How do I reinstall Yosemite while keeping my personal files & settings?

Hi,
I am running Yosemite (10.10.2) on my 2013 Macbook Air and its in need of some love. Most notably, my Notes app has broken (it crashes on every attempt to open it) and my bluetooth has gone haywire (device detection and personal hotspot works when they feel like it), my display will randomly go black and is becoming an increasingly mysterious and lengthy process to get it back (normally just mashing keys and opening and closing the lid several times over). Thats just the half of it.
I want to say the mass majority of these issues began after signing myself up to receive all these alpha, beta, omega, apple tree pre-seed, under-cooked releases or whatever apple pushes down the pipeline. Needless to say, I feel its time to reinstall my OS though I am quickly discovering that this whole process was significantly easier in a Windows environment which seems really counter-intuitive considering well, this is Apple and things are just supposed to work like magical butter.
So I ended up reinstalling Yosemite through the Recovery Utility (CMD+R). It downloaded from the internet and installed. My personal files were kept intact but it didn't fix my Notes app as it still kept quitting unexpectedly when trying to launch it. So I opted to perform a clean install. I quickly realized this was a TERRIBLE idea as I was unable to recover important settings like my keychain passwords, my email accounts and so forth. Thankfully I made a time machine backup before attempting any of this so I am right back where I started (sort of).
I need some help please.
My goal is to perform a clean install of Yosemite to rid myself of these OS oddities meanwhile keeping everything important. This includes, most notably:
my personal document, photo and music files
my iTunes library
my iPhoto library (and more importantly, the settings, albums tags, image edits etc etc) that I've made over the years
my keychain passwords
my email accounts (it took me almost an hour to setup and properly configure all 9 of my email accounts and i don't want to go through that again)
my calendar and events within it
Other settings I would like to keep, but am willing to sacrifice are:
my iMessage history
my applications
my user experience settings; things like the dock size and behaviour, track pad scroll speed etc etc etc. I'm on the fence with this one since I've plugged in so much sudo code into terminal trying to accomplish things in the past, that I fear theres some settings that shouldn't be restored.
So Apple community, what say thee; what is my best course of action?
Thank you,
-Brendon

Oh boy... throughout all of this i think I've really done a number. In trying to execute the instructions in the link you provided, I receive this error while trying to access my internet accounts panel under system preferences:
"Preferences Error
Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane."
What have I done lol...

Is it possible to open PageMaker files in CS2? or CS6?  How can I download it while keeping my CC2014?
Can someone give me step by step instructions?

  • I want to bring in text from Word (and the web) that is already hyperlinked into InDesign. How do I do it while keeping the links active?

I want to bring in text from Word (and the web) that is already hyperlinked into InDesign. How do I do it while keeping the links active?
Whenever I copy/paste from web or Word it removes the hyperlinks.  And when I try to do it by "Place"ing a Word document into my InDesign project it keeps the formatting with it, the rectangles around the text.
I have the latest version of InDesign.
    Any help is appreciated.

Copy-and-paste may not include formatting. A regular import using Place is the best way.
The rectangles around the hyperlinks are just to indicate they are links -- they do not print, but they do show up in your PDF.
You can remove them by double-clicking the hyperlink in the Hyperlinks panel and select "Invisible Rectangle" as type.
Typically, Word hyperlinks are formatted -- blue text, underline -- with a Character Style. If you want to remove or change the formatting, all you have to do is change the character style. My experience, though, is you must check all hyperlinks because for no apparent reason sometimes they appear in the document without the character style.

  • What is the best way to keep my personal files stored in iCloud separate from my work-related files?

What is the best way to keep my personal files stored in iCloud separate from my work-related files? It seems that I'm not allowed to link my iPad mini and my work iMac using two different accounts, so I'm wondering how to make my single personal account work for both, while keeping personal vs work files reasonably separated.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Is it possible for you to upgrade your account to iCloud Drive? That would mean, all Macs upgraded to Yosemite, and all mobile devices to iOS8?
See:  iCloud Drive FAQ and iCloud: About using iWork for iOS and iCloud
In iCloud Drive you could create two separate custom folders, one for work documents and one for private documents and organize your documents there.  Don't use the app specific folders (Keynote, Pages, Numbers, ...) , because you can only create one level of folders inside these folders.

  • How do I reinstall Yosemite on my retina MacBook Pro when the only disk option to choose is Recovery HD and it is locked?

