!

    I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

    Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
    You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
    If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
    A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
    A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":<br />
    An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
    You may need to add quotes ("") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension.

  • Importing Movies in iMovie why are they located in a file called Private

    Hi
    I have just plugged my video camera into my macbook. I selected Import from camera and then directed the archive to a connected mypassport drive. The problem is they are now all located in a file called Private.???? How do I extract the files from there to a specific folder please. I plan to have a mypassport drive for all my preedited videos and then store the edited final cut version on my mac. I cant seem to drag the files from this folder to one of my choice.  HELP Please
    Thanks

    Now, it still works that way, with a wrinkle. It moves all the files from your camera to the place you specify, but now it places them in a package. The package looks like the archive is a single file, but in reality, it contains all the files and folders as before. To see what is in the package, right click on the package name and select Show Package Contents. You should now see all the folders and files.
    Good point AppleMan. I had forgotten about that wrinkle, even though I've previously mentioned it in other posts. Probably because I generally don't import from Archives, but straight from the camera.
    I use a ShedWorx app called RevolverHD rather than iMovie's built-in Archive feature as it provides for selective archiving of clips. With iMovie the only option is to archive the full contents of the camera (Archive All). As my camera is a 60GB hard drive model (allowing about 8 hours at the highest setting), I tend to keep clips on the drive until I need space for new recordings. Using iMovie for the archive results in duplication, as all the older clips are archived again. It then gets a bit messy keeping track of things if, in the meantime, I've deleted any clips from the camera.
    The only downside to using RevolverHD is that, whilst the archive shows the correct recording date and time, when imported to iMovie the clips show the date and time imported, not the recorded date and time. For this reason, I prefer to import directly from the camera. I understand (from my reading of your posts), that you import from the iMovie archive. Once you are happy with the import you then erase your camera card. So, when next using iMovie's Archive All feature, the new archive will comprise just your new clips. That's probably the ideal process, as it keeps things tidy, imports the correct date and time, and guarantees that the archive is reliable.
    Sorry to move a bit beyond the OP's question, but thought this might be of interest to others here.

  • How can I have a backing file call a JavaScript function?

    I have a Weblogic portal with a JSP portlet. The portlet has a backing file. How can I get the backing file to call a JavaScript function in my portlet?
    thanks

    Hi
    your questions are not correct because you are mixing up server side operations with client side operations.
    First server side code executes then the page is sent to the browser , then any javascript executes on the browser. So asking for javascript to be called from backing file (server side) doesn't make sense or asking for javascript to read a parameter doesnt exactly work either.
    However in your server code suppose you have a variable action in the request that you want javascript to know then in your JSP you would add something like
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var action = '${requestScope.action}';
    alert(action);//or whatever you want to do
    <c:if test="${requestScope.someOthervariable == ''xyz'}"><%-- this check is done on the server --%>
    callSomeJavascript(); <%--this javascript is only executed when the server side value of someOtherVariable is xyz --%>
    </c:if>
    </script>
    i.e. you can output the javascript that has the variables you need or the function calls you want.
    Like I said understand whats server side and whats client side.

  • How do I get/unarchive this file...?

    I erased my hardrive from my powerbook G4 about a year ago. I thought I archived/saved the files I needed, but idiot me, didn't check to see what got saved and found out the archive failed less than half way through.
    I had the files on my idisk/webpage but again, idiot me did no renew my account and the files are gone. (also about a year or more ago)
    I found a file and was wondering if someone could help...
    Does anyone know what this is? oR how I can see the files saved in it??
    RestoreCatalog-iDisk.cat.gz
    ANY information pretaining to this filel or any way of getting back files would help (I tried Filesalvage already). All the programs seem to just recover current media... I have yet to find one that actually does what it says: recover erased hardrive...
    THANKS

    Cloe:
    I don't know much about iDisk as I have never had a subscription. In terms of recovering data from your erased HDD, it is an exceedingly long shot but Dr. Smoke's FAQ Data Recovery offers many helpful suggestions.
    Please do post back if you have further questions.
    Good luck.

  • How do I navigate to this file

    I need to do the below action, but I am not sure where to start.
    Navigate to /usr/local/clamXav/share/clamav/ and drag mirrors.dat to the trash. You'll need to authenticate it with an admin password

    Hi,
    The very first folder, /usr, is right at the top level of your HD (Macintosh HD>usr), but you can't normally see it there because it has an "invisible" flag. Once you do get into /usr you should be able to navigate normally from there.
    You can open a window into /usr by again using the Go to Folder command:
    Finder menu>Go>Go to Folder
    enter /usr and click GO
    from there you should be able to navigate via Finder as usual.
    Alternatively, you could first enable Finder to show all invisible files and folders, and then just double-click on the Macintosh HD icon. You will then be able to see usr, and navigate from there. There are many ways to make hidden files visible and then hide them again; an easy way is to use the Finder tab in the freeware utility [TinkerTool|http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html].

  • How to avoid creation of _(file.*), coping from tiger to pc?

    how to avoid the creation of this file for ever on a pc environment??
    I explain: as i copy any image file, it goes to a spooler directory and that begins instantly to process the file to an OPI server, separating CMYK channels, converting it to high and low resolution...
    but as this _(file) is created (same name and extension, but 0Kb and with this _ underscore in the beggining of it name), it begins to process it, and as it really does not exists as an image itself, it crashes the OPI server, forcing us to restart it...
    and then, you can imagine the mess, because we're a newspaper, with more than 100 machines logged in two cities simultaneously...
    thanks for those who replied last topic I posted about some softwares to delete it! it really worked!!
    but now, can anyone have a clue how to DON'T create this file?
    thanks in advance!

