How do I "segregate" bad sectors on my hard drive so OSX won't access them?

I have a bad section on one of my hard drive partitions.
Is there a way to scan the disk, identify the bad sectors, and not use those areas for data storage?
Thanks
Len

I don't think it's worth it. Hard drive technology automatically remaps bad sectors to an internal set of spare sectors. Only when that remap buffer overflows do you start to get write errors to bad sectors (read problems are a different story, as the drive diagnoses the problem and will give back corrupted data even if it's remapped).
What this means that if the drive has started showing bad sectors, it has become highly unreliable and will die imminently. I'd reccomend backing up all of the data you have, and either having applecare replace your hdd or buy a replacement online and follow the instructions on removing your hard drive (see www.ifixit.com) from your ibook, reinstall OSX etc.
If you absolutely must continue using that drive, you can try the program suggested, but in all likelyhood more bad blocks will keep occuring, forcing reinstalls of software, lost data, failure to boot properly etc.

  • How can I remove bad takes from my hard drive?

I am relatively new to Logic Express and I am a lame keyboard player so I have to do lots of punch ins to correct my sloppy keyboard playing. It sometimes take 4 or 5 takes to get one good one. Is there a shortcut key that I can use that would erase those bad files off my hard drive? There is just so many of them and they use tons of space.

You want to clean up after recording. In other words you only want to keep the tracks that are in the arrange window....Not the bad takes...to do this Click on command 9 to open the audio window...from the local menu..select edit..click on select unused files...all the unused takes will be highlighted..from the local audio file menu..click on delete files...this is a permanent operation and will delete all other takes...just make sure you don't need these for any other sessions...

  • How do I check for bad sectors on the hard drive? (Need help soon!)

I've asked this in a different thread but am not getting exactly the question answered completely. I need to run a check on my drive that will test each sector and if a bad sector is found, it will block that sector from being written to with data in the future.
I used to use Disk First Aid or Apple HD Setup or Norton Utilities to do this. Norton does not appear to be made for Mac OSX 10.4.4 and those other utilities appear to be System 9 and earlier utilities only.
Is there some way of doing this with current Apple tools? My original post is at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1592160#1592160
Thank you. I've been down since Saturday and really need to get an answer so I can move forward and get my computer back up and running.

There is only one way to do this. Make a bootable backup of your drive to an external Firewire drive (you can use the Restore option of Disk Utility.) Then do the following:
1 Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
By reformatting using the Zero Data option DU will force checking for bad blocks.
If you wish to forego the above procedure you can purchase TechTool Pro (v. 4.1.1) which has a module for scanning the disk for bad blocks. However, repairing the drive can only be done by reformatting.

  • Moving iTunes library from a hard disk with bad sectors to new hard drive

I have tried to move my itunes library using the method proposed by Apple in the support section but it does not work because of a bad hard drive.
I change the itunes folder in preferences. I let itunes organize my music. However, when I select consolidate music everything starts OK but stops when it hits the bad sectors on the old hard drive.
I can copy the rest of the music to the new hard drive manually using finder. However, the music is not recognized in the new location only the old location.
I have tried many things including moving music to another hard drive and naming it the same as the old hard drive and then trying to consolidate it. That does not work. I have tried the method of changing the library.xml file to reflect the new folder. That does not work. I am at a stand still. I have invested much time rating the music and I do not want to lose that.
    Any suggestions?

Thank Chris I have just done that. How do I now get them in to Itunes ?
If you simply copy the iTUnes folder to /Music/ and launch iTUnes, everythign will be there. No need to import anything.
This will work the same with iPhoto.
Simply copy the Photo library to /Pictures/ folder and launch iPhoto.

  • How to repair a bad block on internal hard drive?

I've just performed a surface test on my internal HD
    It reports back one bad block, at # 1, 118, 671, 700.Filename = N/A.
    1. Should I be concerned about this? I have not noticed any performance issues.
    2. If I wanted to get rid of it anyway, how do I repair that bad block?
    Please advise.
    Many thanks.
    /gh

Good to know this happens automatically.
Is that something OS X automatically does on startup, or on shut down, or in background?
But in this case, that automatic feature seems to have missed this block. Else the bad block would not show up in the utility, with a file in it.
Or ,,,,perhaps it still shows up as a bad block in the utility, even though it's been mapped out.
If that's the case, then I guess I need another kind of utility that would report the block has been mapped out....
    Any suggestions?