I was trying to install windows 8 on boot camp but it said the disk couldn't be partitioned because some of the files couldn't be moved. So I went into disk utility and selected my HD (the second option) and clicked erase but I went super quick and I believe there was an error. Now I am trying to reinstall OS X Yosemite but when I click on "Re-install" Yosemite the only two options for where I want to install it are my recovery HD (which is 650MB total) and my Wininstall bootable windows USB. I don't know if I did something serious or how to reinstall Yosemite when I can't select or do anything with the first main Macintosh HD option in Disk Utility. Please help!

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My browser dowloads everything automatically in MyDocuments. But, for security reasons, I need to setup a different download path, to a different location, where I keep my personal files. How do I change the download path? Thanks, Dan.

My Firefox 3.6 is setup to download anything automatically in MyDocuments (which I never use).
For security reasons, I designated a different location on my hard drive, where I keep my confidential files.
How do I change this downloading path? I tried to change it by going to "Tools-Options-Save Files To", but it does not work.
    Thanks,

  • How do i reinstall yosemite on new hard drive without a disk?

I bought a used imac late 2009 as mine died and needed far to much to be repaired.  It came with yosemite installed.  I used carbon copy cloner were I had an external hard drive with a recent backup image.  I connected a usb external device and boot from my external backup.  I copied the image I had back to the new iMac internal HD.  I thought it would have been as simple as that. NOOOOOOO! that failed and now I am completely messed up.  Purchased software says my serials are no longer good. I can't do any work. Office 2011 and outlook won't even read my email. Adobe software hangs and won't allow the OnOne software I purchased work. I bought the latest version of OnOne 9 Suite and it fails to install stating to contact the vendor. (of course no one is there to help). I have several photo sessions I need to edit. I am under pressure.  I tried for hours to work around and try to resolve my issue.  I safe booted and used time machine.  It was chugging all night for 9 hours and in the end it said an error occurred and failed to restore my computer.  I have now had 1.5 hours of sleep and truly frustrated and had enough. I dug out my PC laptop and posting to this forum.  I gather at this point just say **** it and format and start over.  Documents are saved and photos are on a raid device. SO I am not concerned about my work.  I am concerned about getting the reinstalled software reinstalled because many of them when I tried to launch stated it was not compatible with Yosemite and to download a compatible version.  Of course the vendors want money to get the latest greatest.  I don't need the latest greatest because the version I had did exactly what I needed and I do not need anything more.  My email in outlook is a concern.  My livelihood, meaning how I make a living, is primarily based on email communications.  My business purchases are in email. My billing and receipts and sales are in email. The last time I had a catastrophic failure with outlook and hours and hours of trying to recover from backups, I ended up asking my clients to forward me their copies and just started over with Outlook.  iMail can't handle the 10,000 emails I deal with weekly and the deluge of email accounts I manage.   I could not find any other email client that offers what I need... Calendar, appointment collaboration, organization etc etc. All this does not change the fact I am still stuck.  I was told in a pop up this iMac is not registered on my Apple ID account.  I can't even find where my broken one is registered, remove it and add in this used one.  From what I can read, the solution is to bite the ******* bullet, again, and format and start over.  Well, with the downloads of MAC OS X I don't have a hard copy on disc to boot from and just do that.  With all the issues with Yosemite, I am not even 100% positive I want to go there and just be happy with Maverick and ignore the lies from Apple just how much better Yosemite is as it is not and just a license to print money with all the cash I need to spend to get my purchased software up to speed.  Ok, I have ranted enough.  I still believe that MAC is better than WINDOWS.  Considering to buy a WINDOWS PC had crossed my mind and when it crossed I pushed it in from of the MAC truck and lost that consideration. I am a Microsoft engineer and know all the reasons why not to buy Windows.  I need help from the community.  I can't afford to pay a Apple support guy that says just reboot and hold down this key and when it fails to help he says he will have someone call be back that is smarter than he is.  I am out the cash and never get that call.  Your suggestions, recommendations and "How To's" are very much appreciated.  Thank you for reading my query and my rant.  -Brian
    <Edited by Host>