    I believe that command is supposed to stop the creation .DS_Store files on servers. Also, I think the plist file gets written to the user ~/Library/Pref, it probably ought to exist both there and in the /Library/Pref folder to really work.
    I didn't think the Save for Web option would work for your purposes. I don't believe anything will work except to strip the resource fork off the files before you send them. There is an Applescript that will do it, using a UNIX command in the script. You select a folder, run the Applescript, and it strips the resource fork off all files in the folder and creates a sub-folder called Stripped with resourceless copies of the files in the original:
    -- Strip resource fork and metadata in Tiger for one file.
    -- If a folder is selected creates an unresourced subfolder of the selected folder
    tell application "Finder"
         try
              set aFile to the selection as alias
              set aFolder to the container of aFile
         on error
              display dialog "Select a file"
              return
         end try
         set aFile to the quoted form of POSIX path of aFile
         do shell script "rsync -a " & aFile & " " & aFile & "Stripped; mv " & aFile & "Stripped " & aFile
         update aFolder
    end tell
    The "do shell script" line must be all a single line in Script Editor. It might wrap funny in the browser. Anyway, copy it, paste into Script Editor, hit compile, and save it as an application. I've only fooled with it a little tiny bit, so I'm not sure whether the rsync process would have any strange effects on complex Photoshop and EPS files or not.
    As far as I know the only way to send Mac files without resource forks to a server is to strip them from the files.

    I wrote the applet in Netbeans and its working fine when I run it.
    Now I need to run this applet on a different laptop, which does not have NetBeans. It has C://postplotter.txt with the necessary data.
    I am using FileReader to read the .txt file :
    try {                                           // Extracting parameters from the .txt file.
                String url = "C://postplotter.txt";
                FileReader input = new FileReader(url);
                BufferedReader bufread = new BufferedReader(input);
                String[] line  = new String[15];
                for (int i=0; i<15; i++) {
                    line[i] = bufread.readLine();
                    System.out.println(line);
    Please let me know how to go about doing this. (Opening the applet on the laptop).
    I would like to be able to write an html file which has the applet embedded in it.

    Hi,
    just i want how will atomatically output form this file to todays date file .
    I have create daily report so how will you copu following output to to todays date.txt file copy.
    DATECOMP=`date '+%d%m%Y'`
    DATECOMP1=`date '+%y%m%d%k%M'`
    DATECOMP2=`date -d "-1 day" '+%d%m%Y'`
    mkdir /oracle/${DATECOMP}.txt
    du -sh /oradata/arch
    du -sh /oradata/backup/xyz_backup/${DATECOMP2}.tgz
    du -sh /oradata/dpdump/xyz_${DATECOMP1}.dmp.gz
    du -sh /oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/admin/xyz/bdump/alert_xyz.log
    du -sh /oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/admin/xyz/udump

    du -sh /oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/network/log/listener.log
    du -sh /oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/network/log/sqlnet.log

    Surely I agree with Pavan here that I amnot able to "exactl" understand the need or question. But I guess you want a daily report sort of thing. Make up a shell script and then configure it with DBMS_SCHEDULER.We don't know that youhave 10g or not but still I am just taking a guess that you have. Than using UTL_FILE ,maintain the o/s file the way you want.

  • How can I un-hide sales tax code in FB01?

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a vendor invoice posting through the intercompany sales EDI process, and am getting error 'field BSEG-MWSKZ does not exist in screen SAPMF05A 0302'.  When I manually try to create a VI posting via FB01, I can confirm that tax code is hidden from the vendor line item screen.  Does anyone know how I can get the tax code back on this screen?
    I have looked through the field status variant and field status group config, but don't see tax code as one of the fields that can be controlled via this config (I do see withholding tax code, but I'm looking for sales tax code).  Does anyone know how I can un-hide this field?
    Thanks!
    Allison

    Thanks.  I did try that, but found that the tax code isn't controlled by any of the field status stuff.  BUT, I just found the solution to my problem via another forum.  Apparently the tax code, and whether or not it is included on the screen, is controlled by the tax category of the G/L account that you're posting too.  I changed the tax category of my G/L account to '*' (All tax types allowed), and that caused the tax code field to appear and be editable in FB01. Yay!

    My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes.  I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes.  There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE.  How can I get this to work with iTunes again?

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
    4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • I have a bunch of system files that should be hidden, but are visible in my finder folder (for example, a file called ".Ds_Store appears). How can I hide these from view?

    I have a macbook pro, and a few months ago I had to find some hidden system files. I asked a discussion question, and someone helped me to display all the hidden folders. However, now I can't figure out a way to hide these files again (I no longer need to see them). How do I do this? It's not just one file, but a whole bunch of files.

    Open the Script Editor or AppleScript Editor in one of the subfolders of Applications and run the following:
    tell application "Finder" to quit
    if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is "1" then
    do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"
    else
    do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"
    end if
    delay 2
    tell application "Finder" to run
    If you change your mind later, run the script again.