  • How to transfer my ITunes library from External Hard Drive to Mac Book Pro

I recently had an issue with my Mac Book(OS X Yosemite)  Had to take it to the store and they fixed it (replaced graphics mother board or something like that) Before that  I backed up the whole laptop on an external hard drive. When I connect the external hard drive I can open all my files, not sure how to transfer it, I see the External hard drive and can drag it but where do i drag it because on my Mac Book I can't  find Music. Should I drag it to the desktop and then drag it to the music when I disconnect the external ? Thanks

Choose Home from the Finder's Go menu, double-click the Music item, and drag it there.

  • How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows

How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows?

First the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) cannot share out an external HDD attached to its USB port unless it is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. It will not work if the HDD is formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT.
If the HDD is formatted properly, when you access the AEBS with the AirPort Utility, does the HDD show up properly on the Disks tab of the utility?
If it does, then you would access the HDD as any other network share, using the following format: //servername/sharename. In the case of the AirPort Disk (a HDD attached to the USB port of either an Extreme or Time Capsule), the "servername" would be the Extreme's Base Station Name, and the "sharename" would be the volumename of the HDD.

  • How do I use TC as a wireless hard drive?

    Hi
Im new to these forums and to mac in general.
I just bought a TC TG thinking that I can use it for both backing up as well as a wireless hard drive for my macbook pro
aparantly I know heard you can only use it for one or the other
    Is that true,anyone know?
If not is there anyway I can use lets say 500 gb for back up and the other 500 as extra storage space?
if thats not a possibility, how to i just use as a wireless hard drive?
I have already set up TC and backed up,which took almost 2 days
    Can anyone help?
Your help will be greatly appreciated

You can use it as both. In your Finder, it should appear as a networked drive in the left panel. Mount it and you'll be able to copy files to and from it, as well as delete them. And you'll still be able to use it as a Time Machine backup disk. You'll have to enable file sharing in your AirPort Utility under Disks first if it isn't already enabled. This is going from memory so there may be a few discrepancies. If anybody can correct this, please do.
You can't partition the drive though, so if you're going to use 500 GB for backup and 500 GB for other things, you'll have to manually monitor how much space is being used by the backup.

  • How do I transfer iphoto library to external hard drive keeping events intact?

Had a one to one session but forgot how to do this. I would like to transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive keeping the folders and events intact. I figured out how to send all my photos to the hard drive but they all transfer in single images, if that makes sense, and then i have to go thru all of the 15,000 images by hand and sort them into folders. Ahhhhhhh!
When they showed me how to do this at apple I am able to open my external hard drive and see a folder labled 'iphotolibrary" and  I am able to click it open and then all my events show up just like in iphoto library.
Also does your iphoto library "Trash" take up space on your HD? Forgve me if thats a dumb question but I am kind of a computer "dummy".
thanks so much. My hard drive has VERY little space left on it so I need to transfer ASAP.

I just posted this to another topic, but it applies here as well. Hopefully there's no prohibition on cross-posting on this board, my apologies to all if there is:
"I haven't read the whole thread, so someone could have already mentioned this, but I did the same thing, move my music library to an external drive. The Help articles are helpful, but only up to a point. When that didn't work, I called up AppleCare support up, and they took me through all the standard steps, and got stumped at the same point I did. Finally she suggested trying something, and that ended up doing the trick. So here in brief is what you do:
    1) Copy over your "iTunes Music" folder to the external hard drive
    2) Go into Advanced preferences to have iTunes look for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. If you're like me, your music won't appear in the Library.
    3) In iTunes, go to the Library window (which is probably blank), then in a Finder window, find the icon for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. Drag that icon onto the Library window.
You should now see a progress window pop up showing all the songs that it's populating the Library window with."

  • How do I delete files from a portable hard drive

I've been backing up my MacBook Pro on an external portable hard drive. I need to delete some but not all the files from that portable hard drive permanently. When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. I am required by work to delete them off this hard drive. Do I have to reformat the hard drive? If so how do I go about it?

You can easily delete files from a Time Machine Backup:
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.If the Time Machine icon isn’t in the Dock, look for Time Machine in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through the backups Time Machine created. The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to delete, select it, and then open the Action menu (looks like a gear) and choose Delete All Backups for the item.