Thank you to all that helped.  I did get the CD from Apple Care and managed to rebuild from scratch. In conclusion, there should be a better way to help recover from a complete disaster. I lost the original computer and hard drive.  I had a Clone Copy of the hard drive I regularly updated.  I used Time Machine. I thought I had all my bases covered in the event of a disaster. Even the cloned hard drive is stored is a fire safe guaranteed not to exceed room temperature even if the safe was in a fire 2700 degrees for over 25 minutes.  (Enough time to have a fire department put water on the fire) The safe cost me a lot of money. The time Machine external hard drive is a RAID striped system with 5 HDD with a failover of 3 complete HDD failures simultaneously. Because of piracy, software installs will go to extraordinary lengths from having a license copy of the software cloned from one computer to another. I get it. People steal. Software companies deserve a pay cheque just as much as I do. I did what I did because of all the money and time I spend in setting up, installing and configuring my licensed software I wanted a fast resolution to recovery.  As I learned from this experience it is simply not possible. If your HD changes, there are several disc sectors that are used for licensing that is not recovered in a carbon copy. Carbon Copy to me I thought was old school Bit Copy if you remember. Not so.  Changing a motherboard or whole computer even if it is to a same make and model has issues too. It's called an ESN. Electronic Serial Number.  This number that is specific to every motherboard made is used in licensing software. I searched the net looking for a way to PAY to have a fail safe system for recovery.  I only found systems that are available or for very high sensitive information servers and is priced way out of reach for an average consumer.  Meaning, that a complete disaster in your city will not loose billable or liable information about you.  You can rest assure that after the zombie apocalypse you will still get your cell bill, hydro bill, mortgage payment schedules  and your criminal record will remain intact. We can thank Hitler for teaching us that error when he destroyed the records of the cities he overthrew.  It leaves me with an argument about accountability.  Why is it when I buy software, I own nothing.  It is a licensed agreement to use the software but I never own it.  The developer sides with the fact they own the intellectual property and can not just sell it once and loose it.  Agreed!  It's the legal departments of the companies that want a piece of that pie too. So they remove any accountability of that licensed agreement that would hold them accountable the end user does in fact own nothing.  When the software or product breaks down, their system they use that writes information to parts of your HDD that you can not back up and to be used against you because they don't trust you, there is plenty of small print that states they can not be held liable for their decisions. No matter what happens, their fault or not, with or without prejudice, they are not accountable, whatsoever. Being that I had no choice but beg and plead the people I paid money to for permission to use their software, on ways to help myself in a disaster, get copies back, to put me in the same state I was in before the disaster happened without getting further ahead of the game, I was simply told its not my problem or responsibility.  When I asked about accountability? I am told read the fine print and when you are done, pay me to get the old copies back, to get the bootable medium you need and all along they way, let me ram a few more policies down your throat and say, your working software you had is no longer supported and you need to buy the updated version.
Can someone explain to me how I am a better person for all this.  How about at least explain why I should not cave in like most other people I know and seek out pirated copies instead of paying for them.  It's certainly not for support. I go none and what I was offered I had to pay for on top of paying for the license agreement.
My personal argument came to this head.  I asked why do companies and people want to rip off each other. Was it greed?  Was it economy? Was it the state of technology is changing so fast everyone is eventing on how to deal with this by the seat of their pants?  Here is my conclusion:  People generally are followers and not leaders.  People that are leaders, thinkers and risk takers are  generally outcasts, different and unusual people. Einstein said there is a very thin line between genius and insanity.  He never said if they crossed that line or not or what happens.  I think, the ones that do cross the line are more than we would like to consider acceptable. We coerced by their insane thinking, there leadership and their ideas.  We elect them and let them form governments. We allow them to invent things and then tell us we can't live without it. I know most of you agree and some of you will say it has been going on for a long time.  It's true. But like I said we are mostly followers. Thus it has been accepted as a way of life. Right?  Wrong! The masses are getting fed up. They are being tired of being ripped off.  Need to test this??? Just go a mall and on it's busiest night stand in the middle and shout at the top of your lungs "FREE 10" TABLETS, RIGHT OVER THERE" and point at some poor unsuspecting store.  Watch what happens   People love the word free. Because they are tired of not getting value for that they pay for.  Free Software, Free Games, Free this and that.  People download by the millions. Why, they no longer see the value of one person making money and getting value for that hard earned money. They are tired of paying for it and getting nothing. The know this intimately. Themselves are ripped off every day by government, insurance companies, banks, energy resources and yes even software companies. We have learned from the best, well at least the most insane.  Here is a thought to leave you with as I seek to ponder about this experience and how I thought I had done the right thing for myself... get my value for my dollar:  Have we been here before?  YES, many times.  The most recent one like this were the fat bubble burst was WWII.  What happened in that war was not so much about the atrocities of the murdered and killed, the real story was the living, the survivors.  The playing field was leveled.  It no longer mattered just how rich you were, how new of a car your drove or what job you had made you different from everyone else. There was one objective. Survive. Live to see another day. After the war the survivors were not liberated. We had a great depression.  Overcoming the loss of that war and the rebuilding that needed to be done when no one was willing to pay to have it done. We had to put our differences aside. Our culture, our creed, our resolve had no bearing. We were all in the same leveled playing field of life.  My pondering is leaving me one tough question... What happened to us.  How did we become so greedy and so racist with each other that we threw out accountability. Not only did we through it out, we all said ion way way or another that it was acceptable. Our problems may very well be different from each other but what has not changed we all feel we deserve respect and should hold each other accountable for our decisions. What happened to that very resolve that government bodies, religious leaders and factions, manufacturing and developing companies all feel this resolve does not apply to them.  What happened?
LOL: Funny how a 12 cent CD could have been offered in the first place with a little knowledge being shared could have misdirected what I just said to the focus of this group. Wow.
Thank you people for helping me with my issues.  I truly appreciate it. Thank you to those of you that put up with my rant. More thanks to those who read it. My sincerest apologies to those I reminded just how life *****. • How to store movie contents while keeping same music library

Pretty much what i wanna do is that to save music in my computer but keep my movie contents in external hard drive. How do i do this?
    Thanks in advance

Put the movies on the external drive.  Hold down the option key while dragging them to an iTunes window which will leave the files where you put them. Of course the movies will show as broken links iif you do not have the external turned on when starting iTunes, but the links will repair themselves if you turn on the drive and restart iTunes.
My preferred method is to make a separate library for movies and store this on the external drive.  To do that, start iTunes with the option key held down.

  • How can I reinstall 24.6 & keep Thunderbird from updating with 31

Thunderbird 31 screws up my e-mail addresses. The background in the header turns all blue & when I enter names, most appear in red ink. It does not call up the addresses from my address book using my abbreviated letters as 24.6 did & it substitutes names until I spell the whole name out.
I keep doing system restores to get 24.6 back & would like to block future Thunderbird updates so I can keep 24.6. If not, how do I fix this lousy replacement.

I performed another restore to get to my previous version of 24, then followed your directions. You are right 31 settings are different than 24, nonetheless in 24, I unchecked all references to updating & It worked for me. The big test came with all the pending updates which I performed, except Internet Explorer. The updates didn't affect TB, so I went ahead & updated Explorer and my setting held.
I'm back in business now. I would still like to know why 31 screwed things up so bad. Like Windows 8 & 8.1, I don't want it and opted for Windows 7 on my new laptop.
    Thanks for the helpful minfo.

  • How to Create new entry, while keeping CoS and nsRoles in tact...

    Hi,
    Here's the short version:
How can one create a new entry/context in DS, copy the attributes from an existing entry (using JNDI) and save them in the new entry/context WITHOUT duplicating CoS or nsRole/DN info.
    Long version of the question:
We are using DS 5.2 and Portal 6 (and messenger/calendar etc). We have our employees saved in DS. What I want to do is change a user's name/uid by copying the user's attributes (in JNDI) and create a New entry with the New uid, with all the other attributes the same. Then deleting the original entry.
This is what I have done...
    1. Get all the employee's attributes... (abriviated)(ctx is the DirContext)
    NamingEnumeration answer = ctx.search(searchBase, filter, ctls);
    SearchResult sr = (SearchResult)answer.next();
    Attributes attrs = sr.getAttributes();
    2. Create a new employee with the same attributes (assume I use a different uid in the dn)
    ctx.createSubcontext(dn, attrs);
This works...it copies all the attributes to the new entry -BUT- when you look at the LDIF file, it ADDS several more attributes to the new entry.
    Example: it adds the following...
    sunPortalNetletRules
    sunPortalGatewayEnableSSO
    sunPortalDesktopDpDocument
    sunPortalDesktopDpLastModifiedUser
    iplanet-am-user-auth-modules
    And about 20 others...
Now if I am not mistaken, these are the CoS and roles that the DS uses and propagates down to the entry. But when I copy the attributes over, (using JNDI) I get these attributes too but I want to copy only the attributes that are unique and have DS handle the roles and CoS like it does for the original entry.
Is there a way to tell the DS to just use the CoS or roles instead of duplicating all these attributes in this individual entry??? (and do it using JNDI)
(sorry this question is sooooo long.)
    Thanks!
    Eric

    Hello Viji,
I am extremely thank ful for the document.
Kindly help me with below points of possible
    1)     if it is standard table (LFBK) , even then shall we will need to do the generate program
    step in SCDO ?
    2)     does it generate Z-function module ?
    3)     do we need to call this function module at appropriate places to update the CDPOS and CDHDR
for changes in the standard table ?
    4)     I have already created custom business object for LFBK so that Iu2019ll be able to create entry
    in SWEC (fyi)
    5)     how and when are the method used in the table maintenance generator called ?
    6)     Page 14 point 3 says that "Add a new entry to link the Change Document Object ZPRPS_CD and
table ZPRPS so that changes are recorded when table entries change."
Does this mean that once we create SCDO and generate program, these two steps are  enough
for the SWED entry to create change log in CDPOS and CDHDR ?
    7)     It is understood that it is necessary that the change object in SWEC should be logged in
CDPOS and CDHDR only then the event would be created for the SWEC entry. is this correct ?
in order to create change log for the change object in CDHDR and CDPOS, is the SCDO entry
and generate program steps enough or the methods of table  maintenance generator are also
    required ?
thank you very much for your time

  • How do you reinstall archbang while preserving user accounts?

    Hello team,
I have difficulty reinstalling archbang with same user account in an already existent linux system. I choose to use same username that already exists, but the archbang installer insists I use another username.
There are likely some users like myself that reinstall different distros or same distro on same home partition with hope to have option to use the same username. Any ideas?
As a workaround, I install with a new user, then try to re-enable my preferred user account.
    Archbang rock on.

kazuya, we do not support any other OS here but ArchLinux. You will have to ask on the Archbang forums and they might be able to better help you there.

  • Re-install (fresh) Yosemite but keep emails and iTunes settings etc

OK so I upgraded to Yosemite. Prior to this my mac was getting slow as I have always just upgrade over the old OS. But things are still slow. So it's time to do a fresh install.
I know how to do this but I want to maintain my iTunes settings and my emails and accounts even apps. But I have the following questions:
    1) If i do a fresh install then use migration assistant from my Time Machine backup to bring in the old apps and settings etc. Is this still better than just upgrading as I have done ?
    2) What method allows me to keep at least keep my iTunes settings e.g. playlists and content, emails and documents etc ? I can always re-install my apps if needed.
    3) Will a fresh install have any affect on my Boot Camp install ?
My iTunes is split over 2 drives i.e. I have use TuneSpan to move my video files onto an external drive.
    Thanks
    Mark

It is exactly the same. What you can try is to restore only your user files but not apps, so you will not restore most of the rubbish you had before.
    See the answer 1.
No, it should not, always that you do not format the Boot Camp partition by mistake, so be very careful.
In this case, the best way is to copy your user files to an external drive manually, so after formatting the hard disk and reinstalling Mac OS X you do not have to restore anything from the Time Machine backup and you only have to copy back the files, but this will not keep your mails.

  • My employer is issuing an iPad 4 to me, but has informed me that I "...can expect no privacey" of any personal information that may be put on the iPad. This is not acceptable to me. How can I use iTunes to keep my personal information off the iPad?

My employer is issuing an iPad 4 to me, but has informed me that "...I can expect no privacy" with regard to any information on it. What has me concerned is that my employer has also requested that I use my Persoanl iTunes account to syc and update the iPad.  I am concerend with my personal privacey, as I have two other iPads that use this account regualary.
My question is: How can I use iTunes to update etc. the company iPad using iTunes without compromising my personal information?
What I have done is to set up a different sign in (is that called an Apple ID?) within iTunes (I now have two different names I can use to sign in to iTunes). They both still use the same iTunes and my personal apps and information appear to be available to my second sign in name (the second sign in name is what I intend to use for the company iPad). When I sync the company iPad how do/can I keep my persoanl information from being syc'd automatically to the comapany iPad?

    Hi herbie13!
It sounds like you will still want to link your iPad and computer, but you want to prevent the iPad from syncing information from your computer to your iPad. I have an article here for you that can help tell you how to set this up:
    iOS: Syncing with iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1386
You will want to follow the steps here to set up the iPad for syncing, but when it comes time to sync, you'll just want to make sure that the boxes for syncing the multitude of items that you can sync remain unchecked so that none of that information gets synced into the iPad.
Another note: your second Apple ID will not be able to access the apps, music, movies, tv shows, etc., that you have purchased under your primary Apple ID. Even though it seems that the secondary Apple ID still has access to those items, that is just because you are viewing your second Apple ID through the iTunes Store section on your computer and you have those items saved locally on your computer. You will need to repurchase and download all of the content that you wish to use again on your second Apple ID, if that is what you wish to solely use on this iPad.
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.
